After hitting 3 million in 2012, fewer
Canadians head to Caribbean this year
TORONTO — Annual Canadian visitor
figures to the Caribbean finally hit the
three million mark in 2012 but so far this
year it’s been a slow start, as first quarter numbers from Canada are “lagging”,
said Caribbean Tourism Organization
secretary-general Hugh Riley, at a recent
CTO press briefing, part of the Caribbean
Media Marketplace and Caribbean Week
Canada.
“We have a challenge,” said Riley. “We
were up 6.8% from Canada in 2012 but
2013 continues not in the same vein. Is
it a cause for panic? No. But it is a cause
for concern.”
And with a falling dollar and tepid jobs

data, there are challenges ahead.
Another important metric is spend
and the CTO is always looking for ways
to increase revenue. When it comes to
vacation pricing, “whatever figure you
put out there, the consumer expects to
negotiate it downwards,” he said.
Looking to boost the Caribbean’s
value proposition, the CTO is focusing
on better visitor satisfaction and testing
a new visitor survey in six markets, with
an eye to expanding the program across
the board. Destinations will be scored on
seven criteria.
“The Caribbean is not taking visitor satisfaction lightly,” said Riley. The goals for
the survey are two-fold, he said. “It will
show visitors we are paying a great deal
of attention to their needs, and it will also
show us where we need to improve.”
Ultimately the Caribbean wants to
position itself as the most desirable, yearround, warm weather destination by
2017. “It’s a tall order,” says Riley, but the
CTO is focused and determined.
About three in four Canadian visitors
to the Caribbean are from the Ontario
(64%) or Quebec (11%) markets. The
CTO is continuing its quest to get more
vacationers from the west, notably B.C.
and Alberta.

fined markets where we’ve had a longtime presence,” said Calin Rovinescu,
President and Chief Executive Officer
at a special media preview in Toronto
of two of the airline’s newly painted
aircraft. “Our brand in these markets
is widely known, trusted and the preferred choice of customers seeking
good value.”
In addition to new destinations,
Rovinescu announced plans to expand
the airline’s fleet. Its July 1 start-up fleet
will grow to 10 aircraft by the end of
the year, with the addition of six Airbus
A319 aircraft by December 2013 and an
additional four Airbus A319 aircraft by
March 2014 for a total of 14 aircraft by
the end of the 2013-2014 winter season.
“We may be starting modestly but
we intend to increase our leisure carrier
to a total of 50 aircraft,” he added. “The
growth of our leisure carrier in tandem
with mainline fleet renewal and international network expansion is a key element of Air Canada’s overall strategy
for sustainable, profitable growth both
at the mainline and leisure carrier.”
As it was a day of announcements,
Michael Friisdahl, Chief Executive Officer and President of the Air Canada
Leisure Group, also confirmed that
Transport Canada has granted Air
Canada rouge its air operating certificate. This, he said, was a culmination of
eight months of intensive work and “it
cleared the way for Air Canada rouge
flight 1920 to take off for Kingston, Jamaica on July 1.”
Friisdahl also announced efforts to
more fully develop the rouge brand with
a new slogan, ‘Vacation ahead’. “It speaks
to the many benefits and advantages Air

ward to having a vacation on the horizon.”
The “enhanced leisure experience
in the sky”, as Friisdahl described it,
includes modern, restyled interiors
that are available immediately on the
A319 planes and in a phased program
on the B 767-300ER fleet. Both models
will feature ‘player’, a next generation
inflight entertainment system that
streams unlimited live entertainment,
including movies, TV shows, kids programming, music and an ‘About Us’
section, all to passengers’ personal
electronic devices.
Air Canada rouge is one of the first
carriers in North America to offer this
streaming onboard content. For the
month of July, ‘player’ will be complimentary to passengers, and at a nominal $5 charge starting in Aug. 1.
Timed to coincide with rouge’s official debut is the launch of Air Canada
Vacations’ new Passion brochure featuring the 2013-2014 Mexico and Caribbean Collection. Extended winter
offerings have been added this year,
including a new flight out of Halifax to
Santa Clara and a second weekly flight
out of Toronto to Huatulco. In addition, capacity has been significantly increased on popular destinations such
as Jamaica from Toronto and Cancun
from Calgary, Winnipeg and Toronto.
The brochure also showcases the
Air Canada rouge brand, highlighting its Mexico and Caribbean routes.
There’s also a Planning Guide to help
travellers select their perfect vacation, an ‘At a glance’ classification
chart and ‘Flying at a glance’. And as
always, the exclusive programs ‘PriceGuard’, ‘Privileges’ and ‘Aeroplan’ add
more value and savings.
“We’re very eager to introduce this
year’s brochure as it is packed with
outstanding product and savings and
proves that we are set apart from our
competitors,” said Eamonn Ferrin,
President and Chief Operating Officer. “Now that we’re working with
two airline partners, Air Canada and
Air Canada rouge, we’ll have the largest selection of destinations, including
our nonstop flights to St. Kitts and
Great Exuma, the only Canadian tour
operator to offer these options. We
have never been in a better position.
Brighter getaways are here to stay.”

Tourism Ireland
welcomes
announcement of
new Toronto to
Dublin direct route
with Aer Lingus
TORONTO — Tourism Ireland has welcomed the announcement that Aer
Lingus will open a new direct service
route between Toronto and Dublin, beginning April 2014.
The announcement confirms a daily
direct Boeing B757 service between
Toronto and Dublin will operate during the summer season, with up to four
weekly services operating during the
winter months.
The opening of the new Toronto
route marks the return of Aer Lingus to
Canada for the first time in over 30 years,
having last served a passenger route between Shannon and Montreal in 1979.
Further to the direct service to Ireland
from Toronto, Aer Lingus will provide
connections from eight Canadian cities
including Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary. Once in Dublin, flights will connect
to over 20 UK and European cities.
The announcement provides a continued boost for both leisure and business
tourism from Canada to the island of Ireland as recent figures estimate an increase
of 4% in 2012 with close to 120,000 Canadians visiting the Island of Ireland.
Christoph Mueller, Chief Executive,
Aer Lingus, said of the new Toronto
route: “Toronto is the sixth biggest
North American market out of Ireland.
In addition to being a great tourist destination, the city is home to a large Irish
community and we look forward to
welcoming them on board.”

Goway’s Latin America experts sell
top picks and hidden gems
by Kathryn Folliott
While the Goway name is practically
synonymous with Australia and New
Zealand product, its expertise in the
southern hemisphere extends far beyond ‘Downunder’.
The company recently wrapped up
a successful ‘Sell Latin America’ month
that saw agencies blitzed with e-blasts,
promotions and sales calls, all to the
aim of getting the message out that yes,
Goway sells Central and South America
(and Antarctica), and quite well too.
In fact, more than 40 years ago when
Bruce Hodge started Goway, he started
with overland trips in the Americas. So
when the company came back to Latin
America seven or so years ago (with a
dedicated brochure now in its third
year), it was a bit of a homecoming.
The timing was right, said Adam
Hodge, product coordinator, Latin
America division. “People who have
done their safaris and their Australia
trips now come to us for their Latin
America trips,” he said.
And while there are still agents who
don’t know that Goway sells Latin
America, awareness “is much better
than it used to be.”
Goway’s Latin America travel planner includes 15 countries in Central and
South America plus Antarctica, with
over 90 travel ideas featuring active and
luxurious itineraries from Galapagos
Islands and Amazon cruises to Antarctica excursions to Holidays of a Lifetime
vacations in Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Argentina and Chile.
Not only is the brochure extensive,
Goway also offers a well-trained (and
well-travelled) res department. “Part
of Bruce’s formula for the company
was that each department is an expert
in its destination,” said Hodge. “Out of
the eight Latin America res staff at the
call centre, four of them are from Latin
America.”
According to Don Forster, Goway’s
product, sales and marketing manager
for Latin America, the company’s top
four destinations in the region are Ecuador & the Galapagos, Peru and Machu
Picchu, Easter Island (“it’s long haul, but
it’s a bucket list item”) and Costa Rica
and Belize, which “sell themselves to
some extent.”
Lesser-known gems include Colombia, the Falklands and Antarctica, says
Forster. Because of the distance involved, and typically the cost, Antarctica can scare people off “but there are
ways to do it affordably, for instance,
clients can fly down to the peninsula for
a day” from the mainland, says Forster.
And many of the favourite destinations bear up to repeat visits. “Fifty to
sixty percent of the time, people are
doing a one-off trip to one country. But
Chile and Argentina, you can go back
three or four times. Ecuador, probably
twice, and Peru, three times. So there’s a
lot of re-sale potential for travel agents.”
As popular as places like Machu Picchu are, there’s so much more to the
destination, says Hodge. “We’ve seen
our competition sell Latin America as
well. A lot of the time, they’re just selling Machu Picchu and you can live off
that. But to be an expert you have to go
deeper. We can’t pretend we’re experts
without knowing about the more offthe-beaten-track destinations.”
The Peru and Machu Picchu travel
ideas in the brochure are just the tip of
the iceberg, and Goway has many more
options listed on its website.
Agents selling Latin America in recent years have been “blown away”
by the services, accommodation and
infrastructure, says Forster. Just about
all of the countries have stable, strong
economies too.
South America is also a year-round
destination with everything from
jungles to desert to cities to beaches,
he adds. “It’s all there. Plus it’s straight
down, so clients don’t lose a day and
there’s no jetlag.”
See goway.com for more details.

From an all-inclusive luxury cabin to a
new hiking trail, excitement is springing
up throughout Colorado this summer.
Among the new attractions is the
Manitou Springs Incline, which officially opened in February. This popular hiking trail that was once forbidden to the
public is set in an old railway bed used
to transport material for an old water
line. Hikers gain about 2,000 feet elevation in just one mile, which promises
for a challenging workout.
Colorado’s newest state park,
Staunton National Park opened to the
public in May. The park, which was designed as a Rural Historic Landscape in
the National Register formerly served
as an early 20th-century farm. It ranges
in elevation from 8,100 feet along Elk
Creek to 10,240 feet near the summit of
Black Mountain.
Vail Mountain, the largest ski resort
in the U.S., continues to celebrate its 50th
anniversary with new summer activities
at Adventure Ridge. Highlights include
a four-line, 1,200 foot-long zipline, two
aerial challenge courses, a large climbing wall and ‘summer tubing’.
The High Lonesome Zipline debuted
in May at Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort
and Spa. The attraction mixes adventure and adrenaline with historic overviews and features five ziplines ranging
from 370 feet to 1,600 feet.
New accommodation options are
also developing in the state. The Ranch
at Emerald Valley is scheduled to open
Aug. 1 and features 10 mountain-style
cabins that will lodge up to 34 guests
among them.
The Stanley Hotel and The Lodge
at the Stanley have undergone major
renovations. The Cascades restaurant
now features a vintage Whiskey Bar
constructed around 1909 and offers
250 different wine labels.
The Lodge at the Stanley (formerly
the Manor House) has been completely
renovated and transformed into a bed
and breakfast. The Lodge has 40 rooms
with homemade continental breakfast

Orlando undergoes
biggest expansion
in its history
An estimated US$5 billion of capital
investment across Central Florida tourism industry makes for the biggest development in Orlando’s history.
Setting another record, Orlando welcomed 57 million visitors in 2012, raising 4.9% since 2011. These records continue to make Orlando the most visited
destination in America, with the top
international markets being Canada,
UK and Brazil.
To accommodate the rapid increase
in tourism, Orlando International Airport has blueprinted a plan to spend
$2.1 billion on improvements through
2018. These improvements will include
a new 16-gate terminal complex and
extension of the airport’s people mover
system. Orlando International will be
the first airport in the U.S. to test selfserve kiosks intended to accelerate the
international arriving process and reduce passenger-processing times with
Customs and Border Protection.
Orlando International Airport isn’t
the only thing receiving funds for improvement. Walt Disney World Resort,
SeaWorld Orlando and Universal Orlando Resort are also on the expansion
project list. This summer marks the
first for New Fantasyland, the largest
growth in the 41-year history of the
Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney
World Resort. These multi-year developments will double the size of the
existing Fantasyland and in 2014 the
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train coaster will
begin operation.
SeaWorld has completed its biggest
expansion in company history with the
introduction of ‘Antarctica: Empire of
the Penguin’. This family adventure ride
features a temperature of -1 degrees
Celsius, making it the coldest theme
park in Orlando.
Finally, opening this summer at Universal Orlando is ‘Transformers: The
Ride 3D’ while in 2014, The Wizarding
World of Harry Potter will expand to
include Diagon Alley.

For some R&R, visitors can relax in

Sandals Resorts
International
simplifies room
category names
MONTEGO BAY — Sandals Resorts
International is unveiling new room
category names for all accommodation
options at Sandals resorts and Beaches
resorts.
The simplification of the titles of various rooms allows both travel agents and
their clients to better understand the
resorts’ accommodation options, as well
as identify the value and amenities associated with each room category.
“After listening to feedback from
travel agents, we realized that creating
simplified and intuitive category names
helps eliminate confusion in the booking process,” said Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart, Chairman of Sandals Resorts International. “We hope the new system
helps agents and their clients better
understand our options, and provide
them with a discernible difference when
choosing the best room category based
on preferences and expectations.”
The new room names follow a stan-

5 Steps to Increase Revenue from Group Sales
As part of an agent’s specialty portfolio, group departures become a necessary
apparatus in your toolkit of selling options.
President’s Podium: Fuel Surcharges. It’s not a tax, so why treat it
like a tax?
Canada has some of the lowest government taxes related to fuel purchase on
an airline ticket. Much lower compared to many other countries. The problem
is the fact that no one is monitoring and taking control of what consumers
pay to airlines in the form of additional fuel surcharges.

said Annika Klint, Managing Director of
KAI. “Louis Cruises continues to enhance
its offerings, presenting not only the
popular destinations of Athens, Mykonos, Patmos, Rhodes, Heraklion (Crete),
Santorini, Istanbul and Kusadasi, but
also lesser-known gems. The introduction of nine new destinations, including Samos, Milos, Syros, Kos, Ios, Symi,
Chios, Cesme and Bodrum, encourages
a more in-depth experience that showcases their Aegean expertise. KAI is eager
to help the cruise line continue on its
growth path with strategic initiatives to
educate the Canadian trade of the benefits of selling Louis Cruises and increasing bookings from Canada.”

ROUND UP
The JW Marriott Camelback Inn Resort & Spa will unveil its new
Ambiente golf course at Camelback Golf Club this fall, the first
new golf course development project in the Phoenix-Scottsdale
and Paradise Valley areas in over five years.
The completion of the US$10 million Ambiente golf course
caps off a seven year, $70 million Marriott renewal project at
Camelback Inn, designed to “blend reverence for the past with
relevance for the future”, says the company.
From preserving the resort’s 1930s adobe brick to the stylish renovation of the Inn’s 453 casita-style guestrooms, and from
a new 20,000 square-foot, hi-tech grand ballroom to the debut of
BLT Steak, Laurent Tourondel’s modern American steakhouse, the
renewal project involved virtually every aspect of the historic resort.
Ambiente will replace the old Indian Bend golf course and
complement the popular Padre golf course.
Set on 125 acres of Sonoran Desert landscape in affluent Paradise Valley, Camelback Inn features 453 oversized guest rooms
and suites, each with a private entrance and garden patio or balcony. The resort also offers 36 holes of championship golf, six
tennis courts, the 32,000 square foot Spa at Camelback Inn, two
swimming pools and seven restaurants and lounges. See camelbackinn.com.
Chicago’s first Wyndham Grand
Hotel opens its doors
Wyndham Hotel Group has rebranded the former Hotel 71 in
downtown Chicago as the 334-room Wyndham Grand Chicago
Riverfront, expanding the Wyndham Hotels and Resorts brand
footprint in key markets throughout the U.S.
Wyndham Hotel Group’s management company began operating the 39-storey hotel in November 2012 as a Wyndhamaffiliated property.
The property is in the midst of completing a multi-million
dollar renovation project and the first phase, scheduled to be
completed this summer, includes redesigned guest rooms, remodelled guest bathrooms and improved elevators.
The second phase, scheduled for completion by the end of
2013, enhances the hotel’s meeting and event space by adding
a newly constructed, 4,700-square-foot Grand Ballroom and a
1,660-square-foot outdoor terrace connected to the existing
39th Floor Penthouse Ballroom.

The property is right in the heart of downtown Chicago on
