“For the Church, charity is not a kind of welfare activity
which could equally be left to others, but is a part of her
nature, an indispensable expression of her very being.”
~ excerpt from Deus Caritas Est, first encyclical letter
from Pope Benedict XVI, 2005
Dedication
Those of us who loved him and who take him to his rest today, pray that
what he was to us and what he wished for others will some day come to pass
for all the world.
…. Excerpt from eulogy for Robert F. Kennedy
These words capture the essence of our feelings for the two board
members we lost this fiscal year. Monsignor Edward J. Ryle passed away
on December 28, 2005, and then, on June 15, 2006, just days before
his two-year tenure as President of our board was to end, Leslie G. “Les”
Ebeling, lost his 15-year battle with cancer.
Les Ebeling
These two men served a combined 60 years on the Catholic
Charities Board of Directors. Each was a tireless advocate for the poor
and disadvantaged. Each was a change agent, never satisfied with what
we were doing now; instead, focusing on what we could—and should be
doing next.
When Msgr. Ryle retired from the Arizona Catholic Conference,
where he served as the voice of the Church before the Arizona
legislature for many years, the headline in The Arizona Republic
correctly recognized him as “God’s Lobbyist.” At Catholic Charities
board meetings, he challenged all of us to do what we could, and many
times what we needed to do, to achieve the Gospel mandate of justice
for the poorest and most vulnerable among us.
Monsignor Edward J. Ryle
Les Ebeling was the sort of man who needed no glory. He saw a
problem and sought the solution. Among his many contributions is
My Sisters’ Place, a safe haven for victims of domestic violence that he
helped found over twenty years ago in his living room.
We dedicate this 2005-2006 Annual Report to Msgr. Ryle and Les
Ebeling, who serve as shining examples of what we can do to make the
world a better place.
Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes Him who sent
me, has eternal life; he will not come into judgment, but has passed from
death to life (John 5:24).

“Love of neighbor, grounded in the love of
God, is first and foremost a responsibility for
each individual member of the faithful, but it is
also a responsibility for the entire ecclesiastical
community at every level: from the local
community to the particular Church and to the
Church universal in its entirety.”
~-excerpt from Deus Caritas Est
Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, in his
encyclical letter to the faithful, Deus Caritas
Est, inspires us to demonstrate God’s love in
everything we do. Catholic Charities was founded
upon this principle of love for neighbor. For over
70 years, the staff, volunteers and donors have
shown their love to those in need. There is still
much to do. Let us not forget the important role
each of us has in the work of charity. The theme
of this year’s annual report, “It Takes All of Us”
says it clearly. May God bless all who make the
work of Catholic Charities possible.

Dear
Friends
“If you see charity, you see the Trinity,” wrote Saint Augustine. So
begins Part II of the first encyclical letter from Our Holy Father, Pope
Benedict XVI.
What inspiring wisdom for all who support the daily work of Catholic
Charities—developing just and caring communities by protecting and
nurturing children, strengthening families, and supporting people in
crisis. Love is at the core of what we do. To know that this is the holiest
work we can do makes it even more satisfying.
That is not to say that our work is easy. Far from it. It can be
back-breaking and heart-wrenching. It is often discouraging. It is
never-ending. But, for most of us, despite the struggles, it is the most
rewarding work we will ever do.
We are fortunate to have more than 600 dedicated employees and
thousands of volunteers who are wholly committed to our work of
charity. Their enthusiasm and perseverance, combined with the gifts of
money and other resources provided by our more than 2,000 donors,
are what made it possible for us to serve the over 212,000 Arizonans
who came to Catholic Charities for support and assistance this year.
Truly, it takes all of us if we are to be triumphant in our mission.
Despite the generosity of our supporters, there are still thousands of
people we can’t help each year. They are no less deserving than the
people you will meet in these pages—like Wilfred and his son, Oliver,
who were helped by Catholic Charities while Wilfred recovered from
brain surgery (see page 23), or JoAnn who found refuge from domestic
violence at Catholic Charities’ My Sisters’ Place (see page 19)—they
have just not yet been so fortunate as to find God’s love through the
charitable works of our employees, volunteers and donors.
It takes so many people combining our time, talents and treasures to
make Catholic Charities a powerful force for love in our communities.
4
It is my honor to introduce you to some of these amazing people in this report. People like Maureen
Webster, who will retire this year from Catholic Charities after 28 years of service as Regional Director
of our Phoenix Regional Service Center. Maureen has not only made huge contributions locally, she is
a leader on a national level in efforts to assist refugees who seek asylum from persecution for reasons of
race, religion, nationality, or membership in a particular social group or political opinion. Learn more
about Maureen on page 24.
You will meet Prescott community volunteers, Kathy Sischka and Ann Hampton, who lead the
committee that sponsors the Catholic Charities’ annual Gala in Prescott to support operations in Yavapai
County, raising over $44,000 this year (see page 30). Flagstaff volunteers, Bill and Barbara Packard,
show what it means to return a portion of what was given to them by donating countless hours to set up
the new emergency family shelter in Coconino County (see page 32).
Giving of one’s financial gifts is another tremendous way to support Catholic Charities. Dr. Theresa
Mao, a 12-year member of the Catholic Charities’ Board of Directors, recently pledged a gift to Catholic
Charities, to be paid over ten years (see page 16). Carl and Aune Lind celebrated the blessings of their
lives, including 65 years of marriage, by supporting Catholic Charities through their family foundation
(see page 28).
At the front of this year’s annual report, we remember two of the people who made incredible
contributions to Catholic Charities over the past quarter of a century. I am reminded that the rest of us
will have to work that much harder to fill the void left by their passing. More than ever, it takes all of us
to fulfill God’s commandment, as set forth in Matthew 7:12, “(s)o in everything, do to others what you
would have them do to you...”
Throughout this annual report, you will find excerpts from Pope Benedict’s encyclical letter, Deus
Caritas Est. Literally translated, this phrase means “God is love.” The word “caritas” is the basis for the
English “to care” and is really the essence of Catholic Charities, and our
request of you. We hope you will get to know our work and join us in the
caring for, and loving of all God’s children.
Peace and blessings,
Paul J. Martodam, CEO

articipating in Catholic Charities’ Head Start has
been an educational experience for the entire
Jackson family.
Zonda and James Jackson’s 3-year-old daughter,
Za’nea, participated in home-based Head Start this
last year. Each week, a Head Start teacher came to
their home with a learning activity for the daughter
as well as instruction for Zonda and James about
taking an active role in their children’s education.

“Head Start made me realize how important
it is for me to read a book or do an activity with
them, not just watch TV,” said Zonda. She especially
appreciated the teaching ideas the teacher left each
week—like the bean and bag of soil she could use to
start a planting project with her daughter.
Looking for more ways to get involved, Zonda
joined the parent committee for her area and also
became a delegate to the Westside Policy Committee,
which oversees Catholic Charities’ Head Start
operations in the West Valley.
“I like my kids seeing that I am involved, that
I stay active, that I do things for them and myself,”
said Zonda. “And I’ll do anything I can to help my
kids grow up differently than I did.”

Michaela McShane
Protecting
& Nurturing
Children
Michaela McShane has learned that young people really can make a
difference in the community.
As a participant in Teenage Pregnancy Prevention’s (TAPP) Teens
Taking Action program run by Catholic Charities in Yavapai County,
Michaela had to complete an independent service project. She was stumped
until she attended a presentation made by a woman in her community
with AIDS.
“It was really a wake-up call,” said Michaela. “I had never met anyone
with AIDS. It had seemed so distant, but I realized that it was right here
in my community.”
With the encouragement of the program’s advisors, Michaela decided
to harness her passion for art to increase HIV/AIDS awareness in her
community. She developed four messages and illustrated them in four
paintings.
Catholic Charities paid to have Michaela’s artwork printed onto
notepads, postcards, and posters. Michaela then distributed them,
with donations benefiting the local AIDS clinic. Soon after, three of
her paintings were entered into an art auction held to benefit the same
clinic.
Today, Michaela feels empowered. “There is so much we can do. I
really feel like I accomplished something.”
“It was really great to see what the program did for Michaela,” said a
TAPP advisor. “Kids just need the opportunity and someone to believe in
them, and they will shine.

Protecting & Nuturing Children
In today’s complex world, it takes all of us to ensure that the most
vulnerable in our society—the children—get the best chance at life.
Every child needs protection and loving support. Every child needs a
home to call his or her own. Every child deserves a solid education
and an opportunity to enjoy childhood without the worries of abuse,
violence, neglect or premature pregnancy.
At Catholic Charities, we support children through a wide array
of services. Our staff, volunteers and donors provide the resources for
thousands of low-income families who want to give their children a
better chance at life through Head Start and Early Head Start, a federal
program of comprehensive preschool education for children, ages 3 to
5. Not only do children gain valuable skills that give them a “head start”
in learning, but parents also participate, learning how to support their
children and achieve more for themselves and their families.
Education doesn’t stop with preschoolers at Catholic Charities.
Our services include programs directed at helping young people of all
ages gain respect for themselves and others. During 2005-2006, nearly
40,000 school children throughout Arizona benefited from Catholic
Charities’ pregnancy and abstinence education and abuse and violence
prevention courses.
Children who grow up without a home to call their own, or who have
been subjected to abuse and neglect in their homes, are extremely fragile.
Without the love and support of a family, these children are much more
likely to enter a life of crime and abuse. Catholic Charities’ roots are
embedded firmly in caring for these children and connecting them with
loving families. We have long been known for our adoption services and
continue to be one of the largest providers of these services in Arizona,
placing infants, as well as older children, with loving “forever families.”
Our foster care staff recruits and licenses foster parents, matches them
with children who need temporary homes, and monitors and supports
these relationships. In some cases, children are not immediate candidates
for adoption or foster care or have special needs. Our three residential
programs provide broad support to pregnant or parenting teens, as well
as children who have suffered abuse or neglect.
“Love is ‘divine’ because it comes from God and unites
us to God; through this unifying process it makes us a
‘we’ which transcends our divisions and makes us one,
until in the end God is ‘all in all.’”

hen Catholic Charities’ Head Start program
approached Judy Poggi, a faculty member
in child and family studies at Glendale Community
College, about developing a program of study for our
employees, Judy was eager to get involved.
“I love this field of early childhood education,
and when I can help early childhood educators
get the training they need and view themselves as
professionals, I get involved,” said Judy.
To comply with federal Head Start guidelines,
Westside Head Start employees needed education and
training in infant and toddler development, not just
in pre-school development. So Judy helped Head Start
create a learning cohort—employees who wanted to
learn together—and taught classes at Westside Head
Start at times that were convenient for the group.
In the classes, Judy used the students’ own
teaching experiences to illustrate concepts and
discussed how principles could be applied in a Head
Start setting. But more than that, Judy created a
supportive learning environment that helped students
stay motivated and gain confidence.
“When we create communities of learners and
support them in their learning, we find that they stay
committed,” said Judy.
Judy’s work with Head Start has really paid off.
“Not only has the instruction given our employees
valuable training, but it has given them a stickto-it-tive-ness that enhances their work and their
lives,” said Cathy Tompkins, Regional Director of
Catholic Charities in the West Valley. “Judy has been
so supportive and a true partner in Catholic Charities’
mission to protect and nurture children.”
Judy has come away with a great appreciation
for Catholic Charities’ Head Start program and their
staff. “I’m so impressed with their commitment. They
have so much compassion and genuine sincerity in
empowering families and helping parents understand
their role in their children’s education.”

Strengthening
Families
For Melissa Noriega-Poure, working at Catholic Charities as an adoption
specialist is the most fulfilling job she could ever have. “It is wonderful to
watch families come together—to see people who will be such good parents
receive a child that really needs them.”
When Mark and Corliss Rusting first entered the infant adoption
program, Melissa educated them about the process and cautioned them that
their adoption journey might be bumpy.
That turned out to be the case. The Rustings were matched with a birth
mother who later decided to parent her twin babies. They also met with a
second birth mother before finally meeting the woman who would be their
child’s birth mom.
“Melissa gave us so much support,” said Corliss. “She told us it wasn’t
going to be easy, and that helped.”
About the same time, Rebecca Bermudez, a pregnancy counselor for
Catholic Charities, was working with a woman who had decided to place her
child for adoption.
“My job was to help her find the best home for her child, and the Rustings
were just the family she was looking for,” said Rebecca.
Melissa and Rebecca were there when Mark and Corliss first met their
child’s birth mother. The relationship grew from there, and at the birth
mother’s request, Mark and Corliss were present at the delivery. They could
hardly believe it when they brought their son, Hunter, home. It was real—
they were finally “Mom” and “Dad.”
The Rustings have only good things to say about their friends at Catholic
Charities. “The whole team was so supportive,” said Mark. “They were with
us every step of the way.”
Now a year old, Hunter has brought great joy to the Rusting home, and
the Rustings know that things worked out for the best. Rebecca and Melissa
agree. “We just facilitated something that was already meant to be.”

Strengthening Families
In 2005, a report was issued that analyzed the results of 23 different
studies on how family structure and family interaction impact crime
and delinquency in children. The report concluded that family, and
community support for the family, are key factors in preventing crime
and reversing the deterioration of neighborhoods.
With these research results in mind, it is obvious that we all have a
vested interest in strengthening families. Beyond crime prevention and
community safety, however, there is an even better reason to care about
families: according to another 2005 study, 75 percent of Americans
believe that family is the most important factor in achieving personal
happiness.
At Catholic Charities, we care about families for these and many
other reasons. We know that by strengthening families, we save lives and
build better communities. When we receive a call from Child Protective
Services about a family in crisis, our experienced staff works diligently
to create a plan of action unique to the circumstances of that family.
The plan may include counseling, in-home guidance and support,
parenting skills classes, substance abuse intervention and, in some
cases, placement of children in foster homes until reunification is safe
and appropriate.
Our donors, volunteers and staff are committed to the refreshment
and care of the souls of every family member. It truly takes all of us to
ensure that every family receives the best possible chance at happiness
and a strong future.
“This love does not simply offer people material
help, but refreshment and care for their souls,
something which often is even more necessary
than material support.”

eisha was referred to Catholic Charities’ Families
F.I.R.S.T. program when her son was born exposed to
methamphetamine. Already the single parent of a 3-yearold daughter, Meisha was devastated that she couldn’t
bring her son home from the hospital immediately upon
her discharge. She wanted to parent both her children,
s0 consented to weekly counseling for substance abuse,
random drug tests, and case management.
Maura Cluff, Meisha’s case manager, educated Meisha
about the particular harms of methamphetamine use and
prepared her for the long, hard struggle she would face in
kicking her habit. She also helped Meisha identify a source
of strength in her life—Meisha said it was her willpower.
“If I make up my mind to do something, I will do it,”
said Meisha.
And that proved to be true. Meisha stayed clean of any
drugs, regularly visited her son in foster care, got a job,
applied for subsidized housing and temporary assistance
for needy families, and enrolled in a GED program. At
times, Meisha felt depressed, discouraged, and trapped
by her situation, but with Maura’s encouragement, she
persisted.
Today, Meisha and her children are together. Seeing
the joy in Meisha’s eyes and the change from despair to
optimism is worth all the hard work for Maura.
“Meisha had the personal strength and determination
to do it,” said Maura. “And she did it.”

Supporting
People in
Crisis
Dr. Theresa Mao’s philosophy about giving is simple. “We don’t succeed
in life solely through our own efforts. We have all been helped by others,
and so we need to give something back.”
Theresa has been giving back for a long time—donating her time
and money to worthy causes. Since moving to Phoenix in 1968, she has
been involved in numerous community organizations and efforts. Just
last year, she completed a 12-year tenure on Catholic Charities’ Board of
Directors.
“I am very proud of what Catholic Charities does,” said Theresa.
“It is a truly universal compassionate organization. It helps everyone,
regardless of religion or race.”
When Theresa joined the board, she saw that Catholic Charities
needed more financial resources to support Arizona’s most vulnerable
residents. She decided to donate.
“I wanted to help the people who don’t have food to eat, who have no
place to live,” Theresa said.
She made a donation in the form of a 10-year pledge, which means
donating a set amount each year for 10 years until the pledge is fulfilled.
This allowed her to make a much larger gift than she would have been able
to otherwise, because the yearly donations were more manageable than a
single lump sum payment.
Theresa hopes to inspire others to support Catholic Charities. “I really
believe we can all do something for Catholic Charities,” said Theresa. “I
love to see people donate because Catholic Charities does so much good
for all people in our community.”

Supporting People in Crisis
Faith-based social service is not a new concept; in fact, people of
faith have always been at the forefront of efforts to help the poor
and disadvantaged in America and throughout the world. Never has
the need been greater than it is today. Natural disasters, economic
downturns, medical emergencies, death or illness of family members,
domestic abuse, persecution, human trafficking, and homelessness
have impacted thousands of people here in Arizona, often leaving them
feeling desperate and alone.
Fortunately, there is hope for those in need, due to the generosity
of the donors, volunteers and employees who altruistically support
Catholic Charities. Thanks to their love—their caritas—141,415
people received services ranging from a box of food or payment of
a utility bill for a family in a tough spot to comprehensive services,
including housing, counseling, job training and even child care for a
refugee family, domestic violence survivor or woman making a new life
after escaping prostitution. In 2005-2006, Catholic Charities joined
our sister organizations around the country in welcoming families
displaced by Hurricane Katrina, providing broad support to nearly 50
families relocated to Arizona.
It does take all of us to give hope to the hopeless, homes to the
homeless, refuge to the refugee. By giving of our gifts and ourselves
selflessly like the Good Samaritan, our rewards will be found in the
faces and renewed hope of those we serve.
“Following the example given in the parable of the Good
Samaritan, Christian charity is first of all the simple
response to immediate needs and specific situations:
feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, caring for and
healing the sick, visiting those in prison, etc.”

Developing
Just & Caring
Communities
After Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast last summer, Catholic
Charities in Phoenix was asked to help hurricane survivors who needed
food, shelter, and assistance in relocating to the Phoenix area.
But the agency couldn’t do it alone. Catholic Charities was
overwhelmed with calls from people all over the Valley wanting to donate
furniture for apartments for the evacuees. The agency needed assistance
in collecting all the donations. And they knew just who to ask.
St. Patrick’s parish in Scottsdale had long been a partner with
Catholic Charities’ Office of Peace & Justice in building just and caring
communities through advocacy, public education, and service. So Catholic
Charities asked the parish to serve as a regional collection center for the
northeast valley.
St. Patrick’s responded quickly. Dick White, the parish social
action director, organized work crews of parish volunteers to make
trips throughout the community to pick up the furniture—beds, sofas,
mattresses, dinettes, and more.
St. Patrick’s also organized a parish-wide drive for household goods—
dishes, coffee pots, sheets, and other items—even crayons and toys for
the children.
“We ended up filling a moving van 15 to 20 times with furniture,”
said Dick. “We also collected a lot of smaller items for the apartments.”
With St. Patrick’s help, Catholic Charities was able to house numerous
individuals and families.
Service is just one of the ways that St. Patrick’s cares for the
community. In partnership with the Office of Peace & Justice, the Valley
Interfaith Project, and the Arizona Interfaith Network, St. Patrick’s
addresses a variety of issues—education, the environment, wages,
immigration, health care, and elder care.
“As a church, we are very good at charity or direct assistance, but we
also need to seek justice, often through systemic change,” said Dick. “We
help parishioners and others learn the issues and then train them to be
leaders and to enact change.”

Developing Just &
Caring Communities
The theme of this year’s annual report, “It Takes All of Us,” is
particularly applicable to our ongoing mission of developing just and
caring communities—communities where every person is valued,
respected and treated justly. Community engagement is a goal in all
but our most specialized programs. Catholic Charities’ Office of Peace
& Justice (“OPJ”) is charged with the responsibility for spreading the
word of Catholic social teaching, specifically stating in its purpose
statement:
The Office of Peace & Justice affirms human dignity
by providing leadership and tools to integrate the social
mission of the Gospel into parish and community life.
Key to the success of OPJ’s mission is the organization of Parish
Social Ministry (“PSM”) programs in the 90 parishes in the Diocese of
Phoenix. Our four PSM coordinators serve different geographic areas
of the diocese. They work to establish contacts within each parish and
organize parish-based educational programs and community outreach
in order that parishioners can participate directly in social ministry. In
2005-2006, parish ministry grew to include 22 parishes and the stage
was set for exponential growth in 2006-2007, with 57 parishes targeted
for active participation in social ministry, ranging from comprehensive
justice education to ministries in foster care, refugee resettlement, global
solidarity and human development.
“The Church cannot and must not take upon
herself the political battle to bring about the
most just society possible. She cannot and
must not replace the State. Yet at the same
time, she cannot and must not remain on the
sideline in the fight for justice. She has to play
her part through rational argument and she has
to reawaken the spiritual energy without which
justice, which always demands sacrifice, cannot
prevail and prosper.”

Parish Social Ministry – 22 parishes currently; 57 parishes
targeted for 2006-2007
Parish Social Ministry encompasses the many parish projects and
programs supported and facilitated by OPJ.
JustFaith and J-Walking – 8 parishes currently; 18 parishes
targeted for 2006-2007
JustFaith is the fastest growing, most successful justice formation
program in the US. Along with J-Walking, a similar youth spiritual
growth program, JustFaith empowers participants to develop a passion
for justice and to express this passion in concrete acts of social ministry.
Foster Care and Refugee Resettlement Ministry – 3 parishes
currently; 9 parishes targeted for 2006-2007
In response to the urgent need for foster families, parishes support
Catholic Charities’ foster care program through broad support for families
who provide homes for vulnerable children. Parishes also assist refugee
efforts through financial, emotional and ongoing support of refugee
families as they settle into their new homes in Arizona.
Catholic Relief Services/Global Solidarity Partners – 8 parishes
Catholic Relief Services (“CRS”) is the U.S. Bishops’ international
humanitarian agency that provides disaster response and promotes
global solidarity.
A
year ago, Wilfred Smallwood was deteriorating
rapidly because of a massive brain tumor. Having
fled his native Liberia because of political persecution,
he was a refugee, and there was little hope of getting
adequate medical care. All he could do was pray.
Then a visiting brain surgeon from the United
States came across Wilfred’s case. Wilfred’s
resettlement process was expedited, and within
weeks, he and his 13-year-old son Oliver were on
their way to Phoenix, where Wilfred would undergo
immediate surgery at St. Joseph’s Barrow Neurological
Institute.
When Wilfred arrived at the airport, staff
members of Catholic Charities’ Refugee Resettlement
program whisked him away to the hospital. They also
arranged to care for Oliver through the Refugee Foster
Care program while Wilfred recuperated.
Later, when Wilfred was discharged, Catholic
Charities provided a furnished apartment, helped
him find a job, and taught him about living in his
new country. Oliver’s foster parents also brought him
to visit his father regularly until Wilfred was ready to
parent again.
Today, Wilfred is feeling great, working, and
enjoying life with his son again. It’s nothing short of
a miracle to him that he is alive, and he thanks God
for putting him in the hands of Catholic Charities.
“The people at Catholic Charities are God’s
appointed servants,” said Wilfred. “It’s by God’s
mercy that we were sent to them.”
Catholic Campaign for Human Development Ministry – 26 parishes
The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (“CCHD”) is the nation’s
largest funding source for community controlled, self-help groups
working to break the cycle of poverty.

Maureen Webster has spent the last 28 years dedicating her
work to the people in need who come to Catholic Charities
in Phoenix every day.
Maureen began working at Catholic Charities in 1978 as
a casework supervisor, overseeing a number of programs,
including immigration and refugee services, senior adult
services, and community social work. As the agency changed
over time, responding to community needs, Maureen’s role
changed, giving her opportunities to work in just about
every program. In 1993, she became regional director.
Working at Catholic Charities has brought some
wonderful people into Maureen’s life. “Our staff members
here are my heroes. They give it their all everyday—in
people’s homes and on the streets—to help people have
better lives.”
The clients themselves have also been an inspiration.
“I’ve met so many people with incredible stories of tragedy,
and yet they have the strength of spirit to go on and work
for a better life.” said Maureen.
After 28 years, Maureen is passing the torch to her
protegé Tom Egan, currently the East Valley Regional
Director. But she may still turn up at Catholic Charities from
time to time as a volunteer. “People are struggling more
than ever,” said Maureen. “And it’s such a privilege when
they let you into their lives to help.”

“Working in the Phoenix Regional Service Center is like working at the United Nations. I don’t think there is another social
service agency in our area that serves the diverse needs of such a vast array of people. Our refugee program served people
from 12 countries this year. Our DIGNITY program is identifying victims of sex trafficking and helping women caught in the
insidious web of prostitution begin new lives. Our crisis team is helping Katrina victims start new lives here in Arizona. I may
be retiring, but I am far from done with my work at Catholic Charities. As I find other ways to be involved in this amazing
organization, I am more certain than ever that it takes all of us to do God’s important work of charity.”

When Jerry Biondi, a business owner in downtown Chandler,
heard about My Sisters’ Place, Catholic Charities’ domestic
violence shelter, he found a cause he wanted to support.
“I thought it would be a great way to give back to my
community,” said Jerry. “Besides, I can’t stand the idea of
domestic violence.”
A love for classic cars and hot rods inspired Jerry to put
on an auto show to benefit the shelter.
“I just took the idea and got to work,” said Jerry, who
enlisted the help of wife Lisa. The outcome was a successful
show in February 2004 in downtown Chandler. With auto
owners paying $25 to enter their cars, the show took in $1000
for My Sisters’ Place.
With support from the city of Chandler and downtown
businesses, Jerry has made the auto show an annual event,
adding rides for kids, auto part vendors, and bands.
Proceeds from the event have increased each year, with
more than $9000 raised at the 2006 show. Jerry and Lisa are
hoping to find a corporate sponsor so that they can make
the auto show a 2-day event and take in more money for My
Sisters’ Place.
For Jerry, the satisfaction lies in being able to write out
that check to My Sisters’ Place. “I just want the women at the
shelter to know that someone out there is helping them.”

“Our community is not immune from the crises of poverty and abuse. At Catholic Charities, we see a growing need for
refuge for victims of domestic violence, many of whom suffer from both poverty and abuse as a result of their situations.
My Sisters’ Place and our Pathways transitional living programs have received support from local governments and caring
individuals, but the need is still great. It truly will take all of us to end the cycle of violence. Our teenage pregnancy

Carl and Aune Lind have been generous supporters of
Catholic Charities for nearly a decade through their family
foundation.
“We like to support local organizations that are doing
good things in our community,” said Carl. “We heard good
reports about what Catholic Charities was doing.”
The Linds, who celebrated their 65th wedding
anniversary this year, raised three children and lived for
many years in Minnesota, where Carl worked as a banker.
After splitting their time between Minnesota and Arizona
for several years, they made Arizona their permanent home
in 1991.
The Linds care deeply about people in need and
understand the challenges and hardships many people
face in today’s world—hence their desire to include Catholic
Charities as one of their “special charities of choice.”
The desire to support Catholic Charities and other
charitable organizations comes out of their own experience
with hardship. Carl graduated from high school in 1935, in
some of the darkest times of the Great Depression.
“Things were so tough then, and there was no way my
folks could afford to send me to college,” said Carl. “But
after that, things went better for us than we ever expected.
We decided we needed to pay something back.”

“The health and welfare of our children is critical to the future of our communities. Education and supportive families are the two
most important factors in the development of children. At Catholic Charities, protecting and nurturing children and strengthening
families are interdependent. As the provider of Head Start for the West Valley, Catholic Charities supports low-income children
and their families with free developmental preschool education services. Recent funding reductions for Head Start by federal
sources have heightened the need for support from our community. Our other essential programs, including those addressing
pregnancy, parenting skills and adoption, and emergency assistance, depend on the generous and committed support of donors,
volunteers and staff, once again proving that, it really does take all of us to serve those in need.”

For 18 years, a group of dedicated women in Yavapai County
has been working together for a single purpose—to plan an
annual gala to benefit Catholic Charities in Prescott.
The committee’s work is inspired by a desire to support
an agency that does so much good in the community. “If we
can help the agency help just one person, it’s worth it,” said
Ann Hampton, current chair of the committee.
Working in separate subcommittees, the more than 30
committee members secure accommodations, plan the menu
and decor, arrange entertainment, choose a theme, send
out invitations, and publicize the event. One subcommittee
specifically solicits donations from individuals and
businesses in the few months preceding the gala.
On average, the gala brings in about $40,000 in
unrestricted funds—a boon to the agency, which can
allocate the money as it sees fit.
The gala also generates good will and a greater
awareness of Catholic Charities’ contributions to the
community. “People learn that Catholic Charities serves
everyone in our community, not just Catholics,” said Kathy
Sischka, long-time chair of the committee and current
member.
“These women are remarkable—they make it happen,”
said Cathy Peterson, Regional Director of Catholic Charities

County is growing rapidly; fortunately, Catholic Charities has continued to expand services in our Prescott and Cottonwood sites
to meet the growing needs in our area. None of this would be possible without the generous support of our community. Simple
acts of kindness meant 1,800 residents enjoyed the holidays through our Adopt-a-Family program. On a larger scale, volunteers
raised over $44,000 through the Gala Ball. These are only a few examples that demonstrate that it does take all of us to bring

Bill and Barbara Packard first got involved with Catholic
Charities in Flagstaff eight years ago when Aspen House, the
agency’s group home for youth, was in need of refurbishing.
As a contractor, Bill offered his expertise. It wasn’t long
before he, and then Barbara, joined the local Catholic
Charities advisory board.
Since then, Bill and Barbara have regularly given of
their time and talents to support Catholic Charities. As
volunteer manager at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store,
Barbara works closely with Catholic Charities’ emergency
services staff to fill client clothing voucher requests. And
Bill responds quickly when the agency needs repairs to
facilities.
Bill and Barbara are eager to help. “Catholic Charities
provides daily support and guidance for disadvantaged
people,” says Bill. “People in crisis know there is someone
on their side.”
Once again, Bill and Barbara provided their
organizational skills as Catholic Charities prepared to open
the new emergency family shelter in Flagstaff. Bill made trips
around town to pick up donated furniture while Barbara
inventoried donated items and kept track of what was still
needed. They sent out letters to community members to
request financial support or in-kind donations.
“Bill and Barbara are the embodiment of faith in
action,” said Regional Directory Susan Brenchley. “They are
positive, determined and organized. We are so fortunate
to have their many talents available to the agency and our
clients.”
