Who is HopeShares Canada?
HopeShares Canada was created in 2008 by a
dedicated group of volunteers who saw Seed of
Hope South Africa’s need for financial support.
Our approach at HopeShares is to provide the
resources and funding needed to educate,
disciple and support the individuals at the
centre of their communities.
As a Canadian organization we are committed
to working with the South African community we
support to develop and equip locally-based
leaders who in turn restore their own
communities from within.
What We Do
• Gather and distribute financial resources to
support community based educational,
economic, social, spiritual, and health
programs.
• Empower local people to alleviate social
health care, life skills and vocational
training.
• Integrate the teaching of God’s love, grace,
and redemption into all areas of the
community’s development.
poverty through leadership development,
Community We Support
HopeShares Canada supports Seed of Hope
Community Development Association which is
located in the South African community of
Bhekulwandle. This semi-rural area sits on the
outskirts of metropolitan Durban, in the province
of KwaZulu-Natal.
Getting Started with Host for Hope
Choose a date/time/suggested minimum
donation for your gathering. It can be in
honour of a special celebration – birthday,
anniversary, graduation – or simply a fun
night together with friends or family.
Depending on who you’re inviting, you
can set the suggested minimum donation
at whatever amount you feel most
comfortable.
Send us an event outline. We’d love to hear
what you’re planning and offer any
support you might need.
Customize your invitation. An invitation template is
available for you to personalize with date/time/location/suggested donation
information, along with a special message to your guests.
Start an online fundraising page (if you choose). You have the option to collect gifts online
if that would be more convenient for your guests. Visit CanadaHelps.org to create your
page and send the link with your invite to your guests. View a guide here to setting up
your fundraising on CanadaHelps.
Plan your menu. We have collected some favorite South African recipes for you to consider
for your event. Check out local resources for South African food stores.
Host your event. A Host for Hope event should include the following:
African décor (do as much or as little as you’d like!)
Information sheets and donation cards available for each guest
Video presentation available online http://hopeshares.ca/videos/
Submitting donations. Following your event, you can summarize your donations on a
donation tracking sheet and send one cheque to HopeShares Canada. We’d also love
to hear how your event went so send us an email at [email protected]
Post your party pics on Facebook (hopeshares), or Twitter/Instagram with #hopeshares and
#hostforhope
Send out Thank You notes. Create a customized Thank You note to send to your friends
after the dinner and let them know how much was raised to help support life-changing
programs for kids and families at the Seed of Hope in South Africa.
Thank you so much for your help in raising awareness for HopeShares as well as funds.
Together we will continue to see the life changing community development work happen at
Seed of Hope in South Africa.

Hosting Guide
You’ve decided to throw a Host for
Hope event…wonderful! Now what?
Here are a few suggestions that might
help as you plan your gathering.
THREE WEEKS IN ADVANCE
•
Prepare your guest list. Think of
how many people you are able to
host and start making a list of
names and contact info.
•
If you’re hand delivering or
mailing your invites, print off the
customizable template with the
appropriate info filled in.
•
If you’re emailing your invite, or
posting it on your Facebook
page, create your custom invite
online.
ONE WEEK IN ADVANCE
•
Purchase your groceries and
start any preparations which can
be done in advance
(decorations, food prep, etc.)
•
Plan out your evening using
elements from the Program
Outline as appropriate for your
venue (home, church,
community centre, yard, etc.)
TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE
•
Send out or deliver your invites
and follow up for RSVPs as
necessary.
•
Start planning your menu.
Recipes are available online by
clicking here.
•
Search the web for local South
African markets and meat shops.
They will have a wide range of
products which will add a special
flare to your evening.
•
If you’re so inclined, you may
want to do a trial run of a recipe
to ensure no surprises on the
day of your event!
DAY OF THE EVENT
•
Get cooking, organize the buffet
or set the table…all the regular
things you would do if you were
hosting some friends for dinner.
Remember, this is meant to be a
fun and casual event…which
brings hope to those who need it!
AFTER THE EVENT
•
Send tracking form and
donations as directed.
•
Send Thank You cards to your
guests.
Suggested Elements for Your Event
Here are are few ideas that you
may wish to incorporate into your
event.
Info table: Create a space for
donation cards and information
regarding HopeShares. If you have a
laptop, you can set it up and have it
open to the HopeShares or Seed of
Hope website.
African décor or music: If you have
access to some items or music that
would bring a South African flare to
your event, by all means, this is the
time to bring them out. If you search
South Africa in GooglePlay Music you
can find different play lists which will
add a fun background ambience.
HopeShares Video Presentation: If
you can easily play a video on your
TV via AirPlay or through your
computer, you can play the current
HopeShares videos http://
hopeshares.ca/videos/ for your
guests.
Movies about South Africa: If you
have a small group over, perhaps you
could show a movie that gives people
a better idea of the life and struggles
in South Africa. You can find a list of
movies here:
http://theseedofhope.org/learn/
movies/
Short Personal Presentation: Let
people know why HopeShares is
important to you. Keep it short, but
take the time to tell them about your
involvement/connection and thank
them for joining you in supporting the
cause.

History of Seed of Hope South Africa
Seed of Hope began in just one room of a disused
building on the rural outskirts of Durban. In 2003,
founders Derek and Heather Liebenberg and a
small core of volunteers felt the call to respond to
the AIDS crisis and its impact on families in
KwaZulu Natal. At that time, the HIV pandemic
was unchecked, as anti-retroviral medications
were not yet widely available.
The Liebenbergs launched an afternoon drop-in
program for children who would otherwise be left
alone and at risk of drifting into mischief, gangs or
other dangerous behaviour. The classes were fun, teaching games, songs, crafts, Bible
lessons and life skills. Soon dozens of children were attending daily and the program had
been given a name – Simunye Time. Simunye means “we are one” in Zulu.
In the following months, the childrenʼs program gave birth to strategies to help people
access basic health care, a support group for HIV-positive community members, and a
small sewing class for unemployed women. Many of their clients were deeply affected by
the HIV pandemic and suffered heartbreaking losses. It was a time when hope was
scarce in the community of Bhekulwandle. The vision to equip local community members
to overcome challenges was birthed through the experiences and resilience of these
friends and neighbours.
Two years after its small
beginnings, Seed of Hope
was visited by King
Goodwill Zwelithini, who
presided over a grand
opening ceremony and
gave the organization his
blessing. Such recognition
brought momentum and a
sense of optimism.
Sadly however, Derek Liebenberg passed away before the end of 2005. Despite this tragedy,
the local staff and volunteers persevered in their faith and commitment to serving the community.
Soon they were joined by Carl Waldron, whose vision built on the foundation established by the
Liebenbergs, bringing growth and
greater impact to Seed of Hope’s
work over the years.
Seed of Hope’s early emphasis on
relieving community needs has
grown to encompass a wider view
of empowerment and holistic
development. We recognize that a
community’s problems are rooted in
deeper issues: lack of confidence,
deep-rooted dependency and a
shortage of selfless leadership.
The mission of Seed of Hope is about responding to needs, equipping leaders and mobilizing
communities to address their own issues. The process begins by recognizing the resources and
strengths that already exist in the community. The programs they offer have continued to
develop and inspire real, lasting change in the areas of health, children’s development and
vocational skills training.
Messaging for Asking for a Donation
The following is a suggested message you can use to ask the attendees at your event to
consider making a donation to HopeShares and the work of Seed of Hope.
It was our (my) hope that tonight could be a night of information and inspiration about
HopeShares Canada and the work they support at a community-development centre
called Seed of Hope in rural township just outside of Durban, South Africa.
From the video and pictures, I hope you can see that the work done at Seed of Hope is
making an incredible difference in this community.
And while the work done through HopeShares at Seed of Hope South Africa is
extensive…the operating budget is not. Sound financial management and stewardship of
$291,000 a year helps them minister to hundreds of children and their families in the area.
Those who have been there know that every dollar is having a huge impact and giving
hope – not with a hand out, but with a hand up.
HopeShares is grateful to many monthly and annual donors who support the cause and
make this work possible. Our dinner/event tonight is going to add to the support and will
play a vital role in continuing this important ministry…so thank you for coming.
By making a donation, you are planting a seed of hope in the lives of the young children
and teens you’ve seen on the videos…and with that hope, communities will be changed
and restored.
I hope you enjoyed our special feast tonight. I was pleased to prepare it as my treat to
you.
Please take a donation card if you haven’t already done so. If you’d be able to fill it out
tonight, that would be wonderful.
There will be a basket by the door
where your envelopes can be placed
before you leave. If you’d like more
information, I’d be happy to chat with
you privately.
Thanks so much for coming!
