Wawota News-in-Five is a weekly news brief sponsored by the local Lions Club in co-operation with the Town of Wawota, R.M.
of Walpole #92 & R.M. of Wawken #93. News-in-Five will not go into local mail boxes but will be made available at various local
businesses every Friday.
There will be no charge for community upcoming events, announcements or appreciations. At present commercial
advertisements and/or articles for sale will cost (per issue) 3"x4" or smaller - $2; ¼ page - $5; ½ page or whole page to be
printed by you for insert - price negotiable. Advertisements can be run weekly, once a month, or desired frequency.

WHAT A GREAT WEEKEND !!
The Heritage Weekend/Ranch Rodeo on July 29th & 30th was a great success!! Even the weatherman offered us
his full cooperation. The MRRA Ranch Rodeo provided spectators with many different events – with lots of action.
From the bidding for teams at the beginning on Friday, to the flag bearers, to every event we viewed, we are sure
spectators found something to watch and enjoy.
The supper, the beer gardens, the cabaret – and lastly the awesome
fireworks display – what a way to end the first day of the celebration.
On Saturday we enjoyed the pancake breakfast and then were treated to
more rodeo action plus so much more … There were food vendors offering
a great variety of “munchies” – hot dogs, hamburgers, curly French fries,
candy floss, ice cream, salad plates, pies, cinnamon buns, a variety of coffees
… we could go on and on! The booths at the Trade Show appeared to have
lots of interest. The Show and Shine was also popular as well as the musical
entertainment and tossing horseshoes. Children events were enjoyed by all – face painting, Wandering Wally, the
“balloon lady”, the dunk tank, bouncies, and of course, the slip ‘n’ slide. The candy scramble during the noon
intermission at the rodeo arena saw a great number of children racing around the “barrels” to fill their bags with
candy. If you were so inclined, you could stop at the Museum’s Photo Booth and get your photo taken. There was
the pie baking contest and then the pie eating contest. And on Sunday what a beautiful day for the Community
Church Service in the Park with an abundance of food at the pot luck lunch after. Definitely there was
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE all weekend!!
But we know events like this just don’t “happen” - it takes a lot of work & planning --- HATS OFF &
CONGRATULATIONS to the planning committee – you did a great job! And a BIG THANK YOU to all the
volunteers who took time out of their busy lives to help make these two days such a success and to the clubs who
organized and sponsored the various events. THANK YOU also to all the local &/or corporate sponsors who
helped make the weekend such a successful celebration.

WANDERING THOUGHTS
(as we see them)
Well, Wawota, you’ve done it again!! When naysayers said it wouldn’t work, we proved them wrong – the 1st
ever Ranch Rodeo in conjunction with the Annual Heritage Weekend in the Valley was a great success! From 2
p.m. on Friday ‘til 4 p.m. on Saturday, the Valley was a hub of activity – something happening for every age
group! The food vendors satisfied every taste bud with ‘curly spuds” to “pie a la mode” – and everything inbetween…pancake breakfast, beef on a bun, chicken on a stick, cold plate, cinnamon buns, hot dogs,
hamburgers, etc. Speaking with organizers, it sound like this event could become an annual event – once the
bills are all paid, a decision will be made. No doubt some things weren’t done perfectly this year, and if they
were, there’d be nothing to improve on for next year! The committee is asking for comments (for and against) to
consider for NEXT YEAR! Hats off to the organizers and volunteers – job well done!
Thank goodness the weekend had some positive happenings – not so in Rider camp! Yes, you guessed right,
we chose the Green & White over the Alouettes! All this has made it necessary to make a ruling that a person
cannot win on the Forum Riders’ pool and the Riders’ “personal pool” in the same week! Maybe making the bet
from a different side of the country might help – we’re going to try!
Music in the Park changed to “Music in the Corral” on the 30th. The Three L’s & One
offered a few hours of entertainment in the Valley for the rodeo public.
Have you noticed the fire hydrants in Town have taken on a new face-lift … all are red now changing from the
“little people” that adorned each one (some adjacent to a facility, i.e. nurse at hospital, etc.)
And the weather – seems that every day brings the worry of a storm with the high temps and high humidity. The
last night of July delivered some heavy rain and a few large hail stones. As of writing, our Meteorologist on Main
reports 13 ½ inches since mid-April and not recording what the spider drank!
Hearing many “bouquets” for the fireworks show on Heritage Weekend – we have experienced
some awesome displays over the years, however this one “takes-the-cake” … again BRAVO
organizing committee – and thank you to the sponsors!

It is a condition when a person has the
feeling that they cannot take one more
job/responsibility – and be effective! It will
affect everyday life – diet, sleep,

else’s problem.
To learn to say “NO – enough is enough”, is
one way to avoid a letdown. In some cases,
a complete change of schedule will also help.

“UP, UP & AWAY”
The “flying public” are dealing with some
recently announced changes to air travel
locally.
Delta Airlines discontinued the
Regina/Minneapolis service on July 31st –
this service has been in place for 21 years.
And Delta had a computer-glitch that
grounded all its flights this past week.
West Jet will be starting a Regina-toOrlando service in October to April – a nonstop flight.
Also West Jet is trying a trial service from
Brandon to Toronto – began in June going
‘til September – a direct flight. Flights from
Brandon to the west have been in operation
for awhile.
IT’S SLIPPING AWAY
Summer, that is… before we know it, harvest will be in
full swing and school will have begun another year!
The daylight hours are getting less each day – seems
as though we just started to enjoy the longer daylight
hours.
