He wasn’t born in Texas, but
Jeremy Fee says he got here as
fast as he could. Originally from
Louisiana, Fee is in his seventh
year of teaching in the English
department at Keller High
School.
“I’m really honored to be
picked as one of the best teachers
in Keller because I know that our
school is one of the best in the
state and it’s nice to be recog-
nized as one of the best of the
best,” he said. “I really am
amazed at how wonderful the students are and how hard they
work.”
Fee said he became a teacher
because he had “amazing” teachers himself and realized the impact they could have.
“I saw that teachers can have a
really positive effect on students’
daily lives, so I really wanted to
be there to make sure the students
have some place in their daily
lives where they can smile and
have a good time while they’re
learning,” he said.
In addition to his three debate
and one creative writing classes
at Keller High School, Fee teaches English classes in the evening
at Tarrant County College.

Pat McGrail first began public service in
Keller in the early ‘90s after moving here
in 1989. He began on the Zoning Board of
Adjustment before running for the City
Council in 1995.
He served five council terms, a total of
eight years, before running against incumbent Mayor Julie Tandy in 2003. He lost
that race but won his next mayoral bid in
2007, and he was elected to a second term
in May.
From his office in Town Hall, he’s able
to be a “full-time” mayor, though it’s not a
paid position. He retired from his 38-year
career with American Airlines.
Work in the airline industry kept
McGrail on the move before settling down
with his wife, Geri, in Keller. Travel allowed him to see how several communities are run before he decided to get involved in local politics, he said.
“At the time we came here, there was
only 6,400,” he said, recalling the population sign that used to welcome folks heading into Keller on F.M. 1709 from D/FW
Airport.
Today, Keller’s rank as No. 7 on Money
magazine’s list of best small towns in
which to live is something McGrail credits
earlier leaders with. They laid the ground
work that allowed the city to thrive, he
said.
After his failed bid for the mayor’s seat
in 2003, McGrail took a break from politics, only to feel called to return a few years
later. Debate over a proposal to relocate the
Keller Public Library created a rift in
town, he said, and “I didn’t want to see that

McGrail said recent efforts like his weekly
e-mail updates, the city’s mailed newsletter and online video of city meetings have

With other fence-mending efforts from
a new team of leaders at Town Hall,
McGrail said he is proud of the direction
Keller is headed.
“I’ve always felt strongly about being
involved in the community,” he said, adding that his wife’s support and the public’s
involvement helped feed that passion over
the years.
“It really does become a part of you,” he
said. “I love this town. I really love this
town.”

Coach has felt lifelong calling to mentor kids

Staff Writer
Even though high school football isn’t
played on Sunday, Keller High School’s head
football coach, Kevin Atkinson, feels like a
minister.
Atkinson is in his eighth season as the Indians skipper but has been coaching 18 years.
He said he knew from an early age he wanted
to be a high school coach.
“I feel like its kind of a calling,” he said of
why he became a coach. “Even when I was in
high school, I liked helping kids. It’s almost a
like a ministry about life and how to become a
man, to me.”

Atkinson was born and raised in Granbury
and played both offense and defense in high
school before attending Northwest Missouri
to play defensive back. He transferred to Stephen F. Austin University and finished playing as a receiver there.
He said being named best coach isn’t something he was expecting.
“I’m very honored,” he said. “I didn’t know
anything about it, but I’m very humbled and
honored that someone would consider me the
best coach.”
In addition to being coach, Atkinson is the
school’s athletic coordinator.
When away from football, Atkinson said he
likes to spend time with his family. He lives in
Keller with his wife of 17 years, Chrissy, and
their three children, Lexi, 12, Colton, 11, and
Abby, 7.

The weekend after each Memorial Day,
the Greater Keller Chamber of Commerce’s
KellerFest brings an event to remember.
Seen as one of the biggest attractions in
the city, KellerFest draws upwards of
20,000 people from surrounding areas,
Chamber president Susanne Johnson said.
From a battle of the bands competition to
a carnival to a ceremony for military veterans, the weekend festival boasts numerous
activities. It also gives local businesses an
opportunity to network and showcase their
goods and services, Johnson said.

The event is the annual fundraiser to support the Chamber’s operations.
KellerFest is held in Keller Town Center
and typically runs the Friday afternoon
through Sunday the weekend after Memorial Day. It brings in bands and other acts to
perform on two stages and features loads of
activities for both children and adults. Its salute to military veterans is capped with a
fireworks show.
The Chamber went all out for the festival
in 2008, hosting hundreds of troops from
Fort Hood and Brook Army Medical Center
in San Antonio for a six-hour ceremony that
included a military jet flyover and parachute drop.
Also that year, the Chamber arranged for
a special ceremony for Medal of Honor recipients and an appearance by The Flag of
Honor, which bears the names of those who
died in the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
This year, the festival was scaled back to
provide a more local focus. Troops the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort
Worth attended.

Call it “volunteer central.”
The Greater Keller Women’s Club has
so many opportunities for community service, no one thing particularly stands out in
club president Pat Flemming’s mind.
But how could only one stand out? The
list includes such local favorites as: the
Community Storehouse’s annual Run in
the Dark fundraiser; the city of Keller’s
Wild, Wild, West Fest; and the Great Keller Chamber of Commerce’s KellerFest,
which readers of The Keller Citizen voted
best festival this year.
“We love to be able to help as many organizations as we can,” Fleming said.
Each year it sends volunteers to about 20 to
25 events.
And the club’s offshoot, The Greater
Keller Women’s Club Foundation, has
given more than $480,000 to area charities
and students in the Keller school district
over the past 10 years, it’s Web site says.
Last year, it raised $78,000 through its annual Garden of Roses Fashion Show for
six scholarships and donations to several
nonprofits, including Christ’s Haven for
Children, ARTSNET of Northeast Tarrant
County, Metroport Meals on Wheels and
Friends of the Keller Public Library.
The club raises funds by its members
working at Texas Motor Speedway races
and Oktoberfest in Southlake. It also compiled a cookbook, titled Texas Wildflours,
which it sells, and raises funds with its annual craft auction dinner.
Its members call it a social club with a
purpose. They decorate Christmas trees
for each of the fire stations and are planning to launch a program this year to help
teach children what it means to volunteer.

year as the volunteer with the highest number of hours, receiving the Gladys Barrett
Award.
Fleming said friendship and involvement is what it’s all about.
“We like to have fun helping others,”
she said.
The club and its foundation, themselves
nonprofits, draw its 200 members from
Keller, Southlake, Colleyville and surrounding cities.
The club meets every second Thursday
of the month and kicks off the year each
September.

What’s the biggest draw to Bear Creek
Park?
Keller parks director Dona Roth Kinney
says it’s a tie between the sand volleyball
courts and the six-tenths of a mile hikeand-bike trail (which includes a bridge that
takes runners, walkers and cyclists over a
pond, making for a picturesque scene).
Those two features are among several
amenities in the 44-acre park, which offers
the largest assortment of activities of any
park in the city’s 426-acre system, Kinney
said.
Other amenities include two playgrounds, a large pavilion with tables, two
gazebos, a small pavilion and stage, sand-

box, picnic tables, grills, four sand volleyball courts, a basketball court, four multiuse sports areas, five baseball practice areas, a fire pit and a garden with a waterfall.
Updates to the playground area were
made in 2008, thanks to a grant from the

Land for the park itself was donated by
Glenn and Gordon Yates in 1969 and dedicated by Tarrant County Commissioner
George “Skeet” Richardson and Keller
Mayor Bill Henderson.
Since then, it has served as a “great loca-
tion” for family reunions and group
events, Kinney said. And because of its
central location, “on the main spine of our
citywide trail system,” getting to the park
is easy, she said.
