Adolescents must go through a tunnel and survive its threats and terrors before they can be considered adults. As The following words appear in the story you’re about to read. You may want to you read this story, think about what the dangerous underwater tunnel means to Jerry, the story’s main character. LITERARY FOCUS: SYMBOLIC MEANING A symbol is something—a person, a place, an object, or an event—that stands both for itself and for something beyond itself. For example, cars are a means of transportation, but in a story a car may also symbolize independence, freedom, maturity, responsibility—or even death. Reading Standard 1.1 Identify and use the literal and figurative meanings of words and understand word derivations. ANALOGIES: MATCHING RELATIONSHIPS In a word analogy, the words in the first pair relate to each other in the same way as the words in a second pair.
