Safety Notes: When cooking, have a fire extinguisher or bucket of sand at hand in case an out of control fire occurs outside of the BBQ. It is advisable
that all participants wear appropriate clothing and listed PPE at all times. Only use power tools in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions. All work
must be carried out outdoors in a well ventilated area. Ensure that your BBQ is sited on solid ground away from any flammables. Keep children and pets
away from the lit BBQ during and after use. Do not use in the vicinity of persons under the influence of alcohol. You will need to carry out any necessary
risk assessments if using in public recreation areas, parks, or camping grounds, and ensure it is legal to do so. Be aware of very high temperatures. If any
burns or scalds occur seek professional medical advice immediately. Only handle the metal roaster with appropriate approved heat resistant gloves.
DIY BUILD GUIDE
STEP 1 - Using wire cutters or tin snips, cut two mesh discs
to fit inside your two cooking utensil holders.
Then measure the inside diameter and height of your
utensil holders and cut two lengths of mesh that will fit
inside.
Place the two mesh discs in bases of each utensil
holder. Roll up the length of mesh and fit inside
the holders and push into the sides to ensure a
snug fit.
STEP 2 - Make a handle with a small piece of timber. The
length of the handle is not critical, the shorter the handle
is the less movement you’ll have to do to turn it. 120mm
works well.
Drill an 8mm hole in one end for the threaded bar to go
through and a 3mm hole the other end to accommodate a
screw to hold the handle in place.
The handle is a 100mm piece of broom handle.
Fit altogether as pictured below
ROASTING GUIDE
Fill one of the utensil holders with green coffee beans,
place the other on top and tighten the wing nuts.
Light a good amount of charcoal in the base of your BBQ, wait until all flames have gone and the
coals are whitening.
Place the roaster on the BBQ where the grill holders are and start turning. You will need to turn
your roaster constantly to prevent the beans from burning.
When you begin to hear the beans making a cracking noise this is light roast. If you want a medium
roast continue past the first crack to when you hear a second round of cracks. Carry on roasting
through the second crack for dark and very dark roasts. If you wish to roast your beans further to a
dark roast you will need to increase the height of your roaster from the coals as you don't want
them to burn or catch fire. Once you have the desired roast you will need to take the roaster off
the heat using your heatproof gloves.
Undo the nuts and pour the beans thinly onto a baking tray to cool down quickly.
Leave the beans to rest for at least 2-3 days.
Then you are ready to grind them up and make a lovely cup of fresh coffee, by adding water thats
just off the boil. It is best to store coffee in a dry, sealed container that is out of the light. These
beans will keep a wonderful full flavour for up to two weeks.
