Welcome to New Mexico State University
We are excited that you have chosen to make NMSU the
next step in your education. As you become more
familiar with your new community, you will learn about
the great programs and services we have to offer. You
will also learn that being an Aggie is more than wearing
clothing with the name. There are a few values the name
carries with it.
CARE — Aggies look out for other Aggies. We help one
another out when needed. When one of us is struggling
with a challenge in life, other Aggies make sure to show
support and encouragement. We hold each other to the
standards set forth in the Student Code of Conduct. We
challenge one another to do their best.
RESPECT — Each of us come from a different path in life. Furthermore, as an Aggie we
honor different life stories. We hold each other in high regard. We work to create a
safe and healthy community for each of our members. We value the strength that
each Aggie brings to our community. It is the combination of these strengths that
makes NMSU an amazing place to learn and live.
DISCOVERY — College is a time to learn about one’s self. In the classroom and through
activities on campus, we come to understand who we are and what we can achieve. An
Aggie pushes them self to calculate risk and try new things. An Aggie is also willing to
accept the outcomes of these choices. It is through discovery that an Aggie comes to
understand who they truly are and what they can accomplish.
We hope you enjoy your time at NMSU. We hope through the years you transform into
the person you want to be. College is an amazing time in a person’s life. If you look
out for others and push yourself, you can have experiences you never thought about.

Welcome
History
NewMexicowasstillaterritorywhenLasCrucesCollegeopenedthedoorsofitstworoombuildinginthefallof1888.TheorganizersofLasCrucesCollege—ledbyHiram
Hadley,arespectededucatorfromIndiana—hadevenbiggerplansinmind.
In1889,theNewMexicoterritoriallegislatureauthorizedthecreationofanagricultural
collegeandexperimentstationinornearLasCruces.Theinstitution,whichwas
designatedastheland-grantcollegeforNewMexicoundertheMorrillAct,wasnamed
theNewMexicoCollegeofAgricultureandMechanicArts.
LasCrucesCollegemergedwithN.M.A.&M.A.,andthenewschoolopenedonJanuary
21,1890.Thatfirstsemestertherewere35studentsinthecollegelevelandpreparatory
classesandsixfacultymembers.Classesmetintheoldtwo-roombuildingofLasCruces
Collegeuntilsuitablebuildingscouldbeputonthe220-acrecampusthreemilessouth
ofLasCruces.
By1960,theschoolhadgrowngreatly,anditsnamewaschangedbystate
constitutionalamendmenttoNewMexicoStateUniversity.
TodayNewMexicoStateUniversitysitsona900-acrecampusandenrolls16,428
studentsfromall50statesandfrom71nations.Regularfacultymembersnumber694
andstaff,3,113.
Traditions
‘A’Mountain—Asaprank,AgricultureandMechanicalArts(Engineering)students
placedgiant‘A’sallaroundcampusindifferentlocations:inthe1920s,studentsplaced
an‘A’onthedomeoftheoldHadleyHall.Soonafter,agiant‘A’foundapermanent
homeonTortugasMountain.Studentscreatedthe‘A’outoflargestonesandeach
stonewaswhitewashed.The‘A’almostdiedoutduringthe60s,butinthe70s,the
Greekcommunitybroughtitback.Thetraditionofpaintingthe‘A’continuesasapartof
CampusServiceDayduringGreekWeek,andthe‘A’islitforthefootballseason.
AmericanIndianWeek—Startedinthe1970’s,AmericanIndianWeekhighlights
AmericanIndiancultureinearlyApril.EventsincludeAmericanIndianguestspeakers,
traditionaldancers,comedians,musicians,anIndianTacodemonstration,andthe
annualMissNativeAmericanNMSUpageant.
TheBigEvent—Alargeoff-campuscommunityserviceeventwherestudentsgointothe
LasCrucescommunityandvolunteerwithnon-profitorganizations.Thisisawaytosay
“ThankYou”tothecityofLasCrucesforthecontinuingsupportofNMSU.
BlackHistoryMonth—FebruaryisBlackHistoryMonth!Eventsusuallyincludeanart
exhibit,aspeakerandpaneldiscussions,adancecontest,gamenight,movienights,and
openmicnight.BlackHistoryMonthremindsusofthepast,presentandfuture
challengesandsuccessesofleadersofdiversity,inclusion,andequity.

CrimsonFridays—OnFridaysbeforeasportingevent,NMSUstudentsandstaffwear
crimsoninsupportoftheAggies.Thistraditioncontinuesevenwhenthereareno
eventscomingupthatweekend.
CommonRead—Eachyear,allnewfreshmenareinvitedtoreadabookchosenbythe
facultyandstaffthatwillbeusedthroughouttheyearbothinsideandoutsidethe
classroom.Thiscommonreadallowsstudents,faculty,andstafftohaveashared
experienceforexchangingideassothatconversations,discussions,anddebatescan
expandlearningbeyondtheclassroom.
FirstYearWalk—Currentstudents,staff,andfacultymemberslinetheInternational
MallastheincomingclassofAggieswalksfromthePanAmericanCenter,downcampus,
andthroughtheMillerFieldGates,symbolizingtheirentranceintotheAggiefamily.
GLBTQWeek—GLBTQWeekisaweek-longcelebrationthatincludestheFestivalof
Colors,adancecelebration,DragShow,movies,andatalentcompetition.
GreekWeek—Inthe1970s,GreekWeekconsistedofGreekgames,Greeksinging,and
othersocialevents.Now,GreekWeekhasgrownintotheDayofCaring,CampusService
Day,CollegeBowl,andmore.
HalloweenHowl—Faculty,staff,andstudentscanenjoyanightoffunandgamesas
wellassafealternativewayoftrick-or-treating.HalloweenHowlissponsoredby
CampusActivitiesandvariousstudentorganizations.
HomecomingWeek—HomecomingoccurseveryyearinOctober.Throughouttheweek,
eventsareheldforstudentsandalumnitoattend.TheweeksendswiththeNMSU
communitygatheringforthehomefootballgameandthenamingofthekingand
queen.
KeepStateGreat—Anon-campuscommunityserviceeventthattakesplacebefore
Homecomingeachfall.Studentsworkonbeautifyingthecampusforalumnicomingto
NMSU.
KRUXFest—KRUX91.5,NMSU’sstudentradiostation,setsupanoutdoormusicfestival
forstudentseveryspringsemester.Studentscanexpectlocaltalentandmusiciansfrom
aroundthecountry.MusicrangesfromrocktofolktoDJmixandbeyond.
LatinoWeek—InthefirsttwoweeksofMarch,LatinoWeekhighlightstheLatino
culture.Formerlyreferredtoas“ChicanoWeek”,then“FiestasLatinas”,theseevents
havebeenacampustraditionforatleast40years.Eventsincludeguestspeakers,
movies,andentertainment.
NochédeLuminarias—OnthefirstSundayeveninginDecembermembersoftheNMSU
communityareinvitedtostrollaroundCorbettCenterStudentUnionandalongthe
InternationalMallbytheglowof6,000luminarias.Otheractivitiesduringthisevent
includehorse-drawntrolleyrides,caroling,andlightrefreshments.
LateNightBreakfast—DuringFinalsWeek,NMSUfacultyandstaffservestudentsalate
nightbreakfastattheTaosRestaurantinCorbettCenterStudentUnion.
