Herron complained about the heavy traffic on her street, “There are too many overweight vehicles traveling in that area.” She asked the Council’s help on possibly getting 4-way stop signs or flashing lights to help alleviate the problem in that area. “That intersection is very dangerous and there have been several close calls of traffic accidents.” (There was one accident involving a school bus.) Herron came back again to speak at the 5/28/14 Council Meeting. “Nothing was done since the last time I spoke at the previous meeting. School buses, tractor trailers and ambulances are still constantly traveling Groom Street. I can understand the ambulances, but the tractor-trailers are a constant presence. I’ve gone to the Police, the Council and the Mayor. I’m just asking to enforce the laws on the books.” Garbage was another big issue at the 5/12/14 Caucus Meeting. Heavily traveled Convery Boulevard has had a problem with garbage bags and cans being blown into the streets on windy days. The Fred Henry 572 Votes - 49.91% Council At Large Mickey Gross - 693 Votes; Christine Noble 756 Votes The Intersection of Groom & Neville Street is another heavily traveled dangerous intersection. *Photo by Joe Bayona part of Convery that had the most problems would be the area where the houses are closest to the streets. Council President Joel Pabon was also concerned about the connector from High Street to Rte. 440 where trucks have been dropping off rocks, especially by Rudyk Park. “As far as the Convery Boulevard (Rte. 35) Garbage has not been picked up and some residents had stickers put on their cans. These residents received no warning letters.” DPW Director Frank Dann came up to answer the concerns of the Council and residents. He said Sanitation Supervisor Hector Palidura has gone to residents in that area of Convery Boulevard to warn them about disposal of their garbage. Council President Joel Pabon said, “We need to take a look at what is going on in that particular area around Convery Boulevard.” Business Administrator Greg Fehrenbach said, “The Sanitation Workers complain about the garbage problems on Convery Boulevard. Palidura documents complaints and will take photos of the garbage that he has seen.” Councilman Fernando Irizarry commented, “The train station also needs a major cleanup.” Councilman Gonzalez Answers Critics Responds to Residents Siberry and Sierakowski Statements PERTH AMBOY - At a previous Council Meeting resident Stanley Sierakowski posed a question to the city attorney. That question was: “Is it illegal for a Council Member to accept a position or another form of compensation not to run for re-election?” The city attorney said, “I will have to get back to you with an answer.” At a subsequent meeting, Sierakowski posed that same question, this time addressing John O’Connell 569 Votes - 49.65% the Attorney and Councilman Kenneth Gonzalez. The attorney advised Gonzalez that he did not have to answer that question since Sierakowski mentioned Gonzalez when he questioned the lawyer again. Gonzalez took the attorney’s advice. Councilman Kenneth Gonzalez finally said at a meeting held in late May that he was neither offered a position nor Continued on Page 4 Councilman Kenneth Gonzalez City Repairs, Trash Storage Discussed in South Amboy By: Joseph L. Kuchie SOUTH AMBOY - Sidewalk repairs as well as trash and garbage storage were two big discussion points at last week’s South Amboy business meeting. Councilwoman Zusette Dato began the discussion when she asked about an area at the end of John Street. She explained that workers put asphalt where bricks should be and it was not “aesthetically pleasing” for the typically beautiful space. Business Administrator Camille Tooker said she was not familiar that they put asphalt but told Dato that she would look into the matter. “I think what happened was that they were out plugging holes and they probably made a misjudgment…it should not be asphalt,” Tooker said. “I will let them know that has to be changed.” Following Dato was Councilwoman Christine Noble, who asked Tooker when applications for exterior grants would be taken in town. Tooker explained that residents could begin looking for those applications in late August and the funding would begin in September. “The funding should become available in September… we’re going to have something on the website soon,” Tooker said “Applications will not be ready until August. It’s important to remember it’s first come, first serve and that you must have a code violation.” Councilmen Mickey Gross raised questions about the sidewalks located outside the South Amboy YMCA. He questioned what was being done about the broken sidewalks being blocked off by cones, but Tooker said that the YMCA, not the city, was responsible for fixing the area. President Connors asked Tooker where the city was with the garbage and recyclables being left on porches and sides of houses. Tooker responded by saying those residents were receiving tickets for not properly storing their trash bins, but Connors asked to see the information. “Can I see a list of those tickets? Because I haven’t see any improvements since we’ve talked” Connors asked. “You shouldn’t walk down the street and have to look at garbage cans.” All council members were in attendance for the business meeting. The next city council meeting will be held on June 18th at 7:00 p.m. Perth Amboy City Council Meeting, Wed. June 11, 2014 - 7:00 p.m. 2. The Amboy Guardian *June 11, 2014 IF IT’S LOCAL IT’S HERE! The Amboy Guardian *June 11, 2014 LOCAL PERSPECTIVE EDITORIAL A Shot in the Arm Proposal Vintage Trolley *Courtesy of URHS At the last Historical Preservation Commission Meeting on Thursday, June 5, 2014, three gentlemen came and spoke about a proposal for a Transportation Heritage Museum or Park for Perth Amboy. The proposed location would be on the East side of the NJ Transit North Jersey Coast Rail Line between Market Street and the Raritan River. These gentlemen represented the United Railroad Historical Society, a registered 501c-3 non-profit. Each of these gentlemen spoke about the importance of preserving old trolleys, train cars, buses and fire trucks. Their collections are from all corners of New Jersey and they want to find an appropriate location to display and operate their vintage vehicles. These men explored over 40 New Jersey locations over a period of 30 years. Their decision to propose to come to Perth Amboy came about when they spoke with Tracy Jordan who knew that they were looking for a centralized place to house their best vehicles. Tracy suggested they try Perth Amboy which is geographically central to New Jersey; it’s along the North Jersey Coastline; there is the proposed Transit Village; the proximity of numerous major highways and let’s not forget - the historic district of Perth Amboy which includes being a part of the Coastal Heritage Trail. Perth Amboy has been described as one of the ten most historic cities in the United States. Our City is full of historic “firsts” as well as many other significant historical monuments. A Transportation Heritage Park could be a part of that. The trolley in Perth Amboy was an integral part of the growth of our City until the 1930’s. The proposed museum would utilize tracks along a narrow ½ mile section of dormant land West of Second Street and parallel to the railroad. At first, there will be only a few pieces, then more would be brought in as the museum achieves success over time. This proposed Transportation Heritage Park would be a positive step in revitalizing the City of Perth Amboy. By creating a Transportation Heritage Attraction it will generate tourism and a reason for people to come visit Perth Amboy for the entire day. These tourists will then patronize local restaurants, discover our fabulous (in the process of being rebuilt) Waterfront and visit the other historic destinations in the City. At the same time we are boosting tourism, we will be teaching future generations about the history of transportation as well as the importance of Perth Amboy in that history. There is a ripple effect in motion when someone takes interest in your town. When opportunity comes, one has to grip onto it with both hands and don’t let go! That opportunity may only come by your way once, so don’t let it pass you by. We thank Bill McKelvey who was able to answer our questions to make our article much more comprehensive . K.M. He was the man that spilled the beans on what the NSA (National Security Agency) was doing over the years. They were collecting telephone data and e-mails plus watching who was on the internet in the United States and overseas. They told us it was for our own safety and to catch the bad guys. Now the telephones company which were working with them like AT&T, Verizon and many more. After 9\11 in 2001 the Bush administration started this PATRIOT ACT in which the ACLU said was about invading our privacy. This is nothing new. In the early 70’s the CIA and FBI were watching and wiretapping the American people that was protesting the Vietnam war. Then in 1971 the Washington Post news paper broke the story out what the CIA and FBI was do- ing. Now many are saying that the NSA is going too far and they have a computer system that collects millions of phone records and other data. Is the NSA more powerful then the Obama Administration? And where is Congress to protect the American people’s civil liberties? Whatever happened to the Constitution and the 4th Amendment? In fact, President Nixon had to resign from office because he broke the law on the 4th Amendment. Orlando “Wildman” Perez. Kenneth Gonzalez Continued From Page 1 was he offered any compensation to not run for re-election. Resident John Siberry read a letter a the 5/12/14 City Council Caucus Meeting where he accused Councilman Gonzalez with unethical and immoral behavior. Siberry mentioned Gonzalez’ illegal use of a handicapped placard in 2012. That case was closed in 2012 in court in Woodbridge because of the statute of limitations. In 2012 Siberry produced photos and documentation as evidence against the Councilman to state his case. In the statement that Siberry read at the Council Meeting dated 5/12/14, he accused Gonzalez of being offered a judgeship position in exchange for not running for re-election. Besides this issue being discussed in that statement, he also accused Gonzalez of representing clients who received grants from the City of Perth Amboy in real estate closings, while he was a sitting Councilman. The Amboy Guardian decided to contact Councilman Gonzalez in reference to the statements that John Siberry has made against him. Gonzalez’ statement sent to the paper said: “The City Attorney has issued a legal opinion in 2010 citing no conflict and permitting me to represent real estate clients who apply for City first time home buyers grant funds since the Council has no say over who gets the funds. The decision is made based solely on who meets the criteria. The identity of the at- Stanley Sierakowski John Siberry torney who represents the person plays no role in the process. Mr. Siberry is aware of all of this but he is seeking to malign my character for political ends. Mr. Siberry continues to harbor a personal vendetta against myself and my family for reasons unknown to me,” The City Attorney Mark Blunda was unavailable at those meetings. Another attorney from his firm was present who advised Mr. Gonzalez about the matters discussed in this article. The Amboy Guardian *June 11, 2014 National Days of Remembrance Holocaust Commemoration Ceremony *Photos by Joe Bayona Shua Kessin and Chaim Weintraub with the Harmonics Band sing the National Anthem. By: Joe Bayona PERTH AMBOY - On Monday May 19th a Holocaust Commemoration Ceremony was held in Perth Amboy. It started with the raising of the Israeli flag at city hall circle. Afterward there was a lecture given in the council chambers by Holocaust survivor Fred Heyman. Mr. Heyman is a NJ resident and member of the Holocaust Council of Metro West in Whippany, NJ. In his talk Mr. Heyman recounted his memories of the Holocaust as a child, from its very beginning. Mr. Heyman’s talk portrayed the Holocaust from a slightly different perspective. When he asked the rhetorical question, “Could it happen in this country?” He said, “Yes it can,” pointing out that between WWI and Hitler’s take over, Germany was a Democracy much like the United States. Another interesting point was made by Mr. Heyman. He asked the audience if anyone had heard of Dachau. About half the audience of 40 people raised their hands. Dachau was the first concentration camp built by the Nazis, and served as the model for all future camps. But when they were building it no one paid attention. Like when we see a condo project or shopping mall going up. We know something is being built but never question what is being built or why. After the lecture Mr. Heyman sat down and answered questions from a group of young interested students. For more information on the Holocaust you can go to the website of Holocaust Council of Metro West at http://jfedgmw.org/page. aspx?id=254523 Mayor Diaz, Herschel Chomsky, and Fred Heyman raise the Israeli flag over city hall circle. I unite my will with the will of God through the merits of my Savior Jesus Christ, and in particular through his patient wearing of the crown of thorns, which with tender devotion thou didst daily contemplate.
