Asset Sales I oppose the sale of assets generally as the case for making them hasn't been made. The neo-liberal propaganda from some Councillors and the Editors of The Press in opposition to the counter arguments from the Peoples' Choice Councillors is self serving. The arguments the Council has put up to date is based on a very speculative basis. Costings, and even indicative drawings, haven't been done on many of the projects of infrastructure that need repairing. Keeping these assets - like Orion in Council ownership does provide definite community benefit as we found out prior to, and during, the earthquake saga. Onion was in the process since 1990 of strengthening its network. Costs have been kept in check, yet good returns to the Council have been made. I support the Unions Canterbury submission where it compared the Wellington City Council privatised electricity company versus the Council water supply and looked at their differing performance and costs to rate payers. 2. Cost Sharing Agreement This needs to be revisited both as to timing and what is required. The Government hasn't consulted with the citizens of Christchurch to my knowledge. -4- We don't need the Convention in its proposed location (and this is against a backdrop of many other Convention Centres being established around the country. The alleged advantages accrue to the private sector - hospitality, accommodation and conference organisers, etc. Minimal income is generated to the Council or Government coffers, so let the private sector build and fund it t a design, location and facilities that they desire. We don't need the Rugby Stadium (and the way the Crusaders are playing they will only need the current stadium for ever. 3. Valuing the services that Council provides I appreciate that some may see the Summertimes Festival as a bit of a luxery. But it is important that the range of shows available is maintained as it does provide some light relief from the trevails of the earthquakes. 4. New Brighton Bridge - Pages Road This bridge is a major life line to the Brighton Community and the retail sector. It is in a bad state of repair and getting worse. Plans to merely "repair" it are penny wise and pound foolish. Even if it has to be replaced at a longer timeframe this should be established. The cost and loss of human life if it fails would be a major calamity. -5-
