Varsity Football - Head Coach, Vic Tribuzio The 2015 Ramsey Football team had a successful campaign. The boys gave of themselves tirelessly in the attempt to achieve team goals. The boys were lead by captains Jake Gursaly and Don Donovan. The coaching staff could not be more proud of this group of young men and the effort they put forth all season. The boys managed to earn a 6-4 record and a divisional championship. These were two goals set forth by the group in July when they began working to prepare. The team earned the respect of their opponents through their tough play. The Rams team oriented football. With no outright star to rely upon it was necessary to combine all the athletic assets in order to win football games. The Rams compiled 2500 yards of rushing offense through the efforts of five running backs. Additionally the Rams threw the ball for 1100 yards while similarly spreading the receptions among several players. The Rams ended the season strong with two wins in order to secure a winning season. The young men that contributed to the varsity season success are as follows: Dan DeAngelis, Thomas Feehan, Chris Blasius, Chris Frohlich, Adam Reisfield, Mike Cassella, Brendan Mahon, Matt Pesco, Mario Ferraro, Joe Kalksma, Tye Baruffaldi, Dan Donovan, Thomas Scanlon, Byron Zabala, Ryan Scialla, Joe Martinez, Bryan Duncan, Matt Lowery, Thomas McCormick, Ross Woods, Tim Finnegan, Jake Gursaly, Matt Spagnoletti, Marc Tarabocchia, Anthony Ascione, Sean Donnelly, Ayden Yi, Jeff Klepper, James O’Keefe, and Anthony Monianci. #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 JV Football - Mike Fanning, Sal Montevago and Scott Tireman The 2015 JV Football team had a highly successful year. Most people would assume that means many victories. Although the JV team did have a winning season, their success is based on achieving and exceeding team goals. The most important goal of any team is to get better as the season progresses. Although there may have been a couple of occasions where we may have taken a step back, to a person by years end, each athlete demonstrated growth as a player. That is a testament to dedication and hard work throughout the course of the year. It isn’t easy to be a JV player. Much of the team portion of practice is dedicated to preparation for the Varsity game. Our younger players need to get the most out of the individual technique portion of practice and by using the look team as their time to work on their skills. We as a staff are very proud of our boys and encourage them all to put in the necessary off-season time to develop their strength and agility to allow them to compete for a Varsity position in 2016. The JV team included: 2 4 10 11 15 17 20 23 24 26 36 42 44 46 54 55 59 60 63 64 66 69 74 75 77 78 79 80 81 83 88 Nick Rotonda Dan DeAngelis Michael Feehan Chris Frohlich Michael Mulryan Matt Fowler Ryan Mahon Donald Wilson Matt Pesco Joe Kalksma Rob Sciubba Joe Martinez David Umana Joe Fletcher Tim Ryan Bryan Duncan Ralph Caputo David Hulsizer Max Ivry Charles Pekmezian Joe Nissan Ross Woods Jason Bonilla Matt Spagnoletti Burhan Khawaja Conor Cronin Anthony Monianci Anthony Ascione Chris Salazer Zacharia Najem Jeff Klepper WR/DB K/P QB/DB RB/LB WR/DB WR/DB RB/DB WR/DB Soph Soph Soph Soph Soph Soph Soph Soph RB/DB RB/DB WR/DB TE/LB WR/ WR/DB L/L L/L L/L L/L L/L L/L L/L L/L L/L L/L L/L L/L L/L WR/DB WR/DB WR/DB WR/DB Soph Junior Junior Junior Soph Soph Junior Junior Soph Junior Soph Junior Soph Junior Soph Junior Soph Soph Junior Junior Soph Junior Junior #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 89 99 Andrew Ratto Terrell Bailey TE/L WR/DB Soph Junior Freshman Football- Chris Caserta The 2015 Freshman Football team had a successful season to say the least. The team finished with an 8-1 record and out-scored their opponents 257-60 on the season. After suffering an opening day loss, the team rallied to win its next 8 in a row to complete the season. There were many players who made countless contributions to the team. On offense, Cooper Mandel led the “Tavo-no-huddle” attack, accounting for over 1,200 yards and 19 total touchdowns. The offense allowed for multiple players to produce stats and the players did. Stephen Lowery rushed for over 700 yards and punched in 6 touchdowns while his back mates Nick Laino and Matt Biondi tallied 150 yards of rushing/receiving and 3 touchdowns themselves. On the receiving end, Kevin Foelsch and Jake Haner proved to be huge weapons in the passing attack as they combined for 21 receptions, over 380 yards and 8 touchdowns between them. The team prided itself on toughness and execution and there was no better example of that then our O-line which was made up of Luke Cataldo, Vinny Bernier, Ryan Galperin, John Hillman, and Logan Young. This unit helped our team rush for over 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns. On the defensive side Andrew Reisfield performed well as our safety getting us in the correct defenses and leading the team in interceptions. The freshman team had a lot of success due to a great group effort in practice and in the games. Players like Jake Zuza, Bradyn Rybacki, Kevin Morfit, Jack Duggan, Alex Trim, Andy Beltran, Nick Saros, Matt Biondi, Jake Reczkowski and even the injured Alexis Hernandez and Paul Minetti helped the team immensely throughout the season. Varsity Boys Soccer - Head Coach, Jaime Phillips The 2015 Ramsey High School Boys Varsity Soccer Team had a great season, and one that was not totally expected. After losing 12 seniors to graduation, 7 of whom were starters, the expectations for this season were more in line with a team that was rebuilding. This year’s seniors, and the team as a whole, had other plans which they began to implement at the beginning of last June. Continuing the traditions of hard work, dedication, commitment, selflessness and family that the program has instilled in them, the team set out on a mission to win the division, get the top spot in the state tournament and if all went well win the whole thing. While they may have fallen just short of a state championship, losing in a 9 round shoot-out in the sectional championship game, their accomplishments for a team that lost so much to graduation are nothing short of spectacular. The 2015 team went 15-3-1, scored 54 #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 goals while giving up just 19 in 19 games, won the Big North Patriot Division for the 6th time in the 7-year history of the league, qualified for the county tournament, got the top spot in the state tournament, and made a run to the North I Group II State Sectional Championship game for the 3rd year in a row. Largely responsible for the low goals against this season was the play of our defense and goalkeepers. In net, starting every game this season was Braden Miller (Jr, 8 shutouts, 82 saves), while Josh Schwartz (So, 6 saves) who put in double time as a part-time JV starter and varsity back up, but gained valuable experience. On defense was Zach Rauch (Jr), Ryan Vatcher (Jr, 1G, 9A), Harry Illes (Sr, Capt, 1 G) Matt Fox (So, 1A), and Brian Long (Jr, 1A). With the exception of senior captain Harry Illes, this entire group returns next season to try and improve on the results of 2015. Providing the connection between the defense and offense was our midfield, our workhorses. Our midfield provided solid defense and accounted for over ½ our teams scoring. Making up our midfield was 4-year starter Sam Berman (Sr, Capt, 9G, 6A), 3-year starter Mike Cirilli (Sr, Capt, 15G, 5A), Declan Rybacki (Jr, 2G, 3A), Sean Finnegan (So, 2G, 1A), Tommy Fatuova (Jr, 2G), Dan Botta (Jr, 1G), Aiden Neeson (So, 1A), and Sean Connolly (Fr, 2A). Our offense provided the team with many exciting moments and a quick strike ability. With a good deal of depth on offense we had the luxury of varying our attack on a day-to-day basis. On offense was Christian Tesoriero (Jr, Capt, 11G, 1A), Jacob Berkofsky (Sr, 4G, 1A) Sean Kopcynski (Sr), James Messina (Sr, 2G, 1A), Kyle Pacenza (Sr, 1A), Alex Sebastiano (Sr, 1G, 2A), Paul Wheaton (So, 1G, 1A), Brian Miller (Fr, 1G, 1A). The 2015 RHS Boys Soccer Team produced yet another memorable season for the players, coaches and fans. One of the greatest memories from the 2015 season was the Sectional Championship game. The atmosphere of that game with the support of the entire student body, teaching staff and administration was amazing. The 2015 RHS Boys Soccer Team would like to thank all their fans; the students, teachers, administration and most of all our parents. The yearly success of our program would not be possible without this continued support! GO RAMS! #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 JV Boys Soccer - Coach, Cesar Blacido The Ramsey J.V. Soccer team had a phenomenal season! The team finished with a record of 9-2-4. Some of the highlights during the JV soccer season were going nine games without losing, making it to the third round of counties, finishing with a record of 9-2-4, scoring 33 goals, and posting 8 shutouts! Our defense did a superb job! In goal, we had sophomore Josh Schwarz and freshman Justin Siegel . Both players were key figures to our success by providing leadership, organizing our defense and of course, making some great saves. In our sweeper and stopper position, we had a combination of sophomores Marcus Odin , Chris Sylvester , and leading the pack junior Patrick Strauss . The boys did an excellent job cleaning up everything that came through the middle. All players were fundamental to our success defensively. On the defensive outside positions we had freshman Robbie Novak , sophomore Luke Monaco and co-captain Anthony Mazza . All three players did a great job shutting down the play through the wings and helped out offensively by creating space and providing the offense with an extra attacker. In the midfield we had freshman Kyle Smilon , sophomore Richard Perrotta , and co-captain junior Erik Bendixen . All three players did a great job controlling the tempo of each game while playing with composure. All three players showed commitment and discipline through the entirety of the season. On the outside wings, we had sophomores Daniel Bravo, Sean Jablon, Jacob Nachinson, and Ali Qurbanzada . Each player gave maximum effort in a position that requires a lot of conditioning and focus. Offensively, we had four sophomores and one junior. The sophomores were co-captain Chris Bonilla , Chris Bravo, Aiden O’Malley, Anthony Giglia and junior Connor Koch . All players played a strong role is finding ways to break down our opponents’ defense. Overall, this season was a special journey. It was a pleasure to work with this incredible, hard working, fun group of guys. As these boys continue to develop their skills, there is no doubt that the future for the Ramsey program looks promising and successful. GO RAMS! #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 Freshman Boys Soccer - Coach, Ryan Hollender The 2015 Ramsey High School Boys Freshman Soccer Team finished their season with a 4-3-2 record. The Rams found most of their success in the latter half of the season after a tough loss to #1 Bergen Catholic in the Bergen County Tournament. The boys reeled off three straight wins against tough league opponents. The Team was led by goal keeper, John Creegan. Creegan recorded 4 shut-outs with the help of a solid defense in front of him. John did a remarkable job commanding and organizing the back line. The Rams defense was anchored by sweeper Tommy McGonigle, Raul Camejo, Nick DeAngelo, Zach Peters, Kevin Murphy, Christian Doherty and Justin Illes. This defensive tandem did a tremendous job keeping the team in every game. The midfield positions were filled by Michael Taradash, Kieran Francis, Alex Green, Graham Valkenburg, Alex Schneider, Riley Lambert, Aidan Frazier and Mason Shobe. This group did a wonderful job on both sides of the ball. The boys played a crucial role in creating pressure on the opposition and setting up the forwards for success. At the forward position, Alex Patunas and Rafael Zurita wreaked havoc up top. The duo combined for the majority of the Rams goals this season. They did a fantastic job in both scoring and assisting other players on the field. Both forwards gave the opposition a handful every game. The 2015 season showed a lot of promise for the future. This tight-knit group of players will find success moving forward. Girls Varsity Soccer - Head Coach, George Wright Many considered 2015 to be a rebuilding year for Ramsey soccer, but this group of girls had an entirely different idea. After splitting the first two games of the season, Ramsey ran off nine straight wins completing their schedule with a record of 16-3-2. Enroute to this impressive record, the girls finished second in the difficult Patriot Division, reached the Quarter Finals of the County Tournament and the Semi-Finals of the North I, Group II State Soccer Tournament. #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 Defense was the name of the game for Ramsey. Led by defenders Meredith Edwards, Maddie Barrow, Hannah Tracy, Meredith Halik and goalie Erica Lis the Lady Rams recorded 12 shut outs. The defense was also bolstered by Brianna Bussiere, Jordan Vozeh, Aly Martin, Roxana Boff and Elaine Les, who all contributed to a fierce defense that allowed less than ¾ of a goal per game. Midfield also played a key role in the success of this year’s team. Seniors Olivia Gilligan, Kelsey Larkin, Devan Larson and Kelly Carolan combined with Dana Webb, Corinne Kropas, Jaclyn Johnston and Melissa Lara to establish a strong midfield presence. Their skills improved throughout the year and their ability to control midfield was a key to our success. The major beneficiary of our midfield play was our forward line. Sydnee Rawdon, Kayla Whelan and Cassie Phillips made up our forward line. These girls played a crucial role, scoring goals in many tightly contested matches. We are extremely proud of these girls and the success that they achieved during the 2015 soccer season. JV Girls Soccer - Coach, Jess Hogan This year our JV girls’ soccer team had an amazing season, finishing with a record of 12-1. The hard work and dedication of each individual on our team is what led to the success of our season and I could not be more proud to coach a group of girls with such personality, enthusiasm, and commitment to what it means to be a “team”. Our season highlights include nine shutout victories, a comeback win in the county quarterfinals against Wayne Hills, and a hard fought battle through double overtime and penalty kicks, eventually falling to IHA in the county semifinals. Our team was very strong collectively, with 23 girls on the roster. Keepers Rhiannon Brown and Sara Leonard did an outstanding job throughout the course of the season shutting out nine teams and only letting up 3 goals. Our defense was anchored centrally by sweeper Claire D’Elia and stoppers Victoria Sebastian and Caryn Sims, while wing defenders Caylie Landau, Christina Bergen, Morgan Sweeney, and Caroline Hudson were vital in maintaining composure in high pressure situations and preventing shots on goal. The core of our midfield was controlled with ease by Cameron Iaccarino, McCall Jensen, Sarah Reyes-Guerra, Sabrina Sudol and Sabrina King. Their skill to distribute passes and communicate effectively worked in tandem with wing midfielders Alex Peller, Margo Poelstra, Emily Scuderi, and Kayla Kolb to create countless offensive opportunities. Our #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 forwards up top displayed tremendous effort and were key contributors to our success in each game; they include: Maddi Royle, Fallon Peller, Samantha Sudol, Julia Bressi, and our leading goal scorer this season, Lauren Chamberlin. With such a large team, it’s critical to recognize the versatility and willingness of each player to adjust to different positions on the field and put forth their best effort regardless. It was a pleasure to see the remarkable improvement of these athletes during the course of the season, the heart they brought to the game and the memories they created as a team. Freshman Girls Soccer - Coach, Kevin Sabella The 2015 Ramsey High School Girls Freshman Soccer Team finished their season with a 8-2-1 record and reached the finals for the Freshman Girls Soccer Bergen County Tournament for the second year in a row. The team won their league title for the second year in a row as well. The Lady Rams were the #3 seed in the tournament, and beat #6 Paramus in the first round. They then traveled to #2 seed IHA and upset the Blue Eagles 2-1 in the semi finals. In the final game, the Lady Rams were down 1-0 to #1 seed Ridgewood at halftime. In the second half, the Lady Rams tied the score 1-1 before eventually falling to Ridgewood 2-1. Defensively, the Lady Rams were lead by Katie Sylvester in goal, who only surrendered five goals in 11 games. She did a tremendous job of organizing our back line and did a great job of commanding the penalty area. Our sweeper Amanda Kaczorowski was the anchor of our defense and did a tremendous job of shutting down the opposition. At the fullback positions, Marisa McEntee and Mia Raspantini did a great job all year in limiting the opposition's forwards from scoring and helped out our offense by joining our attack as well. At the stopper position, Jen Muller, Myranda Sims, Kendall Eilers and Emma McGuirk were the center of our defense and did a nice job of handling the middle of our field. At the midfield positions, the Lady Rams had plenty of depth to go around. At the center midfield positions, Melanie Mack, Maggie Scaglione and Angelina Sjenicic did a great job of leading our attack on offense. At the outside fullback positions, the Lady Rams were led by Reilly Brown, Carissa Perrone, Aislinn Farley, and Jacqueline Kalksma. All four girls had good speed, good touch on the ball, and understood where they needed to be from a defensive standpoint. At the forward position, the Lady Rams had four forwards who put pressure on the opposition, and had plenty of goals. Alexa Correa, Fiona Alicandri, Mackenzie Currier, and #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 Kara Arbadji were all instrumental in our success this year. They created havoc on our offensive side of the ball and gave the opposition fits all year. Overall, this was another successful season for the Ramsey Freshman Girls Soccer Team. The players did a tremendous job all year on and off the field and the future is bright for Ramsey Girls Soccer. Girls & Boys Cross Country - Head Coach, John Kirchhof, Assistant Coach, Corinne DiStaso Girl’s Cross Country The Girl’s Cross Country team had another successful year in 2015. They finished second in the league and second in the State Sectional meet behind River Dell. Unfortunately, River Dell was one of the best teams in the state and happened to be in our league and section. At the Wild Safari Invitational, the girls placed fourth, being the first team from New Jersey. One of the highlights of the season was winning the County Group D race. The girls battled Glen Rock for the title and won easily. One of our girls was disqualified for going on the wrong side of a cone. We thought the title was lost, but because of the depth of the team, they still won by ten points. Up on Garret Mountain, the girls battled River Dell once again and finished second, more than 60 points ahead of the third place team. Even though the Rams won the sectional meet the last three years, this year’s team place second but was a stronger team than the previous three years. The 2015 Rams never gave up in any race. They went out and raced every meet and battled right to the end. It was always nice to hear the compliments from the other coaches on how our girls would go out and race their teams each and every week. Whether winning a championship or placing as high as they could, these girls rose to the occasion each and every time. The girls placed eighth in the State Group Championships by beating Matawan on a tie breaker. Both teams scored 228 points but we won on the finish of our sixth girl. This showed what our whole season was about. Race as a team and win as a team. This year’s top seven were Victoria Clinton, Lily Flood, Lindsay McNeill, Erinn McGahan, Margaret Schiazza, Jacqueline Pesco and Fiona Flood. Jenny Monteith and Jenna Bahnsen were four year competitors for the Rams. Kaeli Brennan, Caroline Voigt and Jenny DeSimone competed with the Varsity and raced JV in the championship season. Congratulations on being named the small school Team of the Year !!! #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 Boy’s Cross Country The Ramsey Boy’s Cross Country had a successful season this year. Over the last two years, we have lost most of our team to graduation. This was definitely a rebuilding year with a new crop of runners trying to make the Varsity team. Nick Kaczorowski and Ryan Salvo were the only two returning varsity members. After a slow start and a little shuffling of the remaining five spots, the varsity boys came into their own. In the league meet, the boys placed 3rd overall, beating teams that beat them earlier in the year. They saved their best team race for the State Sectional meet at Garret Mountain. Finishing tenth out of twenty was a major accomplishment for this team. They never got down on themselves and got ready to race week after week during the season. The Varsity team was made up of Nick Kaczorowski, Ryan Salvo, Peter McNally, Zach Zimmer, Franklin Shobe, Dan Riordan and Kevin Johns. The last five runners never had varsity experience and raced their hearts out during the season. Nick was named first team All League and Honorable Mention All County. Ryan Salvo was named second team All League. Congratulations to both of them. The JV team, racing along with the varsity, also had a successful year. They improved each week and learned what it was like to race the different courses and the different championship meets. The future looks bright with another year under their belt. The JV team was made up of the following runners: Eraldo Llukaj, Robby McOwen, Sean Coyne, Rob Kramer, Andrew Mariani, Holden Scholl and Dominic DeVito. It was a very good year for the Freshmen. Eleven boys came out for the team and they learned what XC was all about. They raced with the Varsity and JV during the dual meets and against freshmen during the weekends. They were very successful placing 1st in the league meet, 1st in the County meet and 3nd in the North Jersey JV/Frosh Championships. The Frosh were: Ryan Bahnsen, Joe Bonnano, Bennet Esposito, Ethan Huggins, Andrew Lundy, Sean Martin, Charlie Perrone, David Perry, William Johnson, Timmy Pupalaikis and John Redinger. If they boys continue to progress in this sport, the future is very bright for Ramsey XC. #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 Varsity Girls Tennis - Coach, Carol Carlson What a great tennis season we had this year! Perfect weather, no rainouts, no winter coats, hats or gloves, and many wonderful matches. We finished with a 10-5 record and a trip to the state sectional tournament. We won our first match and unfortunately met the #1 seed, Tenafly in the second round. Even though we lost, Tenafly had to work hard to beat us. Playing 1st singles was Nina McAllan, a freshman. It is a really tough position to play, especially for a freshman, but Nina stepped up and had an undefeated season, playing against the best on every team we played. A real highlight of her season was winning the small schools county tournament. It was an amazing match that proved you can never give up. Congratulations Nina! Playing 2nd singles was the team captain, junior, Jaime Davis. Jaime was a very determined tennis player. Her record was 10 & 5. I saw such growth in your tennis game this year and particularly during the season. A win against Pascack Hills was a real accomplishment. At 3rd singles was Byrthe Sikkema, a freshman, who moved here from the Netherlands this past summer. She had to adapt to a new country, a new culture, the English language, make new friends and learn to play on a different tennis surface. She did a fantastic job and was a great addition to the team. Her record was 10 & 5. We had two new players at 1st doubles, Bridget Bierfass, a junior and Olivia Mack, a freshman. Coming out for the tennis the first time and making varsity was a real accomplishment for Bridget. She learned a lot during the season and was an amazing, aggressive net player. Again, making varsity as a freshman is pretty amazing, Olivia. You had a very sharp learning curve to learn how to play with a partner at doubles and you did a super job. You two made a great team. Your record, 8 & 7. Playing 2nd doubles was Sydney Kelman and Natalie Lattoz, both juniors. They were two of the reliable returning players from last year. As the season went on, they started working together as a team. Their serves and net games improved tremendously. They made a real contribution to our winning record when we really needed them. Their record was 9 & 6. #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 I am always amazed at how fast this tennis season goes by. It is always sad to see it end, but the good thing is, there are no seniors we have to say goodbye to and we everyone returning, we should have an even stronger team next year. Thank you Jaime for the amazing job you did as team captain. You were a great leader, organizing summer practices, team practices, fundraising, and ordering sweats. It makes my job much easier. I am so happy you will be back for another year. I want to thank all of you for such a wonderful, successful season! It was a lot of fun. I enjoyed working with all of you. I hope you continue working on your tennis games. Practice, take lessons, play, play, play and have fun. Thank you parents for all your support this season. I hope to see you again next year. Finally, thank you Mr. Trocolar for all your help and good work with the JV team. JV Girls Tennis - Coach, Steve Trocolar I want to congratulate the JV girls’ tennis team on an outstanding season. Throughout season the Junior Varsity team demonstrated hard work and enthusiasm. They truly appreciated what it meant to be a part of a team. If you watched any of the matches this year you would have seen a team that worked together and were able to step up their level of play when the match was on the line. There were a few new faces to the team this year that helped to contribute to many of our wins this season. I would like to congratulate all of the girls on a terrific season. You made the season fun and exciting, and one I will not forget. I look forward to another exciting season next year. I urge each of you to continue to play and take lessons in the off season to take your game to the next level. With a continued effort in improving your skills you will be able to make more of a contribution to the team next year. The members of the JV team are: Grace Chang, Elly Raisch, Elena Darmiento, Alexandra DeMeritt, Maria Gomez, Kunjal Kapadia, Rachel Ko, Rebecca Leybel, and Meghan McKeown Varsity Volleyball - Head Coach, Matt Wynne Varsity volleyball finished the year with big wins over Ridgefield Park, Cliffside Park, Dwight Morrow, and Westwood. Contributing to that effort were a strong group of 8 seniors, and a greatly improving group of 3 juniors and 2 freshman. The seniors were Kazel Kapadia who was voted to the All Patriot Division second team, captains Francesca DePalo and Mariana #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 Perez, and Hannah Tokish, Julia Kissel, Lauren Venturini, Kaitlyn Bussanich and Lily Kramer. The juniors were Hailey Reynolds, Sydney Cozza, and Megan Conrad. The freshmen were Patriot Division Honorable Mention Deirdre Corrigan and Emma Eide. These 13 girls were a lot of fun to coach, and gave great effort towards improving from June all the way until the end of October, from Ridgewood Summer League, to Verona Pool, to captain’s practice, thru preseason double session, and then thru the regular season. Kapadia was our starting defensive specialist libero and she finished the season with a team leading 74 digs and 8 serving aces. Tokish was our starting setter and she had a team leading 38 assists and 25 serving aces. Venturini was our starting middle blocker and she had 18 kills and 11 blocks. Bussanich and Kissel were outside hitters who finished with 14 and 19 kills respectively. Kramer was a middle blocker who finished with 3 kills and 5 blocks. DePalo and Perez were tremendous leaders for the team, keeping everyone focused on the tasks at hand. Frequently they motivated their teammates to step it up in practice and at games. DePalo finished the season with 5 digs and 4 assists. Perez finished with 7 kills and 7 digs. Reynolds was our starting middle blocker and led the team with 25 blocks and added 21 kills. Cozza was our back row specialist and she contributed with 13 digs and the prettiest back row kill against Dumont. Conrad was a sparkplug off the bench and her positive spirit lifted us when we were down. She had 1 block and 1 assist. Our two freshmen took the challenge of being a varsity player in their first year in high school, and thrived. Corrigan led the team in kills with 39, and chipped in with 37 digs and 12 aces. Eide showed all around ability by totaling 33 assists, 8 digs, 12 blocks, 17 kills, and 9 blocks. Thanks to Coach Schroeder and Coach Novak for running a terrific preseason, and being there to help out a first year coach’s growing pains. Thank you to all 13 girls as well for your hard work, undying spirit, and positive attitudes, I learned a lot from you all, and will look back fondly on this season. JV Volleyball - Coach, Lynn Novak This year, the JV volleyball team members worked hard in both practice and competitions to end the season with an even number of wins and losses. The improvement and growth over last year’s season was amazing! Pre-season training gave the athletes the ability to execute skills at a higher level. From the beginning, team members recognized that success would come from hard work and by focusing not only on individual improvement, but also the development of team cohesiveness. #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 The growth in experience and skill of our offensive players made opponents wary of our front line. Middle hitters: Gabrielle Marchisin and Mireille Zreik provided a strong middle hitter offense and defense. They were able to hit quick sets in the middle for a faster offense and block opponents’ plays. Their timing and success with blocking improved throughout the season. They learned that “jousting” at the net can be a thrilling experience but getting a “kill” as a hitter is amazing! Equally exciting is setting the perfect ball for a hitter to hit. Setters: Molly Becher, Mary Bunone and Julia Winterhalter, developed speed in getting to hard-to-reach passes and consistently delivered high, outside sets to outside hitters. As confidence in their abilities grew, they varied the offense to include sets to the middle and to the right, front outside hitter. Having strong setters allowed for an offense where any of the six players on the court could spike the ball at the opposing team. Passing, passing, and more passing was the focus of much of the preseason. “Green Sea Turtle” became the skill prompt of the year. The development of strong foundational skills meant that when competition was tough and nervousness abounded, players could think basics and feel assured that they could break the momentum of the opponent. Defensive specialists (liberos), Lexi Evangel and Kim Vargas, recognized that a good pass was the first step to success. They were determined to deliver good passes to setters. While not defensive specialists, outside hitters Maeve Connolly and Maura Telfer, developed the ability and self-confidence to meet all volleyballs that came their way! After receiving a serve, they had to quickly transition to their outside hitting position. Strong passers need to have confidence as well as skills when playing any back-row position on the court. The ability to predict a play and to communicate to others on the court takes experience and self-assurance. By being vocal on the court, outside hitter Kathryn Maraday helped to keep players prepared for unexpected situations. Her ability to encourage players during difficult drills and games against formidable opponents is commendable. There was great depth of skill on the team this past season. In particular, several athletes could play the outside hitter position well. By the middle of the season, all hitters developed confidence in playing each of the three front-row positions. Right-side, outside hitter Grace Robblee was always eager to prove her skills and surprise opponents with a strong off-side hit. There were even times when her outlet setter skills would lead to a kill by a middle hitter! Taryn Twohig, quietly confident, could consistently snap her wrist while hitting in such a way that she earned many points for the team. Finally, Sofia DePalo made it her objective to #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 know the responsibilities of every position on the court. She confidently played any front-row position when called upon and even tried her hand at setting! Volleyball is a sport that can be played competitively or recreationally throughout one’s life. The JV volleyball team has developed competitiveness as well as an appreciation of the fun to be had when playing a team sport. The off-season is a time to participate in other sports that enhance the skills needed for volleyball. Whether swimming, playing softball, basketball or joining a club volleyball team, the desire to remain active and improve are qualities each player possesses. Freshman Volleyball - Coach, Erin Schroeder The transition from recreational league sports to competition at the high school level is difficult. The athlete is at a new school with new teammates and coaches. The level of necessary commitment and the speed of the game is substantially increased. However, generally speaking, the basic concepts of the sport remains the same. Volleyball is an exception to the above. The evolution from the game played at the recreational and junior high level to high school is vastly different than other sports. Foremost, in the earlier level, wherever you are positioned at the beginning of the action, you remain in that “spot” until play is stopped. You then rotate to another position and stand in the next “spot” and play from there. This rotation occurs over and over and the player is only asked to defend and play from their initial starting position. At the high school level, each player has a specific position on the court. You must stay in your rotation and cannot overlap with players next to you until the first contact is made (a serve). Then you must quickly move to your specific position on the court before the ball crosses the net and play out the point. I am sure you had to read that couple times... imagine learning that for the first time with all the pressures of being a first year student in a new school. As a freshman volleyball player you are asked, in just two short weeks of preseason, to: (1) comprehend position specific volleyball; (2) memorize serve receive patterns for 6 rotations; (3) memorize defense patterns for each potential attack; (4) learn offensive footwork and timing for sets which you have never heard of before; and (5) execute all of this while not letting the ball touch the ground. At the high school level the object of the game is no longer to just keep the ball in the air but rather to attack the opposing team and terminate the ball #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 on their side. This requires controlling the ball with three touches, another new concept for the freshman volleyball player. Though timid at first, the 2015 Ramsey High School Freshman Volleyball Team handled this influx of information and physical training with class and determination. Following the leadership of Claire Kramer and Katie Novak, the team worked hard and mastered the many new skills required of them. Erica Grzybek and Katie Novak quarterbacked the Lady Rams offense this year as the Setters in our 6-2 offense. Katie and Erica not only had to run the offense with five new sets they also had to learn everyone else’s positions in order to direct the team to success. Maggie Bickerstaffe led the team defensively as our Libero. Her experience in the back row helped steady our defense during tough rallies. Sarah Hamilton, Lindsay Pepper and Sammi Weinrich dominated the net as our Middle Blockers. Sarah, Lindsay and Sammi consistently surprised our opponents by running a first tempo “31” attack that is rarely taught at this level. Mia Caviasco, Claire Kramer and Ashleigh Myl completed our team in the essential Outside Hitter roll. We heavily relied on Mia, Claire and Ashleigh for their all-around contribution to the team. Outside Hitters are often known as jacks-of-all-trades because they must be highly successful in defense, serve receive, blocking and hitting. Due to our small roster this year, Mia and Lindsay were often asked to step into new roles with short notice and both stepped up to the plate enthusiastically. The Lady Rams’ hard work in practice paid off in competition. We had a very successful season definitively beating most teams and confidently competing with the larger, more experienced programs. We often received compliments on our strong serving and work ethic. The 2015 Ramsey High School Freshman Volleyball Team will definitely be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come! Varsity Field Hockey - Head Coach, Rebecca Fantry The Varsity Field Hockey team had it’s most successful season in recent years finishing with a record of 21-1. The girls put forth a great deal of time and effort in the off-season to come in fully prepared for this season. The senior leadership was outstanding and the girls did a fantastic job of bringing the team together both on and off the field. The team finished their regular season by sweeping the Northeast Division II League with a 13-0 record which helped secure their 5th straight League Title. They defended their Bergen County Title and won the Championship to secure back to back titles. They entered the State Tournament as the #2 #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 seed and fought a hard-nosed battle with the #4 ranked team in the state, West Essex, in the State Sectional Final. The Rams came up short in the Sectional Final, but it turned out to be their only blemish on the season. The team gave up only 7 goals and recorded 16 shutouts on the season. The success of the program is attributed to the dedication and love the players have for the sport and each other. The senior class has been an instrumental part of the amazing success of the program over the past few seasons. The seniors were led by Captains Jess Bell, Lia DiPiazza, and Olivia Doherty. Sweeper Brooke Bernier, goalie Laura Branna, and defenders Julia D’Antonio and Mackenzie Juhlin helped solidify the strong defensive unit the Rams deployed. Senior midfielders Kendall Magennis, Rebecca Moya, Ashley Silecchia, and Tori Stitz helped control the center of the field and provide a strong force on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field. Senior attackers Megan Bosso, Elisa Silecchia, Caitlin Sweeney and Anna Wallner rounded out the Rams attack and helped score more than 90 goals on the year. The juniors that helped contribute to this successful and memorable season were defenders McKenzie Bishop, Madeline Hawtin, Amanda Thorp, and Maddie Truax. The junior attackers that played an important role on the team were Kelsey Liebmann, Mary Pless, and Kassidy Shetler. Shetler was named the Bergen Record’s Athlete of the Week for the week of October 13, 2015 as well as the Bergen Record’s All North Jersey Player of the Year. Lauren Bradley was injured this season, but she remained supportive and dedicated to her teammates throughout the year. The sophomores on the varsity squad this season were attackers Kristen Garone, Lexi Hawtin, and Ryan Henry. Midfielder Aimee Leto and defender Sarah Welsh also contributed to the success of the team. Sophomore goalie Katie Magennis was injured as well this season, but she never missed a day supporting her team. Freshman attacker Jane Pless and goalie Hailey Jones dressed for the team during their post-season games. Several other girls were important to the team from an off the field standpoint. We have been lucky enough to have two fantastic stat-girls join our family, seniors Kayla Azouri and Deanna DeLuca. The Rams have consistently been a force in northern New Jersey and proved that even more to be true this year. These girls have continued the legacy of success that has become Ramsey Field Hockey. The team had big wins over Parsippany and Hackettstown in the state tournament as well as Old Tappan in the county semi-finals, Wayne Hills in overtime, and defeating Northern Highlands twice. I’m confident that the program will continue to develop and be a force in their League, County and State divisions. This team is a true example of #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 what it means to be a Ramsey Ram and that pride will carry the girls into next season as they work to defend their County and League Titles. JV Field Hockey - Coach, Sheila Morgan This year was the most successful season to date with a record of 12-0-2. Amazing job ladies! This would not have been possible if this team didn’t dedicated themselves to working hard every practice and game. I knew when the girls stepped out on the field that they were all going to work together to get the job done and always give 110%. Thank you ladies for that. It was a pleasure being your coach this year and it’s a year I will never forget but most of all thanks for enjoying the game of field hockey with me every day. The JV players are: Sonny Del Valle, Kristen Garone, Maeve Leighton, Aimee Leto, Kaitlyn McCaskey, Jaclyn Molinari, Rebecca Schachtel, Danielle Tuntigian, Sarah Welsh, Jordan Baruffaldi, Vanessa DePinto, Jenna Doran, Arianna Gemma, Meggie Henry, Hailey Jones, Kaela Monte, Jane Pless and Lauren Salazer. Freshman Field Hockey - Coach, Mary O’Connor This season we were only able to play five games due to some injuries in the beginning of the season, but within those five games we were able to do some really great things. We ended the season with 4 wins and 1 tie. We scored a total of 21 goals, had 19 assists, and only allowed 1 goal to be scored against us for the whole season. The most amount of players we ever played with on the field was 8 while the opposing teams would sometimes play with more and we were still successful when we were playing down in numbers. The freshman girls worked really well together and also had many opportunities to play with the JV team. They all worked hard this year and deserve all of the success they received. The freshman players are: Jordan Baruffaldi, Vanessa DePinto, Jenna Doran, Arianna Gemma, Meggie Henry, Hailey Jones, Kaela Monte, Jane Pless and Lauren Salazer. #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 M.V.P./M.I.P./COACHES AWARDS Football Boy’s Soccer Girl’s Soccer Boy’s Cross Country Girl’s Cross Country Tennis Volleyball Field Hockey Most Valuable Player Thomas Feehan Most Improved Player Marc Tarabocchia Most Valuable Player Michael Cirilli Most Valuable Player Sam Berman Coaches Award Jacob Berkofsky Most Valuable Player Maddie Barrow Most Improved Player Hannah Tracy Coaches Award Meredith Edwards Most Valuable Player Nicholas Kaczorowski Most Improved Player Franklin Shobe Most Valuable Player Victoria Clinton Most Improved Player Lindsay McNeill Most Valuable Player Nina McAllan Most Improved Player Jaime Davis Most Valuable Player Kazel Kapadia Most Improved Player Lauren Venturini Most Valuable Player Lia DiPiazza Most Improved Player Olivia Doherty Coaches Award Jess Bell #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 1st TEAM ALL DIVISION RECIPIENTS Football Jake Gursaly, Dan Donovan, Brendan Mahon, Thomas Feehan, Mario Ferraro, Chris Blasius, Sean Donnelly, Marc Tarabocchia, Dan DeAngelis Boys Soccer Sam Berman, Michael Cirilli, Matt Fox, Zach Rauch, Christian Tesoriero Girls Soccer Kelsey Larkin, Maddie Barrow, Meredith Edwards Boys Cross Country Nick Kaczorowski Girls Cross Country Victoria Clinton, Elizabeth Flood, Lindsay McNeill Tennis Nina McAllan Field Hockey Kassidy Shetler, Lia DiPiazza, Mary Pless, Rebecca Moya, Jess Bell #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 2nd TEAM ALL DIVISION RECIPIENTS Football Ryan Scialla, Thomas Scanlon, Matt Lowery, Thomas McCormack, Byron Zabala Boys Soccer Ryan Vatcher, Braden Miller, Sean Connolly, Declan Rybacki, Sean Finnegan Girls Soccer Dana Webb, Meredith Halik, Olivia Gilligan, Hannah Tracy, Corinne Kropas Boys Cross Country Ryan Salvo Girls Cross Country Erinn McGahan, Jacqueline Pesco Tennis Jaime Davis, Byrthe Sikkema Volleyball Kazel Kapadia Field Hockey Olivia Doherty, McKenzie Bishop #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 HONORABLE MENTION - ALL DIVISION Football Tim Finnegan, Adam Reisfield Boys Soccer Harry Illes Girls Soccer Devan Larson Boys Cross Country Peter McNally Girls Cross Country Fiona Flood Margaret Schiazza Tennis Bridget Bierfass, Olivia Mack Volleyball Deirdre Corrigan, Emma Eide Field Hockey Laura Branna #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 ALL COUNTY TEAMS Boys Soccer Michael Cirilli-2nd Team Sam Berman-3rd Team Girls Soccer Maddie Barrow - 2nd Team Girls Cross Country - Girls Team of the Year Victoria Clinton - 2nd Team Elizabeth Flood - 3rd Team Tennis Nina McAllan- 2nd Team Field Hockey - Team of the Year Mary Pless, Kassidy Shetler (Player of the Year), Lia DiPiazza, Jess Bell, Rebecca Moya - 1st Team Olivia Doherty, McKenzie Bishop - 2nd Team HONORABLE MENTION - ALL COUNTY Boys Soccer Christian Tesoriero, Zach Rauch, Matt Fox Boys Cross County Nick Kaczorowski Field Hockey Laura Branna #GO RAMS Sportscaster Fall 2015 - 2016 OTHER HONORS Boys Soccer Mike Cirilli, Bergen County All Star Sam Berman, Bergen County All Star Sean Kopczynski, BCBSCA Unsung Hero Award HIGH HONOR ROLL RECIPIENTS Anthony Ascione Jenna Bahnsen Kaitlin Bussanich Dominic DeVito Matthew Fox Kristen Garone Kevin Johns Nicholas Kaczorowski Joseph Kalksma Alexandra Kilkenny Natalie Lattoz Lindsay McNeill Alexandra Merritt Rebecca Moya Kaitlyn Pierpont Ryan Scialla Kassidy Shetler Caitlin Sweeney Hannah Tokish
