Armstrong Spallumcheen BRITISH COLUMBIA CANADA PHOTO CREDIT: Al Price History and culture abounds in Armstrong Spallumcheen! Prior to the incorporation of Spallumcheen and Armstrong, the village of Lansdowne was located on the bench above the valley where Armstrong is now located. With the coming of the railway in 1891, the route selected for the Shuswap and Okanagan railway bypassed the village. By 1892, many of the buildings from Lansdowne, including the Anglican Church, eventually moved to the community of Armstrong and as a consequence the village of Lansdowne disappeared. After the Township of Spallumcheen was incorporated in 1892, the council of the day felt that in order to encourage the growth of the business community in Armstrong, without compromising agriculture and farming, that two municipalities should be formed. In 1913, the City of Armstrong was officially separated from the Township. PHOTO CREDIT: Al Price For over 100 years, these warm and vibrant communities have offered a myriad of activities and attractions for visitors and many opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Artisan cheese and chocolate, flour mills, vineyards, asparagus farms and several farmers markets all fit into a community that is blessed with an abundance of agricultural opportunities and heritage. Other cultural experiences include artisans, a museum and art gallery, the Interior Provincial Exhibition, Harvest Pumpkin Festival, live theatre (indoor and out), hiking and biking – plus year-round equestrian and other sports events.
