A Message to Our Donors
Each of us has a unique role with Billings Clinic and have different perspectives and
purposes, yet we all share the same unwavering commitment:

• We value the importance of good health through excellent health care for our vast region

• We realize philanthropy makes a positive difference in our ability to fulfill our mission
and achieve our vision
As you review this publication, think about how your gifts, and the gifts of others, have
made a difference in the lives of so many. Think about the significant impact $53.7 million
of philanthropy has made since Billings Clinic Foundation was established in the
mid-1980s. Think about the people, generous donors like you, who make our results
possible… from a nurse who gives an hour of pay every paycheck – to a business
supporting the Classic in good times and challenging times – to a husband and wife
advancing our cause through their estate planning. Innovations leading to the discovery of new treatments, technology and cures for disease
make this a rewarding and exciting time in health care. Yet, there are uncertain and
challenging times ahead as we grapple with health care reform and the ability to sustain
America’s position of providing the best health care in the world. However, we are certain
that philanthropy will continue to play an increasingly critical role in helping Billings Clinic
stay on the leading edge of delivering excellence in health care quality, safety, service

1 Research Center Science Expo: Inspired the
imaginations of Montana’s future scientists by
conducting the regional youth science competition.
2 Educational Scholarships: Provided Foundation
scholarships to worthy high school and college students
pursuing careers in health care.
3 Cardiac Services: Acquired state-of-the-art equipment to
provide the best in care for our heart patients.
4 Cancer Care Unit: Constructed our beautiful and serene
inpatient cancer care unit.
5 Robotic Surgical System: Acquired the
innovative da Vinci® Surgical System bringing
a new generation of technology to our
operating rooms.
6 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: Expanded our
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and provided
state-of-the-art equipment to care for our
newborn patients.
7 Pediatric Cancer Care: Assisted young cancer
patients and their families with costs related to
their battle against cancer.

8 Pediatric Diabetes and Specialty Clinic:
Constructed a new pediatric specialty
clinic expanding specialized care and
research opportunities for children with
diabetes or lung disease.
9 Mary Alice Fortin Health Conference
Center: Modernized and updated the
technology and interiors of our health
conference center.
10 Intensive Care Unit: Provided funding to
support our critically ill patients through
upgrading technology and facilities.

11 Friends of Nursing: Billings Clinic staff received numerous
scholarships for continuing education.
12 Women’s Wellness: Provided over 1,200 free mammograms, pap
smears, and blood panels for uninsured and underinsured women.
13 Neuroscience Patient Education Center: Established a learning
center for patients to gain a better understanding of neurological
diseases.
14 Cancer Center: Our Capital Campaign raised $10.3 million to help
construct our new state-of-the-art, comprehensive Cancer Center.
15 Cancer Research: Gave much needed assistance to enable
cancer patients to participate in research trials.
Significant dollars were either raised or spent to support each of the projects or programs listed on this map.
Patients are at the center
of our cancer efforts and nowhere
is that more evident than with our Patient
Care Navigation Program. This innovative,
complementary program connects cancer patients with
a registered nurse who has expertise in their type of cancer.
The nurse navigator ensures seamless care between physicians
and cancer treatments while offering education, support and
guidance to patients and families as they cope with the many challenges
of a cancer diagnosis.

The Billings Clinic Cancer Center Campaign
The dreams, hard work and generosity of so many were realized August 10, 2009 as the doors to Billings Clinic’s new
50,000 square foot comprehensive cancer center opened to patients for the first time. From the superior technology of
the linear accelerators used for radiation therapy to the beautiful, sunny Nance Infusion Center, our new cancer center has
created a strong foundation for our emerging world-class cancer program. A crucial component of our cancer vision,
which is to be the premier destination cancer center for the Northern Rocky Mountain region, is cancer research. Our new
center incorporates space to further develop our research efforts, giving patients greater access to the very latest
treatments. It is with an overwhelming sense of gratitude to you, our wonderful donors, that we thank you for making
this possible.
The Billings Clinic Cancer Center Campaign raised $10.3 million dollars for this worthy program which has truly raised the
level of cancer care for our vast region. Please know that every dollar you gave, and may still be giving through your
generous pledges, will touch the lives of cancer patients and their families for decades to come.

Ushering in a New Era of Radiation Therapy
The generosity

new and
innovative
therapies for
cancer patients
requiring
radiation
therapy
possible. Today,
patients have
the ability to
receive such
Radiation Oncologist Dr. John Schallenkamp visits
advanced
with a patient in one of the radiation oncology
radiation
treatment rooms. The Varian Trilogy™ linear
accelerator pictured here is one of the most advanced
treatments as
accelerators available. “We are pleased to offer the
stereotatic
latest advancements in radiation oncology and
radiosurgery
access to important clinical trials for radiation
and high dose
therapy,” states Dr. Schallenkamp.

Stereotatic radiosurgery allows our radiation oncologists to treat
patients’ cancerous tumors with unprecedented precision in areas
of the body that are difficult for surgeons to reach with traditional
methods. HDR brachytherapy offers patients greatly reduced
length of treatment options while minimizing radiation exposure
to healthy tissue. This is a wonderful alternative for patients who
must travel long distances for daily treatments lasting up to
six weeks.

Investing in Billings Clinic’s Bright Future
It was Christmas Eve 1968, and Americans were transfixed to their television sets. Families gathered to watch history in
the making as the intrepid crew of Apollo 8 conducted a televised broadcast from space. This brave and pioneering team
of three astronauts were the first people to ever leave the gravitational influence of the Earth and orbit another celestial
body, the Moon. Their dangerous mission blazed new trails for our nation’s space program. The members of this
momentous team returned to Earth as true American heroes and were named Time magazine’s Men of the Year.
Mission Commander Frank F. Borman ended the Christmas Eve broadcast with these words “and from the crew of
Apollo 8, we close with goodnight, good luck, a Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you – all of you on the good Earth.”

Esther Ruckman, of Worland, Wyoming, sadly lost her
battle with breast cancer at the age of 53. For each of her
cancer treatments, Esther, with her husband Tom or one
of her friends, would travel 250 miles roundtrip to
Billings Clinic. The financial strain was immense as gas,
lodging and meal costs quickly added up.
“We were very fortunate
that our relatives and
church helped us by buying
gas cards,” said Tom.
“Esther was exhausted after
chemotherapy treatments and
the last thing she wanted to do was
travel in the car for two and a half hours
back home.”
After Esther passed away, Tom set up the
‘Esther Bauer Ruckman Ever Loving Fund,’ an endowment
that assists with travel expenses for Billings Clinic cancer
patients who live in Hot Springs or Washakie Counties in
Wyoming. “Hopefully this fund will help others in the
same way that we were helped,” said Tom.
The community of Worland has embraced Esther’s
endowment to help ease some of the financial burden
facing their friends and neighbors with cancer. From
Gorgeous Gals to the girl’s high school basketball team,
many individuals and community groups have raised
funds for Esther’s Ever Loving Endowment.
A Legacy of Giving
Billings Clinic Foundation gratefully acknowledges this

and significant philanthropic investment in Billings Clinic
over the years. These donors, through their thoughtful and

The Neurosciences Endowment was established as a tribute to Norm’s sister,
Marilyn, who struggled with Alzheimer’s disease. Through their generosity, the
Sulenes’ hoped to fund “solace for Marilyn, themselves and for all of the region’s
Alzheimer’s victims and those who love them.”
After establishing the endowment, Norm experienced again the devastation of
Alzheimer’s disease as his beloved wife Mary Lou succumbed to this unrelenting
disease. Norm’s commitment to our community, and especially to the health of
our community, has created a lasting legacy that will improve the lives of so many
for generations to come.

Your gifts allow us to accomplish great things for the benefit of our community and the patients we serve. As a not-forprofit health care organization, our physicians and hospital provide care for patients regardless of their economic or
insurance status. In fiscal year 2009, Billings Clinic provided over $14.5 million in charity care, more than twice the amount

The Dream of a Pediatric Diabetes Center Comes True
A lifetime dream of Dr. Fred Gunville was realized in the fall of 2009
with the opening of the Pediatric Diabetes Clinic at Billings Clinic. A
dream that was years in the making was made possible thanks to
the generous philanthropic support of the Gunville Family, the
Metz Family and a grant made available through the efforts of
Senator Baucus and the entire Montana Congressional Delegation.
The pediatric clinic includes a private waiting area, nine exam
rooms, a teaching kitchen and space for ongoing children diabetes
research efforts.

central area,
including our
pediatric diabetes
nurse educator and
dietician.

Today the cardiac team at Billings Clinic has grown to include nine
cardiologists and three cardiovascular surgeons. Their work has
been supported through the years by transformational gifts from
the Welch and Fortin families, as well as an anonymous estate gift
of $2.5 million, which established a cardiac services endowment.
Over the last two years, the acquisition of equipment for advanced
screening and treatment of cardiology patients has been made
possible through the Cardiac Services Endowment.

Through One Woman’s Hard Work and Dedication
Alice Stene has a very special place in her heart for children,
especially those fighting cancer. Alice felt compelled to do
something to help ease the many challenges these children and
their families face.
For five years, Alice, with the help of her loving husband Andy, has
spearheaded fundraising efforts including an annual dinner and
auction, countless bake sales and raffles, all in support of Billings
Clinic Foundation’s Kelker’s Kids Fund. This fund provides much
needed financial assistance to pediatric cancer patients and their
families for such things as travel assistance and summer cancer
camp expenses. Through Alice’s amazing efforts, over $45,000 has
been given to Kelker’s Kids.

In Memory of a Beloved Child
The Erral Grayson Nichols Memorial Fund was established in 2007
by Eric & Crystal Nichols, in memory of their son. Gifts in Erral’s
memory support child-focused projects and the Department of
Maternal Fetal Medicine at Billings Clinic. The fund helped establish
grief libraries available in the Family Birth Center and Billings Clinic’s
Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and has provided children’s
books and play tables in waiting areas.
“Out of sadness came opportunity to provide for others in our son’s
memory – the generosity of our friends and family has allowed us to
establish this fund. For us, it keeps Erral close in our hearts.” – Eric &

In the waiting room of the Pre-Surgery Center, two boys are actively
engaged in the children’s play area – one of several projects funded by the
Erral Grayson Nichols Memorial Fund.
