NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS READING DAY
NEWS FROM OUR LIBRARIAN
It has been a very busy in library this term. All classes
have been participating in the Premiers Reading
Challenge. While years Kindergarten-Year 2 share
their Premier’s Reading Challenge books in their
classrooms, Years 3-6 are encouraged to read
their own books at home, in their classroom and
in library sessions. They then write their books on
their log sheet, get it signed by a teacher, then
log it onto the computer. We have been very
impressed with their enthusiasm.
Unfortunately for the last two weeks we have had
to stop borrowing from the library. This is because
we have been doing a stocktake and have
had a few technical problems. We are finalising
our stocktake and borrowing will recommence
soon. We are encouraging ALL families to have
a search at home for any books that may have
been forgotten.

Last Wednesday, Kindergarten and Year 1
participated in the Simultaneous Reading day
at the town library. We all had a fabulous time
walking down to the library with our colourful
array of hats, to listen to this year’s book, “I Have
This Hat”. We would like to send a huge thank you
to Mark Shields at the Town Library for inviting us
to participate in this event.

St Joseph’s
Primary School
Maintaining a positive school community is
the first stage of the Kidsmatter Framework.
A positive school community gives children
a sense of security that their needs will be met
(www.kidsmatter.edu.au). The current focus on
strengthening anti bullying strategies is one way
we do this at St Joseph’s. The students attended
the live performance of “Bully Bull-Ring” last week
and were introduced (Years Kinder-4) and reintroduced (Years 5 and 6) to the menagerie
of animals teaching valuable strategies to deal
with bullies and to build personal resilience. These
strategies will be reinforced in classes over the next
few weeks. It is good to remember that bullying is
repetitive and targeted by someone with more
power towards another. Bullying will not be
tolerated at St Joseph’s. Students are all aware
of the steps to take if they feel they are being
bullied. Parents are encouraged to report any
bullying concerns to the teachers also. Students
are also aware that some student’s behaviours
are annoying and make them cranky, but this is
not necessarily bullying and needs to be dealt
with differently.
Athletics coaching is providing a wonderful
opportunity for all students to develop their track
and field skills. This week’s training will focus on
high jump technique. The St Joseph’s Athletics
Carnival will be on June 3 and we are really
looking forward to that. Parents who are able to
help are encouraged to send their forms back
in as soon as possible so that Miss Foran can
allocate jobs to you.

Cross Country success was sweet as Darcy Taaffe
ran a superb race to finish third against all the
age group runners at the Diocesan Carnival
last week. Darcy will now compete at the next
level on June 17 at Eastern Creek in Sydney,
representing not only our school and the Upper
Hunter Region but also the Maitland Newcastle
Diocese. Congratulations Darcy and best wishes
for the next step. Congratulations to all our other
competitors at the Dio carnival. They ran very well
in their respective races and were tremendously
good sports in their acclamation of Darcy’s
achievements.
The ASPIRE program of dramatic arts coaching
provided Phase Two sessions last week. Anna
Kerrigan ran the students through their new script
and started coaching of some new songs. All
classes were very enthusiastic over the two days
and are now madly practising parts and making
alterations to match the context.

The school and regional Spelling Bees are
approaching rapidly. All students are practising
spelling out loud at home with their parents…any
words will do! This initiative aims at improving the
spelling skills of all our students.
It was wonderful to meet so many people at the
school readiness evening at the Pre-school on
Monday night. Don’t forget to send your enrolment
forms in as we need to start the planning process
for next year, now.

Cancer is said to touch every family in some way
at some stage. Congratulations to Miss Elizabeth
Foran who worked with her Stage 3 leaders to
organise a girls night in last week. Many mums
and daughters enjoyed a night in together and
at the same time raised over $260.00 for breast
cancer research.

Dubbo is winning the trifecta with St Joseph’s
school taking all three classes to its attractions
for their major excursions this year. Last week saw
the infants at the cultural centre and next week
will see the Stage 3 students visit Wambangalang
Environmental Education Centre to complement
their Science program and Wellington Caves for a
geological experience and a visit to the National
Trust’s Dundullimal Homestead will add to the
History curriculum. The week after this the Stage 2
class will visit Dubbo Zoo.
Exciting times are ahead for the students as they
await the arrival of the Questacon Science show
on June 9. We will be joined by the students from
Cassilis school on the day.
Reports are being prepared presently as
teachers collate data relating to each student’s
achievement over the first semester. There will be
the opportunity for interviews offered in Week 10.
A reminder to parents to look at the goals set in
Term 1 and Term 2 and to continue working with
your child to help them achieve these.

voted Student of the
Week this week by
staff and students
for
his
improved
resilience and overall
respectful

positive attitude.
James trained hard
during Athletics and
touch football practice at the beginning of last
week and showed some promising improvements.
On Wednesday, during the Touch Football
Knockout, James went out on the field and did his
best. He remained positive throughout the game
and encouraged team members to keep their
heads up high and have fun. In the playground,
James played safely and respectfully and
completed his work to an improved standard.
Some of the reasons his peers voted for him
included;
“James because he has been working hard in
Maths” and “James for being respectful”.
Congratulations, and keep up the wonderful
work, James!
A MESSAGE FROM MISS H
Congratulations to the Cassilis Touch football
team for their outstanding effort, teamwork and
cooperation. They may not have won the game
last Wednesday but they gave it their all and we
are extremely proud of how far they’ve come!
This week will be another exciting week with
Pittman Cup on this Wednesday! Please let the
school know if you have any issues transporting
your child/children to Sandy Hollow on the day!
On Wednesday, students travelled by bus and car
to Merriwa Central School to compete against
Sandy Hollow in the Small Schools Knockout.
Although we were down on numbers, our students
worked hard together as a team on the day and
stayed positive and kept going throughout the
whole game.
They didn’t win the match but they gave it a red
hot try and followed the school’s motto of ‘Strive
with Pride’.
I would like to thank Mrs Anderson for driving
us to and from Merriwa Central School and the
ROAR boys and Mr Grant for doing a terrific job
of training us for the game. Thank you also to
the referees, the Sandy Hollow players and the
students themselves for their efforts on the day.
We are very proud of you!
PITTMAN CUP TRAINING WITH NICKY WESTERN!
Last Monday, students had their second Pittman
Cup training session with Nicky Western. They
practiced their starts, shot put, relay and javelin
throws. Today was our last training session with
Nicky before Pittman Cup. We focused on long
jump and high jump in order to prepare ourselves
for Wednesday!
Thank you Nicky for travelling such long distances
to support our school!
Miss Storrier and I are beginning some professional
learning of our own in the form of Quality
Teaching Rounds in the next few weeks. During
this time, there will be days when we will be away
from the school and observing other classrooms
but also we will be observed by other teachers
in the classroom. We look forward to improving
the quality of our lessons through this fantastic
professional learning opportunity provided to us
by the University of Newcastle.

RECONCILIATION WEEK
NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME
On Wednesday afternoon, Miss Storrier and Mrs
Nairne walked Cassilis students down to the town
library to participate in National simultaneous
Storytime.

read and made
their own pirate hat
for craft with Mrs
Dowler afterwards.

lovely afternoon!
This week, many groups are celebrating
Reconciliation Week. This year the theme is
Our History, Our Story, Our Future. So what is
Reconciliation Week? Each year, National
Reconciliation Week is an opportunity for
everyone to build on respectful relationships
shared by Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islanders and
other Australians.
It begins on May 27 which marks the anniversary
of the 1967 referendum that gave voting rights
to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It
also allowed for these people to be recognised
in the national census.
June 3 commemorates the High Court of
Australia’s Mabo decision in 1992. This landmark
decision recognised that Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander people held special connections
to the land which existed before colonisation.
This allowed land rights and Native Titles to be
granted.

On Tuesday, staff will participate in an Adobe
connect
session

Narragunnawali:
Reconciliation in Schools and Early Learning.
The Narragunnawali people are the traditional
owners and custodians of the land and water

on which the Reconciliation Australia’s Canberra
office is located.
We will be looking at ways to improve respect,
reduce prejudice and strengthening relationships
between the school and the wider community.
Students will participate in some reconciliation
activities later in the week.
UPPER HUNTER STEER CHALLENGE
Our application is ready to go, however, we
require some assistance with transport and initial
care of our steer. A separate note was sent home
to parents of students in the cattle team. I need
to know by Tuesday 14th June, if you can help us
out.
PRIMARY EXCURSION
Notes went out this week for our major excursion
to the Blue Mountains and Jenolan Caves at the
end of Term 3. We will be joining students and
staff from Murrurundi Public School to get costs
down. The excursion will cost $280.00 for the three
days, however, we will be doing some fundraising
activities over the next three months to cut costs.
The permission note and a $50.00 deposit are due
back at school by Friday June 10.

TOUCH FOOTBALL KNOCKOUT

ALL THE NEWS FROM KINDERGARTEN/YEAR 1/2
The children continue to work very well as we
enter the second half of term two. During writing
lessons, the Year 1 children have been studying
informative texts and examining all the different
features that they can use to obtain information
on a topic.
While Kindergarten is continuing their L3 group
they have been concentrating on writing
sentences. Even writing some independently.
Thomas McLean, Taylan Blackhurst-Marsh,
Gabbie McLean and Shykiah Walters felt very
proud of themselves last week when they learnt
the last of 42 sounds. However, continual revision
of these sounds is essential in order for the children
to enhance their reading skills.
Over the last couple of weeks Year 1 have been
working on the concept of addition as the basis
of an investigation unit entitled ‘Number Facts
Blast Off’. As we move further into this unit the
children will explore the wonders of space through
this investigation which offers opportunities to
integrate with science and the arts as the children
work co-operatively to sort and classify, match
and calculate number facts to 20.
Last Wednesday Years 3-5 went to Merriwa
Central School to participate in a touch football
knockout competition against Cassilis.
The team played exceptionally well winning
13-0. All members should be congratulated for
their performance. They chased, defended and
applied all of the skills they have developed
during training sessions.
Tries for the team went to Dustynn Turner (9),
Andrew Harris (2), Reece McCandless (1) and
Ayden Marsh (1).
Our team would like to thank Cassilis Public School
for their competition at the event, Merriwa Central
School for the use of the grounds, Mr Grant for

Kindergarten have studied 2D shapes including
triangles, squares, circles and rectangles. They
have also been developing their skills in ordering
and writing numbers and ordinal numbers.
As well as many activities involving the days of
the week, Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 have
continued to develop their creative skills as they
were involved in directed drawing and painting
lesson in visual arts and singing lessons as we
prepared for the Eisteddfod.

EISTEDDFOD PERFORMANCE
On Friday our children travelled to St James
Primary School in Muswellbrook to compete in
the Muswellbrook and Upper Hunter Eisteddfod.
A sincere thank you to all the parents who were
able to transport the children and for also joining
the audience to support our children. Your
assistance was greatly appreciated.
The children performed two songs. In the ‘Any
Song’ section they sang ‘Here Comes the Sun’
and in the ‘Australian Song’ section they sang
‘Tears From Clouds’.
We were very proud of our students’ performances
and all the effort that each child contributed as
they prepared for this event. They returned to
school after being awarded Highly Commended
for both performances.

EISTEDDFOD
Congratulations to the students who competed
at the Eisteddfod on Friday. Gaining highly
commended in both sections was a wonderful
result. A big thank you to Adam Wills from the
Conservatorium who worked our students over
the last four weeks to prepare them for the
performance. A big thank you to Ms Bullock, who

WHAT IS SCHOOL READINESS?
In NSW schools a child can begin kindergarten as
young as 4.5 years of age and needs to be enrolled
by 6 years. This in itself means that the concept of
readiness may be a little confusing and there are
many skills that children need to develop in order
to make the transition to big school as seamless
as possible. Slowly but surely the trend is that
kindergartens are becoming more like Pre-School
with the Early Years framework crossing over to
children of 6 years, but with the high demand of
performance on primary teachers and students
the transition can often be stressful. Bear in mind
though, that children are adaptive and will soon
find their place in these new environments.
Transition to school programs will be commencing
next term and these are a wonderful way to build
familiarity with the schools, their new teachers,
new routines and expectations, it may even be
a chance for the student to make a new friend.
On these transition days the student is generally
first accompanied by a parent or guardian,
they are a short informal visit. As the program
continues the frequency and duration of the
visits expands to encompass independent class
time and exploring the environment including
the library and canteen. The children build a lot
of confidence and pride as they are transitioned.
Draw with your child - I call it table time, it doesn’t
matter what you do but using scissors or pencils is
a good start.
Spend time talking to your child and sharing new
experiences - so much information is transferred
through conversation. Just be sure that you are
aware of your child’s comprehension skills and
that they are not being confused by concepts
that may be a little out of their age range.
Sing songs - this is one of the most effective ways to
learn or reinforce new information. Playing music
that has an instructional element also assists with
coordination and is so much fun to do together.

So it is with sadness that we farewell Rev’d Bill and
Judy Howarth after Sunday service on June 6.
Again in 2016 we are intending to run a Feedlot
Trial of local breeders cattle at Alexander Downs.
The intention is to source pens of three cattle from
local breeders in two classes, feed grain for 90
days, present and judge cattle on Show day at
Merriwa Showground, and then process cattle at
Woolworths Tamworth two weeks after the show.
At the completion of the trial breeders will gain
valuable information on the performance of their
cattle through the trial, along with carcase and
MSA data.
Just a reminder - the air-conditioned Parish Hall is
available for hire.
Class 1 consist of cattle weighing 240 - 290 kg at
entry.

MEN’S GOLF NEWS
Last Sunday, saw an amazing roll up of some
68 men and women golfers, vying for the title
of HRDGA Sand green champion. With cold
and breezy conditions, it was tough going for
some, but Mr Andrew Korlevic (Merriwa) (from a
countback from Brett Reid Murrurundi )with a 79
off the stick, managed to take the title. Nett winner
Ken Thornton. In the womens, Melita Watson,
took the honours with Patty Riley taking out the
nett trophy. The president of the HRDGA praised
the course and its curators and was impressed
by the turnout. Big thanks to the girls Vivian and
Cathy for their service of the delicious steak and
sausage sandwiches cooked to perfection by
the experienced Brian Cooper.

On Saturday, Merriwa Magpies took on
Scone at home.
League Tag kicking off at 2.00pm. We knew
it would be a tough game as Scone is a great
team who have been undefeated since Group
21 league tag began in 2014. I think we did a
great job to keep the score 40-4. You could
see how frustrated they were getting with our
defence. I think they thought they were going to
get a better score.
Reserve Grade commenced at 3.00pm, Merriwa
and Scone both on 12 at the half time break. It
was a good physical game unfortunately Merriwa
went down 38-12.
Our next game is at Murrurundi on Saturday June
4. League Tag at 2.00pm and Reserve Grade at
3.00pm.

NETBALL REPORT
COMPRINT M AND M’S - The M and M’s consist
of both Merriwa and Scone players all of which
have improved immensely since their first game.
All the girls are starting to work as a team and
communicate on the court. With losing Lulu a
few weeks ago we then gained another scone
player called Lucy, welcome to the team Lucy!
The girls battled the bitterly cold wind and rain
on the weekend against the Maltesers to come
out with a win of 1-0. Paige and I are super proud
of all of the girls with how they have improved
not only as a team but individually as well. With
the girls having to switch around in the different
positions throughout the game they all get the
opportunity to show off their outstanding abilities.
This week one of the girls really stood out, Olive
has developed amazing defensive skills and
always gives 110% this is why she was awarded
the player of the week, well done Olive.

WELDERUP OPALS - What a cold and miserable
day we had on Saturday. With only a couple of
girls making it to netball early enough to warm
up, our first quarter started slowly. I must stress that
it is important to have the girls at the courts half
an hour early. This gives them time to warm up
to prevent injury, especially with it getting colder.
These girls may be young but can still hurt their
fingers, ankles, knees etc if they are not warmed
up appropriately.
Warming up together also allows the girls to play
better as a team. This gets them focused on the
game rather than being asleep for the first two
quarters as seen on a few occasions.
In the first quarter the girls tried hard but it was
obvious that the other team wanted the ball more
scoring 8-0. The other team were all over our girls
and therefore we spent all our time chasing them
all around the court.
Second quarter the girls seem to wake up
and move around better. They had a lot more
possession but were not able to make it to the
hoop. Not a bad effort here from all the girls. We
kept them to four nil in this quarter.
In the third quarter, the girls defended brilliantly.
They marked their opposition and had them on

the back burner. We were even able to score a
goal. One all for this quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the other team had their
best players and shooters back on the court.
They again left us behind but not because we
weren’t defending but because we were unable
to convert our goal attempts.
Overall our girls played a great game against one
of our toughest teams. If we could have made
all the hoops that we attempted we would have
given the other team a run for their money this
week, so my homework again is practice your
hoops at home. Because we have to share it
around so much we need at least half if not all of
the girls making hoops every time they shoot (plus
it gets the girls outside instead of in front of the tv).
‘Player of the Week’ this week went to Ella Towell.
Ella was given a few different instructions in
between each of the quarters and each time she
took the court she had applied what was asked.
She also defended really well, not intimidated
when her opponent was a good head taller.
FANTA’S INTERMEDIATE 12 – 14’S - Well done to
the Fanta’s on Saturday. We finally managed
a win against the Solo’s 31-27! Team members:
Alana Smith, Elly Blackadder, Sophie Inder,
Olivia Mclean, Mekayla Towell, Jemma Grady,
Issy Swan and Scone players Hede Sharpe and
Annabelle Baker. All the girls played their positions
exceptionally well and worked as a team. Our
shooters Alana, Olivia, Elly, Annabelle, Sophie and
new comer Issy produced some great moves and
goals. Our defence in the circle proved very hard
to get through as well, keeping the Solo’s to only
a two goal quarter in the second quarter. The first
quarter was very close, but the girls extended
their lead in the second quarter and managed
to maintain that level to come away with the win.
Congratulation girls and hope we can do the
same next week. Keep working on your fitness at
home. Don’t forget black skirts and Merriwa shirt
to be worn at every game.
Keep up the great work girls, you make me proud
every time you take the court.

MERRIWA IGA UNDER 9’S - The 9’s travelled to
Singleton where they took on Scone Blue on
Saturday. With the cold conditions, everyone
was keen to get out and run around. They all
played an extremely good game of footy and
you can tell they are taking on board what they
learn at training. Jackson tackled well, moving
up in the line and scored two tries. Maddison
have a few good runs and made some great
tackles. Beau ran the ball up more in this game
and got involved in tackling. Cody showed the
importance of moving up in a line and making
tackles. Harry decided to show off his step and
just how agile he is, scoring two tries. Toby made
some great tackles and scored two tries of his
own. Logan wasn’t afraid to get the ball and
make some good metres. Riley played up as well
and showed how tough his was against the older
boys, and always backed up runners.
‘Player of the Week’ this week went to Harry Cook.
Harry played a great game of footy, showing of
his agility and speed, helping him score his two
tries. Harry also made some really great tackles
throughout the game which prevented more
tries being scored. Good work Harry!
JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE
LANDMARK TOWNSEND UNDER 8’S - Saturday’s
Under 8’s game was played in Singleton against
Singleton White. The opposition were tough
competition for our Under 8’s but they didn’t give
up at all and worked well together as a team. We
saw a few of our Merriwa kids make breaks away
from Singleton, although the opposition had us
on defence and didn’t let any of our kids through
to score a try. Thank you to Isaac and Zac for
playing up with the Under 8’s. Good luck Under
8’s when you play in Muswellbrook on Saturday.

CROSS COUNTRY UNDER 6’S - On the weekend
the Under 6’s travelled to singleton to play
singleton white, when we arrived the kids were
really keen to play another good game like last
week, when the game started our defence was
great to hold singleton out. I couldnt be more
proud of this bunch off kids and how they are
improving as a team. The trys went to Jai Wright
with one, Amelia wright with one, Jye Bates with
two and Rylan Neale with two. I would also like
to put a special mention in to the Cross Country
Merriwa for sponsoring the man of the match with
a packet of chips and a can of drink thankyou for
that. To all the under 6s get to training on Tuesday

ROSTO UNDER 13’S AND DENMAN/MERRIWA
MAGPIES UNDER 16’S - Our Under 13’s and 16’s
travelled to Raymond terrace for the 13’s and
then onto East Maitland for the 16’s by bus thanks
to Cowans!
Our Under 13’s played extremely well after their
win the week before. An injury to Nickolas Whitby
in the second half brought an end to the game
with our boys storming home although behind 146. A lot of good judges believe they would have
run out winners if the game had been played
out. Gordon Bradley scored our try and Logan
Pike converted it. All players performed well. Nick
olas Whitby pinched a muscle in his back and will
be fine.
Our Denman-Merriwa Under 16’s played the
undefeated East Maitland and got off to a
nervous start trailing 24-0 at half time, the boys
put it together in the second half out scoring
the opposition 12-8 with Zeth scoring twice. I’m
expecting this team to finish the season strongly.

Last weekend was the Wingen President’s Cup
Day. Merriwa was represented by nine young,
very talented riders.
Emily Ninness riding Chrome was awarded the
Reserve Champion Junior Handler Under 25 Years
and after picking up ribbons in all of her events
was the winner of the 11 and Under 13 Years Girl
Highest Point Score. Nick Morgan riding Cyril was
the Reserve Champion Junior Boy Rider and he
too won ribbons in all his events to take home the
Reserve Highest Point Score Boy 11 and Under 13
years.

home with the Boy Highest Point Score. Kirra
Green riding Lady and Isla Murphy riding Indie
had a ding dong battle all day in the Under 7
Years Girl age group with Kirra getting the upper
hand, being the Highest Point Score winner while
Isla was the Reserve Grade Champion.

Merriwa Polocrosse Club
POLOCROSSE CARNIVAL 2016
Merriwa Polocrosse Club held its annual Carnival
at the Merriwa Racecourse on the weekend of
May 14-15, 2016. Beautiful autumn weather, great
going underfoot after recent rain and plenty of
teams made for a very exciting and successful
weekend.
This year Merriwa Club continued with its Multi
Horse format, and it seems that many of the
players are pleased that we have. Lots of riders
taking the opportunity to bring out some young
horses to give them some match experience. A
total of 31 teams nominated for the weekend in
Men’s, Women’s, Junior’s and Sub Junior divisions.
This was a very pleasing number of teams for
Merriwa, when some other carnivals this season
have been battling for numbers. Players coming
from far and wide including Sydney, Walcha,
Macksville and local Hunter Valley clubs .
Once again with the help of Col Bates from
‘Kingslyn’ the fields were in immaculate condition,
and the going was almost perfect after the recent
rain. In fact, the entire racecourse area looked a
picture. Thanks Col.
31 Teams with our Multi Horse format brings well in
excess of 250 horses and probably as many as 500
people to the town. I’m sure the local businesses
that were open over the weekend noticed.
This year the canteen was once again run by the
Little Athletics committee, with Tash Taaffe and
her band of willing helpers. I am sure that they
had a very successful weekend with the large
crowd that was in attendance, and I did hear
very positive reports from lots of patrons about
the many different items available on the Menu.
Well done and thank you for a job well done.
This year, for the first time ever, Merriwa were
unable to field a team due to the demands on
our very small committee in running a Carnival.
With just five members to do a huge job of putting
on a Polocrosse carnival, we just couldn’t find
time for the luxury of playing at our own carnival.
Patrons and players were kept well informed of
all the action in the finals on Sunday by several
guest commentators, including Mick Fitzgerald
and Lance Anderson. Lance is an Australian
Polocosse Team member and did a wonderful
job of commentating the Men’s Final.
