Winter
Back in March, Aleece and I went on the
New Member Tour. During lunch at the
Montevina Winery, I was wandering around
the parking lot photographing cars, or at
least bits of cars. Kim Nelson jokingly
suggested that I really needed to put a
picture of his yellow Boxster S on the cover.

The first Zone 7 concours event of 2004
Sunday, May 16th, 2004.
California State University, Fresno.
$30.00 fee includes entry for two to the dinner/dance extravaganza, hosted by the East
Fresno Rotary Club in the Old Van Ness District on Saturday, May 15th. There is no
fee for “Display Only” Porsches and the Porsche Art Exhibit. Lunch will be available
with your reservation $6.00 per person.
Awards given for concours entries at this event sponsored by
Michael’s Porsche of Fresno.

New SVR Secretary
In an effort to increase our focus on new
members and help them get involved in the
Club’s activities, at the March Board meeting Steve Goltz (last year’s Drifter Editor)
was approved as Club Secretary. Rick
Weidner will continue, with increased focus, in the newly created position of New
Member Chair. This was a good move for
the Club because Steve really has a desire to
help shape the Club (we need more people
like this), and Rick is extremely enthusiastic
about helping new members integrate into
the Club. Rick already has a number of new
member programs that he is beginning to
put in place. I hope you will all join me in
thanking these two individuals for their commitment to your Club.

a tribute to the Speedster’s 50th anniversary,
the Shriners Concours Committee has selected Porsche—with emphasis on the
Speedster, Convertible D and Roadster—as
the featured marque.
At last year’s Concours we had 87 Porsches on the field, and those of you that were
there remember what a beautiful sight it was!
This year we would like to see many more
Porsches on the field, and to achieve this we
need your involvement. Even if you prefer
to not have your car judged in the Concours,
we hope you will come out and display your
car on the field and share in the friendship
and camaraderie of other Porsche owners and
auto enthusiasts.
Bob Garretson - Grand Marshal
In keeping with the Porsche focus, the Shriners Concours Committee selected Zone 7
Wall of Famer Bob Garretson to be the
Grand Marshal of this year’s event. Bob will
be honored at the Saturday evening ( June
12) Grand Marshal Banquet.

start at 10:00, and we will have some tours
of the Museum when Bob is finished. There
will be a $10.00 charge for the morning’s
activities and the proceeds will go directly
to help the Towe Auto Museum.

by Golden Gate Region May 5 at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds. (Yosemite Region had

Even though SVR is a growing Club, our
growth is hindered by the loss of existing
members. Members choose not to renew for
many reasons, including the pressure of work
and families, financial concerns, and moving out of the area. However, a PCA National survey found that another significant
reason for lapsing membership is that new
members felt like they couldn’t break into
the established group.
Every one of us can help ensure that new
members feel welcomed into our ranks. At

We all know it’s tough to be a new member in any organization. Standing alone at
an event is not pleasant; you feel like
everyone knows everyone else but you.
I’m happy to introduce G24. Group 24
represents members that have been in our
Club for 24 months or less. During a member’s first two years, they will be asked to
voluntarily wear a G24 name badge to let
other new members and seasoned members know they are new to SVR.
Through out the year, Candace and I
plan to host several G24 activities. These
mixers should help build friendships and
promote involvement in the Club—along
with being fun!
If you’ve been in the club for 24 months

New SVR Competition Officers
The second event in the 2004 Zone 7 series
is history, and rallymaster Phillip “Goose”
Marks presented an outstanding event. A
total of 14 cars started and finished the event.
Entries from five Zone 7 regions (Sacramento Valley, Diablo, Loma Prieta, Golden Gate,
Yosemite) set one of the modern-day records
for a PCA rally in this area.
We met for registration at the Black Oak
Restaurant in Vacaville. Two drivers’ meetings were held: one for the expert entrants
(“There will be traps!”), and the other meeting for everyone else (“Here are the exact
locations of all the checkpoints”).
We started off at one-minute intervals
on the 115-mile rally that took just over 3
hours to complete. A total of four checkpoints were encountered. Workers who
helped make this event a success included:

Upcoming Events
The third event of the Zone 7 series, May
Madness, will be a PAN-AM format. It will
start in the Stockton area on Saturday, May
8, and is hosted by Yosemite Region. The
general instructions are available in advance
from Bud Behrens (see ad page 9 for more
information). This event only requires an
accurate timepiece and the ability to read
(provided) maps.

Driver Ed & Instructor Certification
SVR will be hosting a Driver Education and
Instructor Certification event at Thunderhill
Race Park on June 4. I have been to this track
about twenty times; it is a very friendly track,
with limited walls and lots of run-off space.
Novice/Beginner drivers will receive both
classroom and on-track instruction by experienced instructors, and will learn how to
control their cars at medium and high speeds
on Thunderhill’s 3-mile road course.
The Driving Instructor Certification is
a PCA program, and is subject to prequalification. Experienced drivers who can communicate well with students are candidates
for this program. In addition to the track
instruction, the Instructor candidates must
attend a 3-hour class that will be conducted
by Warren Walker a week or so prior to the
event (location to be determined).

For those coming up on Thursday
evening, there will be driver check-in at the
Casa Ramos restaurant in Willows at
7:00pm, and I will block out rooms at the
Best Western Golden Pheasant Inn, next
door to the restaurant. For those coming up
on Friday morning, the gates open at 7:00
am; you must check in prior to the mandatory 8:00 am drivers’ meeting. All attendees
must register and pay for the event by May
20, 2004.
Autocross
We are still looking for a Sacramento area
site for AX events. In the meantime, two
autocrosses are planned for this year at other
locations: The first event is at Stead Airport
in Reno, Nevada, May 15-16. Later this year,
there will be a combination AX and Driver
Education event at Infineon Raceway.
The Stead Airport Autocross is being
chaired by Bill & Kathy Thorp. Bill Thorp
says: “Once again, the Sierra Nevada Region
and Sacramento Valley Region are teaming
up to do Zone Autocross #3 & #4. The location is the large and beautiful Stead Airport. SVR is currently experiencing a cone
shortage, so you should have no problem
with hitting cones on this fast and fun
course.” Hotel accommodations are at the
Sands Regency. The Sierra Nevada Region
is hosting a BBQ Saturday night. For more

Description: Official maps or instructions will be used to communicate possible routes to
standoff and checkpoint controls so that entrants may arrive at each checkpoint at the time
and in the direction specified. All roads are paved and public unless otherwise specified.
Classes: Everyone is in the same class. Permissible equipment includes clipboard, paper,
pens/pencils, highlighters, a watch or timing device, and a single-memory calculator. No
rally charts or tables, calculators, or computers are permitted. Each rally car must have a
driver and a navigator.
Preregistration: It is strongly recommended that entrants study the general rules prior to
the event. To obtain them, send your entry fee check in the amount to of $15.00, payable

Concours d’ Elegance
This year’s Zone 7 Concours sponsored by SVR is going to be a weekend to remember.
For the 3rd year the Concours is being held in conjunction with the Shriners Hospital
Concours. This Concours has become the largest car show in Sacramento. It is a
significant fund-raiser for the Shriners Hospital for Children.
This year’s Marque is the PORSCHE SPEEDSTER
Sacramento Valley Region will hold the PCA Zone 7 Competition Series 2004
Concours #3 on Sunday, June 13th at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Sacramento.
There will be a PCA sponsored Hospitality Tent. We are expecting a huge turnout of
fantastic early to late model Porsches.

Tours To Suit Just About Anyone
1. Not sure this was what people were expecting to see on the
Garage Tour, but even RC cars look nice on that epoxy painted
floor!

SVR Members
Start with surround sound, home theatres,
tile floors, microwave ovens, and memorabilia. Now add in-ground auto lifts, meticulous working garages, a restoration facility
and—oh yes—a gas-powered mixer for making margaritas. What do you have? Well, a
beautiful Saturday to tour four SVR members’ garages.
The day started with some great Porsche
driving roads and beautiful scenery. The first
garage was Tom Sisson’s in the Jackson area.
Upon arriving you didn’t know if you should
first look at the garage or the incredible valley view. His garage floor has black and white
checker flag tiles so every car is a winner!
Upstairs he has years of car memorabilia,
which was fun to peruse.
After lots of questions answered by Tom
we headed out the back roads to El Dorado
Hills to the home of the McKees. As we
walked toward their home we could see that
a Mercedes was up in the air. Yes, an inground auto lift. Everyone was in awe with
this setup. Once we picked up our jaws and

viewed the garage, which included a home
theatre and workout room upstairs, we had
our picnic in their beautiful pool and garden
area.
Next, it was time to move on down the
road to the Rauches’ place. When we arrived, we weren’t sure where to enter. They
have a cool 2-car drive through plus a connected two-car garage. Wow, this garage is
so super clean you almost wouldn’t know it
is a working racer’s garage. Frederick has
maximized his space with lots of great cabinets and use of hanging space for storage.
And you can listen to and watch your incar-camera videos in surround sound in the
garage! The other surprise here was that Rick
Weidner had a birthday and we all enjoyed
his birthday cake. Yum, yum!
On to the last garage, at the Cannons’
home. As you walked to the backyard you
could hear some grinding and sanding
sounds. Taking a second look, you see a 356
on its side in a rotisserie rack, and two or
three other 356s in various stages of disassembly. Bob and Kim Nelson were sporting
a thin layer of car dust because this is a restoration garage for 356s—a full-on working
garage with its own gas-powered margarita
mixer for times when a spirit lift is needed.
It was a day of fun had by all. Thanks to
Bob Peake and all of our hosts!

Supercup Dinner & Indy F1 Tickets
Porsche Cars North America and the Central Indiana Region of the Porsche Club of
America are pleased to announce the Third
Annual Porsche Supercup Dinner to be held
on Saturday, June 19, 2004 in conjunction
with festivities surrounding the United States
Grand Prix Formula One race June 19&20,
2004.
This year’s Supercup Dinner will be hosted at the Walker Racing facility in Indianapolis, and will feature a variety of current
and vintage Porsches—including the 1989
Porsche Indy Car that was piloted by Teo
Fabi under the direction of Derrick Walker.
The dinner will feature a special keynote
speaker, and select Porsche Supercup drivers will talk about their experiences with
Porsche and the Supercup program.
Again this year, the United States Grand
Prix festival committee in conjunction with
Central Indiana Region PCA will hold the
Porsche Grand Car Cruise through downtown Indianapolis. The Supercup Dinner
will follow the Car Cruise, enabling dinner
attendees to participate in both the cruise
and dinner.
Seating is limited, so early registration is
encouraged. The $55.00 registration fee per
attendee includes access to the Walker Racing facilities, a selection of beer and wine,
dinner and dessert. Registration will be made
available online at http: //www.cirpca.org/
along with further details in the coming
weeks.
Porsche Cars North America has made
special arrangements with the track for PCA
members. The seats are “best in the house,”
located in section H (first turn coming off
the oval). Race tickets are $105. To order,

March 13 turned out to be a wonderful
spring day for the semi-annual New Member Welcome Tour. A total of 24 Porsches
met early on Saturday morning at Starbucks
in the El Dorado Hills Town Center for introductions and a briefing on the day’s events.

significant others, joined members of the
Board for a morning of touring the back
roads of El Dorado and Amador counties.
Thanks to Tom Sisson we had a reserved
setting at the wonderful Montevina Winery
and a delightful picnic lunch. President Kim
Nelson led an enthusiastic and well-received
introduction to the workings of the Club and
all it has to offer.
Having had a chance to meet all that attended, I can assure you that we have a great

Call To Order
President Kim Nelson called the March 17,
2004 Board meeting to order at 6:10 pm at
RPM Motorsports. Present were: Board
members Tom Sisson, Bill Keegan, Rick
Weidner, Steve Goltz, Aleece & Elliot
Hoffmann, Russ Hildebrand, Kevin
Dougherty and Frederick Rauch constituting a quorum. Absent were: Dennis Stettner and Mark Sides. Also in attendance were
Mike & Emily Willis, Kern Breaux and
Doug Gale.
Old Business
Minutes of the February 18, 2004 Board
meeting were approved as submitted.
New Business
Position Changes: Rick Weidner resigned
as Secretary, but will continue as New Member Chairperson. The Board appointed Steve
Goltz as Secretary.
CRAB Review (Kern Breaux): Fifty entries
have been received at this time; more are
expected as the April 10 deadline approaches. The Friday evening Registration Party
will include a new member gathering hosted by Rick Weidner, as well as a Goodie
store. Saturday will have AX, a tour to the
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, and the
Crab Feed. Sunday will have a Rally, Concours and Funkhana, as well as the Beer and
Brat picnic and awards.
San Simeon Tour (Mike & Emily Willis):
Thirty-three cars (sixty-five people) are
signed up and there is a waiting list. Rooms
have been reserved.
June 4 Thunderhill Driver Ed Event (Frederick Rauch & Doug Gale): The event
budget was reviewed and approved. There
will be instructor mentoring sessions leading to instructor certification, as well as novice (with instructor) and intermediate run
groups. Russ Hildebrand is SVR Chief Driving Instructor. Clarification is needed on
some insurance-related issues.
Breakfast Meetings (Bill Keegan): Locations have been researched, but no one has
stepped forward to coordinate breakfasts.
Rick Weidner plans to host monthly breakfasts for new members. General membership breakfasts will be tabled until success
of new member breakfasts is observed and/
or a coordinator is found.
Drifter Computer Update (Aleece & Elliot
Hoffmann): Software purchases and options
were reviewed.
Concours Prep Tech Session: Event will be

Sutter Creek Welcomes PCA: City Manager Rob Duke has expressed interest in

needed. Motion to suspend Share-theWealth until 2005 failed; the program will
resume in May.

OYSTER FEED 2004
Mark your calendar and reserve your spot on the 2004 Oyster Feed Tour. This year’s tour will take you to the coast through
some beautiful countryside, stopping at a local winery. We will
conclude the tour at Samuel P. Taylor Park with an outstanding Oyster Feed. For those of you who want to join the fun, but
do not enjoy oysters, there will be barbequed chicken. The
chicken was as big a hit as the oysters at the last Oyster Feed.

Thirteen cars participated in the sixth presentation of the SVR “Great Search” Kids’
Rally on March 21. Tourmaster Helen
Ashuckian has presented all previous
Searches and this one was outstanding. The
attendance this year was the largest we have
ever had.
A tour of the farmlands and small towns
just northwest of Sacramento (Davis, Woodland, Esparto, and Yolo) was the setting. And
it was a beautiful March day for the Search.
At the registration (handled by myself
and Helen) at McDonald’s in Davis, everyone was provided with a carrying bag filled
with goodies. The bags sported a “grand prix”
theme, featuring race cars and checked flags,
and contained: a clipboard, instructions, various treats, and other items that Helen had
obtained at various 99-cent stores. (It is
amazing as to what you can get at these
stores!) Shortly after 10 am, everyone started on the two-hour Search.

Lets run some of these values up the May Pole and see if anyone salutes.
Spring has sprung!! You really need some new duds, and they might as
well be from the Goodie Store. After all, Macy’s is already selling Fall
clothes. You can choose from SVR Logo Shirts (just $30), “PORSCHE”

SVR Denim Shirts (a mere $35).

May Day is the first day of May. Its celebration probably originated in the spring fertility festivals of
India and Egypt. In medieval England, the chief feature of the celebration of May Day was the Maypole,
which are actually phallic symbols used in British fertility rites to usher in Spring and ensure fecundity
in crops and livestock. The pole was decorated with flowers and streamers, the loose ends of which
were held by dancers, who encircled the pole, weaving intricate patterns as they passed each other in
the dance.

There were three tasks for the kids: first
– keep track of all the different types of animals that once lived on “Old McDonald’s
Farm”; second – watch for the different types
of XING sings that warn you to be careful
as you are traveling along the roads; and third
– find answers to the “Travel Questions” (as
picked from the provided list).
Along the route, the cars were checked
in at various control points to determine their
progress and to receive more treats. And of
course to take advantage of a potty stop.
All 13 cars finished the event at Ludy’s
BBQ in Woodland where results were tabulated and awards presented to all.

get the Porsche out of its winter hiding place,
polish it up, and put down some miles! You
can’t beat Northern California for excellence

manufacture of our Porsche vehicles!
April brought us Sushi 101, courtesy of
Bob Peake, also the sponsor of the Tour
d’Garage in March. Participants learned
about different styles of Sushi, etiquette, and,
of course, the mandatory tasting—a unique
evening. Thanks, Bob, for hosting these two
events!
By the time you read this, CRAB 31 will
be behind us. At this writing, it appears that
we will once again have close to 100 participants for the “Premier Porsche Weekender.” A special thanks to Kern & Cindi Breaux
for chairing this year’s event. CRAB has become the major kick-off event for the SVR
year. It brings together old friends, many
from other regions, and introduces many new

Our Touring events start with the most
all-inclusive idea presented at the Planning
Meeting. Stephanie Morgan is hosting the
High Sierra, Iris Gardens, Winery, Apple
(pie), and Brewery Tour on Sunday, May 2.
Who says you can’t have it all?
The following Saturday (May 8), Frederick & Susan Rauch have a full day planned
in the Napa Valley with a couple of
prearranged winery tours, a deli lunch at the
Silver Rose Cellars, and winding up the
afternoon in Calistoga with ice cream and
maybe a Spa, for those who might be interested as an added treat.
On May 13, Greg & Cyndee Peart and
Mike West & Catherine Straight are hosting the Dinner Meeting at the Elk Grove
Brewery. NOTE: We will have a “Sharethe-Wealth” program at this event. Sharethe-Wealth is a drawing for donated gifts
such as wine, Porsche goodies, or handicrafts.
Members participate by bringing prize donations, purchasing tickets, or both. Sharethe-Wealth proceeds support The Drifter

Share a more detailed tech tip or even give a
little tutorial. Just keep it relevant to Porsches and/or PCA. Articles should be
emailed in plain text format, or in Microsoft
Word files with minimal formatting.
