We'd like to involve as many households as possible, so get the whole family thinking of their original ideas now! Please display your scarecrow on your property where it can be seen from the road during the week before the show, but bring it to the church yard before 10am on show day for judging. (Scarecrows left at owners risk). The competition is open to everyone. This year the competition theme is open. Your scarecrow should be given a title and this title will be taken into consideration when the scarecrow is judged. Minimum size 24” (60cm). Please bring it to the church yard before 10am on show day for judging. Prizes will be awarded. Don't forget to hand in your entry form if you want a chance to win the prize! No entry form, no prize. If you prefer, you can just put up your scarecrow for fun. Consideration will be given to input from children. Although Cilcain Show has gradually changed and grown down the years, the spirit of the old Society remains. Traditional competitions bring together the community in joint endeavour for enjoyment and interest, while new ideas for entertainment are regularly introduced to keep the show fresh. Each year a committee of village folk supported by local residents work hard to make the show a success and always welcome additional volunteers with new ideas. (Nercwys) CLASS 17: LADIES’ CAKE COMPETITION - Carrot and Banana Cake Ingredients: 180 g soft brown sugar; 3 eggs; 180 ml sunflower oil; 180 g plain flour; pinch of salt; 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda; 2 tsp baking powder; 180 g carrots, finely grated; 120 g walnut pieces or almonds; 2 ripe bananas, mashed; 90 g seedless raisins or sultanas; 1 tsp ground cinnamon; 1 tsp mixed spice; ½ tsp ground nutmeg; Zest of one orange; 2 tsp of fresh orange juice; icing sugar Preparation: 1.Pre-heat the oven to 170 C. Line and grease a 20 cm diameter cake tin. Mix the sugar, eggs and orange juice until well combined and thickened. Sift in (together) the flour, salt, baking powder, bicarb, cinnamon, mixed. spice and nutmeg. 2. Mix them all together thoroughly and then add the oil, almonds/walnuts, bananas, carrots, sultanas and zest. Give this a thorough mix, then pour into the prepared cake tin. 3. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until it is cooked. When out of the oven, cool on a wire rack. 4. Topping (Optional): dust with icing sugar or mix a small drop of water in some sieved icing sugar until it makes a thick paste and pour in streaks over the top of the cold cake. 2014 winner : Sally Jones (Caergwrle). Watch batteries can usually be fitted while you wait, no job is too small! 12 Home Section Gentleman’s Baking Competition Class 18 Gentlemen’s Baking Competition : Mary Berry Apple cake Prize bottle of whiskey Ingredients: 225 g self-raising flour; 1 level tsp baking powder; 225 g caster sugar; 2 large eggs; 1/2 tsp almond extract; 150 g butter, melted; 250 g cooking apples, peeled and cored; 25 g flaked almonds. Instructions: Preheat the oven to 160C/fan, 140/gas. Lightly grease a deep 20 cm loose bottomed cake tin. Measure the flour, baking powder, sugar, eggs, almond extract and melted butter into a bowl. Mix well until blended, then beat for a minute. Spread half of this mixture in the prepared tin. Thickly slice the apples and lay on top of the mixture in the tin, piling mostly towards the centre. Using a desert spoon, roughly spoon the remaining mixture over the apples. Make sure that the mixture covers the centre well, as it will spread out in the oven. Sprinkle with flaked almonds.
