I have three radio’s tuned to KPOJ; one in the kitchen, keeps me company while cooking and cleaning; another in my bedroom, wakes me each morning, and finally, a little wide band transistor radio sits atop my desk at work. I also listen to KPOJ on my laptop at I Heart Radio. While I may sometimes listen to OPB or KBOO, 620 a.m. is by far, my favorite radio station on the dial. To understand how rich and rare this station is, one must look at the national statistics: As of 2007, 91% of Talk Radio was conservative, leaving 9% for progressive views. Each weekday 2,570 and fifteen minutes of conservative talk are broadcast, compared to 254 hours of progressive talk (ten times more!); 76% of the top ten radio markets are conservative, while only 24% is progressive. These numbers certainly do not reflect the electorate of our country. In other words, what is available to us on the radio is not reflective of where we stand, politically or socially, by any means. I consider KPOJ to be a refuge; an education; a great source of current events information and interviews, I will not find elsewhere. In addition to listening to KPOJ every day, I support their advertisers. This is a for-profit station run by Clear Channel, whose central interest is profit. This is why KPOJ has recently began playing Beaver’s games. It is my hope that they will stop there and that my favorite radio station will not transition to sports radio. My top three shows on KPOJ are: Carl Wolfson, (local), 6:00-9:00 a.m., weekdays; Thom Hartmann, (national) 9:00noon, weekdays; and on Saturdays, Ring of Fire. Two of the most popular shows on KPOJ are Ed Schultz and Randi Rhodes. You can get the full programming schedule at www.kpoj.com. If you haven’t given KPOJ a listen, I encourage you to do so- and support their advertisers. This is truly a gem of a radio station that depends on it’s listeners to keep it going! Do You Have a Story to Tell? If you have an interesting story, a piece of neighborhood news, or something else to contribute to the Ramona’s monthly newsletter, send it to [email protected]. We’ll do our best to include it in an upcoming issue. Ramona Apartments Newsletter | April 2012 | www.TheRamona.com 3 Manager’s Corner continued from p. 1 Tuesday morning. Please do not bring items to the loading dock prior to Junk Day. Early Bird Winner March’s early bird drawing winners were Steven Strop and April Russo. Be entered into the drawing for a chance to win a $25 gift certificate by paying your rent on or before the 1st of the month. Internet Update In last month’s newsletter we incorrectly announced that the building’s internet system had been upgraded. Our Integra rep had been out to work on the upgrade, but had not yet completed the job. The full upgrade should be completed this month and the system should run a bit faster than it previously did. Breakfast Fundraiser for Southwest Charter School, Saturday, April 21st, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Join other Ramona residents in the Community Room on April 21st for a home cooked pancake breakfast. This fundraiser, hosted by Ramona resident Mamie Stafford, will raise funds for Southwest Charter School’s end of the year fieldtrip to Seattle. SWCS is a small K-8 charter school located at the end of the Portland streetcar line in the South Waterfront neighborhood. There are currently at least three students who attend SWCS that live at the Ramona. Drop by for some breakfast and visit with neighbors. You can find more information about SWCS by visiting the school’s website - www.swcharter.org. Let’s Prepare Together – An Emergency Planning Workshop, April 18, 5:30-8:00 pm Northwest Neighborhood Cultural Center 1819 NW Everett Learn how to reduce the risk to you, your family, and/or business in the event of a major emergency—such as a devastating earthquake. Featured speakers will share easy and practical ways to help you get prepared. Children’s activities, snacks, and door prizes! Coordinated by NWDA, Neighbors West-Northwest, the Office of Neighborhood Involvement and the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management. Heads Up: Two Building Inspections in May We have two important inspections coming up next month that all residents should be aware of. On Tuesday, May 8th the Ramona’s investors will be visiting the building to conduct their first year inspection. In compliance with our funding requirements, we will need to enter a small number of apartments on that day. Also in early May (date not yet confirmed) we’ll be conducting an inspection of the entire building with our contractor. We are coming to the end of the building’s one-year warranty on all the construction and materials. 4 Please let us know now if there is anything that is broken or not working correctly in your apartment so we can have it fixed while the building is still under warranty. We do plan to enter every apartment during this inspection to make sure that all the original construction work is in tact and functioning correctly. We will give you plenty of advance notice and won’t spend very long in each apartment. Keep an eye out for more detailed information well in advance of both inspections.
