In our Primary Classes, the children have geography
lessons. Geography is an important part of the

that Matters Most:
The Gift of
‘Everyday’

E
verybody has days they can
pin point with perfect clarity in
their mind. A birth, a marriage, the
passing of someone. On February
22, 2014 I was working. It was a cold
Saturday. It was 12:10 pm, just a
regular day. I looked up to see my
son’s pediatrician walk into the store
and just like that, in the snap of a
finger, the life I was living stopped. I
just didn’t know it quite yet.
I had just taken Colin to see
her the day before. For the past
two weeks, he had not been feeling well…
Headaches, a numb chin, no appetite, bleeding
gums and fatigue. He hadn’t been going to
school, not eating at all and just sleeping all
day. In fact, we had to put the mattress from
his loft bed on the floor; he just couldn’t climb
the ladder anymore. You know something is
wrong when your child’s pediatrician pops in
on you without first calling. It was then I was
told my 14-year-old son has Leukemia. A boy
that was hardly sick a day in his life; athletic
and involved in a multiple of sports with
organic foods, grass-fed beef and hormone-

free chicken in his regular diet. How is it even
possible that this can happen? We had just
been snowboarding the weekend before. I still
can’t breathe, literally, when I think of this day.
In a span of 10 days Colin went from a robust
teenager to a child that could die from a rare
and aggressive form of Leukemia.
We went from being a regular family to the
“other” family. You know the ones; you hear
of them and close your eyes and give thanks
it is not your child, your child is safe. I badly
wanted that feeling back. The feeling of living
without doubt or concern. Of going back to
living with confidence and that naiveté that
exists that bad things won’t happen to my
family, it only happens to other families.
Since February, Colin has completed 8
rounds of aggressive and highly intense
chemotherapy. He has 14 prescriptions in
the medicine cabinet. During Colin’s first
125 days of treatment, 94 of those days were
spent overnight at CHOP, too sick to be home
and – on most days – barely able to get out of
bed. He endured 18 spinal taps and 3 bone
marrow aspirates. Tests, too numerous to even
remember them all. He lost over 30 pounds,
got a feeding tube and became dependent
upon a wheelchair. All of his beautiful, thick
blonde hair fell out.
Only now, am I truly understanding that we
could have lost him. During the hardest part
of his battle, we were not aware of how ill
everydayness of, well, every day. There is the
gift of understanding that ‘bad’ can be ‘worse’.
And if given the chance, I will always take the
‘bad’, not the ‘worst’. Or how about the gift
of getting to spend countless hours with my
teenage son who on a typical day before he
was sick, mostly grunted at me as a form of
communication on the way to the kitchen.
It’s a new gift, to not worry about the little
things anymore. Why did I ever worry about
how much Parmesan cheese he put on his
pizza? The most amazing gift was getting a rare
glimpse into the man Colin will become: witty,
intelligent, articulate, caring, optimistic and so
very strong. It was a gift to me, from my son,
to learn to be a stronger, more grateful person.
he was; for you see, when you have a child
close to dying you are only intensely focused
on survival… no other possibility exists. It
is every parent’s nightmare, being required
to repeatedly poison their child so that they
have a chance to live. It goes against our
parenting grain, so to speak, to deliberately
chose to make your child ill, lose weight, stop
eating, vomit often, have open sores, become
depressed, lose hope, stop going to school,
and put them at risk of multiple infections.
There is no choice, for on the other side of that
choice is your baby losing their life.
Life is different now. Colin has a 10-year
follow up plan. Every month for 2 years he will
be tested for relapse. In 2017, his Oncologist
will begin to discuss survivorship with him, put
a life plan together and teach him to overcome
all the damage that has been done to his
body though the intense chemo he received.
‘Cancer’ will never leave our lives and our lives
are forever changed; we will always live in its
shadow. I am no longer naïve, thinking that
things happen to “other” people and not to us.
It has been absolute hell.

many children are not home celebrating with
their family. This holiday season, I am just so
very grateful for the absolute greatest gifts of
all; the possibility to have beaten cancer, be at
home with family and unwrap the wonder of
the season together.
The author, Melissa, is so very thankful for all
of the gifts both Colin and his younger brother,
William, have given her. The gift of hope, the
gift of optimism, the gift of a smile… This
holiday, she’s slowly unwrapping all of these gifts
while counting her many blessings.
So this holiday season, I am going to take all
of these gifts and participate with my family. I
know we all think we participate, but do we?
I am not going to have a list, or try to top last
year, or worry if everything is perfect. I will
not put emptying the dishwasher, cleaning,
laundry, ensuring gifts are perfectly wrapped
or shopping for material items soon to be
forgotten, ahead of ‘participating’ with my
family. I will put that all aside to go sit with
my children, to ask them “what do you want
to do” and to participate in doing it, even if we
have already done it 100 times.
Because of Colin, I have realized my
mistakes… believing I always had another day
ahead of me and racing from one moment to
the next. We all have so many gifts. We just
have to unwrap them. This holiday, I know the

Usually each holiday season arrives and the
words ‘holidays’ and ‘exhaustion’ become
synonymous. This year, I seem to have a new
clarity, for with Colin’s battle came many
opportunities. And if you are open to searching
– to hunting for the good in a very bad
situation – it is just possible that you will find
many new, unexpected gifts that were never on
your Christmas wish list.
It is a gift to realize how wasteful I had been of
normal, ‘everyday’ days. Complaining about
laundry or cooking meals. What a wonderful
part of life ho-hum days are! Send me grocery
shopping, bring on the homework! Knowing
the alternative now has made me treasure the

Ever ART at the EVERHART
The Everhart Museum has partnered with the Northeastern
Educational Intermediate Unit to offer everart @ the EVERHART
for elementary students (grades 3-5) and middle school
students (grades 6-8). On one Saturday morning a month
from now until June 2015, students will work with artists from
the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts to create wonderful
works of art. Disciplines include: painting, sculpture, mixed
media, installation, illustration, dance, theater and poetry.
Each session is $5 per child and is held from 10am to Noon.
