Vision: Kuumba Lynx works to liberate the lives of Chicago youth, using art and performance to instill leadership, collaboration, resiliency, responsibility, confidence, and a love of learning. Through consistent year-round youth development, social justice and arts activities, our ultimate aim is to equip vibrant young minds with the essential tools for enduring success in life. Goals: 1. Grow our own collective of grassroots Hip Hop educators. Supporting these emerging practitioners as art makers and facilitators of Hip Hop art and culture. Where they are exposed to pathways and provided performance, teaching & transitional leadership opportunities as well as resources for creating, branding & promoting new works. 2. Galvanize Chicago youth and their communities around critical literacy that strengthens their literacy and engages them beyond reading & writing into knowledge of self and community, as well as the applicable practice around issues of equity including education, health, arts & culture, and civic engagement. Meeting youth where they are so as to encourage active engagement with the discourse each day through Hip Hop arts. 3. Nurture youth leadership through collaborations with citywide institutions to engage their genuine voice & collective lens; placing leadership spaces at the center of learning and providing opportunities for youth to drive programming and decision making processes. These students in particular taught me that "I should learn more from the process of teaching than what I am trying to teach in class." I use this as a constant reminder, especially when I get too deep into worrying about the preparation for stage performances with huge community audiences. Though I am utterly proud of the amazing performance opportunities and experiences that UDP has shared with audiences, I am constantly asking myself, what are the participants taking with them when they graduate or leave our program? Has this process affected their lives, and if yes, how so? What I can attest to is that students always come back to visit and freely drop into the studio to say hi, to share stories with new students, to help with shows and dance choreography. I always feel good knowing community has been established here and that they always feel welcome.
