Basketmaker I I I - Pueblo I. ca 500-850 A.D. DESCRIPTION: Constructed: by coi I ing and scraping. Core color: I ight to dark gray. Fired: in reducing atmosphere. Temper: crushed rock. usually andesite or diorite. Core texture: coarse to medium. Vessel walls: strong. Surf,ace finish: scraped. not polished. Finish IS rather smooth. but with occasional grains of temper on the surface. Interiors of bowls usually better finished than exteriors. Occasional streaks where grains of temper have been dragged across the surface during scraping. Surface color: light gray to white, occasionally a creamy white. Fire clouds common. Thickness of wal Is: maximum 7.5 mm .• minimum 2.5 mm .• average about 4.5 mm. Forms: bowls. large jars with elongated tapering necks. pitchers. half-gourd ladles. and seed Paint: mineral. Decoration: recti linear designs. bowls. Rims: IA3. Design elements usually cut across the InterIor of bowls. dividing the bowl into two. three or four parts. No banding lines. Design sparse. leaving large undecorated areas. Occasional life forms. Occasionally found with fugitive red exteriors. COMPARISONS: Same as Twin Trees Black-on-white except for the lack of polishing. Same as La Plata Black-on-white except for the use of crushed rock temper instead of sand., Same as Lino Black-on-gray except for use of crushed rock temper and the use of minerai rather than carbon paint. RANGE: North of the San Juan River. rado. from the Animas westward to the Colo- REMARKS: This type of pottery has usually been classified as La Plata Black-on-whlte. even though the La Plata definition gives the temper as sand. The creation of a new type for the crushed rock-tempered pottery conforms with the standard tempering techniques from north of the San Juan. and serves to allow differentiation of types from sites north and south of the river.
