About the Cover........
CRAB, what an event!! As a new member of
SVR PCA, I was amazed by the whole
weekend. I still think about how much fun
the weekend was. From the reception and
registration on Friday evening all the way
through the last of the Beer ‘n Brats on a warm
Sunday afternoon with Autocrossing,
Touring, Rallying, Banqueting, AutoCircusing,
Concours, a Waking Tour, Beautiful Porsches,
and socializing with a wonderful group of
people thrown in between. How can so
many events be thrown together in one
weekend? A lot of organization!!!
Our thanks to the whole CRAB team led
by Dwight and Linda Mitchell. Good luck to
Kerner Breaux as he starts the preparation for
CRAB 31. Yes, he is already starting because
CRAB preparation is a yearlong job for a large
group. The CRAB 30 team is pictured on
page 10 this month. Thanks again CRAB 30
team.

What a Weekend for CRAB 30
The weekend couldn’t have possibly been
much better. I had been looking at the weather
reports all week long and it kept looking
like we were in for rain. And we had rain,
but it was just on Friday night during the
welcome reception. Saturday and Sunday
were beautiful and I know several people,
including myself, that got more sun than
they wanted. I experienced many highlights
during the weekend, but two of them are
worth mentioning. I saw Dwight Mitchell’s
former race car at the autocross and thought
how beautiful and well kept it was. Even
though I’ve known Dwight for many years
I had never seen his car on the track. In the
morning the current owner was putting down
some very fast times, but in the afternoon
I noticed that the number on the door had
changed to number 30 and Dwight was in
the car on grid. By this time 20 or 30 people
had gathered around to watch Dwight
take his old car out. And even though
Dwight hadn’t run an autocross for five
plus years – he was fast and I just couldn’t
help think how fun it would have been to
be around when he was winning National
championships with his car.
Cayenne Autocross
CRAB 30 and it showed with the number
and quality of door prizes. Everyone who
registered for CRAB received something
and it felt like Christmas all over again.
Besides the door prizes, many of our
sponsors also provided hard dollars which
helped purchase the awards, print the
program and keep the cost of the weekend
as reasonable as possible. And what about
that Grand Prize – a $1000.00 (and that’s not
a typo) gift certificate from Niello Porsche
and Porsche Cars North America. And no,
I wasn’t the lucky one who won it and I
heard the person who did win it made it home
without getting mugged. A special thanks to
Don Koepke, Niello’s Porsche Parts Director,
for bringing out the Niello Goodie Store
to the Friday night kick-off registration party
and for arranging to have the 2003 Cayenne
S on display for the weekend. Finally, all of us
owe a big Thank You to the CRAB 30 team
and Dwight and Linda Mitchell for putting
on this weekend for us all to enjoy. Next years
Chairpeople are Kern and Cindi Breaux and
I know from first hand experience that they
have already begun work on CRAB 31!
I can hardly wait.

Christmas in June?
530-742-4155
Well, not really, but if we don’t get someone 87 911
(or some couples) to volunteer to head up
this party soon Santa may not be visiting
the SVR Porsche Club this December – bah
humbug. From first hand experience I can
tell you that this is one of the most enjoyable
events to organize for the club. Christmas
is such a wonderful time of year anyway
and putting on this event makes that much
more special. I would like to encourage our
newer members to consider stepping up and
putting this event together for us. I would
hope that most people join the club to get
involved and not just to get The Drifter
every month. So what do you think – do we
have some “fresh blood” out there that would
like to step up and make a difference for
the club? You’ll get plenty of support from
those of us that have done it in the past.
Give our Social Director, Katherine Sheppard,
or myself a call if you want to have some fun
this Christmas or if you have any questions.
I know I’m going to get some “flack” about
my second highlight, but you just had to be
there and see the two Cayenne’s run the
autocross. They were fast and beat a lot of
the 911’s with their run times. They were
both Cayenne S’s (no turbo’s around this
weekend) and completely stock including
their street tires. Their engines sounded
great as they got up into the RPM range
with very little body roll and fast out of the
last turn on the short straight. I must admit
though that it did look strange to see an
SUV (even a Porsche SUV) on the autocross Shriner’s Concours
circuit. But with times like they ran, I could
I hope to see all of you at the SVR/Shriners
get use to it.

our Sponsors
I’ve said it before and I guess I’ll say it again;
without the support of our sponsors we
wouldn’t be able to have the types and
number of events that we have. Our sponsors
came

Meet at RPM
April 23 we moved our board meeting to
RPM(Race Place Motorsports), a great place
for a meeting because it's new, clean and it's
closer to home. There are two food locations
inside the building & three meeting rooms.
After the meeting we all went down stairs to
get signed up to drive the karts. Ten drivers
willing to show were Kathy Smalley, Tom Sisson, Doug DeVetter, Bob Peake, Rich Mcglumphy, Bill Keegan, Bob Jacobson, Russ
Hildebrand, Hale Hildebrand and Bill Thorp.
We started off with hot laps to see who is the
fastest by running the quickest lap. After 10
laps Kathy was leading (21.991) until Bob
Peake ran a lap at 21.706. The rest of us were
driving around the track in single file. Chalk

Auto Fun
By Greg Peart
CRAB 30 Autocircus
The Auto Circus was held for two days of
CRAB this year to entice more entries than
in previous years past. As a result, a total of 29
cars ran the event and entrants never had to
wait to participate more than a few minutes.
Everyone enjoyed the new type of event that
had a European flavor. It was a departure
from prior years that really tested the precise
knowledge of the outer limits of your Porsche
or Honda. Yes we had a Honda, Audi and
Trauma Hawk ambulance also participate. But
to top it all was the new Porsche Cayenne.
Greg and Cyndee Peart want to thank most
of all our assistant, Bob Peake. He brought
the information back from his travels in
Europe to put on this event in the new format. We also want to thank the following for
their help working the event: Beth and Bob
Jacobson, Sally and Ron Boeck, Daymon
Nightingale and Phil Lawrence. This truly was
the best Crab ever, until next year.

Dynamic Aerodynamics
After this top side look, we were ushered into
the shop area where two more Cayennes were
in the service bays. One was on the floor and
another on a lift for an excellent view of the
underside of this magnificent vehicle. Ron
described the suspension system and told how
the system on the Turbo can raise and lower
the vehicle for clearing objects on the ground.
The system also automatically slightly lowers
the vehicle at high speeds (higher than any of
us would probably drive it) for better handling
and less drag. The Porsche engineers, I’m certain had a wonderful time designing and testing this vehicle. There is speculation that the
Cayenne may be entered in the Dakar Rally.
I’m sure it would be an awesome competitor
Cayenne Training
Ron explained he had been trained by Porsche in all aspects of maintaining the vehicle
and had been sent to drive and test the vehicle at the George Barber track facility in Alabama. This is the new site of the “Porsche
Driving Experience” school. He said the off
road capabilities of the Cayenne are fantastic
and it would also a great autocrosser. They
were also provided with comparison vehicles
to drive such as Land Rovers and BMW’s.
They were no competition to the newest Porsche. The Cayenne has a 78,000- mile service interval, which speaks volumes about Porsche’s confidence in the vehicle.

CRAB 30 AUTOCROSS RESULTS
Friday afternoon the 26th was quite windy
and wet and setting up the course for CRAB
was not looking too good with rain in the
forecast for Saturday also. However, Bill
Thorp and I managed to get the basic
course laid out before the heavy rains came.
A couple of practice runs indicated that the
course needed “massaging” before it flowed
like I wanted it to. About that time Kim
Nelson showed up to assist us and after
getting the course to where I thought it was
ready for final testing, we were going to box
the cones. However, the rains came and
we decided to do that and lime the course
Saturday morning. Great choice as the
weather was beautiful. I guess the Good
Lord likes CRAB also. There was an
abundance of help with getting everything
set-up and we started almost on time.
Everyone got a minimum of three runs and
those die hard auto-crossers got up to six
runs before we ended at 4:30pm.

OVER ……………
Here it is June already. Time to buy some new
Goodie store stuff. As you may know, PCNA
and PCA are reevaluating the licensening
agreement concerning the use of Porsche trademarked items like the logo and the crest. It is
possible that the Goodie store may not be able
to sell certain items in the future. We are not
restocking, but we do have merchandise on
hand. This is your chance to get someT-shirts
and polo shirts at reduced prices. Give the
Goodie Store a try! We have PCA and SVR
car badges ($18 and $15) ready to go. We have

Make Plans
It is time to start making plans for the winter
trip up to the north coast. Last years tour had
40 cars from six of the Zone 7 regions. The
dates are October 31st – November 2nd. And
because October 31st is Halloween, we are
looking at the idea of a party or at least attending one in the local area.
Rooms
We have a block of rooms (check with Rik or
Lettie first) reserved at the Little River Inn
for those that wish to stay at the traditional
place. We are also working with several places in Fort Bragg that are less expensive (an
option that was very popular last year). We
are taking reservations and deposits now.

based upon your original start time (which was
an advantage to experience when it came to
running the CRAB 30 rally). Besides the team
of Armellini and Larson, the Hoffmann’s decided to give it a try (and won their class). Too
bad more PCA cars did not run the
event………it was very enjoyable.
Rally #2
The second event on the schedule was the traditional Spring Flowers Rally by our own
Phillip “Goose” Marks. With a crew of 10
workers, he put on a 3-hour event with 5
checkpoints. It rained only a little bit during
the event, which was a blessing after encountering very strong thunderstorms and downpours on the way to the start location in Vacaville. We knew that we were in for a rather
straightforward event when we were handed
a two-page set of route instructions. Goose
used the west and south edges of Lake Berryessa as the locale for his event. He pulled
off a rather unique situation where he placed
a checkpoint on a road that you have been on
only 20-25 minutes earlier. The first-place
awards were potted flowers (Spring Flowers).
There were 12 cars from three regions competing in the five classes.
