to Higher Education!
Access Courses (pre Higher Education)
Access courses are specifically designed to
prepare you for progression to Higher
Education. They focus on developing the
transferable skills required for HI:ED, and
provide a vocational foundation to build on.
Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals at
Walsall College
Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals (HNs) are
nationally recognised qualifications that
provide a programme of specialist
vocational learning at levels 4 (HNC) and 5
(HND) which reflects the requirement of
professional organisations and meets the
National Occupational Standards for each
sector or industry.
10
With their strong emphasis on developing
practical skills alongside specialist
knowledge and understanding for the
sector, BTEC Higher Nationals are
recognised internationally by employers as
providing students with the key concepts
and practical skills for direct progression to or within - employment.
Both HNCs and HNDs can lead to increased
career prospects or can be topped up to
degree level at the College or university.
BTEC HNCs at Level 4
These offer an internationally recognised
qualification with the potential for career
progression and professional development
both for those already in employment, and
opportunities to progress into Higher
Education.
Students who achieve their BTEC Level 4
Higher National Certificate can progress first
to a BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma
which offers a greater degree of
specialisation and then potentially to
degree level.
BTEC HNDs at Level 5
These offer greater depth and specialisation
than the Level 4 HNCs, providing a robust
platform for progression into - or within employment, or to further study at degree
level.
Students achieving a BTEC Level 5 HND can
progress to employment in their sector, or
continue their studies to degree level. A
Level 5 HND provides opportunities to
specialise within a sector, and students can
choose to use this as a starting point to
work towards professional membership or

Recognising Prior Learning (RPL)
When a learner progresses from a level 4
HNC to study a level 5 HND, the credits
already achieved at level 4 can contribute
towards the level 5 HND grade.
Introducing our new Level 6 Top Up
Degrees
This is to ensure that existing learning and
expertise is recognised when moving on to
higher level study. Most of the level 5 HNDs
at Walsall College are offered as ‘top-up’
qualifications, enabling students to take up
clear progression opportunities to study at a
higher level.
Get your degree right here at Walsall
College. We’re delighted to offer one-year
top-up degrees in certain programmes,
designed to convert an existing qualification
at Level 5 into a full BA honours
qualification at Level 6. It’s aimed at
successful HND/FdA (or equivalent)
graduates who want to gain an affordable,

CASE STUDY
Jane Edgar-Lane
Course: Level 5 Diploma in
Leadership for Health & Social Care
and Children and Young People’s
Services (City & Guilds)
My course was really thought provoking
and gave me the chance to think from a
different perspective. All of the tutors were
professional, knowledgeable and always
available to offer support, guidance and
positive criticism towards my work.
The greatest challenge I faced was Year 3
because the demands were greater and I
had increased my personal expectations
and goals. But through a lot of reading and
research, I committed myself to achieve the
final year to the best of my ability.
I am currently a behaviour mentor in a
primary school and more recently I have
delivered a nurture group. My long term
goals are to continue the nurture classes,
including building relationships with
parents, possibly within a secondary school.
Thanks to my course I am now able to
challenge myself and statements that are
made and I particularly enjoyed
assignments regarding the ability to reflect,
a skill I still use daily.
In addition to the self-satisfaction of
achieving an academic qualification, I
learned and matured from meeting new
people and being given the opportunity to
listen and respect others opinions.

Neelam Pallen
Course: Teacher Training
I used to be employed as the Operations
Manager of a registered charity and
voluntary sector organisation but the duties
and responsibilities were vast and
unfortunately my employers were not
forthcoming with my training and personal
development.
I found out about Walsall College from
reading some information in our local
paper highlighting the achievements of the
College, and how it was Ofsted
Outstanding, so I came to the next Open
Day to see what was on offer.
I really enjoyed the teacher training course
and felt the group work and tasks gave me
opportunities to learn from my peers. The
assignments assisted in my learning and
development and I thoroughly enjoyed the
Micro teach, which was an achievement for
me as I have never delivered any teaching
before and was really nervous!
When the opportunity came up for
employment at Walsall College within the
Health and Social Care team as a
Professional Practice Officer, I jumped at
the chance and my course played a big part
in me being offered the job. I would advise
others to study here and enhance their
skills and knowledge.
