The education of our youth, the development of hockey on Long Island, and bringing awareness and support to many different health issues facing children are all supported by our programming. The accomplishments of the Islanders off the ice are the result of a dedicated group of individuals including ownership, management, players and their families, front office staff and the generous contributions of our loyal fans and supportive team sponsors. The New York Islanders are proud to be a part of the Long Island community and will continue to work diligently to touch the lives of those around us by implementing programs, special events and fan development initiatives. ISLANDERS CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION HISTORY & MISSION T he Islanders Children’s Foundation is a New York State not-for-profit foundation, qualified under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code and qualified as a public charity. Since its inception in 2003, the Islanders Children’s Foundation has raised more than $5 million to help countless children on Long Island and around the world. Mission The Islanders Children’s Foundation is dedicated to supporting Long Island based non-profit organizations that provide opportunities to children. The Foundation also works on a variety of in-house youth programming. The Foundation will work with children’s charities that focus on the areas of health, education and youth hockey development. Donations are raised for the foundation through the tireless efforts of Islanders players, employees and management, partnered with the support of loyal sponsors and fans. The Islanders Children’s Foundation raises awareness and funds through a variety of charitable initiatives during the course of the NHL season, including the Islanders Annual Golf Outing, ICF Day at Adventureland and Casino Night. Special 4 I COMMUNITY IN REVIEW fundraisers during Islanders games provide additional donations for the ICF. These fundraisers include the 50/50 raffle, Chuck-A-Puck, Jerseys off the Back, St. Patrick’s Day Jersey Auction, Valentine’s Day Puck Surprise, Holiday Grab Bag and Pink Stick Auction, among many others. The Islanders are true believers in the youth that surround us everyday. Our team believes that every child only needs the right opportunities to help them become successful in life. We also see the hardships that surround many families on Long Island, whether a loved one is suffering from illness or the economy has taken a toll on them; these people require support from everyone in the community to make Long Island a better place and the Islanders want to help lead those efforts. The Islanders Children’s Foundation works with other charities and funds a variety of in-house youth programs. The Islanders@ School Program, Holiday Hospital Visits and Toy Shopping Event, “Bossy’s Bunch” Charity Ticket Program, Amateur Youth Hockey Development Program and Islanders Fight Cancer were all created to benefit the youth of Long Island. It’s more about the kids. Helping out the kids is all that really matters at the end of the day. COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 5 ICF PROGRAMMING Bossy’s Bunch Islanders Hall of Famer Mike Bossy, along with generous donations from Islanders fans and sponsors to the ICF, have donated seats for sick, recovering and underprivileged children so they are able to experience Islanders games throughout the season. It’s always a special moment for me to meet them and bring them to some games. Mike Bossy, Hall of Famer COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 7 Holiday Hospital Visits & Toy Shopping Event The annual Islanders Holiday Hospital Visits have become a long-standing tradition for the organization. On this day, all Islanders players visit children who are receiving treatment at various Long Island hospitals. During these visits, the players provide each child with toys that were personally picked out by members of the team at their annual toy shopping event the week prior. This past season, Emblem Health sponsored the events, contributing funds to the Islanders Children’s Foundation for the program. Hospitals that we visited: Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center Good Samaritan Hospital Henry Viscardi School: The National Center for Disabilities Nassau University Medical Center St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital Stony Brook University Hospital Winthrop University Hospital: Cancer Center for Kids There were a lot of interesting kids out there with some wild imaginations and they were real fun to talk to. It’s great to put a smile on their faces. Matt Moulson, Forward COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 9 ISLANDERS @ SCHOOL Islanders@School The Islanders visited more than 50 schools throughout the 2011-12 season The Islanders @School program brings the game of hockey to elementary school classrooms, allowing teachers to educate students with a creative approach while working under the New York State Curriculum. The @School program incorporates fun-filled lesson plans and special assembly programs, including Islanders School Day and the “We’re All Islanders and We’re All Committed” school assembly. These events teach students the importance of teamwork, staying healthy, a good education and hard work. New to the @School program during the 2011-12 season were online lesson plans for Science and Health Studies. More than 95,000 children participated in the @School program this past season. The organization believes it is important to show children across Long Island that these are the most fundamental building blocks in life. This assembly allows students to learn these vital life lessons from professional athletes. This past season the Islanders School Day assembly was run as a ticket fundraiser contest for schools. During the 2011-2012 season, more than 2,000 students participated in the program. It’s a real honor to get to go out and have that kind of reception from kids and teachers. It was a really enjoyable thing we get to do as professional athletes. Rick DiPietro, Goalie The assembly was amazing. The players were so personable. They shared great stories. It was a terrific job. Gary Levitan, Teacher COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 11 PLAYER PROGRAMS G iving back to the community has always been an integral part of the Islanders commitment to Long Island. The 2011-12 season was no different. Several players took part in or created their own charitable programs to help benefit the Island’s various communities. From ill and underprivileged children to military veterans, the players showed their compassion, dedication and commitment in numerous ways this past season. Michael Grabner & Kyle Okposo’s Charity Goal Program Islanders forwards Michael Grabner and Kyle Okposo combined their scoring efforts during the 2011-2012 season and created their own charity goal program. For each goal that both Okposo and Grabner scored during the season, each player donated $300. The Austrian-American connection combined for 44 goals and a total donation of over $26,000 to the Islanders Children’s Foundation. I thought it was time I did a little something more right here on Long Island and that’s what we came up with. The ICF is a great charity and does great work, so hopefully we can finish this year strong and help them out a bit and we’ll do it again next year. Kyle Okposo, Forward COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 13 Bailey’s Buddies Program Islanders forward Josh Bailey kicked off the second season of his Bailey’s Buddies program at the start of the 2011-12 season. At each home game, Bailey hosted a child recovering from illness or an underprivileged child for a once-in-alifetime, VIP experience. During the game, Bailey’s Buddy sits near the Islanders on-ice entrance, high-fives the players as they walk onto the ice, receives an Islanders gift bag with a Bailey t-shirt and meets Josh after the game. Bailey signs autographs, takes pictures and sometimes tours the locker room with his Buddy. They get to see a lot of the guys, get some autographs and kind of get the whole post-game experience. I think they really enjoy it. Whether we win or lose, it’s very nice. They tend to brighten you up after a game. As much as they enjoy it, I take a lot out of it, too. Josh Bailey, Forward We are grateful to the Islanders for taking the time, not just for my family, but for the hundreds of families that have to endure this horrible disease. Lennie Blades, father of a Bailey’s Buddy COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 15 Matt Moulson’s Charity Goal Program We really wanted to help the organization because it’s something very important, especially with the people who serve the country and serve all of us. Matt Moulson, Forward Islanders forward Matt Moulson continued his charity goal program for the second consecutive season. Through Moulson’s 326 Foundation, a donation was made on his behalf to the Islanders Children’s Foundation. With a third consecutive 30-goal season, Moulson donated over $17,000 to the ICF. Matt Moulson’s Wounded Warrior Program Moulson created a special partnership with the Wounded Warrior Project during the 2011-2012 season. For each home game during the season, the Islanders winger hosted a “Wounded Warrior” and family member. The veteran was treated to a VIP experience, recognized on the scoreboard during the game and also met Moulson following the game. This was five million times better than I thought. Here I am 41-years old and I feel like I’m 10 again. I’ve got goosebumps everywhere. Moulson Wounded Warrior, 1st Sgt. John Camacho COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 17 John Tavares Charity Ticket Program Islanders forward John Tavares started his own charity program at the beginning of the 2011-2012 season. At every home game, Tavares hosted an underprivileged child or one recovering from illness for a unique, once-in-a-lifetime, VIP experience. During the game, JT’s special guest sits behind the player bench, high-fives the players as they step onto the ice, receives an Islanders gift and meets John after the game. John signs autographs for and takes pictures with all of his guests. It’s great to spend some time with the kids, see them smile and bring up their spirits a bit. And to see the joy on their faces, that’s the best part. John Tavares, All-Star Forward Thank you very much for the wonderful night, Mr. Tavares. I had such a great time at the game and meeting you was something I’ll always remember. One of John Tavares’ Special Guests COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 19 Matt Martin’s Defending the Blue Line Program Islanders forward Matt Martin started a partnership with Defending the Blue Line for the 2011-2012 season. For each home game during the season, the Islanders forward hosted a veteran and one of their family members from Defending the Blue Line. Following each game, Matt takes the time to meet his guests, sign autographs, get to know them and take them around the locker room area. Mr. Martin was so nice and pleasant to talk to. He signed a ton of autographs for us. As we were walking out to the parking lot, Mr. Martin ran up the stairs and gave my son his game hockey stick. It was an honor meeting him and he brightened the life of a little boy who misses his father dearly. T., parent Melissa and participant I wanted to do something charity-wise. These people sacrifice their lives for us and scarifice their lives for our freedom so this was a great fit. You hear some of the things they’ve gone through and you appreciate so much what they do. Matt Martin, Forward COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 21 22 I C O M M U N I T Y I N R E V I E W FOUNDATION EVENTS E ach season, the Islanders hold a number of major events to help raise substantial monetary donations for the ICF. The 2011-12 season saw the team continue fan favorite events such as its annual Golf Outing and Islanders Day at Adventureland, while launching its first-ever Casino Night. These events allowed fans to meet and spend time with members of the team off the ice, while contributing important donations to the Children’s Foundation. It’s great to see all the fans at these events because we’re helping a very good cause in the Children’s Foundation. It’s really nice that they continue to come support us here and at our games. Josh Bailey, Forward As hockey players, we are really fortunate. Our profession is our hobby. So it’s great to give back because the kids are our future. This is a great thing. Mark Streit, Captain COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 23 24 I C O M M U N I T Y I N R E V I E W Annual Golf Outing The annual ICF Golf Outing gives fans the opportunity to spend the day with some of their favorite Islanders, past and present. Players, coaches and alumni hit the links with foursomes of fans at a prestigious Long Island golf course prior to the start of training camp every September. Bethpage Red has hosted this fundraising event for the past two seasons and helped the Islanders raise more than $80,000 at the 2011-2012 season outing. Golf is a great social game. It’s a locker room atmosphere and something I’m used to. I’m excited about being here. Doug Weight, Senior Advisor to the General Manager and Assistant Coach For us to come out here, it’s a beautiful day, not only to meet people but for the great cause as well. I’m getting a great opportunity as people come by to talk to them. The dialogue has been real good between myself and the golfers coming through. They seem to really be enjoying themselves. Jack Capuano, Head Coach COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 25 26 I C O M M U N I T Y I N R E V I E W ANNUAL DAY AT ADVENTURELAND ICF Day at Adventureland brings the entire Islanders roster up close and personal to the fans on the weekend before the regular season begins. Players sit at autograph tables throughout the park, take pictures, speak with fans and hop on select rides with kids in the crowd. Fans that attend the event have complete access to Adventureland Amusement Park for the entire day. The team raised more than $15,000 at the 2011-12 ICF Day event. Not only are the players excited for the season, but the fans are as well. It’s important to show the fans how much they mean to us. So it’s good to meet our fans and give them an opportunity to meet the players. It’s great to see all the Islanders jerseys and the t-shirts. You can feel the excitemet. Today is going great. It’s exciting to be here. It’s great to see the fans that support us all year long. Nino Niederreiter, Forward Mark Streit, Captain COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 27 28 I C O M M U N I T Y I N R E V I E W CAsino Night This is a great event. To see all the fans come out and support us and the Children’s Foundation is really special and it means a lot to us all. John Tavares, Forward The Islanders held their first-ever Casino Night on February 1, 2012. Islanders fans had a chance to try their luck at popular casino games like Blackjack, Poker and Roulette, while mingling with members of the Islanders. This fun-filled evening featured games, auctions and other great prizes in addition to the casino. The ICF raised more than $120,000 at the inaugural event. I had a great time with everyone. These fans are wonderful and it’s just real fun talking to them and playing the games with them. Nino Niederreiter, Forward COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 29 30 I C O M M U N I T Y I N R E V I E W Winter Wear Wonderland The Islanders held an exclusive third jersey launch party inside the brand new Islanders Team Store at the beginning of their 2011-2012 season. Special VIP’s that attended were treated to a fashion show by Islanders players and their families, after which they met players in attendance. All funding from this event went directly to the Islanders Children’s Foundation. If you couldn’t tell, (modeling) came pretty nautral to me. My wife was a little shy. I don’t think she has a future in it. She’s pretty, but I don’t think she’s got the runway personality. I might take the cake in our relationship on that one. The kids were absolutely adorable. It was a real family event. There were so many kids here at the event so it’s nice the players brought their kids along also. Each stick is wrapped in Breast Cancer Awareness hockey tape and personally given to the highest bidders after a selected game. The team raised more than $7,000 through the Pink Stick Auction last season. For a small donation, fans can place their names on speciallydesigned pieces of paper that are posted on the Coliseum walls, creating a collage of support for cancer awareness as it also helps contribute funding. More than 950 people added their names to the Islanders Fight Cancer Wall last year. Each season the NHL provides every team in the league with a grant to support local cancer organizations in their market. During the 2011-2012 season, the Islanders donated $5,000 to the Hematology and Oncology Department at Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center thanks to this grant from the NHL. Stick Kids Cotton Candy Fundraiser Movember Throughout the course of the month, select Long Island children recovering from or undergoing treatment for cancer are chosen to attend an Islanders game and sit on the team bench during warmups. Children undergoing treatment at the following locations have been invited to participate: Cotton Candy is a fan favorite at Nassau Coliseum. During HFC Month, one dollar from every pink cotton candy sold went toward the Islanders Fight Cancer initiative. This past season, the pink treats raised over $1,800 to help fight cancer. More than half of the Islanders joined the Movember movement and grew a mustache during the month of November in an effort to raise funding and awareness for Prostate Cancer and other men’s health issues. The Islanders team, led by star winger Matt Moulson, raised more than $10,000 in an effort to eliminate these terrible diseases. For the ChuckA-Puck contest, foam pucks are sold, which fans later throw at a center ice bulls-eye during intermission. Just like the 50/50 Raffle, the winning fan receives a portion of the funds generated, with the other portion benefiting the ICF. COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 35 36 I C O M M U N I T Y I N R E V I E W Love for Lokomotiv National Center for Missing and Exploited Children On September 7, 2011, 44 lives were lost in the greatest tragedy in professional hockey history. A plane carrying crew members, hockey personnel, coaches and players of the Yaroslavl Lokomotiv hockey team crashed, breaking the hearts of their loved ones both near and far. Many players and coaches had close ties to a number of NHL clubs. In a united effort to show support for the grieving families, all NHL teams sold “Love for Lokomotiv” bracelets. The Islanders raised more than $8,000 for Lokomotiv’s families throughout the course of the season. The Islanders teamed up with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for a special fundraising night this past season. More than $25,000 was raised through tickets sales and fundraising opportunities over the course of the game. Islanders Owner Charles Wang matched all donations raised throughout the course of the evening, generating a donation of more than $50,000 that went to help support the programs of the National Center so we can continue to keep our children safe. Smile Train Smile Train believes every child born with a cleft anywhere in the world has the opportunity to live a full, productive life. This is a major problem in developing countries where there are millions of children who are suffering with unrepaired clefts. Most cannot eat or speak properly. They aren’t allowed to attend school or hold a job. They face very difficult lives filled with shame, isolation, pain and heartache. Their clefts usually go untreated because they are too poor to pay for a simple surgery that has existed for decades. This is where Smile Train comes in. This season the Islanders teamed up with Smile Train to help raise awareness and funding for the non-profit so that all children can one day smile. You can’t discount the importance of children. Whatever we can do for them, we have to. They’re our treasures. Charles Wang, Owner and Governor COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 37 38 I C O M M U N I T Y I N R E V I E W AUCTIONS & RAFFLES Halloween Basket Raffle Every player creates a Halloween basket with their favorite candy, scary movies and autographed memorabilia. Each basket is raffled off to fans during a select game in October. Last season, the team raised more than $3,000 for the ICF with this unique raffle. Holiday Grab Bag During the Islanders Holiday Grab Bag, fans are invited to make a nominal donation to the ICF and in return, they can choose an item from the grab bag. Islanders tickets, autographed pucks and limited edition merchandise are a few of the items contained in the Holiday Grab Bags. Last season, the team raised more than $2,500 from this initiative. Valentine’s Day Puck Surprise This mystery puck donation game allows fans the opportunity to win autographed Islanders pucks. Each puck is wrapped so fans cannot see which player’s signature they are receiving. If a fan receives an unsigned puck, they are able to meet the player after that game to have their puck signed. The sale of all pucks benefit the ICF and last season the team raised more than $4,500. Military Jersey Auction and Puck Surprise During the Islanders annual Military Appreciation Game played in November, players wear camouflage jerseys during pre-game warm-ups as one way of saluting our troops at home and abroad. After the game, those jerseys are auctioned online to benefit the ICF. Last season’s camouflage jerseys raised more than $6,000. During the game, mystery pucks are also sold and last year they raised an additional $2,000. St. Patrick’s Day Jersey Auction When the Islanders host a home game around St. Patrick’s Day, the team unveils a set of warm-up jerseys that are inspired by the holiday. Designed with Gaelic letters, these collectible jerseys are a hot auction item for Islanders fans and last season they raised more than $10,000 for the ICF. Jerseys Off the Back In the month leading up to Fan Appreciation Day, fans can bid online for their favorite Islanders jersey. After the final buzzer, players present their jerseys to the winners on the ice. The 2011-12 finale raised more than $23,000 for the ICF and created some everlasting memories for 25 lucky fans. COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 39 40 I C O M M U N I T Y I N R E V I E W ICF Donations T he contributions during the 2011-12 season could not have been possible without the community members and businesses of Long Island. The Islanders and Islanders Children’s Foundation would like to send a special thank you to the following people and groups for their generosity throughout the season. With all of your help, the Islanders achieved another highly charitable season. The things I enjoy most are with the younger kids. The following players made appearances throughout the summer months: Matt Moulson, Josh Bailey, Andrew MacDonald, Matt Martin, Rick DiPietro, Michael Grabner, Frans Nielsen, John Tavares, Kevin Poulin and Nino Niederreiter. The kids were really excited and I remember how excited I was when I was their age. They just like to have some fun. Their dream is to play in the NHL one day, so anything you can do to push them along that way and keep them involved in sports is a good thing. Matt Martin, Forward It’s great to be able to meet the fans who come out to the rink every night and are cheering you on. I’ve heard nothing but encouraging things from them at these events, which is really important. Andrew MacDonald, Defenseman COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 49 50 I C O M M U N I T Y I N R E V I E W DRAFT PARTY DRAFT PARTY (JUNE 22, 2012) The Islanders held their annual Draft Party on Friday, June 22. More than 7,000 Islanders fans came to the Coliseum to meet some of their favorite Islanders players and alumni. They eagerly awaited the Islanders to announce their 2012 first-round draft pick. Islanders players Matt Moulson, Matt Martin, Kevin Poulin, and Nino Niederreiter, along with many top prospects were in attendance to meet fans. I thought it was really cool to see where they get ready and prepared for games and where they go when they get hurt. Also seeing all the plaques honoring past players and the jerseys of current players was really an experience. Domenic Rizzotti, 13-year-old Isles fan It’s almost like the atmosphere of a game. Everyone’s walking around excited awaiting the draft and enjoying all that there is to do. Martin Bush, Longtime Isles fan COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 51 52 I C O M M U N I T Y I N R E V I E W I.C.E. TOUR islanders community events tour (i.c.e. tour) The New York Islanders I.C.E. Tour is an interactive NHL theme park geared towards younger fans, bringing hockey to Long Island 365 days every year. This grassroots marketing campaign attends local schools, community festivals, hockey rinks, local charity events and other popular functions. Throughout the course of the year, the I.C.E. Tour attends more than 300 events on Long Island. It’s a lot of fun to meet people who support this tem and support the players. It’s something I enjoy. Matt Moulson, Forward Some people get a little distanced from these events and don’t realize what things like this mean to (the fans). It means a lot to me to see the fans and see people who support me every night. Matt Martin, Forward COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 53 54 I C O M M U N I T Y I N R E V I E W ISLANDERS KIDS CLUB kids club The New York Islanders Kids Club is geared for fans 14 and younger who are looking to become a member of the New York Islanders team. Available at three levels, fans are given team news updates, promotional merchandise, exclusive discounts to the team store and tickets to upcoming games. Since its re-launch in 2008, more than 14,000 children have enrolled and are currently in the program. We’re blessed to have the opportunity to help these kids out. They go through a lot of struggles that we can’t even begin to comprehend. Those smiles and good times might be tough to come by, so it’s really great to be able to bring that out in them. Casey Cizikas, Forward These kids don’t get a chance to do something like this very often. If I can put a smile on a kid’s face and help them have a great time on the ice.... It’s definitely a very rewarding feeling to help them out. Ty Wishart, Defenseman COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 55 56 I C O M M U N I T Y I N R E V I E W COMMUNITY PROGRAMS TD Bank HOMETOWn hero food drives rock and wrap it up The New York Islanders and TD Bank created the Hometown Hero to pay recognition to local community members that have gone above and beyond to help an individual or the community in which we all live. The Hometown Hero is invited to come to an Islanders game and receives in-game recognition. Last year, the Islanders and TD Bank honored six hometown heroes. Each season the Islanders collect food for the hungry across Long Island by holding food drives throughout the year. The Islanders proudly partnered with Island Harvest for two food drives before and after the Thanksgiving holiday this past season. coat drives The New York Islanders continue to fight Long Island’s battle with hunger by partnering with Rock and Wrap it Up. All unused food following Islanders games is donated to local food banks. The first NHL team to participate in this program, the Islanders were recognized by the EPA in 2011 for their efforts in feeding the hungry. welcome home veterans The Islanders are proud to recognize local military personnel who actively serve or have served our country. These heroes protect America and represent all Long Islanders. During every Islanders home game, a different veteran is honored and recognized in front of the entire crowd. Each season the Islanders collect coats during the winter months to help the less fortunate stay warm. The Islanders partnered with Burlington Coat Factory’s “One Warm Coat” campaign for the second consecutive season holding coat drives throughout the month of January. More than 800 coats were collected and donated to the less fortunate. TOY DRIVEs Each season the Islanders help collect toys for the less fortunate by holding toy drives during the holiday season. The Islanders partnered with the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots Program last season, collecting toys for underprivileged and sick children. The team also held their own annual toy drive in December, just prior to the Christmas holiday. zebra’s care The National Hockey League Officials Association launched “Zebra’s Care” during the 2007- 2008 season. Zebra’s Care was created to bring joy to children across North America and to grow the great game of hockey. This program provides the opportunity for underprivileged and sick children to meet many NHLOA members and to attend a NHL game. During the game, children are invited to meet the officials before the game and go on a backstage tour of the arena. COMMUNITY IN REVIEW | 57 YOUTH HOCKEY AMATEUR HOCKEY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM A mateur hockey development has been a major focus on Long Island since the Islanders were founded in 1972. In those 40 years, the development programs have grown exponentially. Today, there are year-round clinics to teach kids of all ages how to ice skate and play hockey. The Islanders also help to develop youth hockey on an international level by hosting foreign teams for a tournament at Nassau Coliseum every January and by sending Long Island pee-wee players to a world-renowned tournament in Quebec City. The Islanders are committed to growing the sport of hockey on Long Island and around the world and these programs, funded by the ICF, are the building blocks of that growth. Try Hockey For Free Day Hockey is for Everyone The Islanders support USA Hockey’s effort to grow the game of hockey in the United States. As part of this initiative, the Islanders hosted Try Hockey For Free Day this past November. This initiative was started by USA Hockey in order to develop and grow the sport within our country from the ground up. Forty non-players took the ice for the first time over the course of two 30-minute sessions. Participants received loaner equipment and instruction from USA Hockey Certified coaches. Islanders Youth Hockey Jamboree Islanders Hockey Academy Entering its third year, the Islanders Hockey Academy continues to provide entry-level hockey players, ages 6-14, with the opportunity to be introduced to the game of ice hockey. Participants in the program receive full equipment, instruction and ice time. Players that participate in the program enjoy visits from current Islanders players and/or coaches at their on-ice sessions, too. 58 I C O M M U N I T Y I N R E V I E W The Islanders are proud to support the NHL’s Hockey is for Everyone initiative. The Islanders have a variety of programs that cater to hockey players of all types and abilities. The organization believes that everyone who wants to participate in the game of hockey should have that chance. Every year, the Islanders host several youth hockey tournaments geared toward local in-house teams on Long Island. The Jamboree is a day-long event that features cross-ice games for mini-mite and mite teams. This past season the Islanders Jamboree was held in November in conjunction with USA Hockey’s Come Play Hockey Month. Jr. Islanders New York Islanders House League Tournament The Jr. Islanders are made up of elite 11- and 12-year-old hockey players from Long Island. The team is selected through a tryout and coached by former Islanders Benoit Hogue and Bob Nystrom. The team participates in the annual Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament held each February at Pepsi Colisee in Quebec City. The tournament, considered by many as the biggest pee-wee hockey tournament in the world, groups more than 2,300 young athletes from 16 countries to participate in the World Championship of pee-wee hockey. Squirt, Pee Wee and Bantam level players competed for the chance of their young lives over the course of November 2011, in the Islanders first ever house league tournament. Teams competed at various rinks across Long Island in a round robin tournament. The Championship games were then played on the Nassau Coliseum ice. More than 200,000 fans annually attend the 11-day tournament that was founded in 1960. Many stars from the National Hockey League have passed through this tournament, including current Islanders players Rick DiPietro and Kyle Okposo, as well as Senior Advisor to the General Manager and Assistant Coach, Doug Weight. Special Hockey The Islanders are also proud supporters of Special Hockey programs on Long Island. Partnering with NY State’s Special Hockey Program, the Islanders were able to create Special Hockey Day, which saw sled hockey teams and developmentally disabled teams play on the Coliseum ice for the second consecutive year. Teams that participated in the event: The American SledNew York Raptors Hockey Association East Coast Jumbos Long Island Blues Nova Coolcats Fearless Flyers Bucks County Admirals Project Hope The ultimate goal of Project Hope is to provide young athletes with access to educational opportunities. Project Hope creates opportunities for cultural exchange through international youth hockey events and by promoting Project Hope scholarship placements in the United States. Lighthouse International Tournament In conjunction with Charles B. Wang’s Project Hope, the Islanders annually host an international youth hockey tournament. The Islanders hosted the 5th Annual Lighthouse International Youth Hockey Tournament in January 2012. Teams representing Finland and Japan played against American squads from Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester counties. In addition to playing tournament games, teams also participated in an international skills competition. The tournament gives children the unique multi-cultural experience of interacting with other youth hockey players from around the world.
