ELLIS HIGH SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS FOR
CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Philosophy of Activities and Athletics
The Ellis High School co-curricular and activities program exists to provide opportunities to expand and
enhance the academic curriculum of the school. The Ellis High extracurricular activities program will
contribute to the education of Ellis students by encouraging the growth of good citizenship, enhancing
the concept of good sportsmanship and providing a laboratory setting for cooperative learning.
Although the program will enhance school pride the programs purpose and reason for existing will be
for the benefit of students who qualify and choose to participate in the program. This statement of
philosophy is based on the following beliefs:
Belief #1 - Activities support the Academic Mission of Schools. They are not a diversion but rather
an extension of a good educational program. Students who participate in activities programs tend
to have higher grade point averages, better attendance records, lower dropout rates and fewer
discipline problems than students generally.
Belief #2 - Activities are inherently educational. Activities programs provide valuable lessons on
many practical situation teamwork, sportsmanship, winning and losing, hard work. Through
participation in activities programs, students learn self-discipline, build self-confidence, and
develop skills to handle competitive situations.
Belief # 3 - Activities Foster Success in Later Life. Participation in high school activities is often a
predictor of later success - in college, a career and becoming a contributing member of society.
ELLIS RAILROADERS . . . PROMOTING SPORTSMANSHIP AND CITIZENSHIP!
Our students and spectators are encouraged to be a positive part of our co-curricular program. The
following are expectations (standards) of the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA)
concerning sportsmanship that must surround any interscholastic contest or event.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Accept the responsibility and privilege of representing your school and your community
Show respect for the opponent and officials at all times
Accept both victory and defeat with pride and compassion, never being boastful or bitter
Know, understand and appreciate the rules of the contests
Maintain self control at all times
Recognize and appreciate skill in performances, regardless of affiliation
School administration will strictly adhere to the policies of the KSHSAA and reinforce as necessary. It is
important for all participants and spectators to remember that violations of the above mentioned
beliefs and standards could result in the loss of opportunity to continue being a part of the program or
attend interscholastic events.
2
Co-curricular Activities:
Students are encouraged to participate in activities; however, along with such participation goes an
obligation to make and keep commitments to coaches, sponsors, organizations, and fellow students.
Students are urged to limit their membership based on their ability to make and keep such required
commitments. Committing oneself to an organization means, not only accepting the privileges of the
organization, but also accepting the responsibilities that go along with being a member of the
organization.
Absence on Day of Activity
A student shall not be eligible for practice or competition if absent after 12:30 from school because of
illness on the day of practice or competition. Also, any unexcused absence or suspension on the day of
practice or competition will result in ineligibility for that day.
Bus Policy:
During school sponsored activity trips, all students who ride to an event must return on the bus unless
the parent requests, in person, to the head coach or sponsor that they will be taking their son or
daughter home with them. (Special circumstances and arrangements can only be made in advance by
the Principal to vary from this policy.)
Transportation Rules:
1. Students shall follow the directions of the driver the first time given.
2. Students shall arrive at the bus stop 3 to 5 minutes before the bus arrives.
3. Students shall be courteous, use no profane language or obscene gestures.
4. Students shall cross the roadway in front of the bus only after the bus has come to a complete
stop and upon the direction of the driver.
5. Students shall go directly to their assigned seat upon entering the bus.
6. Students shall remain seated and facing forward to keep the aisles and exits clear.
7. Students shall observe school policies for dress code and behavior and will respect the rights
and safety of others.
8. Students shall not throw or pass objects on, from or into the bus.
9. Students shall carry only objects that can be held on their lap—up to the discretion of the bus
driver.
10. Students shall not carry or use any tobacco products, alcohol, drugs, or any other
controlled substance on the bus.
11. Students may lose the privilege to eat, drink, or chew gum on the bus.
12. Students shall not carry hazardous materials, nuisance items, or animals on the bus.
13. Students shall not leave or board the bus at locations other than the assigned stops at home or
school.
14. Students shall not extend head, arms, or objects out of the bus windows.
3
Consequences for policy violations:
First Referral – Parents contacted
Second Referral – Three (3) day bus suspension
Third Referral – Bus suspension of two weeks to the remainder of the semester
*A short or long term suspension may be issued immediately, depending upon the severity of the
infraction. Sequence for write-ups does not “start over” at the start of the second semester.
Wednesday Night Activities:
No school activities, at school or away, may be scheduled after 6:00 p.m. on Wednesdays. Any deviation
from this established procedure must be cleared by the Principal.
Physicals:
All students participating in athletics or cheerleading must have a physical examination on file before
they will be allowed to practice or participate. This examination may be obtained from any physician of
your choice licensed in the state of Kansas. This physical also requires current Tetanus Diphtheria (Td)
vaccination. The forms are generally available at the doctor offices, schools and district offices. Both
the physician and parents must sign these forms.
National Competitions:
It is the Board of Education's policy to support regular season, League, Regional, Sub-State, and State
Competitions throughout EHS’ activities. The school will not enter any National Competitions.
Wall of Fame Policy:
1. Only KSHSAA State Champions will be honored.
2. Pictures will not be put up until the end of their senior year (with all state titles summarized).
3. The school will pay for two 8"X10" color pictures, one for the high school lobby and one for
the superintendent's office. (School will not pay for sitting fees if student elects to go to
professional photographer.)
Communication between Coaches, Student-Athletes, and Parents:
Communication is a cornerstone to relationships. This is especially true in the coach-athlete
relationship. Within this relationship difficult issues must be dealt with at times, including discipline,
player performance, and player dissatisfaction. Proper communication results in the positive resolution
of such issues, stronger coach-player relations and other benefits such as the student learning how to
solve problems.
Parents also have a relationship with their child’s coach, and communication is equally important to this
relationship. Parents may feel the need to step in on their child’s behalf. Whatever the motive, proper
communication will enhance coach-parent and coach-player relations.
The following is a guide for coaches, parents and student-athletes. This guide provides a chain of
communication that will maintain and build positive relationships.
Step One: Coach-Athlete Session
If a player or his/her parent has any issue or problem with the sport experience, the studentathlete is expected to address the coach. Students are also encouraged to talk with a coach
about any issue in their personal or academic life. The district’s expectations of coaches include
open communication and positive relations.
4
Step Two: Coach-Parent-Athlete Session
If an issue has not been resolved in step one, the next step in the communication process is a
meeting with parents. The guideline here is to set an appointment at the coach’s discretion. If
the issue is emotional, the appointment should be scheduled at a later time so parties are calm
and problem solving can occur. Also, the parent or player should define the purpose of the
session when the appointment is set.
In this step, there may be rare cases when it may be best if the athlete does not participate in
the session. If either the parent or coach feels this is the case, this decision should be discussed
when setting the appointment and purpose of the meeting.
Step Three: Administrator-Coach-Parent-Athlete Session
If an issue is not resolved in Step Two, the next step may be initiated by any party. Using the
same process as above, an appointment is set and all parties define the purpose of the meeting.
Mood-altering chemicals policy (alcohol, tobacco, & drugs)
Philosophy and Purpose- Extracurricular activities and sports are a privilege for each participating
individual. Therefore, it is important that students and parents be aware of the necessary rules
and regulations which assure continued eligibility and participation as responsible
representatives of the school. It is the primary responsibility of the coach/sponsor to
consistently enforce this code.
USD #388 recognizes the use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs as a significant health problem for
many adolescents, resulting in negative effects on behavior, learning, and the total development
of each individual. The misuse of alcohol, tobacco, and/or drugs by adolescents affects
extracurricular participation and development of related skills and future health. It is also
against the law.
Each coach has the prerogative to establish additional rules pertaining to the activity supervised.
These rules may include attendance at practice, detentions, curfew, dress and general conduct
by participants during practices, contests and trips, and will be handled by the coach/sponsor.
These rules and consequences will be clearly communicated to the student athlete/participant
at the beginning of the activity season.
Rule- During the school year, regardless of the quantity, a student shall not
1) handle an open container or use a beverage containing alcoholic liquor, wine, or beer,
etc.
2) handle or use any form of tobacco;
3) handle or use any controlled substance defined by law as a drug.
Interpretations:
1) The rule applies to the entire school year and any portion of an activity season which
occurs prior to the start of the school year or after the close of the school year.
2) It is not a violation for a student to be in possession of a controlled substance
specifically prescribed for the student's own use by her/his doctor.
Penalties and Recommendations- If any student chooses to violate the above rule and the violation is
substantiated (sight is sufficient evidence) by a law enforcement official, faculty member,
school administrator, or voluntary student admission the following will occur:
5
First Violation: 7 day suspension from all extracurricular school sponsored activities and sports,
excluding practices. Students will be provided access to professional counseling services if
desired.
Second Violation: 4 weeks suspension from all extracurricular school sponsored activities and sports,
excluding practices. It will also be recommended that the student receive an evaluation and any
necessary counseling from a professional chemical dependency counselor.
Third Violation: The student will be ineligible to participate in any school sponsored extracurricular
activity or sport for the remainder of the school year, including practices. The student will be
recommended to enroll in and maintain good-standing participation in a chemical dependency
treatment program.
Clarifications:
1) Suspension does not apply to class activities where a grade is given for required attendance.
Ex. Music concerts, pep band, marching band, mandatory field trips, etc.
2) Suspension does apply to all school dances, elected or honored positions, KSHSAA sports &
activities, FFA, FCCLA, plays, Railairres, etc.
3) Penalties for violations of this USD #388 high school policy shall be accumulative throughout
the entire school year.
4) It is very important to realize that anyone seen handling open containers involving this type
of activity is just as guilty as those actually consuming its contents.
6
ATTIRE
The KSHSAA Executive Board has authorized guidelines regarding attire for interscholastic
golf. All golf attire must be school approved.
APPROPRIATE ATTIRE IS EXPECTED!
Appropriate Attire:
• Pants or walking shorts
• Shorts must be worn at the waist with a minimum 5 inch inseam.
• Collared shirt or turtle neck top with sleeves. Shirt will be tucked in.
• School colors and identification is desirable but not required.
• Players are to be neat in their attire
Inappropriate Attire:
• Jeans, Jean shorts
• Ragged or cut-off shorts
• Tank Tops
• Tops that do not cover the waist
• Torn shirts
• Clothing, headwear or other apparel with inappropriate pictures or verbiage
Jewelry/Logos/Headwear
• There is no restriction on jewelry worn by competitors.
• There is no restriction on a single partial/whole manufacturer’s logo/trademark
(i.e., Nike symbol, etc.)
• When caps or visors are worn, the bill must be worn forward.
• Bandanas and do-rags are not permitted.
Appropriate attire must be worn in the playing area at all times (including the award
presentation). Removal of any part of the uniform is unacceptable behavior.
• Tournament managers will not permit students to compete if not appropriately attired.
• Member schools/coaches have a responsibility to enforce appropriate attire.
• Member schools/coaches that have a concern regarding another school’s attire should
contact the KSHSAA.
ALL SCHOOLS MUST FOLLOW THE UNIFORM RULE DURING REGULAR SEASON AND POSTSEASON MEETS.
PRACTICE ATTIRE
Jeans and Jean shorts are acceptable during practice, but must be clean and without holes or
tears. A collared shirt is not required, but shirts should be appropriate for wear in school and
must be worn on the course at all times. Golf shoes are not required, but are desirable. If the
player does not have golf shoes, then flat soled tennis shoes can be worn. Shoes with heels or
treads are not acceptable.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING
GOLF PARTICIPATION
DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR
1. During the school golf season, a student who is a member of a school golf team MAY NOT
PARTICIPATE as a member of an outside golf team or as an independent competitor in the same
sport.
2. During the school year, but not during the golf season, a student MAY PARTICIPATE in golf
competitions. See Awards Rule below.
SUMMER GOLF
1. It is not a violation of KSHSAA regulations for students to participate in any type of golf
tournament during the summer.
NOTE: Students may not accept Cash or Merchandise and may not violate the Amateur Award
(see Rule 21, page 33 of KSHSAA Handbook).
2. Students who take part in a Calcutta Tournament must not permit themselves to
be purchased. This would be a violation of the Amateur Rule.
3. If a student participates in a team scramble, no one on the team may accept cash or
merchandise.
AWARDS RULE
Medals, trophies and t-shirts are acceptable prizes and not considered merchandise.
Receiving a sleeve of balls, etc. as part of the entry fee is not a violation of the awards
rule.
8
COACHING DURING PLAY
The KSHSAA Executive Board has voted to allow golf coaches to coach (offer advice) to their athletes
during all competitions (regular season and post-season), beginning with the 2007-08 school year.
The following guidelines will be used:
1. USGA definition of “Advice” must be followed.
“Advice” is any counsel or suggestion that could influence a player in determining his play, the choice of
club or the method of making a stroke.
Information on the Rules or on matters of public information, such as the position of hazards or the
flagstick on the putting green, is not advice.
2. Coaches may not make rulings on matters of play that are the responsibility of the meet director,
tournament committee, or rules officials.
3. One (1) Head Coach will be allowed to coach/give advice during a stipulated round.
A school “squad” coach is considered a head coach for that squad (var., jr. var., etc.). During a golfers
stipulated round, they may not receive coaching or advice from anyone other than their head coach.
4. A Coaches Identification (ID) Badge must be worn and visible to the event/tournament manager.
Schools hosting regular season competitions are responsible to provide Coach ID Badges. The KSHSAA
will provide Coach ID Badges for all Regional and State Tournaments.
5. All Head Coaches must attend the coaches meeting prior to the start of a golf event/tournament to
receive their ID Badge and be identified by the tournament manager.
6. Coaching (Advice) may be given from green to tee and at the clubhouse turn.
A head coach may not coach/give advice to their player(s) until all of the golfers in a group have holedout on a green. All coaching for all golfers in a group will cease when the first golfer in the group steps
on the teeing ground of the next hole. In addition, only head coaches may coach/give advice to their
golfers at the clubhouse turn.
7. Players must proceed immediately to the next hole without delay.
A player in violation of USGA Rule 6-7, “Undue Delay” will be assessed a two-stroke penalty for the first
offense and disqualified from competition for the second offense.
8. While on the course during competition, coaches may not use electronic communication devices or
motorized golf carts.
9
SPECTATOR GUIDELINES
While you are watching, the KSHSAA asks that you observe the following guidelines. These guidelines
are being provided to ensure consistency in all post-season KSHSAA golf tournaments.
1.
Spectators are required to follow golf etiquette at all times. When the player you are
watching finished a hole, remember that the other players in the group may be finishing.
2. Spectators are asked to stay at least 30 yards behind the group they are watching. However,
they need to be aware of the group behind them and not slow them down.
3. Spectators are asked to NOT pick up any golf balls on the course during the tournament.
These players are not professionals and the owner of the ball may be several fairways away.
4. Spectators may not offer any advice to any of the players. This includes not offering their
suggestions on the club selection, direction of wind, or possible rulings on a situation. If you are
30 yards behind them, this should not be a problem.
5. Spectators may help hunt for a lost ball, but may not be in front of the group to watch where
their ball lands. (This is called being a fore caddie).
6. Spectators shall in no instances move a players bag or ball or offer or provide a ride in a cart
during the round of golf. (The player shall be disqualified).
7. Spectators shall not be involved in the scoring or the recording of scores for the group. The
spectators may keep score but cannot correct or dispute the scores of any of the players in the
group.
8. Spectators may give encouraging remarks such as “Nice shot” or “Great drive” or “Good putt”.
Please keep all comments positive and at the appropriate times and for all players in the group.
9. Spectators are asked to turn cell phones off when in the vicinity of golfers. Golfers in
possession of a cell phone during play will be disqualified.
10. The Tournament Manager has the right to forbid spectators entirely if deemed necessary.
They also have the right to ask any spectator to leave the course.
If spectators are not able to abide by these guidelines, they will be asked
to leave.
Thank you for your cooperation!
10
PRACTICE / TOURNAMENTS
Practice will take place each day as listed on the calendar and will start immediately after
school beginning with a short meeting in my classroom (Room 119).
You are expected to be at practice each day that it is listed on the calendar and prepared to
learn and work as a team member.
Any unexcused absence will result in loss of tournament privileges for the following
tournament. After 3 unexcused absences you will be dismissed from the team.
You are expected to have your own golf equipment for practice and for tournaments. This may
include clubs, balls, tees, shoes, etc. Team tournament shirts will be purchased individually.
Bags will be loaned to the top 6 golfers on the team based on qualifying round, and team
expectations, and will be returned following the final tournament of the season in good
condition.
You are expected to act in a mature manner at all times both at practice and at tournaments.
Your actions are representative of Ellis High School and the Ellis community. Any unapproved
action will be dealt with on an individual basis by the head coach with the possible result of
dismissal from the team.
Cheating will not be tolerated and anyone caught cheating either in practice or in a tournament
will result in loss of tournament privileges for the following tournament. If the cheating
continues you may be dismissed from the team.
We practice to become better at the game of golf. I expect each of you to work together as a
team and to help your teammates as needed. Be accepting of constructive criticism and use
that information to improve your game.
The course is not ours from 3:30 – 6:00 each day. Be courteous to others playing. If you
encounter any problems on the course, do not handle it yourself. See me and I will take care of
it.
Use of carts is prohibited during scheduled practice times and are preferred not to be used at
all.
Qualifying
Each player will qualify for a spot on the varsity squad. Qualifying rounds must be played with
the coach, and the top 6 players 9 hole score during a qualifying round will comprise the varsity
squad. Ties will be broken at the coach’s discretion. The junior varsity team will be determined
in the same manner. Players may challenge for a spot on varsity following the first varsity
tournament. A challenge will consist of a 3 4-hole qualifying rounds (time permitting) with the
spot going to the player with the best 3 round average. Varsity players who medal in the top 10
at a tournament will be exempt from a challenge for the following tournament.
Work hard and have fun!
11

provided scorebook.
Awards will be given daily for the following:
