For more information read this booklet and check the website www.visittartu.com Events 1 June Koidu Spring Fair Koidu St 13 yard kultuuriaken.tartu.ee Come to the fair of Karlova district! 1 June “Viss 2007“ Estonian Agricultural Museum www.epm.ee Exhibition-contest of Estonian red cattle, children’s museum programme „Shepherd-Boy is the King“, a fair. Children can choose their favourite calf. The international milk day is celebrated with separating cream and making butter. Craftsmen and folk musicians. 1 June – 31 August Summer in Genialistid Club Genialistid Club www.genklubi.ee Genialistid Club is a unique initiative without a deadline in the Lutsu Theatre House. The club unites diverse cultural events - plays and concerts, film nights and lectures. The bandwagon of serial events has started off successfully, new ones will be started: „Selection of Academics“, „From upon Pillows“, „Band Camp“ and „Author’s Song“ go on, the autumn festival is being prepared, „Selection of Theatre People“ – a modification of „Selection of Academics“ –, and „Patterns of World“ will be pulled off. What the summer brings, noone knows, not even GenClub. Let’s see what will happen. The whole of GenClub is impossible to express in words. At least half has to remain a surprise. So, attention! 1 June GenClub presents: “Selection of Theatre People” Genialistid Club www.genklubi.ee The first event of the modification of the academics’ disco series is dedicated to the premiere of the play „War of Roses“ at Leigo on 1 June. „Selection of Theatre People“ is a dance party where music is selected by theatre people. Clearly less intellectual than the academics’ party but at least as cool! DJs from home and abroad: dj Kersti Heinloo, dj Maarja Jakobson, dj Andres Keil, dj Tõnu Lensment, dj Sulev Teppart, dj Janek Joost, dj Aarne Soro, dj Meelis Rämmeld, dj Uku Uusberg, dj Tarmo Prangel. A wild party all night long! 1–3 June Antonius Guild Courtyard Days or Whitsunday Feast Antonius Guild courtyard www.antonius.ee During three days, city people are offered a diverse cultural programme and interesting workshops for the little visitors. On Friday and Saturday, evening concerts take place. Part of the courtyard days is a fair. 2 June Folk Costumes Day Estonian National Museum www.erm.ee The folk costumes day brings together those who know well folk costumes, those who have studied folk costumes and those who wish to do so. Everyone who has questions about restoring, making or buying folk costumes is welcome to get advice! A presentation of this year’s final collections from Tartu folk costume making school and an exhibition of folk costumes. 4–8 June Tartu Youngsters Music and Film Days City of Tartu and its surroundings kultuuriaken.tartu.ee During 5 days the youngsters, instructed by professionals, produce a video for the song „Let’s Go Fly“ by Kati Siht. The activities take place in the form of thematic workshops: rhythm and vocals, acting skills, dance, video art. 5 June International seminar “How to Display Folk Costumes “ Estonian National Museum www.erm.ee The seminar takes place in the framework of the Estonian-Finnish exhibition „Living Folk Costume – Folk Costume Tradition in Estonia and Finland“. 15–16 June Major event “Kalev Vapper Graduates” Tartu Higher Art School courtyard www.zone.ee/ideekonkurss “... in other words, defending my final project is my final project“, said Kalev Vapper in a radio interview. He invites everyone to the yard of the art school, as he needs defence from the exam board. All posters, banners, statements supporting his graduation are welcome! 16–17 June Open Saturdays at Singing Studio Musaklubi Rooms of the NGO Musaklubi www.musaklubi.ee Everyone interested in singing is welcome. Age does not count, come with the whole family! You have a chance to discover the different nuances of your voice, develop your breathing and be in an inspirational environment. In order to stay young and healthy for a long time, one does not need to become a professional singer – it is enough to make singing your hobby. 23 June Midsummer Day’s Bonfire of City of Tartu at Raadi Estonia National Museum www.erm.ee This year’s Midsummer Day is celebrated very prestigiously – Raadi welcomes the flame from the President. An interesting Midsummer Day party for kids, youngsters, adults and seniors. A variety of artists, exhibition, tours and orienteering contest. As appropriate to a true Midsummer Eve, a big bonfire and village swing are not missing, either. 23 June Midsummer Eve of Luunja County Luunja Song Festival Grounds www.luunja.ee/kultuurimaja 29 June Tartu City Day Town Hall Square, Town Hall, City Museum, O. Luts House Museum, Athena, churches www.tartu.ee/rahvakultuur The guardian saints of medieval Tartu were the apostles St Peter and St John, whose attributes, the key and sword, adorn the coat-of-arms of Tartu. Since 2003, Tartu City Day has been celebrated on St Peter and Paul Day, 29 June. Cultural and entertainment programme! 29 June Tartu City Day Papermaking Workshop Estonian Postal Museum www.post.ee It is easy to make paper by yourself! A hand-made leaf of paper is perfect for a postcard. 5–8 July III International Wind Band Festival “The Roaring Horn” City of Tartu www.PoTartu.ee The wind orchestra Tartu welcomes everyone: during four days one can acquire new skills in workshops, play in a big joint orchestra, show the skills of one’s group or orchestra and see what others are doing. Orchestras as well as single musicians are welcome. The festival will be attended by six foreign groups: Tótkomlós Youth Wind Symphonic Band (Hungary), Puhallinorkesteri SUMU and Heinola Big-Band (Finland), wind orchestras Madona and Vidzeme (Latvia). For the first time, professional groups also take part: Estonian Border Guard Orchestra (conductors Arvi Miido and Margus Kasemaa) and Estonian Border Guard Big Band (conductor Siim Aimla). This year’s guest conductors and teachers are Bert Langerer (Netherlands) and Colin Cranson (U.K.). Acrobats from Denmark perform at the final day’s carnival. 13–15 July Tartu Hanseatic Days “History Lives!” Tartu city centre www.hansapaevad.ee This year’s Hanseatic Days are special because they bring history to life. In the city centre, three eras are born reviving the history of Tartu: the ancient period in River City, Hanseatic period in Jaani City and the awakening period in Town City. Workshops of craftsmen and artists, concerts and a big fair, children get their own city and good mood is ensured for everyone. In the inner courtyard of Domus Dorpatensis, a Hanseatic cafe provides food for body and soul (concerts, exhibition). It is worth to be in Tartu during the Hanseatic Days! The museum offers three workshops: a scriptorium, papermaking and seal workshop. 14 July Ahhaa, Magdeburg Hemispsheres on Emajõgi! River Emajõgi ahhaa.ee The famous 400-year-old scientific experiment “Miracle: Vacuum!” is now repeated in collaboration of German Culture Institute and Science Centre AHHAA. In the original experiment Otto von Guericke pumped the system of two half-spheres empty of air, after which even eight pairs of horses could not separate the metal sphere. During the Hanseatic Days dozens of horsepowers are used to try to beat the air pressure. Boats Jõmmu and Pegasus take part, music by a wind orchestra. 14 July Hanseatic Games Courtyard Inner courtyard of Tartu Toy Museum www.mm.ee A medieval style event for everyone interested in games. One can try out Hanseatic skill and table games, walking with sticks and rolling hoops, writing on a wax board and shaping game pieces out of clay. Three times a day the children’s tournament with „horses“ tests the hitting precision of riders. Needle maidens show how to make fancy handicraft. Medieval music is performed by an early music ensemble. For free! 16 July XX International Folklore Festival „Baltica 2007“ Day in Tartu Antonius Guild courtyard kultuuriaken.tartu.ee Children’s programme during the day grows into Tartu County party by the evening. At the main concert in the evening, best folklore groups of Tartu County perform together with festival guests. Musicians from Costa Rica, folklore groups from Cretan island and Belarus have promised to come to Tartu. 29 July Open shooting of the TV show „Sing Along“ Luunja rose garden www.luunja.ee/kultuurimaja 15 August Rye Harvesting Day Estonian Agricultural Museum www.epm.ee We will reap rye with a sickle, thresh rye, grind flour with a quern, bake and taste bread. Horse ride from the field to the museum. 17–20 August II River Emajõgi Festival River Emajõgi and its banks kultuuriaken.tartu.ee During the festival concerts, a fishing contest, a barbeque contest, presentations of water vehicles on the river and on the banks take place. A boat cinema with film programmes and workshops are also open. 25–26 August Extreme sports festival „Extreme Battle 2007“ Town Hall Square www.extreme-battle.com The festival brings to Tartu about a hundred extreme sports enthusiasts from Estonia and abroad. The Town Hall Square becomes a sports park: crazy and dangerous air rides on wheels, a cross race contest, skilful riders in trial contest and BMX flatland area, best waterboarders on the river Emajõgi, skateboarders, rollerskaters and scooter-riders. Competition in altogether 15 disciplines. Audience is provided adrenalin by benji-jump and sky jump. A cycling competition for up to 8-year-olds. 28 August – 2 September Film Festival „tARTuFF – Love’s Various Faces“ Town Hall Square, Athena Centre, Tartu University Library www.tartuff.ee In programme are films at Town Hall Square and Athena centre, a conference „Religion Tolerance“ in Tartu University Library. Altogether 24 films are shown: 12 screenings at Town Hall Square and 12 conference screenings in Athena. The focus of the films is on variations of love and similarly to the last year, each day has its own topic. The opening and closing topics remain the same: „What is love?“ and „Happy end“. After the concert, drawing competition for children, prizes! 1 June – 31 August Promenade concert “Emajõe Summer 2007” City of Tartu www.PoTartu.ee Over the summer, promenade concerts with varied programme take place in the most beautiful places in Tartu. Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and soloists, Renaissance orchestra, texts are read by Taavi Eelmaa. 13 July Concert of Johanson and Brothers Tartu St John’s Church www.concert.ee The sister and three brothers of Johanson family continue weather observation, looking for help from older and newer songs from folk 14 July Concert „Stylus fantasticus“ Tartu St Peter’s Church kultuuriaken.tartu.ee A performance by the organist Ines Maidre with the violinists Eugen and Ingmar Simson-Valtin. Improvisations, rhetoric and dazzling imagination of the Baroque period in the works of Dietrich Buxtehure, Antonio Vivaldi and Johann S. Bach. 14 July Concert of Vox Clamantis with musicians from Cameroon Tartu St John’s Church www.concert.ee Gregorian chant deriving from the Catholic tradition of Western Europe is performed side by side with traditional African music from the same era, which is a mix of melody, rhythms, colourful costumes and movement. Traditional African instruments balafons are used. 14 July Awakening Period Concert Town Hall Square www.hansapaevad.ee One of the highlights of this year’s Hanseatic Days! A big concert in the spirit of the national awakening period: essential and outstanding thematic Estonian pieces from the past two centuries are performed by well-known as well as surprise line-ups. 17 July Concert of I International Church Music Summer Academy Tartu St Peter’s Church www.finst.ee/suveakadeemia.html Organ concert: Kari Vuola (Finland), whole organ works of J. Brahms. For free. 18 July Concert of Riho Sibul, Robert Jürjendal, Peeter Malkov Trio Tartu St John’s Church www.concert.ee The trio’s programme contains works of the performers themselves, selected pieces and free improvisation. The concert is joined together by Estonian poetry classics and singing by Riho Sibul. The trio’s soundscape balances acoustic guitar and flute with live electronics and virtual instruments. 18 July Beloved Songs from Cherished Composers Tartu St Peter’s Church www.kontsert.ee In the new programme of Jassi Zahharov, songs of various composers receive a new and vigorous interpretation by the master, accompanied by the pianist Evald Raidma. 20 July “Glasperlenspiel” presents: Grigoryan Guitar Duo (Australia) Vanemuine Concert Hall www.concert.ee Slava Grigoryan and Len Grigoryan, in programme: Debussy, Mompou, de Falla, E Grigoryan, Westlake, York, Towner. The Grigoryan brothers have been repeatedly named the most original and dazzling guitar duo of the last decade. Despite youth they can boast a number of victories at contests and performances in renowned concert places. The Estonian tour includes in addition to a relatively classical repertoire (Claude Debussy, Manuel de Falla) also music on the borders of classical, jazz and folk (Ralph Towner, Andrew York). 21 July Plink-Plonk Tartu Song Festival Grounds grass part www.plinkplonk.ee 25 July Weekend Guitar Trio’s concert “To the Orbit” Tartu St John’s Church www.concert.ee Electric guitars trio, which can at times sound like a symphonic orchestra, creates mostly playful music which is difficult to classify, but attracts in its multiplicity of rhythms and offers surprises. It is original contemporary music, synthesised out of minimalism, jazz, ethno, rock music and spontaneous improvisation. 27 July Australian native music and dance theatre Descendance Vanemuine Concert Hall www.concert.ee Descendance is one of the biggest dance companies of Australian native people, focused on everything related to native people. The goal is not only to stage concerts – in workshops everyone can try accordion playing and talk to the musicians. 10 August Concert in St Peter’s Church Tartu St Peter’s Church kultuuriaken.tartu.ee Performance by the Swedish cellist Ann- Mari Lahti and the organist of St Peter’s Church, Anneli Klaus. 11 August Urmas Vulp, Külli Kudu, Heiki Mätlik: “Northern Lights in Music” Tartu St John’s Church www.concert.ee New programme of chamber music by Edvard Grieg and Jean Sibelius. The sounds reveal emotions of platonic love and pain of lost love. The crisp accords reflect nature’s poetry and northern tunes evoke images of dances of trolls. The blend of violin, accordion and guitar is ideal to express all this. All the music has been arranged by Heiki Mätlik especially for this line-up, it could also be called the new premiere of the works. 15 August Concert of Raivo Tafenau’s Quartet Tartu University Botanical Gardens www.concert.ee The basis of the quartet is this time hammond organ, played skilfully by the founder of the Finnish organ players school Mikko Helevä. The ensemble’s musical preferences are rooted in swing and Latin music, from which develops modern rhythm music with interesting and lively soundscape. In addition to original music, the programme includes works by Estonian composers and best world music authors. 19 August Broadway Gala Tartu Song Festival Grounds www.vanemuine.ee The summer’s biggest musical concert presents hits from unforgettable musicals from Broadway, performed by top soloists Carolin Fortenbacher (Germany), Helen Hobson (U.K.), Matt Rawle (U.K.), Stephen Hansen (Norway), Gerli Padar, Liisi Koikson, Janika Sillamaa, Vaiko Eplik, Hannes Kaljujärv, Aivar Tommingas. The conductor is Tarmo Leinatamm, the host Mart Sander. Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra, opera choir, band. 1 June Children’s play “Bringing of Summer” Big House of Vanemuine Theatre www.rahvamuusikakool.ee A play intertwined with American Indian fairytales and tunes by the Estonian Folk Music School. It is a story about brave children who save their tribe from a harsh winter. She has taken interest in the idiosyncrasy of the material recorded there and its display, relations of artificial worlds created in museums and audience. The gaze of Kiiler’s camera is subjective and it is a separate question whether her photos would suit to represent the institution’s official self-image. But this is not her purpose.
