There are fly fishing classes, fly tyers to observe and learn from, and many vendors with some good deals on fly fishing gear. Concerned that the early drift boats and river dories were being lost to time, he researched their origins, their uses, lines and construction detail, and the people who built and used them. His book, Drift Boats and River Dories (Stackpole Books, 2007), chronicles the people behind the boats, describes how they are built and presents the lines and construction detail of 10 of the 13 boats he has recovered. Since its publication, people across this continent and four others have, and are, building these boats as fishing platforms and white water river runners. The City of Eugene will provide all necessary tools. This is one of the most popular outings for the club and it’s not unusual to have 20 people or more on hand. We look forward to a good workout, good company and improved habitat for the Ponds. Delta Ponds are located on Goodpasture Island Rd, 1 mile from the Delta Hwy Exit. We meet in the north parking lot. 3 Bob O’Brien and Glen Neal did return several days later, and Bob caught his first beautiful steelhead, a testament to his persistence and skill. Alsea River Outing Marv Clemons, Outing Host January 30, 2016 Thanks go to Marv for being such a wealth of information for all of us as outing host, and to all those who cheerfully participated in the Alsea River outing. By Trese Slocum T he CFF members, ready to take on the steelhead in the Alsea River, were a hardy group. Dressed for rain and cold weather, the fishers met at McDonalds in Junction City at 7 AM on Saturday, January30th, carpooled and caravanned across the country mountain roads to the Alsea Hatchery. There they joined up with other CFF members who were excited to see the huge numbers of impressive sized fish being counted in the Hatchery holding pens. There were 11 fishers who undertook the adventure: Marv Clemons, who was the superb outing host, and participants, Randy Beard, Al Heide, Bryce Hughes and friend, Glen Neal, Bob O’Brien, Don Quinton, Trese Slocum, Jim Zelenka, and Steve Wasilewski. After noting the activity of the other fishers along the banks at the hatchery and Clemens Park, the group decided to head further down river and fish the banks at Mill Creek boat ramp. There the area started out empty of other fishers, which made the bank access and fishing much more enjoyable. The weather took a turn for the better, and after just a brief period of rain, the sun came out and warmed the day. Different steelhead flies and egg patterns were used to entice the fish to take the hook. While some good sized steelhead were there, the CFF group came up empty handed. At noon the group joined together for lunch at one of the picnic tables, sharing delectable goodies, including Thelma’s wonderful oatmeal raisin cookies and snickerdoodle treats, some asiago cheese and bacon bread, chips, and candies. Enjoying the camaraderie of the group, stories of the huge fish caught on previous occasions, the best access places for fishing, and successful fly patterns and setups were shared. After a boisterous exchange, Marv showed the group other areas good for fishing down river, including trails to the water’s edge where the fish held up along the bank. We then returned to the Alsea hatchery, and fished there in the afternoon. Several fish were caught around us, but again the group wasn’t able to catch the elusive steelhead. The group headed back to Eugene just as the rain returned. Huge double rainbows were visible a good part of the journey home. Some of our favorite venues are returning and we have some new destinations lined up as well. We hope you will be able to join us for this year’s fishing adventures. Check out the CFF Outings Calendar. (Reminder: only CFF members and immediate family can participate in outings.) We are also looking for new outing hosts for this year. If you have a special fishing hole you would like to share with other club members, please contact Trese Slocum at [email protected]. Information is available to help with outing organization. Twenty three CFF members worked 153 hours volunteering to tie flies, teach fly casting, meet the public and chat up the many show participants who stopped by the booth. Once again this year we ran out of Cascade Family Fly Fishers membership forms and brochures all three days. Thanks to Roz Kauffman and Steve Overall the supply of brochures and club newsletters was replenished but by the end of the show we were out again. Thanks to Jerry Blade, Trese Slocum, and Curtis Erickson who came in early to assist with the booth set up and stay to tie flies and teach casting. I realize the remaining list is long but I feel that all deserve public mention especially our new members for whom this was their first time working this event. Thanks to all who participated and helped make this year’s show another fun success. Thanks go to Randy Beard, Bill Burleigh, Hal Comstock, Vic Hadley, Dennis Munroe, Steve Overall, Rod Roth, Joe Hamilton, Joe Moody, Roz Kauffman, Bob O’Brian, Brandy Williford, Mike Marlatt, Bob Wolfe, Glen Neal, Ginnie Grilley, Bryce Hughes, Kat & Frank Paiva and yours truly. (Please forgive me if I missed someone.) Rod Roth—Tying In my humble opinion and that of many other vendors, the show this year was the best so far. Large and diverse attendance, an increase in the number of vender many of who were new, lots of great sales and an aura of general fun filled enjoyment. Having the extra people at our booth contributed much to the fact that many more passers by stopped, watched, asked questions, and picked up club information; many of whom indicated they would attend our next meeting and possibly join. Many who stopped were surprised and impressed at the number and diversity of the activities the club provides for its membership. Marv Clemons teaching casting Roz Kauffman—Tying It’s always fun to enjoy the camaraderie among the members, but with the many friends, past members, and family who stop by the booth to wish us well and enjoy the demonstrations, and lie about their fishing adventures really puts the frosting on the cake for the event. Jerry Blade, Trese Slocum, Bob O’Brian and Curtis Erickson all stayed until the bitter end to do the take-down. Their help was much appreciated. From all reports, those of us who participated look forward to another great Boat and Sport Show event in 2017. Thank you all again and enjoy. 6 Cascade Family Flyfishers 2016 Club Leadership Executive Board Club From the Editor: Newsletter submissions are due the 2nd Sunday of the month.
