Issue 12/2015, 19 August 2015
Issue No. 12/2015 Wednesday 19 August 2015 FROM THE PRINCIPAL… Star of the Sea prides itself on a deep, broad and rich curriculum, providing every student with an opportunity to excel across a range of interests, activities and pursuits. Recently I have been delighted and moved by this desire for, and pursuit of, excellence by members of our College community … Holly Felsenthal and Charlotte Keon have displayed outstanding commitment, initiative and creativity to receive the Queen’s Guide Award (read report on page 3) the speed and skill of our senior netballers against a New Zealand team last week could have been a game between the Diamonds and the Silver Ferns at the World Netball Championships! Sarah Loschiavo (Year 11) has become the first Star student to receive a Gold Spirit Award for excellence in academic pursuit, community service, cultural and sporting activities Year 7 Maths’ students undergoing lunchtime tutoring last Wednesday in a bid to develop their skills and improve their marks VET hospitality students prepared and served a delicious three-course meal for the College Board members on Monday night (see photo on page 2) Year 10 students have participated in the Growing Tall Poppies program this week hosted by the Physics Department at Melbourne University, working on specific projects under the tutelage of staff and postgraduate students on Friday staff will meet in a range of forums to hone their own professional practice and offer collegial support to one another In addition to the above, the names of students who have been acknowledged for their excellence in Semester 1 studies and, for the first time, the significant improvement in their studies are published on pages 4 and 5. Heartfelt congratulations to all! It is with great sadness that I offer our condolences to the family of Jennie Morrish, a former Star music teacher, who died last week (see page 2). I would also like to wish Mrs Jennifer Levett, Lily Zuzek, Elouise Ackerman, Clare Cooper, Josie Holland and Tori Coyne a safe and enlightening exchange experience with the Iona Presentation College community in Perth across the coming week. Although the wintry weather may have left some of us feeling a bit depleted, I encourage and urge each member of our community to be inspired by the Guiding Principle from our Mission Statement – teaching and learning with passion and excellence. As one very proud principal, I know that everyone has been blessed with God-given gifts that we are called to develop and utilise to the very best of our ability. We pray … Gracious God, you have showered each one of us with abundant gifts. As we consider our 2016 subject selection fill us with wisdom to make good decisions, the humility to accept advice and the courage to utilise our gifts in the service of others. We make this and all our prayers in your most Holy Name, now and forever. Amen. Star’s family newsletter is published fortnightly and we want your items for our popular feature … STUDENT NEWS. It’s easy! Email information and a photograph (if possible) of your daughter’s achievements outside of school hours to Judy Ryan, Publications Officer: [email protected] Year 12 students Audrey Fithall and Bridget Hogan have returned from Edinburgh having represented Australia in the Under 19 Women’s Lacrosse World Championships. Australia finished fourth in the competition, losing by just one goal to England in the bronze medal game. Audrey and Bridget had a good championship, both playing in key defence roles. What a fabulous effort! Roisin Feeney (Year 8) recently competed in the Victorian Junior State Hockey Championships as part of the Metro Flames Under 13 Girls’ team. Competition for places in the Flames team was intense. They won the overall Under 13 State Hockey Champions’ title. Great work, Roisin! VET hospitality students prepared a three-course meal for the College Board members on 17 August. Vale Jenny Morrish (1984-2015) Jenny (centre) with Georgia and Kate at a recent Performing Arts Camp The Star community was saddened by the recent, untimely death of former percussion teacher, Jenny Morrish. Jenny taught at Star from 2007 until 2014. She assisted at weekly orchestral rehearsals, the annual Performing Arts Camp and numerous concerts during her time at Star. We farewelled Jenny on Tuesday at a Prayer Service conducted during the usual orchestra rehearsal time. We welcomed back to Star many of Jenny’s former students and other Star musicians. May Jenny rest in peace. Jenny was such an amazing inspiration to all the girls. She was always giving the best advice - whether about drums, problems or what amazing movie to watch next! Everyone who knew Jenny had a close bond and friendship with her. We are all going to miss her very deeply … Greta Jenny taught us all so much, not only about percussion and music but about having a positive outlook on life. Rest in peace. You will be greatly missed … Ruby Jenny brought with her a sense of fun and inclusiveness to Star … she was so talented, willing to help, happy to direct and was not only amazing with percussion but also with the string section … Larissa Jenny was inspiring as a musician and had a friendly, good-humoured relationship with her students at Star … Jo STAR OF THE SEA COLLEGE Page 3 HOLLY & CHARLOTTE RECEIVE THE PRESTIGIOUS QUEEN'S GUIDE AWARD … Heartiest congratulations to Holly Felsenthal (Year 11) and Charlotte Keon (Year 12) on receiving the Queen's Guide Award from Girl Guides Victoria (GGV). The Queen's Guide Award is Guiding’s peak achievement award. The Award is similar to the Duke of Edinburgh Award - it focuses on the awardee’s personal development that will benefit the community in the long term. The Award requires completion of the following components … accomplish leadership tasks and undertake courses community service with more than 140 hours of volunteer work outdoor skills including first aid training and outdoors qualifications cultural awareness working with peers advancing personal development and research projects on a diversity of topics from historical events to copyright law Holly Felsenthal reflected on her involvement with the GGV and the Queen's Guide Award – see below. Charlotte Keon will provide her reflections in the next edition of the newsletter – Editor How long have you been involved with the GGV? I started at the Hampton Brownies at 10 years of age, followed by the Brighton Brownies and Brighton Guides. I am still a leader at Brighton Brownies and am a member of the Rangers at Bentleigh. What would you tell your friends was the best thing about being in GGV? Camping, cooking on open fires and singing songs; being part of the Guiding family and meeting other Brownies and Guides from all over the world; participating in the annual production – Showtime; all outdoor activities (except hiking!) like abseiling and rock climbing How long did it take you to complete all of the requirements for this Award? Give an example of how you met one of the requirements of your choice … It normally takes about two years but I completed it in 18 months. I had all my evidence but it was a lot of work writing up everything. I really loved the Outdoors requirements: I chose boating because I love sailing. I had to do a “Better Sailing” course where I learnt boating skills: knots, what to do if boat capsizes, knowing the wind direction and how to handle this, steering, and what crew members do. I had to make a presentation to the Rangers about what I had learnt so I took a model boat to explain the various parts and taught them to tie knots. I reviewed their knowledge at the end of the presentation! After achieving Guiding's Peak Achievement Award, what is the future for you at the GGV? I am thinking of moving onto Olaves (18-30 year old Guides) or becoming a senior leader at 4th Brighton Brownies. I may also start Scouts … I just don’t know! Science Opportunities RACI (Royal Australian Chemical Institute) – Growing Crystals Competition Year 7 students were given a science challenge to grow the best crystal of the chemical, alum. The voluntary competition was undertaken by 73 students. Students have been vigilant in attending lunchtime sessions to prepare their solutions, select their seed crystals and to progressively photograph and measure their crystals’ growth over ten weeks. The crystals grown will be judged on their shape, size and clarity. The winners will then be entered into a state-wide competition run by RACI. We wish students luck in their efforts to grow their precious crystals. Forensic Science workshops - A Case of Identity All Year 7 students will experience this Science workshop incursion on either 8 or 9 September. Students will be given a scenario and will have the opportunity to solve the crime by examining evidence directly – shoe prints, hair and fabric fibres, blood samples, DNA profiles and weapons. It will be a fun, hands-on activity but should also show students the value of accurate measurements and observations taken at a crime scene. We look forward to enjoying this learning opportunity with students in a different setting to the Science lab. Toula Tripaydonis Science Coordinator [email protected] STAR OF THE SEA COLLEGE Page 9 Year 9 and 10 News … Upcoming Science Opportunities Year 9: The Science Experience Year 9 students who have a passion for Science are encouraged to apply for the Science Experience. This is an opportunity to participate in a three-day program full of engaging science activities, experiments, lectures and demonstrations. It is held at various university locations around Victoria with specific dates for each program. Below are some options: Melbourne University: 13 – 15 January 2016 Monash University: 19 – 21 January 2016 RMIT University: 19 – 21 January 2016 Marine and Freshwater Discovery centre – Queenscliff: 18 – 20 January 2016 Registration for the Science Experience is $120 but the Science faculty will cover half the registration for each student who applies. The balance will need to be paid by parents. This is to ensure that we can send more students to this valuable and highlysought-after enrichment program. Students often return at the start of the year with wonderful reflections and friendships made with other like-minded students. Applications (no payments yet) are due to Ms Borley by 28 August 2015. We are limited to twenty students. Year 10 Congratulations to the following Year 10 students … Karina Vasudevan, Emma Moore, Nicole Campbell and Georgia Lilley who applied for - and were successful in - undertaking a three-day research program (19 – 21 August) at the University of Melbourne Physics Department. The students will work with mentors that are PhD students and professors to complete their own investigation into imaging using diffraction techniques. At the end of the three days, there will be an opportunity to present their findings to a room of physics academics, teachers and their families. We wish them well and hope that they have a wonderful, unique science experience. We look forward to hearing about their research once they return to school. They will learn more about diseases such as cancer, malaria and neurodegenerative diseases. Well done to the students for taking your Science learning out of the classroom and into the wider community. Toula Tripaydonis Science Coordinator [email protected] The Wave update…. With the recent publication of the NAPLAN literacy and numeracy results, there has been much speculation in the media about the impact of screen time on writing skills in particular and learning more generally. Whilst your daughter has a laptop and the majority of her learning will be completed using this device each day, teachers work to continue to develop your daughter’s skills in communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. As students commented in a recent survey about their educational experiences “learning is about interacting with others - students and teachers alike”. Michelle Sweeney The Wave project leader (acting) [email protected] STAR OF THE SEA COLLEGE Page 11 Competition Choir award… Star’s Competition Choir recently performed at the By the Bay Eisteddfod and was placed 4th. They received the Highly Commended award. They competed against nine schools that were all fantastic but did not come close to our Choir’s passion, stage presence and gospel sound. The Choir was also congratulated by the organisers on their wonderful behavior and sportsmanship. Choir members: Hayley Stone, Isabelle Coyne, Tess McCullough, Elizabeth Leembruggen, Natalie Scordel, Sarah Loschavio, Sophie Henderson, Isabella Mollino, Melissa Buck, Rubina Smith, Ruby Amoore, Grace Cullen, Michaela Fernando, Carla Tomaras, Grace Harley, Georgia Burke, Molly Paynter, Kiara Stella Pledger, Katrina Repse Tenille Kearney - Stacella Coordinator [email protected] From the Library… A number of Year 7 and Year 8 students were fortunate to hear well-known author, Lucy Christopher, speak at Star. Lucy has not only written three novels - she also lectures in creative writing at Bath University in the UK. She was in Melbourne for the Writers' Festival and entertained students by describing the background to her books and the research she carries out. She also answered a number of questions from students. It was a very informative and enjoyable session! We also heard from the eccentric artist, John Wolseley, about his conceptual ideas and sprightly working methods. We viewed the different geographical features and unique plant and animal forms of varied Australian wetlands depicted in the finely-worked drawings and rich watercolour washes that characterise Wolseley’s work. Many also combined collage elements and markings made in collaboration with the natural environment through his way of working which includes burying works and using trees to mark and decorate the paper. Subverting traditional approaches to the portrayal of landscape, his artworks celebrate the beauty of the Australian wilderness and encourage an understanding of the environmental fragility and significance of the remote locations he explores. He told us fascinating stories about his artistic journey for this exhibition. He shared his encounter with Bob Marley who inspired him to “feel the rain instead of just getting wet,” noticeably influencing him years later in his current exhibition. Wolseley also took the liberty of explaining his snazzy wardrobe choice involving a 22-pocket corduroy waistcoat and multi-purpose cowboy-esque belt. We not only had the privilege of talking to the artist but also to the exhibition designer, the senior conservator of paper, a NGV curator and an education officer. They helped us gain insights into the art industry and explained how monumentally-scaled works on paper are cared for and displayed. We were also informed of the NGV’s role as a public gallery and how it promotes an exhibition such as John Wolseley’s, all of which produced a really insightful day at NGV! Amanda Bocks Year 12 Studio Arts STAR OF THE SEA COLLEGE Page 13 A CHEESY GRIN FOR LUCKY STUDENTS Secondary school students from six schools, including Star of the Sea College, have made their own camembert cheese through an innovative Dairy Australia program, Cows Create Careers – Camembert in the Classroom. The program is designed to encourage secondary school teachers and students to learn about the Australian dairy industry while introducing students to dairy manufacturing careers and pathways. Teachers are trained to make camembert cheese – they then transfer this knowledge to their students. Over a term, students make their own camembert cheese in the classroom and complete assessment tasks including a multimedia advertisement addressing ‘Why Dairy is an Important Part of Our Diet’. Upon completion of the program, the cheeses are judged and awarded the region’s winning cheese at a ‘Big Day Out’ awards presentation. A prize of $500 is awarded for the ‘best cheese’ to the winning school and $250 is awarded for the winning multimedia advertisement. The ‘Big Day Out’ presentation day will be held on Tuesday, 1 September in Dingley Village. Dru Nash Food Technology teacher [email protected] Page 14 STAR OF THE SEA COLLEGE Fay Day! Green ribbons. Louder music. Even more chocolate. Fabulous fun. After all… It was Fay Day! Another fabulous Fay Walk! For the second consecutive year, we participated in a different kind of house assembly – enjoying a change of pace – with a welcome winter walk down to Elwood beach. Although Elwood had been a chilly 2°C earlier in the morning, we were greeted by the warm sun during our assembly period. Fay leaders – Lillian Lea, Grace Healey and Brenna Dempsey – waited patiently at Elwood Lifesaving Club. They gave the Fay girls and staff their choice of chocolate or strawberry milk and a heart-shaped cookie to replenish energy levels before we turned around and made our way back to Star. It was a simple leisurely stroll enjoyed by all with friends, staff and Fay girls in different year levels. Thank you to everyone who participated. Mali Booth Fay House Captain STAR OF THE SEA COLLEGE Page 15 Careers Night … Wednesday, 5 August Careers Night continues to be a highlight on the Star of the Sea College calendar. On Wednesday, 5 August, the annual event was, once again, an outstanding success. This is the biggest careers event organised by a single school in the Bayside region. One hundred and fifty consultants gave their time to the event. These consultants represented the full range of tertiary providers: from universities, TAFE institutes and the increasing number of private universities and colleges across the greater Melbourne region and interstate. There was one exception to this turnout: the University of Melbourne, despite numerous requests, did not support the event. Consultants were also drawn from the wider Star community. There are many past students who have completed their studies and came to share their experiences with students. They make up a huge part of the diversity of working professionals representing occupations across the spectrum: Law, Engineering, Science, Creative Arts, Commerce & Business, Health, Education, Media and many other areas that students have never even thought about! More than five hundred visitors attended the event, drawn from our senior students in Years 10, 11 and 12. Students who attended had strong support from their parents who were also a significant presence at the event. The success of Careers Night is obvious from the conversations that take place between students and consultants: the room was abuzz for the entire evening. Many consultants, especially the tertiary providers, were effusive in their praise of the high level of engagement of Star students and the excellent quality of their questions. The event comes together so well because of the fantastic support that the Star Careers Centre receives from the community. Student leaders recruited and led a team of student volunteers who were the face of the College as they greeted and assisted every consultant and visitor. College staff members assist every year and their presence is invaluable. Careers Night is a Star-community event in every sense of the word. It must be remembered that the most important aspect of this event is the benefit gained by the students. They have the chance to speak with real professionals about their careers and the vast range of options and possibilities that await them outside the College walls. The bonus is that they can do this within the security of their own College.
