TREE PLANTING
MERRIWA
Volunteer recruitment
The Stepping Stones project is an initiative of the Great
Eastern Ranges to strengthen habitat connectivity across
the Hunter Valley.
Help Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) assist
local farmers in planting over 30,000 trees to reconnect
isolated patches of bushland to create wildlife corridors.
This will increase ecosystem resilience to climate change
and development threats by strengthening the connections
between key habitat patches.
The project commences:
4 April and goes to 13 May 2016.
For further information please contact 0249612358
or

We welcome you to join us at worship as we remember and celebrate the
events surrounding the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus and what
this means for us and for the world today.

The staff at Merriwa Central School and the Merriwa Ringer wish everyone a Happy
and Safe Easter. The Merriwa Ringer will be back on Tuesday March 29. All articles
need to be received by 9.00am on the Tuesday morning. Publication will be Thursday

Principal’s Report
Last week students had a fabulous opportunity
to explore the savannah grasslands of Western
Plains Zoo and the exotic animals on display. The
excursion was organised for business studies, and
visual art students, however some very lucky Year
5/6 students were able to fill some spare seats on
the bus. Thank you to Miss Roe for organising the
excursion which was such a wonderful opportunity
for our students.
restore the natural habitat of the Regent Honey
eater along the disused railway line between
Gungal and Sandy Hollow.
WHO SAID “MONEY DOESN’T MATTER”?
In recent weeks additional Gonski funding has
been used to reduce the travel cost of excursions
for students, to Western Plains Zoo and the Drip.
In the last week of term Gonski funding will be
used to subsidise the cost of the “World of Maths”
workshop for primary and secondary students. The
workshops are designed to be fun, and hands-on
activities to engage students in mathematical
problem solving.

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Education is a partnership between students,
teachers and parents. Parent teacher interviews
are a great opportunity for parents and teachers
to discuss the relative strengths, and areas for
development for students. Interviews will be held
on the last Monday of term April 4. Please contact
the office to make your appointment. Should you
require more than the allocated times on the
evening, parents are able to request an alternate
appointment with the teacher to discuss student
progress. Information has been sent home this
week with details of parent teacher interviews.
STUDENT MEDICAL DETAILS
Students experience a range of health conditions
as they pass through school. Some ailments are
temporary and minor; others are ongoing and
more serious. It is important that parents advise
the school of any medical condition which may
require supervision, or assistance of teaching staff.
In some circumstances the school requires a
health care plan endorsed by the family doctor so
that we can provide the level of care required for
a student. Standard proformas exist for students
with allergies, asthma and anaphylaxis. In some
circumstances students are required to carry their
medication with them at all times.
Please contact your child’s teacher, or year
adviser to update medical details.
REGENT HONEYEATER PROJECT
Students enjoyed a range of hands on workshops
today as part of our Regent Honeyeater project.
Students discussed native plants and animals,
mans impact on them, habitat, and threatened
species. The highlight of the day was a visit of
some special guest from Taronga Zoo in the
“Zoomobile”. Thursday next week students will
take to the field in a tree planting exercise, to

YEAR ONE REPORT
Year 1 has been working extremely hard this term.
We have been enjoying studying ‘Mixtures’ in our
Science unit, where we have been investigating
substances that mix well together, and ones
that do not. We have also discovered that some
substances can be separated with the use
of sieves and colanders. We will continue our
investigations in the coming weeks.
It has been exciting to have Miss Hopkins join us
for Creative Arts this term. The students have been
producing some wonderful pieces of art! We have
focused on many aspects, such as warm and cool
colours, Easter themes, and replicating paintings
from famous artists. The students have been using
crayons, pencils and watercolour paint to create
their masterpieces. Our classroom is beginning to
look like an art gallery!
The fun and hard work will continue in Year 1
during the last few weeks of term.

EASTER AND HARMONY DAY ASSEMBLY
UNIFORM DRAW
Ava Johnston and Paige Carrall, both from the
Year 1 class, were the two students selected in our
uniform draw last Friday. The girls were wearing
their full school uniform and were very excited to
receive their prizes. They said their families would
be very proud of them, as are we at Merriwa
Central School. Congratulations Ava and Paige!
Don’t forget that our next Primary assembly will
now be held at 2.00pm Friday April 1. This is a recent
change to our planned assembly due to Taronga
Zoo coming to visit us with a full day of wonderful
activities. Next Friday, the six Primary classes will
be presenting Easter and Harmony Day themed
items and all parents and community members
are invited to celebrate with us.
WELCOME MRS ROKOBARO
Last Monday, the staff
and students welcomed
our new teacher Mrs
Merridy Rokobaro. Mrs
Rokabaro joins us to
teach the Year 4/5 class
whilst Mrs Moore is on
maternity leave. She
has travelled all the way
from her home in South
Australia, however Mrs
Rokabaro is familiar with
the local area as she
taught at Scone Public School for a period of
time last year. Mrs Rokabaro has a flair for art and
photography and we are looking forward to her
sharing her talents with Merriwa Central School.
Mrs Rokabaro is eager to meet parents and
caregivers and is hoping to see many of them at
our upcoming parent-teacher interviews.

ALL THINGS ENGLISH
Shakespeare wrote, “It is not in the stars to hold
our destiny, but in ourselves.” Year 8 have been
engaged in novel studies and narrative writing,
and the assessment results reflect how much they
have taken responsibility for applying learning. I
would like to congratulate Liana Byfield for her
outstanding effort, earning 32 marks out of a
possible 35 for her narrative assessment, a real
indicator of her using the skills practised in class.
Year 8 has recently commenced a poetry unit.
Be prepared to help them in the ‘Guess What’
exercise! These are brief poems of three similes,
and the students have to work out what the similes
are describing. They also have to create one of
their own. Here’s one to get you thinking:
?
Dark like burnt sugar
Small like a crumb
Strong as a bulldozer.
Year 9/10 English and Year 11 Standard English
have been working on conceptual studies,
which involves looking at how meaning is made
in texts, and how that reflects the purpose of the
texts. They have been working on being able
to construct their evaluations of the concept in
logically organised paragraphs and sustained
responses. They have to do a presentation on
these concepts using the skills practised in class
for their assessment task, and I would advise the
students to take very careful note of the meaning
in the quote from Shakespeare that commenced
this report.
I’ve nearly finished my tenure as a temporary
teacher at Merriwa Central School, and have
found it to be an interesting and rewarding
experience. I would like to thank staff and students
who have made me feel welcomed during my
stay.

TARONGA WESTERN PLAINS ZOO EXCURSION
On Friday March 18, Year 5/6, 8, Year 9/10
Photography and Year 11/12 Business Studies
students took a trip to Taronga Western Plains
Zoo. This day provided students a variety of
opportunities to discover life in a zoo to support
their studies in various subjects. Despite the rain
on our arrival, the day cleared up for all to enjoy
the zoo adventure.
Year 11/12 Business Studies students participated
in the ‘It’s Zoo Business’ workshop for the day
where they had the opportunity to see how zoo
operates as a business. The students received a
‘behind the scenes’ guided tour of the business
operations including the accommodation
options, function centre and the retail and food
outlet. They also learnt about the marketing
and tourism aspects of the zoo. The students
particularly enjoyed exploring the luxury African
style Zoofari Lodge accommodation which was
set in the savannah surrounds featuring giraffe
as well as the new meerkat viewing display. The
day allowed students to gather information to
formulate a case study to use in class and in their
assessment tasks.
Year 8 Geography students along with Year 9/10
photography students and Mrs Jones with Year
5/6 students enjoyed a self-guided tour of the

YEAR ADVISORS COMMENT:
Tara’s enthusiasm for her class work
and resilience never ceases to amaze me. She has displayed her
developing leadership and team work skills well this term by helping
organise and implement the Girls Night In to raise money for women’s
breast cancer, as a Year 10 SRC representative. She has been
participating in the 4C Girls Leadership program for sport this term and
has helped numerous younger girls find their feet within the program
which is pleasing to report. Congratulations Tarah, keep up the good
work!

been
voted
Student
of
the Week by staff
and students for a
number of reasons.
She has been working
hard to improve her
writing and last week
she wrote a number
of quality sentences
using verbs as the
focus. Brooke also
enjoys art activities and draws detailed pictures
taking time to perfect her work. In the playground,
Brooke has been learning a new sport with friends
and displayed great sportsmanship and respect
to others throughout the games. Some reasons her
peers voted Brooke student of the week include;
“Brooke, because she has been trying to do her
best”
“Brooke for being nice in the playground”
Congratulations and keep up the wonderful work,
Brooke!
A MESSAGE FROM MISS H
Thank you to those who attended and took
on roles at the P and C meeting and AGM on
Monday. We greatly appreciate your continued
support.
At the AGM last year’s committee was reinstated
with Stacey Anderson continuing as President,

BULLYING. NO WAY!
Dear Parents
At our school we aim to create a safe and
supportive school community for everyone.
Sometimes, it can be difficult for parents or carers
to know what to do when their child talks to them
about bullying. You are an important part of our
work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively
if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone.

YOU CAN DO IT – CONFIDENCE
This term, all classes have been focusing on being
organised. This skill is much more than merely
being ready to start the day.
Across the classes, we have covered many topics
including:
• Arriving at school on time and hanging bags
up
• Returning lunchboxes, drink bottles and hats
to our bags at the end of play
• Handing in notes and money on time
• Bringing all the necessary equipment to school
• Having everything on your desk ready to start
the day
• Organising fruit break
• Hanging out the flags
• Returning sports equipment at the end of
recess and lunch
• Handing in completed work
• Completing work in a timely manner
• Having a learning goal to work towards
• Using a calendar to organise myself
• Using a checklist to organise myself.
Each week, we have been rewarding students
who are trying hard to develop their organisation
skills with a class award.
HOW CAN PARENTS HELP AT HOME?
• Set aside a set time for homework
• Ask child to put their homework straight back
into their bags when completed
• Give them the responsibility of packing their
bags or finding their hats etc
• Store notes in a safe place for easy retrieval
• Remind your child to pack their library bag on
library day.
Bascially its about making your child responsible
for themselves. If you would like further ideas, join
the You Can Do It Parents Facebook page. It is
packed with tips and handy information.
PARENT ONLINE PAYMENTS
Parents are now able to make payments to the
school online. On our webpage there is an icon
on the toolbar $ Make a Payment, and follow the
prompts.
Merriwa Ringer
This process will give families a more convenient
option for making future payments.

The Premiers Reading Challenge opened on
March 7. Any child from Kindergarten to Year 6
can register. Go to https://online.det.nsw.edu.
au/prc/home.html for further details. The website
will give you information regarding rules, suitable
reading lists and tips for keeping on track. You can
also download a reading log. If you do not have
access to the Internet, please speak to Mrs Parker
and she will organise to download the information
you need. All children who achieve the challenge
will receive a certificate at the end of the year.
It is not difficult to complete the challenge. Students
in Kindgarten-Year 2 need to have 30 books read
to them, while Years 3-5 need to read 20 books
that are appropriate to their reading ability. The
challenge closes in August. So get reading!
TARONGA ZOO VIDEO CONFERENCE
Last Thursday, Years 3-5 participated in a video
conference with some if the keepers from Taronga
Zoo in preparation for their Zoomobile Visit this

As we prepare for the Holy time of Easter the
Infants class have been studying the season of
Lent and Easter. Our students have demonstrated
a high level of understanding through a range of
hands on learning experiences. Students have
identified the importance of symbols in our faith
and what they symbolise. They have linked these
symbols with the events of Holy Week.
In English Early Stage One has been learning
about Story. Students have learnt to identify the
beginning, middle and end of stories and retell
these stories both orally and through the use of
pictures and words. Students have also been given
the opportunity to discuss how likes and dislikes
will lead children to form an opinion of stories. We
have read many stories which we have enjoyed –
one of our favourites is Hairy Charlie and the Frog
by Jackie French – we find it very funny when Hairy
Charlie gets scared by the frog! Stage One has
been learning about Appreciation using a range
of types of texts. Students are currently studying
Poetry. Last week students worked collaboratively
to create Easter poems.

Our Mathematical skills have been building
as the term progresses. We have explored the
substrands of Length, Time and Multiplication and
Division. Students have engaged in many hands
on learning sequences measuring the lengths
of many different objects using informal units of
measurement, such as the classroom lengths using
our height as informal unit of measurement. In
Time, we have learnt about the days of the week,
months of the year and have been concentrating
on telling the time. In Multiplication and Division
students have demonstrated the concept of
multiplying and dividing using concrete materials.

these artefacts with our class! This opportunity has
inspired students to engage fully in all historical
aspects. Currently we are enjoying looking
at how the perspective of an artefact would
impact on how we use the artefact to develop
understanding of history.
We have been ‘Getting Along’ with our Mates in
PDHPE. Students have linked qualities of friendship
and cooperation in many aspects and have
enjoyed working collaboratively to demonstrate
these skills in all aspects of schooling!
Our Creative Art units have been action packed!
Our Visual Art activities have been based around
Fireworks. Students have enjoyed learning about
line, shape and colour. In Music our awareness
of texture in music is allowing us to appreciate
different styles of music. Our students are ready
to go next term when our focus will turn to Drama
and Dance in preparation for our School Play in
Term 3. We have already had a Drama workshop
with Anna Kerrigan, Creative Director of ASPIRE
run by the Catholic Schools Office – we look
forward to demonstrating our drama skills!

Saint Paul makes this clear when he reminds us
that our faith is in vain without Christ’s resurrection
from the dead (1 Corinthians 15:14).
If you have never experienced all of the Holy Week
liturgies, could I encourage you to participate as
fully as you are able - the liturgy, in a sense, places
us in the midst of these events, and is able to give
us a new understanding of them. We then begin
to look forward to the feast of Pentecost, and the
birth of the church with the reception of the Spirit.
May God bless us as we enter this most Holy Week.
I hope to see you at worship.

SYDNEY LEGACY ROSEMARY COLLECTION
THE GIFT OF EASTER THE SEASON OF HOPE
The shedule for us this year is:
This Easter story, in all its drama and passion, is
written for us by Fr Glen.
ANZAC Day falls on Monday, our IGA truck pick
up will be on Wednesday April 20 for delivery to
Legacy the following day.
As you read this note, we will be close to the
events of Holy Week that liturgically lead us to the
cross and beyond to the resurrection of Our Lord,
Jesus Christ. This week begins on Palm Sunday
and concludes with Easter Day. For many, this
week is hard going- we face the brutality of the
cross and place ourselves in the context of these
events. These events are confronting, because
we recognise that as disciples, we are like those
who cried “Hosanna”, welcoming the Lord in to
Jerusalem, only to cry “Crucify him”, just a few
days later.
The most important part of this week is the Triduum,
which means “three great days”. These days are
Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Day.
These are the days that conclude the incarnate
Lord’s life, but also establish the New Covenant in
the resurrection from the dead, of which we are
members, by baptism and faith.
On Maundy Thursday we remember that Jesus
shared the final meal with his disciples, called the
Last Supper, on the night before he was crucified.
On Good Friday we commemorate the day of
Jesus crucifixion and death. For Christians, Good
Friday commemorates not just a historical event,
but is the day we remember the sacrificial death
of Christ, which with the resurrection, comprises
the heart of the Christian faith.
On Easter Day we celebrate Jesus resurrection
from the dead. Every gospel provides an account
of the resurrection, which makes perfect sense,
because the bodily resurrection of Jesus is and
has been the cornerstone of the Christian faith.

from Friday April 15 for you to bring your harvest in.
We will be trying a new mechanical harvest this
year as suggested by Vivian and Paul Murray.
If you need a hand with collection or delivery
please advise us on 0407 001 583 or 6548 2157.
The ideal sprig length for Legacy is a single spike
up to 300mm (one foot) long but we are happy to
take all you can give.
Last year Merriwa’s contribution was about 90%
of Legacy’s rosemary. They turned that into
more than $80,000.00 with the hard work of all
concerned; the volunteers on the streets and
sports events, the volunteers making up the sprigs
at head office and our community’s efforts.
Let’s help them beat that achievement. Legacy
is a great Australian self help institution that does
not get government support.
We need helpers. Please contact us if you can
spare 2-3 hours to help during the Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday.

DEPRESSION
March 14-20 was Brain Awareness Week – the
global campaign to increase public awareness
of brain research. One very common disorder
that has its origins in the brain is depression. In any
one year, about one million people in Australia
experience depression. Up to one in five women
and one in eight men will experience depression
at some time in their lives. Depression is much
worse than feeling sad or ‘low’ for a while after
an unhappy or stressful event. It is a serious illness
that changes the way a person thinks, feels and
behaves.
Depression is thought to be at least partly caused
by chemical changes in the brain. A number of
factors may contribute to its development. These
include emotional stress (e.g. loss of a loved one,
relationship problems, unemployment), hormonal
changes (eg after childbirth, menopause),
alcohol and drug abuse, certain medicines and
medical conditions (eg cancer, diabetes, stroke,
chronic pain), other mental illnesses (eg anxiety,
dementia, schizophrenia), personal factors (e.g.
loneliness), certain personality traits (eg negative
thinking patterns, low self-esteem), and a family
history of depression.
Symptoms of depression can include sadness,
moodiness, loss of interest or pleasure in activities,
changes in weight or appetite, difficulty sleeping
or sleeping too much, lack of energy, difficulty
thinking, concentrating and making decisions,
feelings of worthlessness, headaches, body aches
and pains, and thoughts of suicide. If you have
had any of these symptoms for more than two
weeks, talk to your doctor. If you are a parent,
look out for these symptoms in your teenagers.
Depression is often not recognised and can go on
for months or even years if not treated. Untreated
depression can have many negative effects
on a person’s life, including serious relationship
problems, difficulty finding and keeping a job,
and drug and alcohol problems. Depression is
one of the most treatable of mental disorders.
Merriwa Ringer
Most people with depression eventually respond
well to treatment. It is important to seek support
as early as possible – the sooner a person gets
treatment, the sooner they can recover.
There are several different types of treatment
for depression. Often, more than one form
of treatment is needed. The most commonly
used treatments are psychotherapy (such as
counselling or cognitive behavioural therapy)
and antidepressant medicines, or a combination
of the two. Psychotherapy can help you change
unhelpful patterns of thinking and acting.
Antidepressant medicines can correct chemical
changes in the brain. There are many different
types of antidepressants, and you may need to
try several before finding one that suits you.
There are also a number of things you can
do yourself to help reduce the symptoms of
depression. Regular exercise can create positive
feeling and improve mood. Getting enough sleep
on a regular basis, eating a healthy diet and
avoiding alcohol can also be helpful. Learning
and using relaxation techniques can help relax
your body and mind. Let family and friends
know how you are feeling. Although they may
not fully understand what you’re going through,
they may be able to give you extra support.
Always check with a doctor or pharmacist before
using complementary medicines or alternative
therapies to treat depression.
There are many organisations that provide help
and support for people with depression, and
for their families and friends. Ask your doctor or
pharmacist for advice.
For more information, you can get a Self Care
Fact Card on Depression from Merriwa Pharmacy.

FOR SALE
ROYALLY FOR ROYALS
After a year of research for presenting the best
of India, Spice Grill - Merriwa proudly introduces
the best and the ultra delicious Kathi Roll from the
Royal Cuisine of India.
HISTORY OF KATHI ROLL
Kati roll is A Royal food originating from Kolkatta
Former Capital of India. Its original form was a
Kati Kabab enclosed in a paratha, The Kati Roll
is said to have started its life from a Mughal’s
Era Restaurant in Kolkata, a very popular eatery
founded in 1832 that sold kebabs and parathas
and other Mughlai food in the heart of Kolkata.
There are many stories about how exactly the roll
got started. Some centre around harried office
commuters who wanted something quick and
portable, some mention British Babus (English
Officers) who were too fastidious to touch the
kabab. The most likely origin is probably more
mundane, but in any case someone decided to
roll things up at some point.
WHAT IS A KATHI ROLL?
Traditionally, a Kati Roll is a Kati Kabab wrapped in
a layered paratha. The paratha is typically dough
that is kneaded into a rope, then coiled into a
round patty. This is then flattened with a rolling
pin and partly fried in oil on a tawa. These semicooked parathas are then kept aside till needed,
at which time they’re put back on the tawa and
cooked through. If an egg is to be added, it is
usually cracked into the tawa and the paratha
put on top of the egg; they both cook together
and the paratha gets coated on one side with
the egg.
Kati Kababs are chicken or mutton chunks
marinated in Aromatic Spices and cooked either
on skewers (the “kati”) over coals in a sigri or on
a Tawa(Grill). When the roll is being prepared,
these are taken off the skewers and tossed with
onions, Garlic, sauces and Herbs in the tawa
(Grill). In today’s busy scheduled life, this is the
most desirable food with outstanding flavor.
The Rolls we are Introducing are:
1. Chicken Kathi Roll
2. Lamb Kathi Roll

MERRIWA MEN’S GOLF NEWS
“Scintillating and aggressive” were words used
by Patrick Williams to describe his game on his
way to taking out his own Williams Concrete Par
competition on Saturday.
Merriwa Golf Course was at its finest and there
were no excuses on Saturday, but scores were
not indicative of the excellent conditions for golf.
Williams sent a loud message to matchplay
opponent Max McNaught bucking the trend of
high scores firing a plus two to win by two shots
over the inconsistent Mark Morris.
Morris found a bit of form to be plus four at one
stage, but he could not sustain this and dwindled
on the back nine to finish square and take out the
runner up prize.
The benchmark was set at minus six in the ball
competition with Andrew Medway, Paul Murray,
Andrew Carrigan and David Taylor taking home
balls.
The first annual Easter Stableford is set down for
this Saturday. Come along at 12.00noon and
have a hit, it’s the best thing to do in Merriwa on a
Saturday afternoon. If you’re lucky you may even
see a FIST, but apparently this won’t happen if you
keep your head down and spank it.
Mark Morris
WOMEN’S BOWLS

NETBALL - Our girls have been to grading days in
Scone. All should be registered and in a team.
If your daughter still wants to play netball and
hasn’t registered yet please call Elaine or Kellie
Porter. Good luck with the season girls. All info
will be in the Ringer or our Club Facebook page
or Kellie will email you. Kellie will also be getting
sizes for club team shirts. We have two sponsors
for our netball this season and they are Rockwell
Livestock and Property and Welderup. Thanks to
these two sponsors for their support of our netball
girls. Fundraising for the year will be needed to
top our bank account, we will tell all when we get
it organised.
LEAGUE - We only have three more training days
until the start of the competition and our volunteer
coaches are finding it hard to train their team as
only half of the members are turning up for training
days. We need everyone to turn up as ball control,
defensive moves and leaders on the field need to
be recognised and especially in the 10’s side who
score this year and play competitively for points
– this team needs to be fit and well drilled before
the comp starts. So please help these coaches
out and get your child to training. REGO MONEY
NEEDED. No rego means you can’t play.
ALL AGE GROUPS - We have now entered all age
groups into the Group 21 mini/mod competition.
We have a 6 and Under Cross Country Merriwa
side coached by Kacie Neale and John Whitby;
7 and Under Merriwa RSL team coached by
Bruce Blackadder; 8 and Under (still waiting for a
coach, call me if you’re interested); 9 and Under
Merriwa IGA coached by John Cronin; 10 and
Under Kingslyn team coached by Jason Keane;
13 and Under Rostos team coached by Reece
Hancock and a combined Merriwa Denman 16
and Under sponsored by Windmill Agribusiness
and coached by Robert McNamara. Thank you
to all our sponsors and coaches for your support
of our league players.
MAJOR SPONSOR - For this season our major
sponsor is the Merriwa Sports Club. They have
been great supporters of junior rugby league for
many years and we appreciate their support.
Shorts and sleeve sponsors are Merriwa Petroleum
and Ag Supplies; JACMON Pty Ltd; Welderup; No
Bull Skips; Merriwa Rotary Club; Max’s Country
Cuts; Myrtlemount Stock Horses.

COMPETITION - For the league, it starts on Saturday
April 2 and will be played at Aberdeen. Times
each week will be known on Wednesday of that
week and will be placed on our Facebook page
on Thursday each week and also spoken by the
coach at Friday trainings. A draw with venues
and club/coach contact list will be handed out
at training. If you didn’t get one see Elaine. Don’t
forget that we car pool - if you can’t get your
child to footy call your coach and we will get a
lift organised.
FIRST HOME GAME - Our first home game will be
on Round 3 – April 23, and we will need all hands
on deck to cater for over 500 people who will
come to Merriwa to play junior league. We will
do a roster and allocate a time for each team
so please make sure your team has volunteers
helping in your time slot. If you walk passed the
canteen and they are busy please walk in and
help out. RULES prohibit children in the canteen
at any time for safety/insurance reasons. We will
also need assistance setting out the grounds early
in the morning and setting up the canteen. Call
Elaine, Phil or Andrew if you can help or arrive
down at the grounds at 7.00am and we will find
you a job.
Don’t forget - TRAINING IS EVERY TUESDAY AND
FRIDAY. For more information contact Elaine on
6548 8560.

Merriwa Little Athletics
March 18, 19 and 20 was the weekend of the NSW
State Little Athletic Championships attracting
thousands of athletes from all over the state. This
year, for the first time, Darcy Taaffe qualified to
represent the Hunter Zone in the 800m. On paper,
based on Regional times, Darcy’s odds weren’t
too great ranking an outside chance at best in
22nd spot out of 24 state qualifiers.
Whether it was just plain nerves, good fortune
or good preparation, Darcy put on her purple
running shoes on Sunday morning, threw on her
white and black shirt, put in her trade mark piggy
tails and decided this was her moment. Sydney
Olympic Park was abuzz with excited athletes and
plenty of anxious parents. Putting all that behind
her, she lined up at noon for what was to be her
biggest race to date.
The gun went BANG and Darcy took off like a
rocket to keep up the pace on the first lap with the
top eight runners. Keeping a fast pace she picked
up speed on the second lap to gain ground on
the seventh runner but found herself boxed in on
the inside lane in the home straight with a runner
on her elbow and one in front of her. Not sure
Page 30
what to do, she stumbled a little before dropping
back a few places to back out of her inside lane
position, taking a wide berth of the other runners
and powering down the straight like lightening to
gain another two positions to finish, remarkably,
in third.
The second heat was up next with all of the
fastest qualifiers. Predictably, their fabulous times
dropped her back in the rankings to tenth overall,
but certainly a great achievement to finish in the
state’s top ten. With a taste of the States still in
her mouth, I am sure she’ll be giving it a red hot
go again next year and looking forward to more
training sessions with her distance runner team
mates Ben Keane, Clancy and Darcy Moore.
Alas, this is our last week
of training for 2015/16
season. Our end of year
BBQ, AGM and Awards
night will be held on a
Monday night early in
Term 2 once the awards
have been engraved.
We will send you a text
with a date once its
confirmed and pop it in
the Ringer.

Merriwa Pony Club
On Sunday, March 6 we ventured “over the
range” to Murrurundi for their annual President’s
Cup Day. Merriwa was represented by only seven
riders but still managed to come home with many
great success stories.
Of note was the return to the ring by Lauren Hunt
on Topaz in the Associate Girls. This is the last year
Lauren is able to compete in Pony Club before
exceeding the upper age limit so she was making
every post a winner and walked away with the
Senior Champion Girl Rider and Champion
Associate Girl ribbons. Younger cousin, Anastasia
Martin also had a very successful day picking
up the Reserve Champion Senior Girl Rider and
the Reserve
Champion
Girl 15 and
under
17
years. Not to
be out done
was little sister
Nicole Martin
who won the
Champion
Girl 11 and
Under

years and the Overall Highest Pointscore for the
day and received a beautiful embroided rug for
her efforts.
April Lawler rode in the 13 and under 15 years age
group and came home with a first in the Snake
Race, second in
the In and Out of
the Paddock and
third in the Barrel
Race and her Hack
Class. Little brother
Roy again rode the
ever reliable Jester
in the 9 and under
11years Boys age
group and got a
swag of ribbons
including first in the
Snake Race and
Barrel, second in
the Diamond Flag, Key hole and In and out of
the Paddock, third in the Bareback and fourth his
Rider Class. An extremely commendable effort,
being only his second competition on this horse.
In the Under 7 years
age group Isla Murphy
attended
her
first
competition day for the
year and she proved to
be too elusive for her
competitors, bring home
a swag of ribbons and
secured the Champion
Girl Under 7 years.
Last weekend we held our annual Campdraft
School and Competition Day on Saturday and
our President’s Cup Day on Sunday. Results will be
in next week’s Ringer, so kids keep an eye out for
your results.

Merriwa Rugby League Football
Club
We had a win, first of many for 2016.
Merriwa Magpies Reserve Grade took on Coolah
Roos on Friday March 18. Our tries were scored
by; Jay-me Taylor (scoring two tries), Seth Morgan,
Ben Morgan and Daniel Walmsley each scoring
one try. Jeremy Nicholls converted two goals.
The end score was 24-12.
Well done to all the boys! There was some great
quality football played for a trial game between
two very even teams.
Our next game is at Merriwa on Saturday April 2
starting at 2.00pm against Greta Branxton. Hope
to see all our great supporters there.
Jessyca Morgan
Ben
Patterson
again
proved that time in the
saddle, even at his tender
age, reaps rewards and
for the first time in his short
career he was awarded
the Reserve Champion
Junior Boy Rider and picked up the Champion
Boy Under 7 years.
