CAPPA 2014
Collaboration: Kick it up a notch!
While in El Paso
El Paso Museum of Art : The El Paso Museum of Art is the fine arts museum for city and, in fact, the surrounding
region. Located on the boundary of Texas, Mexico and New Mexico, the museum welcomes to its doors one of the
world’s largest international border communities. Its permanent collection houses more than 5,000 works of art,
including the Samuel H. Kress Collection of European art from the 13th to the 18th centuries. It also has a diverse
schedule of temporary exhibits and a major collection of contemporary works. Admission is free although some
admission may apply to some traveling exhibits. www.elpasoartmuseum.org
El Paso Museum of History: Calling all history buffs! What started in 1974 as a Cavalry Museum is today the
El Paso Museum of History – promoting the understanding and significance of the rich multicultural and
multinational history of the border region. In 2000, citizens passed a $6.5 million bond to ensure the museum
would remain a shining cultural gem throughout the 21st century. www.elpasotexas.gov/history
White Sands National Monument: Rising from the heart of the Tularosa Basin is one of the world’s great natural
wonders – the glistening white sands of New Mexico. Great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed
275 square miles of desert, creating the world’s largest gypsum dune field. White Sands National Monument
preserves a major portion of this unique dune field, along with the plants and animals that live here. President
Herbert Hoover proclaimed the area as a national monument in 1933, and its popularity remains strong today.
You’ll want to visit this national treasure. www.nps.gov/whsa/index.htm
Ruidoso: Ruidoso, New Mexico, is high in the Rocky Mountains of southeastern New Mexico and provides yearround entertainment. Among its offerings are the Ruidoso Downs Race Track; Ski Apache, the perfect ski resort
for both beginning and advanced skiers and snowboarders; and two of New Mexico’s finest casinos, Inn of the
Mountain Gods and Billy the Kid Casino. The Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts is a world class performance
hall, and many Ruidoso venues offer live music nightly. If you’re eager for an overnight stay, the area boasts a
selection of quaint cabins as well as resorts, bed and breakfasts, boutique hotels, campgrounds and RV parks.

COLLABORATION: KICKING IT UP A NOTCH!
El Paso, Texas
Saturday, October 11 – Wednesday, October 15, 2014
Two hosts welcome us for our 2014 convention
New Mexico State University
University of Texas at El Paso
COLLABORATION: KICKING IT UP A NOTCH!
CAPPA 2014
Collaboration: Kick it up a notch!
Hosted by:
New Mexico State University
University of Texas at El Paso
The NMSU Aggies say the entire state of New Mexico is their campus, and they’re not kidding. A comprehensive
land-grant institution, NMSU provides learning opportunities to a diverse population of students and
community members at five campuses, a satellite learning center in Albuquerque, cooperative extension office
located in each of the state’s 33 counties, 12 research and science centers, and through distance education.
That’s a lot to keep going, especially when you serve 29,000 students and claim a spot in the top tier of the
U.S. News & World Report Best National Universities. But the university has a strong history to build on. New
Mexico was still a territory when Las Cruces College opened the doors of its two-room building in 1888. Today,
NMSU sits on 900 acres and welcomes students from all 50 states and from around the world. We are excited to
include the NMSU Aggies, part of the Rocky Mountain Association of Physical Plant Administrators, in our
central CAPPA conference.
The nearly 23,000 Miners from UTEP are building on a rich tradition. Founded in 1914 as the Texas State School of
Mines and Metallurgy, it is today a dynamic urban university recognized nationally for its leadership in changing
the face of U.S. higher education. More than 75 percent of its students are Hispanic, mirroring the population
of the region and, increasingly, the entire United States. Located in one of the largest bi-national communities
in the world, UTEP is unique among research institutions. The University invests nearly $80 million in research
annually and still maintains the lowest net cost of any research university in the country. Ranked #1 in the nation
for improving the social mobility of its students and #12 overall by Washington Monthly magazine, UTEP is
dedicated to becoming the first national research university serving a 21st century student demographic.
Two is better than one, they say, so the collaboration of these two
outstanding universities ensures a great CAPPA conference for 2014.
Sunday Night Football
The fun kicks off with our traditional SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL PARTY! Are you ready? Get set because
here it comes!
Monday, October 13
Kick-off Breakfast
We’re kickin’ up our collaboration a notch with our Monday Morning Kick-off breakfast. It’s always an exciting
start to the CAPPA Conference! Following a delicious breakfast, guests and attendees will be treated to opening
remarks that promise an energetic beginning to our Monday morning – and to our week.
Educational Sessions
Our EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS are always a highlight for conference attendees, and this year we offer 18 different
options. That ensures a few things: You will find the information you want; you will meet experts in a variety of
fields who can help you meet goals; you will network with other facility managers who face the same challenges
as you; you will find solutions to issues. All that adds up to real collaboration: working with others to produce
something or achieve a goal.
Guest/Spouse Tour: “Passage to Style”
Could this be a shopper’s paradise? You can decide after visiting the El Paso Saddle Blanket – a two-acre
complex that features all things Southwest – blankets, cowboy hats and boots, home décor, rugs, pottery,
baskets, purses, and sterling silver and turquoise jewelry. You’ll even find one-of-a-kind items and antiques.
The Saddle Blanket has been ridin’ high for 42 years, and this El Paso mainstay is a must-see during your stay:
www.elpasosaddleblanket.com
After shopping, our tour will stop for a quaint lunch along the way.
Saturday, October 11
El Paso translates as “the passage,” and we hope our CAPPA friends take the passage into a great experience and
spend some time getting to know this west Texas city: “Passage into El Paso”
Sunday, October 12 Annual Golf Tournament
Imagine driving down fairways with majestic mountains to your left and beautiful desert valleys to your right.
That’s exactly the setting for our annual golf tournament, but don’t let scenery sidetrack you. The New Mexico
State University Golf Course is tough, proving a challenge to golfers of all skill levels. Framed by the majestic
Organ Mountains to the east and the picturesque Mesilla Valley to the west, this 18-hole course features the
unique combination of both traditional and links style golf course features. Opened in 1963, it was designed by
Floyd Farley and is regarded as one of the most outstanding facilities in the Southwest. www.nmsugolf.com
“Passage to History”
Enjoy the quaint town of Old Mesilla. Step back in time to a 1800s border town when you enjoy the quaint town
of Old Mesilla. Some 150 years ago, it was a major stop for travelers between San Antonio and San Diego, and its
town plaza welcomed the famous Butterfield Stagecoach. Town folk once watched Western legend Billy the Kid
stand trial for murder in their courtroom. One of the oldest missions in the valley, San Albino Church was built of
adobe in 1855 and still offers masses today. Shopping and cultural events bring the town into modern day, but its
history is something to savor. www.lascrucescvb.org/historic-old-mesilla
Before leaving Old Mesilla, the group will enjoy lunch at La Posta, one of the most famous restaurants in the
Southwest. Started in 1939, it offers many fine traditional “New Mexico” Mexican dishes from century-old recipes
handed down for generations. Before leaving, be sure to catch La Posta’s very own chili shop and stroll around the
La Posta Compound. www.laposta-de-mesilla.com
After lunch, our day continues at the La Vina Winery, New Mexico’s oldest winery. Located in the heart of the
Mesilla Valley, La Vina produced estate wines from its 24-acre vineyard. Be sure to enjoy some samples … and
take some home. www.lavinawinery.com
Exhibit Hall Opens
Collaboration is the key word for our 2014 conference, and nowhere is that more evident than at our EXHIBIT
HALL. Always a highlight of the CAPPA conferences, our exhibit hall is home to business partners who will show
off products, technology and ideas that guarantee your facility a unique edge in meeting its needs. Plus, you can
start collaborating with these exhibitors – some of the best business partners out there. Visit the hall several times
during the conference so you don’t miss a thing.
History meets 2014: El Paso is full of history, but this brand new shopping center is totally 21st century. The
Fountains at Farah is a 600,000-square-foot major center that boasts top retailers and restaurants. It opens in the
fall 2013 and promises a grand shopping experience: www.shopfountainsatfarah.com
A Beautiful Evening For Dinner at UTEP
“Passage to Bhutan”: El Paso is probably the last place you’d look for Bhutanese-style architecture, but step
onto the UTEP campus, and you might think you’re in South Asia – specifically, in Bhutan, a small country in the
Himalayan mountains between India and China. The first dean’s wife suggested the architectural style would be
a good fit for the school after seeing photos in a 1914 National Geographic Magazine. One hundred years later,
the university remains committed to preserving the architectural style. We’ll use the influence for our evening
of networking, which features a special campus tour – celebrating the university’s 100 years of classic Bhutanese
style and academic excellence.
Tuesday, October 14
We want to give you every opportunity to enjoy our education sessions, so they will be continued today. Guests
also will be given the opportunity to tour New Mexico State University.
Guest/Spouse Tours: “Passage to the trail”
Together, we travel down the Mission Trail – the most historic area of El Paso. Three main stops make up the
trail – San Elizario, Socorro Mission and the Ysleta Mission. Each is surrounded by shops of art and history and
boutiques with authentic treasures from Mexico. The drive includes beautiful views and a jaunt on one of the
oldest highways in the country. Yes, it’s an historic day – with trail including the Tigua Cultural Center and its five
centuries of Pueblo history and tradition: www.elpasomissiontrail.com
Lunch at El Bandito Cantina: One stop along the Mission Trail will be for lunch at El Bandito Cantina. It’s a great
place to enjoy authentic Mexican food and bask in the wonderful Southwest weather. El Bandito is one of only a
few patio restaurants on the Mission Trail. Indoor seating is available. Either way – you’re sure to feel and eat like
a real local! www.visitelpasomissiontrail.com/explore/el-bandido-cantina-restaurant.html
Annual Awards Banquet
Our day comes to a close with the Annual Awards Banquet, honoring CAPPA members and those outstanding
in our profession. Be sure to join us for an elegant evening that honors our peers.
