…In the midst of chaos with stress, drugs, alcohol,
bullying, distracted driving, time, suicide, identity,
violence, personal safety, needing to be needed,
needing to be valued by the community,
SLS is Michigan’s answer for student-led social change
with well prepared and supported advisors.
The change needs to be BOLD and must be met head-on
with conviction for a better world. How we react to it today
needs to be far more innovative and
creative than ever before.
Advisors do not need to struggle with how to support
students today and run a chapter; SLS will train them.
SLS makes advisor’s role easier.

“SLS is dedicated to our chapters and we are dedicated to each other. SLS gives us the
opportunity to be the great innovators of society in our local community. We are a
student-led organization, but we would not be where we are without our advisors. They
aren’t only our teachers. Advisors are leaders; our consciences reminding us to be
semi-rational to get things done. To some, advisors are role models; to others they are
much more. These advisors do not stand for SLS; they stand for us. Every day they make
sacrifices to support us. These are the men and women who stand for what we strive to be
as adults. From personal experience, I can say that these advisors, my advisor, loves us
and I know many of us love them back. They make a sacrifice by standing on the sidelines
of all of our events, continuously supporting us. They are the embodiment of what we
strive to be. These advisors-teachers and counselors-deserve our utmost respect, love,
support, and appreciation. Today, it is our time to give them what they have given to us.”

Advisors:
Traditions and rituals help develop strong connections
between people. Traditions and rituals establish a foundation,
engage students, and bring all SLS members in a chapter
closer together as if they were a family. Advisors encourage
members to create traditions and rituals within their SLS
chapter to provide unity and a feeling of comfort among all
members. They allow each member to feel connected to the
group. Traditions, rituals, and ceremonies are passed on from
board to board, member to member, just as photos, journals,
and stories are passed on in families through generations.
