Your Liholiho Laulima is only as effective as its board members and I have to say we have really had very talented, hard-working, and creative group of people this year. Our VP of Membership, Allison Sato (Jax and Jet’s mom) has grown our membership base considerably since she took office and will serve as our next PTA President, bringing her enthusiasm and entrepreneurial skills to our leadership. Our VPs of Fundraising, Ken Aronowitz (Jenny and Kelvin’s dad) and Doris Miocinovic (Petar’s mom) did an awesome job in exceeding our fundraising goal of $27,000 through their creativity and tenacity. They will both be joined next year by two new additional VPs of Fundraising, Ayumi Yamane (Ami and Noah’s mom) and Kamalani Wehrsig (Cade’s mom). Thank you to Alan Aloiau (Archer and Arisa’s dad), for providing financial expertise as our Treasurer. He will be back next year to serve the remainder of his second term. Lara Won (Allena’s mom) did a terrific job as Secretary and will be returning as well. Thank you to our Teacher Representatives, Lisa Sereno and Cathy-Lynne Fong for their service this year. They greatly facilitated communication so the PTA could work effectively with the school’s teachers and staff. Lisa will be returning to the board next year, Cathy-Lynne will be stepping down and Ms. Lindsay Robison will be stepping up to serve on the board. Mahalo to Riki-Ann Chow (Tyler’s mom) and Cheryl Perez (Ava and Isabelle’s mom) who served as this year’s March General Membership Meeting Chairs and will also serve next year. Thank you to our Newsletter Editor, Lawrence So (Leanne and Levin’s dad) for working tirelessly to get the news out in print and in digital format. Arlene Liao (Ka‘imipono’s mom) will be incoming Newsletter Editor next year as Lawrence transitions to Webmaster, replacing Nancy Murayama (Amanda’s mom) who has served two terms in that position. We thank Nancy for all her talent in redesigning our website, for keeping it current, and for contributing many ideas to our board. Thank you to Liane Kaneko (Ryan’s mom) and long-time board member Karen Hisatake (Sierra’s mom) for all their hard work on the Donations Committee. Karen will be retiring from the board as her daughter moves on to middle school; Liane will continue to serve next year. Thank you to Melissa Toyooka (Mattox’s mom) for all her hard work as Special Activities Chair; she will be starting her second term in Special Activities next year, bringing her talent and experience back to our group. Thank you to Shayna Kusumoto (Evan’s mom) for doing an awesome job coordinating her first May General Membership Meeting. Thank you to Staci and Scott Yoshihara (Kaitlin’s parents) for serving so well as Hospitality Chairs. Shayna, Staci and Scott will all be returning to next year’s board. We are forever indebted to Principal Christina Small and PCNC Iris Salazar for their support and guidance; without you our PTA would be a ship without a rudder. Thank you for your dedication to our school and our students. I would also like to acknowledge two other committees from this past school year: our Audit Committee, Alan Kaya, Lawrence So, and Evelyn Shiroma, and our Reflections Art Program Chair, John Shiroma. Thank you for lending us your talents in these much needed areas. Last but not least, Mahalo to all of you, the parents/ guardians, teachers, staff and volunteers who have made my tenure a Blue Ribbon experience. Have a terrific summer and good luck to our graduating students! Michael Lau PTA President Email: [email protected] Hawaiian Plate Lunch Fundraiser Update Thank you for helping to support our fundraising drive to generate much needed funds for playground equipment. Thanks to your support, we raised over $2,000 towards our goal. We still need to raise additional monies to cover the cost of the equipment and landscaping but that will be part of next year’s fundraising budget. Thank you to Liholiho parent Kelly LaRosa Maniti, her company Chubby Chefs, and Liholiho alumni Bazel LaRosa and his Mixed Plate Crew for making and serving the Hawaiian food plates. And thank you Allison Sato and crew for managing the food distribution line. P AGE 4 NA LE O O LIHOLIHO First Graders Embark on International Field Trip G'day Mates! The first graders spent an exciting past few months visiting the world! Each homeroom started their journey in the United States of America where they visited New York City to see the Statue of Liberty; Philadelphia to view the Liberty Bell; and Washington D.C. to tour the White House and Capitol. From there, each class departed for the first "leg" of their worldwide tour to Australia, China, and Japan. The first graders just returned from the last "leg" of their tour . . . just in time to celebrate the end of their first grade year at their Aloha Banquet held at the Pacific Beach Hotel. Ni Hao Ma? This special team of students and teachers hopes that each and every one of you has enjoyed your 2011 - 2012 School Year as much as they have! It has been a year filled with opportunities to practice "thinking clearly", "creating, imagining, innovating", "taking responsible risks", and "thinking interdependently." They were able to practice "flexibility" throughout the year as the students rotated to different classrooms for math, PE, art, and health. The first graders are practicing "Laulima" as they work together to learn and grow with their eyes, ears, and hearts. They are becoming Wonderful Outstanding Warriors and will be ready to lead Liholiho Elementary with responsibility, respectfulness, and safety when they become the graduating class of 2016. Sayonara! The first grade class of 2012 together with their teachers would like to wish each of you a safe and relaxing summer. They hope that it will be a time of celebration, rejuvenation, laughter, and play with loved ones! Love, The first graders and teachers of J-102, J-103, and J-104 From the Desk of the Newsletter Editor My 2 year term as newsletter editor has come to an end and I hope you have enjoyed reading the newsletter as much as I have been assembling all these wonderful, positive articles together month after month! Arlene Liao will be ready with quill in hand to do an outstanding job as the incoming newsletter editor for the next 2 school years. I want to thank the parents/guardians who have signed up to receive the newsletter via email as they have helped us reduce a tremendous amount of paper, ink, and labor required to get the newsletter out to you! I hope we are able to get more folks converted to the electronic format of the newsletter next year. Thank you also to the teachers and staff of Liholiho Elementary for your article and picture submissions. Without you, I’d be out of a job. Thank you to the PTA Board for making the meetings enjoyable and bringing such yummy potluck food. And special THANK YOU to Sheri Murakami (Liholiho office staff) for catching ALL of my mistakes (including this issue) for the past 2 years! My wish to you is that Arlene is a better proofreader than me! One more thank you is to my family for allowing me time on my computer (other than playing games) to work on the newsletter for a National Blue Ribbon School! Have a great summer everyone! Lawrence So, Newsletter Editor NA LE O O LIHOLIHO P AGE 5 PCNC newsletter article for May 2012 Volunteer Appreciation This year’s community and parent volunteers were honored at a luncheon in April for their services to Liholiho Elementary School. Your contribution in making education an exciting and enriching experience for the students of Liholiho is PRICELESS! Teachers and Staff Appreciation Thank you to the parents of the Liholiho Laulima PTA for a delicious dessert, fruits, and refreshing drink during the National Teacher Appreciation Week. Your company, service, and the opportunity to enjoy ourselves were great too! Thank you so much! Box Tops Congratulations to Nikki Yasuda for winning the most Box Tops turned in contest and Mrs. Lopes in Grade 2 & Mrs. Chang in Grade 3 for winning the class contest. So this year’s contests are over. However, you can continue to collect the Box Tops during the summer to count toward next year’s contests. We will be holding similar contests so keep on collecting. Oh, remember to turn in the Box Tops before they expire so our school may get credit for them. Thank you to Mrs. Kimber Kahanu for being the program coordinator this year. Thank you for spending countless hours cutting out, counting, recording, and reporting out results to our Liholiho ‘ohana. We look forward to your help next year.
