Here some of the restaurants that are fairly near the villa, and a few of our personal favorites in other areas of the island. We update this periodically, but the information may be somewhat outdated by the time of your visit. Many places have websites that we have included, and we’ve also included the link to the TripAdvisor review. The restaurants are ordered in distance from the villa (approximately). We recommend you call ahead for dinner reservations at most of these restaurants, especially during “the season” (mid-December through the end of March). If they ask you what resort you are staying at when you make a reservation, tell them “a private villa near Anse Chastanet” (they won’t recognize “Villa Grand Piton”). Dining hours can be somewhat limited – many restaurants close for a few hours between lunch and dinner (many close at 2:30 pm and reopen at 6 pm), and late dining options (after 9 or 9:30) are also limited. Plan your dining accordingly. You may find appetizers or bar food outside of the typical lunch and dinner hours at some restaurants. Mango Tree at Stonefield does have extended hours (they do not close in the afternoon, and dinner is served until 10 PM), and the Great Room’s last dinner seating is at 10:30 pm. We have included these in approximate driving distance from the villa. The map provided is intended only to give you a general idea of where the restaurants are located – do not use it for precise driving directions. Consult their website, call them, or ask Doxie for detailed directions if you are driving yourself and not taking taxi service. What about tipping and service charges? Many restaurants add 10% service charge to the bill. Sometimes the wait staff gets some of this, sometimes it ends up in the hands of the owners. If we experienced good service, we leave a little extra. We try to leave it in cash, as anything added to the credit card bill may not be received by the staff. The same goes for any service personnel you interact with on your trip – tips are not expected, but greatly appreciated to help stretch their salary a little further. We recommend you call restaurants to verify this information or make reservations, as St Lucian websites are not always kept up-to-date, and response to email may be delayed or checked only sporadically. The St Lucian area code is 758. Villa Grand Piton Restaurant Information Page 1 of 45 Map of restaurants near the villa – approximate locations Villa Grand Piton Restaurant Information Page 2 of 45 “Eat like a local” in Soufriere In St Lucia, the main meal is lunch. They usually start serving at 12 noon, and keep going until they run out! Here is a list of truly local places if you are interested in experiencing life “like a local”. “Local” food (Creole-influenced, local products) is also served at many of the restaurants we are covering later, but most of the restaurants on the next two pages are places that won’t fatten your waist while losing a lot of weight from your wallet! The service can be an extremely slow in the evenings - you may finish one or two bottles of wine while you wait, so don’t go there for dinner after skipping lunch! The Humming Bird also has a nice swimming pool. It is lovely to sit by the pool and have drinks in the evening. Introduce yourself to the owner, Joyce Alexander and tell her that you are guests at our house. You don't need to eat to use the pool. We’ve included a picture of a sample menu (it is outdated, but shows the style of food served). Like most St Lucian menus, the menu changes often or even daily, as they use local food according to availability. It’s only about a block further into Soufriere than the Humming Bird. It’s on the left-hand side when headed into Soufriere from the villa. It’s hard to miss with all the colorful flags with large “O’s” on them. At Orlando’s, you are paying for the food, not the view or the ambiance as you do in many other restaurants. In our opinion, since the villa has such a great view, Orlando’s is a great choice for excellent food without breaking the budget. There really is not much of a view, and the table settings are not as elegant as the Great Room, but the food is going to keep us coming back time and time again! Dinner is a fixed-price five-course tasting menu plus a beverage (alcoholic) for around $50 $55 US. The portions are small, but with five courses, most people will be full by dessert (and our desserts were three mini-crème brûlées!). There are usually two fixed menus to choose from, but you may pick from either menu for each course to create your own meal. The wine list is short, but consists of high-value wines (nice wines for very reasonable prices) that complement his menu. We recently (June 2015) had dinner there, and it was delicious – and even my teenage son was stuffed by the time we got done! Orlando came out to meet the customers, and he is a charming gentleman. We’ve not had a chance to try Orlando’s for breakfast or lunch. We did see a lunch menu, and it consisted of three-course menus for about $25 US and looked delicious! Next trip….. In Soufriere, after crossing the bridge, make the first right you can, then the first left. Petit Peak is down about a block from there. Open for lunch and dinner. Local food; mixed reviews – but mostly good reviews - about the food on TripAdvisor. It seems to depend on what you order. We have not tried it yet. Nice sunsets over the Caribbean, and a great place to have a drink and watch the fishermen come in with their catch in the afternoon. Villa Grand Piton Restaurant Information Page 8 of 45 Restaurants at Anse Chastanet 459-7000 Website: http://www.ansechastanet.com/dining.html Anse Chastanet has five choices for restaurants: Emeralds’s (vegetarian), Apsara (St. Lucian – Indian fusion), The Treehouse (fine tropical Caribbean cuisine), Trou au Diable (beach restaurant on Anse Chastanet beach), and Sample lunch menu from Anse Chastanet beach Restaurant “Trou au Diable”, (beach restaurant on Anse Mamin beach - lunch only). They also have a bar called the “Piton Bar”, and a Beach Bar located in the Trou au Diable beach restaurant. Specialty drinks are expensive at the Piton Bar – about $17 US (includes tax and service fee). Tuesdays at Anse Chastanet restaurants: All of the restaurants are closed on Tuesday, except their Trou au Diable beach restaurant, which has a special event - their Caribbean cuisine night. If you are interested in this, call the resort at 459-7000 and ask them whether they will accept non-guests as diners for the Tuesday night event. They may accept, especially in the off-season. Dress code for restaurants and bars at Anse Chatanet: Dress code in the evenings is smart casual. Gentlemen usually wear collared shirts and bermuda shorts or trousers in the evenings. Light cotton or linen clothing is the most comfortable. At lunch, dry clothing in the beach restaurant and a light cover up for bathing suits is requested. Afternoon Tea at Anse Chastanet Afternoon tea is served from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. daily in the Piton Bar, and an afternoon snack menu is also available at that time in both the Piton and Beach Bar. Jungle Grill at Anse Mamin beach The restaurant on Anse Mamin beach is open from 10 am to 4 pm, and serves lunch from noon until 3 pm. It is closed on Saturdays. Villa Grand Piton Restaurant Information Page 9 of 45 Emerald’s at Anse Chastanet (vegetarian) Emerald's dinner menu is entirely vegetarian, showcasing the organic produce grown on our resort farm Emerald Estate in the Soufriere hills, using only certified organic seeds. It gets mixed reviews on TripAdvisor, and we have not tried it yet. From their website: Caribbean Fine Dining - Treehouse Restaurant Dine in our two open air treehouses overlooking lush tropical foliage and the Caribbean Sea. The restaurant has good burgers (but expensive - $18US before tax and service charge), and the drinks are expensive, too. But it is very convenient to the villa, especially if you are spending the day at Anse Chastanet beach. Lunch is served until 3 pm, and then bar snacks are served. In the evenings, the restaurant switches to a “grill menu”. From their website: The Trou au Diable Restaurant is located right on the Anse Chastanet beach. Here we serve lunch daily. The lunch menu offers a wide and varied choice of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, burgers and Caribbean and Creole specialties. On Tuesday evenings, all guests enjoy a special Caribbean culinary evening in the Trou au Diable Restaurant, which commences with a cocktail reception at 6:30 pm. The atmosphere is festive with the entire stretch of beach in front of the restaurant lit up by flambeau candles. It’s good for a snack if you are spending the day on the beach, but they focus on imported resort food that you could get at any resort in the world (despite their website description). They do have good burgers and Margarita’s. But it is very expensive for what you get, and there are options closer to the villa and less expensive than Bayside for dinner. We had a beverage, an appetizer and pizza there after snorkeling, and were not really impressed. Dress code for Lunch, Casual: T-shirts or polo shirts, shorts or jeans, sundresses or skirts. Set on the white powder sands of one of the island’s most beautiful beaches, Bayside Restaurant in St Lucia offers relaxed a la carte dining for lunch and dinner. Just feet away from the crystal waters of Anse des Pitons and the main swimming pool, you can enjoy gourmet pizzas baked in the wood-fired oven, specialty sandwiches, or the grilled catch of the day. Unique among restaurants in Soufriere, during dinner, a myriad of menu selections and the upbeat live entertainment showcase the flavor and culture of St Lucia. Meals are enjoyable and many times the sunsets are magnificent, be sure to go at least for a drink at sunset! It’s about 2 miles as you head out of Soufriere on the road to Castries Delice at La Haut is located north of Soufriere on the main highway from Soufriere to Castries. It is about a 15-20 minute drive from the villa. La Haut is a working plantation, and much of the food they serve at the restaurant is grown on the plantation. Ask your server for information. When you are done with lunch, stroll around the grounds and enjoy the view. (Marigot Bay was the location where “Dr Doolittle” with Rex Harrison was filmed.) The restaurant is only accessible by water taxi (one runs regularly from the parking lot on the south side of the bay), and is set amongst mangroves, creating a very private and tropical setting, while providing a wealth of aquatic and bird life in the mangroves. The food is excellent, although somewhat expensive (three-course fixed price for $60 US). The Bananas Foster (Rum sautéed bananas) with local bananas, local rum and homemade ice cream is still memorable (10 years after we ate it!) But the setting is incredibly romantic, as your table will most likely be out over the water (but under a roof, of course, if there is a chance of rain). When we were there, it was about 9 pm and raining lightly, which created a cool breeze along with the soothing sound of the rain hitting the seawater. That, plus the lights reflecting off the water, a nice bottle of wine, wonderful food and good service, and we still remember that experience 10 years later! Marigot Bay is about one hour’s drive north of the villa. You also might want to take a water taxi - ask Doxie if you are interested in this. It is reported that, on a clear day, you can see all the way to Martinique. It is up past the Governer’s house, so you will get a little tour of the area when you go up to the restaurant. It is literally a pink colonial-styled house. Yes, the house is old (170 years old!) and sags in a few places (we can say the same thing about ourselves!), but the view is gorgeous, the breezes delightful, the staff friendly, and the food delicious The lucian-bakes (small pieces of dough, fried, a little like a doughnut) that started the meal were addictive. And the rest of the meal was delightful – and reasonably priced. (We had lunch there in the summer of 2014.) They also sell locally-made pottery. Local artist Michelle Ellis owns the restaurant. Call ahead to ask about hours. They appear to be a lunch-only restaurant, and there are reports they are closed on Saturday. If you are anywhere near Castries in the middle of the day, this is an excellent choice for lunch. We make up reasons to go to Rodney Bay just to eat here at least once when we are in St Lucia (and several times if we are lucky). And we always order a few dishes for carryout, so we can enjoy more of their food a few days later without the long drive. Spice of India quickly shot up to the #1 restaurant in all of St Lucia on TripAdvisor shortly after Chef Adil opened it, but has now been eclipsed by Chef Adil’s new restaurant in Marigot Bay, “Masala”. Spice of India prepares traditional Indian dishes, but adds some local flavor and style. Do call ahead to verify open days and times, as they sometimes close for vacation and do not post that on their website!
