MAY 2015
Hi,
The biennial conference “Shortsea Shipping, Current and Future”, which ran May 13-14 in Montreal,
was a great success. The participation of industry stakeholders and players from other activity
sectors gave rise to highly relevant exchanges. The resulting thought-provoking discussions will no
doubt fuel the SLS’ and Québec SSS Council’s new projects and initiatives. Stay tuned!
Sunny days announce the return of SLS’ traditional golf tournament. Once again, this year, it will
be held at the Lévis golf club…on Tuesday, August 18. Registration is open, so book your place now!
SLS continues to monitor current marine-sector files: the Canada Transportation Act review, hours
of work and hours of rest for maritime personnel, ballast waters, the maritime strategy, the Plan
Nord, shortsea shipping here and elsewhere. The challenges are numerous and SLS is as enthusiastic
as always in meeting them!
Happy reading,

Shortsea Shipping, Current and Future
2015 Conference
A step in the right direction for
more efficient logistics!
The conference “Shortsea Shipping,
Current and Future”, held on May 1314 at the Port of Montreal’s Iberville
Passenger Terminal under the theme
"Shipping, Easy as AB (Short)Sea", was
a great success. Over 90 participants—
about half from outside the maritime
shipping industry—had the pleasure of
hearing our speakers present shortsea
shipping operations and services offered in the St. Lawrence - Great Lakes
network.

SLS Events
On a splendid, sunny day, they enjoyed a guided cruise
aboard the AML Cavalier Maxim, which sailed the Port
of Montreal’s waters, offering a unique view—and
for many participants, a new one—of port facilities.
A wide range of issues were raised during the presentations and discussions that followed, all designed
to set the right conditions to strengthen the shortsea
shipping system: cargo consolidation, financial and
political support, logistics innovation, facilitating infrastructures, costs, awareness of shortsea shipping,
pooling transport and multimodality, storage and distribution methods. SLS intends to study these issues
in greater depth to determine the concrete measures
that can be implemented to undertake long-term,
far-reaching changes in ways of doing things in the
transport sector.
Among the highlights, a very special mention to the
Oceanex team for the Connaigra’s spectacular arrival at the Bickerdike dock, just as Steve Bilas from
Oceanex was ending his presentation. Who said that
shipping doesn’t do “just in time”?
SLS would like to extent its heartfelt appreciation
to all of its partners, without whom the event would
not have been possible. A special thanks goes to the
Minister for Transport and the Implementation of the
Maritime Strategy, Jean D'Amour, for his speech on
the elements of the upcoming strategy.

Logistics for Dummies
Intermodal vs. Multimodal
While these terms may seem synonymous, and are often used as such, they are not. Here are some keys
to differentiating them.
Intermodal is the movement of cargo from origin
to destination by several modes of transport, where
each of these modes has a different transport provider or entity responsible, each with its own independent contract.

Multimodal is the movement of cargo from origin to destination by several modes of transport
where each of these modes has a different transport provider or entity responsible, but under a
single contract.

Canada Transportation Act review
SLS meets Secretariat members
On May 19, SLS received the members of the Canada Transportation Act review committee in its
offices. Very constructive discussions were held on many topics of interest, more specifically, the
role reserved for shortsea shipping in Canada’s transportation landscape. SLS will keep you posted on
further developments in this regard.

IMQ Gala Meritas, which was held on May 8, was, again, a great success! Students,
staff and shipping companies came along to celebrate of our 1st and 2nd grade
student’s academic merit and efforts. We also had the opportunity to highlight the
value of students who stand out for their assistance to their peers and those who
constantly show commitment to the IMQ. 52 scholarships totaling $ 37,500 were awarded during this
festive evening which was held under the theme «The Love Boat! «. In addition to these awards, four
honorable mentions were awarded this year. One to a student, Pierre Hurteau-Corbin and three to
staff members: Mr. Jacques Gagné, maneuver and Mr. Richard Raymond and Mr. Alexandre Ouellet,
teachers in mechanics.

GreenTech 2015
SLS will be on hand
As this newsletter is being published,
SLS is in Seattle for the opening of the
8th edition of GreenTech, the marine industry’s environmental conference, organized by the very dedicated Green Marine
team. The program promises a unique,
comprehensive overview of the industry’s
environmental concerns, with a focus on
issues affecting the West Coast. Technologies, social acceptability, underwater
noise, air emissions… all themes that are
sure to encourage reflection and discussion. May 27-29 in Seattle, Washington.
Visit the Green Marine website for further
details.
Voluntary vessel speed reduction measures
Since November 2011, these voluntary vessel speed reduction measures are designed to protect St. Lawrence riverbank erosion. The measures suggest a speed limit of 10 knots
for vessels heading upstream and 14 knots for vessels heading
downstream in four areas along the St. Lawrence Seaway:
Sorel, Contrecoeur, Verchères and Varennes.
