Last year, 2,413 individuals from 28 states, the
District of Columbia and four foreign countries
visited the Somerset County Chamber of
Commerce, bringing the total number of visitors
to the Chamber since 1983 to 130,717 as of Jan.
1. Naturally, Pennsylvania led the way with 2,011
visitors, followed by Ohio (80) and Maryland (50).
The busiest month was July with 622 visitors,

Blooms of Hope program: The Somerset County
Blooms of Hope committee is accepting
orders for bunches or potted daffodils through
Feb. 26. Flowers will be distributed March 1618. Proceeds benefit the Somerset Oncology
Center and Somerset Hospital. For more

New address: The Johnstown Symphony
Orchestra has relocated to 500 Galleria Drive,
Suite 284, Johnstown, PA 15904.
Director named: Tim Bugas has been named
director of sales and marketing at Nemacolin
Woodlands Resort, Farmington. Additionally,
the resort’s Falling Rock has received the
AAA Five Diamond Designation, a rating the
luxury hotel has attained since 2006.
Students receive award: A team from Somerset
Area High School won the Best Transportation
System award in the Carnegie Science Center’s
Chain Reaction Contraption Contest Dec. 11.
Teams created a complex machine to complete
an everyday task in 20 steps or more, and the
contraptions were judged on functionality,
complexity and creativity in achieving the
task.
New management announced: Colby Custer
has been named clubhouse manager at the
Somerset Country Club. Custer replaces Willi
Aldom, who will continue working on a parttime basis to coordinate special events and
future renovation projects.
Newspaper selects recipients: The Daily
American 10K Challenge Committee has
announced that Somerset County Food Pantries
and Somerset County Drug-Free Communities
Coalition will be the beneficiaries of the 2016
race. Additionally, five journalists from the
Daily American and its sister publication, Our
Town, recently received awards in the Schurz
Communications Editorial Contest for the
second quarter of 2015.
Resort opens shop: In January, Seven Springs
Mountain Resort opened Highlands Market, a
boutique country market offering local artisan
meats, cheeses and specialty food items. The
market, located west of the resort’s main gate
on County Line Road, will eventually expand
to offer craft beers.
Walmart donation: The Somerset Walmart
recently made a $2,000 donation to the
Somerset Vol. Fire Dept. for a new portable
radio.
CPA firm receives top rating: Barnes Saly &

Company, P.C., recently received the highest
rating in an independent peer review of its
accounting and auditing practices. The review
concluded that the firm complies with the
quality control standards set by the American
Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the
national professional organization of CPAs.
College awarded grant:
Pennsylvania
Highlands Community College was one of
only 38 cultural institutions nationwide to
receive a Common Heritage Grant from the
National Endowment for the Humanities.
The grant will enable the school to host
“digitization days” to capture local historical
records and artifacts.
Organization receives donations: In December,
the Salvation Army Somerset Service Center
received a $500 donation from Boyer Financial
Planning, Somerset. The donation was given
in honor of the firm’s top clients in lieu of
individual Christmas gifts. The Salvation
Army also received 48 coats from St. Peter’s
Knights of Columbus through the national
Knights of Columbus Coats for Kids program.
Event raises funds: The Pittsburgh Social
Exchange raised $5,000 for The Challenge
Program and $2,000 for the National Kidney
Foundation during the organization’s Holiday
Party Dec. 18 at Stage AE in Pittsburgh.
Donation: The Somerset Fraternal Order of
Eagles recently made a $1,000 donation to the
Somerset County Reality Tour drug prevention
program.
Organization receives grant: Victim Services
Inc. of Cambria and Somerset counties
received a $48,814 grant through the
Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and
Delinquency’s Endowment Act to fund training
and certification of 10 licensed mental health
therapists in Eye Movement Desensitization
and Reprocessing. The therapy has been
extensively researched and proven effective
for the treatment of trauma.
Manufacturer makes donation: Employees of
Norse Dairy Systems, Somerset, raised $2,000
for Somerset County Camp Cadet through
pizza sales and chances.
Davis appointed: J&J Truck Bodies &
Trailers, Somerset, recently announced that
Tim Davis has been appointed regional sales
manager. In this position, Davis will be
responsible for supporting and developing

J&J’s customer base and brand awareness in
Western Pennsylvania, west of Rochester, NY,
Ohio and West Virginia.
Bank opens branch: In January, Somerset Trust
Co. opened its 31st branch inside the Giant
Eagle on Scalp Avenue in Richland Township,
Cambria County.
Windber facilities part of cancer project: Windber
Research Institute and Windber Medical
Center will be participating in Cancer
MoonShot 2020, which calls for small-scale
clinical trials of cancer immunotherapy. As
many as 10 drug companies are anticipated
to participate in the program with up to
20,000 patients over the next three years.
Additionally, Covelli Enterprises, owner of
Panera Bread in Johnstown, donated $9,500
to Windber Medical Center in January. The
money was raised through several fund raisers
held at restaurant in 2015.
Company plans investment: In January, Sheetz
Inc. announced plans to invest more than $15
million to raise wages of store employees
across the company without reducing hours
for full-time employees.
Organization names officers: The Rockwood
Fire Dept. named its 2016 fire officers at its
annual banquet in January. They are Chad
Lytle, chief; Kenny Brown, first assistant chief;
Adam Lytle, second assistant chief; Bradley
Sanner, third assistant chief; Travis Robison,
captain; Bradley King, lieutenant; Michael
Kaufman, chaplain; Stacey Heiple, EMS
coordinator; Gerald Hatfield, truck foreman;
Jackie Felesky, secretary; Greg Miller, vice
president; Jessica Sanner, treasurer; Scott
Gary, assistant truck foreman; and Michael
Felesky, president. Additionally, Miller was
named the department’s Firefighter of the Year
while Gary was named Fireman of the Year.
Leadership named: Citizens Neighborhood
Bank has named Michael Paul regional
president of its Somerset region, which
includes Somerset County and its Meyersdale
and Berlin branches. Lorie Hoffman was
also recently promoted to branch manager in
Berlin.
Hospital establishes council: Conemaugh
Meyersdale Medical Center is seeking area
residents to serve on its new patient advisory
council. Anyone interested in serving can call

Explore higher ed opportunities Chamber offering
at annual College & Technical Fair three scholarships
The 31st College & Technical Fair,
sponsored by the Somerset County
Chamber of Commerce and the Somerset
County Counselors Association, is set for
March 30 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Pa.
National Guard Armory in Friedens.
This annual event is free and open to
the public, but is specifically designed
to assist high school students and their
families explore higher education and
other opportunities after graduation.
Representatives from a variety of
colleges, trade schools, technical
institutions, business schools, nursing
programs and the military will be on
hand to provide information and answer
questions regarding courses, college life,
admissions and financial aid packages.
This year’s College & Technical Fair
will also include an employer career
panel.

supervisory skills and team-building
in a diverse workplace are among the
possibilities.
Training can be delivered where
needed and small businesses with fewer
than 50 employees may be eligible for
financial support through a grant from
the Partnership for Rural Industrial
Development Enterprises.
As Somerset County’s partner since
1989, Allegany College of Maryland has
demonstrated its commitment to serve
the community by offering education and
training programs, both credit and noncredit, that meet the needs of individuals
and employers.
