STEP RIGHT UP!
Saturday, April 27th, 2013
6:30 to 10:30 p.m.
Wallace Hall
at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola
Park Avenue at 84th Street
From the Principal!
Dear HCHS Parents,
The Greatest Show On Earth indeed!
That’s how I feel walking the hallways of our school every day. Of course,
the core of the Hunter Circus is the teaching, which I have the privilege
of watching in action every day. The energy and passion that our incredible faculty puts into their classes, flying through the curriculum with
the greatest of ease, are contagious and spill out into the hallways.
However, our faculty can only walk the tightrope of staying current in
their fields through your remarkable generosity, which helps by providing
professional development and the most up-to-date technology and curricular materials. In addition, your donations help to provide a wide range
of necessary support systems (curricular and otherwise), which helps our
student to tame the lion of life at the Brick Prison.
Without your help, our extracurricular life, and the fabric of the school,
would be a shadow of its current self. In sports, our students compete as
if shot out of a cannon, and in music, theater, debate, newspapers and
other publications, science research, quiz bowl, and on and on, our students can fully dedicate themselves to a pursuit or just clown around by
trying out new things. As always, it’s not just your financial support – it’s
your time, your caring, and your willingness to contribute yourselves to
the school and be true partners that allow our students to walk on stilts
and reach new heights in everything that they do. On behalf of the
faculty and the administration, allow me to bring down the house with
cheers of our gratitude.
All the best,
Dr. Tony Fisher
From the Pta presidents!
Good Evening, and Step Right Up!!
Welcome one and all to the center ring of the best party of the year,
Step Right Up! the HCHS Gala Spring Auction. We hope you’ll join
us, as well as your fellow Hunter parents, in the Big Top in an exciting
night of fundraising, socializing, great food and drink, and great things
to buy. And the best part of all this banner entertainment? Why of
course, it’s all the money we’ll raise together to support Hunter College
High School. Without tonight’s jackpot, many of the programs and initiatives that we have all come to think of as “part of the Hunter experience” simply would not exist.
So drink up, socialize, and open your wallets for the best cause in the
world, our kids’ school! We look forward to sharing this great evening
with you all!

DESCRIPTION OF AUCTION EVENTS
The Live Auction
Exciting packages auctioned by a professional auctioneer.
The Silent Auction
Items, or their pictures/descriptions, are placed on tables around the room with accompanying bid sheets and bidding increments. Bidding on various sections of the
Silent Auction closes incrementally.
Paddle Raise
Each year, a much-needed capital project to benefit the school is chosen. This year,
the project is the “Mathematics and Foreign Language Technology Upgrade!” The
Math Department seeks to provide every student in grades 9 – 12 with a TI-Nspire
CAS graphing calculator, a powerful educational tool to allow students to experience
a wide variety of mathematical concepts dynamically. Also, the Foreign Languages
Lab is in need of an upgrade to increase its speed and power and to open up more
advanced technologies, such as digital recording. On Auction Night, parents may
pledge a contribution in support of this project by raising their paddle. Contributions can be made at various levels.
Big Top Raffle
$5 chances to win your choice of two great prizes: an iPad Mini 32GB or Dr. Dre
headphones. Enter to win your prize – or, hedge your bets and enter to win both.
You MUST be present for the drawing at the end of the evening to win.
50/50 Raffle
50/50 Raffle tickets are $50 each. The more you buy, the bigger the pot gets! The
winning ticket, drawn at the end of the evening on April 27, wins 50% of all proceeds
taken in from 50/50 Raffle ticket sales. You need not be present to win!
Live Auction Raffle
Only 100 tickets will be sold, at $100 each, with the winner choosing any Live Auction
Package listed in the catalog as their prize. The winner is chosen and selects their prize
the day before the auction. You do NOT have to be present at the Auction to win.
High-Flying Hoops for Hunter
Here’s your chance to help support basic educational needs at Hunter, including new
music textbooks, lifeguard training books & CPR materials for Health & PE, new
texts for two new English and Communications & Theatre electives, and 100 copies
of Behind the Beautiful Forevers for Social Studies. Purchase a $25, $50 or $100 letter
“H” by entering your paddle number and help raise funds to support these basic
needs for our high-flying students and faculty.
Online Auction
The fabulous online auction is open Wednesday, April 10 through Wednesday, April
24. Get amazing deals on great items! Go to http://www.biddingforgood.com/hunterpta to see what’s for sale and to place your bids. Refer friends and family – a great
way for them to help support the school!
How to Bid and Buy
The SILENT AUCTION will begin at 6:30 p.m. and close incrementally between 7:45
and 8:45 p.m. Silent auction items will be described and displayed around the room.
Each item or package will have a unique number, and a bid sheet that will indicate
the starting bid and the increments by which bids can increase. Bidders can also pay
the “Buy it Now” price to instantly win the item and end the bidding. Beginning at
7:45 p.m., the silent auction will be closed in sections. As each section closes, the
bid sheets will be collected and the bidder with the highest legible bid will be entered
as the winner of that package/item.
The LIVE AUCTION will begin at approximately 8:45 p.m. Items will be auctioned
in the order listed in the catalog; additional items may also be listed on an addendum distributed the night of the auction. The highest bidder, as determined by the
auctioneer, shall be declared the purchaser.
Many packages in the live and silent auctions are ideal for CONSORTIUM BIDS, in
which a group of parents teams up to bid on an item. Discuss with your group the
maximum amount each of you is willing to pay, and then designate one person to
bid on the group’s behalf.

Package 6 | Documentary Filmmaker’s Talk
Lynn Novick, former HCHS parent, award-winning documentary filmmaker
and longtime collaborator of Ken Burns, has been making films about American
history for PBS for more than 20 years. She co-directed Prohibition, The War, The
Tenth Inning, and Frank Lloyd Wright, and produced Baseball and Jazz. Novick will
come to your home and give you and up to 12 guests a sneak peak of her current
work in progress, an upcoming 14-hour series on the history and meaning of the
Vietnam War, slated for broadcast in 2016. The story is told through the eyewitness accounts of “ordinary” people who lived through it. This event is a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes with the filmmaker, who will share a clip reel of
raw footage from the project - highlights from some of the 80-plus interviews that
she and Ken Burns have filmed with combatants and civilians on both sides of the
conflict. She will discuss the challenge of creating a film that does justice to such a
complicated and divisive subject.

camp experience. Every class is team taught by at least two teachers; every day begins and
ends with an innovative SAT game; every student meets one on one with their instructors
multiple times per week; and every Friday night ends with a campfire under the stars.
Last summer, our average score improvement was over 350 points, in only three weeks.
