Danielle Wright reports on the
State Horse Trials
On May fourth and fifth Mum and I spent the weekend in
Deniliquin at the 2013 State Horse Trials. State is for Grade One
and Two riders, and to be able to qualify I had to compete in three
qualifying horse trials throughout last year and early this year.
We went up with my friend from Whittlesea Pony Club and her
caravan.
On the Friday when we arrived we rode around, along with all the
other competitors, and I was very nervous, watching all of the
riders. After walking the cross country course, there were a few
jumps I wasn’t too sure about; the course was maximum time and had the
maximum obstacles allowed for Grade Two.
On Saturday morning, I got up early and rode Jack for a while, then mum
plaited him up whilst I got ready. Warming up for dressage I was pretty
nervous, because although Jack seems relaxed in the warm-up ring, he
changes a lot when I get in the dressage
arena. In the end I was quite happy with my
test, and ended up 12th out of 26 after
dressage.
We then walked the cross country course
again, this time with a guide – this man was
the course builder. All competitiors who
were interested, got to walk the course
with him, he explained to us what he would
do at each of the jumps and the correct
angle to approach them.
Sunday morning I had my cross country at 9am, so Lauren and I got up at 6am and
walked our cross country course again. As I got into the start box I was very
nervous, as I always am. The lady counted down and I took off. The first jump was
immediately up a hill, and was a big log looking jump with the word
Proud Sponsors of
“DENILIQUIN” painted in huge white letters, and Jack decided he didn’t like

this jump, so he ran out. But I turned him around and he went straight over it. We flew through the course over
the challenging A and B apexes and then around the corner onto a skinny, bright flower jump, which Jack also
didn’t like, but on the second attempt, he jumped it. The rest of the course was fine and we ended up with only
one time penalty, I was very happy at the end because it was a very challenging course and many of the riders
that I had seen go through before and after me were refusing many of the jumps, falling off and getting
eliminated. I was just glad to make it through without being eliminated.
At around 12pm, I did my showjumping, and it was a clear round. Overall I came 15th and to just get around the
cross-country course was good enough for me. State was a really good experience for me, and I look forward to
going again next year, hopefully doing grade one!
Congratulations to Danielle for making it to the State Horse Trials and represented our club so well.
Horse Dentist at Rally
There will be a horse dentist available at this rally. If you would like your
horse’s teeth checked please pop your name down on the whiteboard so
we can allocate you a time.
The cost will be $60 per horse. Please see Cathy for more details.
Regular dental care for your horse is recommended. Unlike our teeth, horse’s teeth continue to erupt or grow
throughout most of their life, especially in their early years. They are also constantly being worn down due to
the
grinding action horses use to chew their feed.
The shape this grinding creates can cause problems. The maxilla (upper jaw) is wider than the mandible (lower
jaw) so the molars don’t sit directly over each other. The outside edges of the upper molars and the inside
edges of the lower molars don’t get ground down at the same rate as the rest of the teeth and become very
sharp. This can cause painful ulcers which can lead to some horses having eating and
behavioural problems. Prevention is the best medicine, so ensure your horse gets regular dental care. Horses
up to six years of age should be checked at least once a year. Older horses every 1 to 2 years.
Club Fees Due
There are still quite a few families who have not yet paid their member fees. Please keep in
mind that these need to be paid by Sunday 19th May (rally).
Membership forms should also accompany the fees to allow us to pass on information to PCAV.
Our Strength Return will be completed next week so if fees and forms are NOT paid we
will assume that riders will not be returning in July. We appreciate your prompt attention
to this matter.

President’s Report
Firstly, I would like to thank the Committee members who have sadly decided to step down from some very
important roles. Without these people the club would not have functioned as well as it has – so a huge thank
you to you all. I would like to make special mention to Rachel Smith who has done a great job of keeping our
bellies full! Thanks Rach.
Secondly, I would like to welcome our new committee members and look forward to us all working together to
make Pony Club a fun and enjoyable place for our riders.
Since the last rally, there have been a few things going on.
A big well done to Danielle Wright for representing our club and Central Zone by riding at the State Horse Trails
in Grade 2. I am sure it would have been a blast.
Also, a number of participants attended a First Aid course presented by Primary Survey, which was very
informative and designed to give us the skills needed to provide First Aid when needed. As a club, we need to
make sure we have someone who has Level 2 First Aid training. We now have seven Level 2 first aiders! Thank
you to Donna Green for making this happen.
It seemed that setting up the showjumps on a Saturday afternoon was a success as it took a lot of pressure off
on the pony club morning. We will try to continue to do this wherever possible.
This rally we will also be trialling a new system to allow the harness horses coming off the track to do so safely.
Witches hats will be placed out to make a pathway to give the harness horses the right of way. So please when
you are crossing over with your pony, just stop and check if any other horses are on this pathway, and if so,
please let them go past first. This is just a small request from the Racing Club which should help prevent any
accidents.
Not only do we have a rally this week, but we also can enjoy the big Mustad Lowdens’ Birthday Sale. Mustad
Lowdens have also kindly offered for us to run a sausage sizzle on Saturday.
Our sausage sizzle fundraisers always end up being a bit of fun and I would like to thank everyone who has
donated their time and goods for this day.
See you all on the weekend,
Lisa
Efficiency Certificates
This rally we will be trying to get all of our riders who have been working
towards their D and D* certificates tested. Can these riders please meet
with Lisa at the start of rally please.
C Certificate kids will need to meet with Cathy and can you please return
your completed C Certificate books to Lisa by May 31st so that they can be
forwarded to Zone for corrections. Thanks.

New XC Jumps!
The latest news is that (all going well) the first of our new
cross country jumps should be ready and in place on our
cross country course by Sunday’s rally. I have spied them
at Anne and Albert Putker’s and they look fantastic!
Next up is a new ditch complex which Albert will start
working on soon. We are also putting in a grant
application to Mitchell Shire Council for funds for more
new cross country jumps. If you are able to
donate any timber or other materials (especially treated
pine posts) please let Lisa or Jeanette know.
Above is an example only and not a photo of our
new jumps. But it did get me thinking ... perhaps a
lovely ditch and palisade should be on Albert’s “To
Do” list!!
