Who can resist all that “magic?” This summer marks The Painted Turtle’s sixth summer and while I might be a little biased I think the camp just gets better and better every year. We are no longer a brand-new camp defining itself on a week-to-week basis, but a camp filled with tradition and memory, with a family of campers, staff, and volunteers who know that time spent at The Painted Turtle is an experience that has the power to change lives. Time and again these past years we’ve seen children arrive at camp shy, unsure, and exhausted by their illness only to emerge at the end of a week barely recognizable to their parents: brave, hopeful, and filled with a new vision of themselves and their lives. The wonderful thing about camp magic is that it only grows stronger and more plentiful as time passes. Whether through new programs added or a deeper commitment to our mission, The Painted Turtle touches a greater number of lives every year. Through our intentional program we continue to encourage children to challenge themselves, to make friends and build community, to gain independence, to make decisions, and to believe in themselves and in all the possibility that lies ahead in their lives. Camp magic is hard to define. It’s gentle, it’s goofy, it’s sweet, it’s strong, and it comes from the heart. Best of all it’s free for everyone who needs it. The real magic of camp is that it changes lives. And it’s a magic that lasts a lifetime. ~Blake Maher Executive Camp Director The Wizard # e & Once there was a wizard Who went to the Ocean r Gotta do some surfin’ Some surfing...some surfin’ biblay… e some surfin’ biblay… Some surfin’ biblay, biblay, biblay Once there was a wizard r Who went to the Painted Turtle e Gotta live the magic The magic…The magic biblay… The magic biblay… The magic biblay, biblay, biblay r An innovative camp and family care center for children with life-threatening illnesses. At seven months old, she was diagnosed with severe cerebral palsy and it was confirmed that she has multiple epiphyseal dysplasia, a rare form of dwarfism. Because of the brain damage that affected up to 75% of her brain, she is farsighted, has had seizures, has intermittent incontinence, has heat sensitivity which causes her to go into heat stroke quickly, plus other diagnoses. She’s not able to sit, stand, walk, roll, crawl or self-toilet. However, she is an amazingly happy, outgoing, loving and affectionate little girl who has a passion for life, her friends, family, and animals. Through the skeletal dysplasia clinic at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, we found out about The Painted Turtle, applied and Shelby was accepted to attend in August of 2008. Upon arrival, she was immediately greeted by energetic camp counselors and felt comfortable right away. By the time we were finished with the check-in process she couldn’t wait to start her camp adventure. When I picked her up on the last day of camp, I soon discovered I had a changed little girl. This new Shelby was happier than she’s ever been, more self-assured, more confident, and she couldn’t stop smiling or introducing me to everybody. Once she realized we had to leave, she cried harder than she ever had in the past – she was devastated to part with the experience of a lifetime. Since then, we have been pen pals with one of her camp counselors, and she was thrilled to be able to attend the skeletal dysplasia family weekend. Shelby was also honored to be invited to San Francisco to take part in the incredible World of Nick Adams event where once again, she was welcomed with love and acceptance. The Painted Turtle is the most fantastic and inspirational camp I have ever seen. It’s the most fun a child could possibly have with so many creative activities, songs, dances and daily events, that trying to describe it just doesn’t do The Painted Turtle justice. -Jen, mother of Shelby, Sacramento County, CA A Letter From Our New Nursing Director From the time I was in high school, I dreamt about finding a position in which I could make a difference in the lives of children. It was that dream that lead me to pursue a degree in nursing. While completing my pediatric rotation, I had the amazing experience of caring for a 13 year old girl who had just received a liver transplant. She and her mom welcomed me into their lives at a time when they were most vulnerable. Through this experience, I found my mission in life – to provide quality care for underprivileged and/or chronically ill children. Upon graduating nursing school, I volunteered as a Nurse Case Manager at a battered women’s shelter before taking a position as a Pediatric Nurse at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. In 1999, I moved to California to work as a School Nurse/Health Education Specialist for the Claremont Unified School District. However, I quickly found myself “missing” caring for children with chronic illness, so I began working weekends on the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. In 2001, I returned to school to obtain my Master’s Degree as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP). After completing my degree, I worked as a PNP and Supervisor for a School Health Care Program in Arizona. From there, I moved to Washington State to help establish a new pediatric clinic before coming to The Painted Turtle in June 2008. The decision to leave clinical practice and take on a more administrative role was a challenging one, but I feel blessed to have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of so many deserving children and their families. Each day I work here, the laughter, smiles, and joy of the children and families we serve touches my heart in an unexplainable way. Since assuming my role as Nursing Director, The Painted Turtle has had some amazing firsts, including: a Young Adult Leadership Weekend for 16-18 year olds with Crohn’s and Colitis, our first group of campers with limb loss/ abnormalities and severe burns during Shriners Hospital for Children Family Weekend, and this summer, our first Spina Bifida mini-session and Rheumatic Diseases week. Additionally, our medical program has grown to the point that we are able to serve children with more intensivecare needs, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, parenteral nutrition (TPN), tube-feeding, urinary catheterization, tracheostomy tubes, home ventilators, and central venous catheters. I am excited to work with our amazing campers, staff and volunteers as we embark on The Painted Turtle’s 6th summer season. ~Sheri Carson, MSN, RN, CPNP Medical Volunteer Profile: Dr. Jorge Vargas If you ever find yourself at camp, you will probably hear a very heartwarming camp story about medical volunteer Dr. Jorge Vargas and his family. And when you do, you’ll feel like you know him and his family already. Like so many of our volunteers, Dr. Vargas dedicates many volunteer hours at camp and always seems to find time during his busy schedule to be part of the magic of camp. At a very early time, Dr. Vargas heard the news of The Painted Turtle and the proposed site during a UCLA presentation. He kept an eye on camp’s progress and stayed informed through the Department of Pediatrics at UCLA. Out of it all, Dr. Vargas says, “it was the idea…the idea of the camp was so incredible and I couldn’t help but get involved.” “For the longest time, there used to only be one camp that cared for kids with medical conditions and that was for kids with cancer. But with the establishment of The Painted Turtle, it has made such a difference for kids with other conditions. In the field of psychoneuroimmunology (PNI), the camp experience is one of the most powerful and therapeutic experiences available for children with chronic illnesses,” Dr. Vargas shares. So in 2005, Dr. Vargas attended his first session as a medical volunteer during the Crohn’s and Colitis Spring Family Weekend and has been to camp every year thereafter with his growing family. Dr. Vargas, his wife Heather, who also helps with The Painted Turtle Hospital Outreach Program, and their five children, love the camp experience. Dr. Vargas has observed that the hospital or clinic is the first chance many of these kids get to interact with their peers with the same problems; however the visits are brief and they really don’t get to know each other. But at camp, they find that there are others just like them, and even after a few hours at camp, we see them change, become more outgoing, and smiles are on their faces. As a care provider with a large practice at UCLA, Dr. Vargas has a sizable number of patients who are eligible to go to The Painted Turtle. He has become a valuable referral source for many of these children who find their way up to camp. Dr. Vargas expresses, “While at camp, I also become a familiar face for them which I think can be comforting. It is wonderful to see them at camp and forget about all of their medical concerns.” During one session, Dr. Vargas recalls a child with a combined liver/small bowel/pancreas (multivisceral) transplant who had many complications that came about due to the complexity of his procedures, but also due to his lack of compliance post transplant. “I thought it was going to be a very difficult week for the boy. He actually had no problems during his time at camp and he was not without a smile the entire time. After camp, physically and mentally, this change persisted, and he was somehow able to maintain more stability of his health after that camp experience.” Volunteers like Dr. Jorge Vargas keep the spirit of The Painted Turtle alive. During 2008, we had 1,433 generous volunteers who gave their time during a work day at camp, a family weekend, a summer session or the hospital outreach program. In 2009, Dr. Vargas will be volunteering at The Painted Turtle for five separate sessions. This is a remarkable gift and The Painted Turtle is truly grateful. r silly "O basketball! e "! mm s f ishin u s n g! a ! s g n me n! o s fu sions music Su m mer Ses ! swimming! ropes course! cam p f ir e! ! e Liver Transplant: June 13-18 zip lin Kidney Disease & Transplant: June 21-27 Spina Bifida: June 30 – July 2 ! ! It is this atmosphere that invites volunteers to return session after session, staff members to return year after year, and makes campers never want to leave! It is sometimes hard to believe that the world outside camp is not as vibrant, joyful, and exciting. Camp is exactly what everyone needs – an oasis from the everyday. Of course, a lot of hard work goes into making each camp session a success. Staff members and volunteers work around the clock to ensure that each camper has an extraordinary experience. It is so rewarding to see these children leave camp with a renewed sense of optimism about the future. The following quote from a camper during last year’s Liver Transplant & Arthritis Summer Session exemplifies The Painted Turtle’s mission and is the driving force behind everything that we do. “The one thing I hope other people at camp learned about me was that even if there is something wrong with you, you can still have fun and go to camp.” For children who battle serious illnesses, life is often filled with complex and long-term treatment regimes, periodic hospitalizations, and invasive medical procedures. While Painted Turtle campers face many challenges, so do their families. Their families are constantly confronted with the physical, emotional, and financial stresses of caring for a seriously ill child. It is important that we continue to provide life-changing experiences for campers and their families. The Painted Turtle is more than a camp. It is a place where new friendships are forged, worries can be forgotten, and kids can be kids. The Painted Turtle will continue to be a yearround refuge for children with serious medical conditions. ~Michael L. House, PhD, CEO Campership! For seriously ill children, The Painted Turtle is a haven where they can go fishing, canoeing, horseback-riding, and more. Yet the most powerful gift camp offers is the simple but profound understanding that they are not alone with their illness. Thanks to your contributions, more than 10,000 campers have found courage and strength since we opened in 2004. Camperships change lives.
