The Non-Reader - Failure Free Reading
Chronic Non-Responders: The Non-Reader A Unique Professional Development Opportunity New Hope for Non-Readers Did you hear? The Nation’s Report Card has just been released, and, once more, reading comprehension scores of 4th and 8th students still remain flat since 1992 based on nationally representative samples of more than 178,000 fourth-graders and 160,000 eighth-graders who participated in the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in reading. This is terrible news considering the vast amount of money, time and energy over the past decade in the use of “scientifically validated research based” programs. Billions of dollars have been invested, teachers trained, schools closed and yet there’s been no statistically significant growth in reading comprehension over the past 27 years? How could the “experts” have been so wrong? The simple answer is, no one reading approach works for all students. This is especially true for non-readers – a population that has been virtually untouched for the past 27 years. Even worse, non-readers are the key to reducing the achievement gap, drop out rate and special education placement. Fortunately there is help! No one knows Non-Readers like Dr. Joe Lockavitch, author of The Failure Free Reading Methodology: New Hope for Non-Readers. For the past 30 years, Dr. Lockavitch has trained tens of thousands of teachers, parents and administrators across the nation on how to reach the unique needs of the non-reader population. Dr. Joseph F. Lockavitch is the author and developer of: The Failure Free Reading Program, Don’t Close the Book on Your Not-Yet Readers, Verbal Master-An Accelerated Vocabulary Program, The Test of Lateral Awareness and Directionality and dozens of published articles. His most recent research can be found in the Australian Journal of Learning Disabilities, the Journal of Learning Disabilities , Special Services in the Schools, The Journal of At-Risk Issues and The Florida Reading Quarterly. www.failurefree.com “A dynamic presentation providing background research and a demonstration of application. Debunking incorrect assumptions about teaching reading.” - Don Roberts, Academic Manager, Jacksonville, FL “The presentation was very clear and it seems easy to implement the program/techniques in my classroom. I like the idea that now I know what my kids need.Very informative- worth checking it out. The presentation gave me the sense that- ‘Hey, I can do this with my kids.’” - Kelli McMillan, 3rd Grade Teacher, Cherryvale, KS A Twenty Year Quest 20 years ago Dr. Lockavitch developed a highly structured teaching method designed to explicitly teach the 2,605 highest frequency core Academic vocabulary words to the students that couldn’t be reached with traditional approaches. He called the program Failure Free Reading because it literally created a “failure free reading environment” for students who had previously failed all other approaches. Teachers of Tier II and Tier III Students Need Help The success was incredible. Students who could not read the word “cat” were reading complete passages about “felines” with fluency and full comprehension. Today, Failure Free Reading publishes multisensory language development (non-phonic) interventions that rapidly build vocabulary, fluency, comprehension – and confidence -- for the lowest level readers in grades 1-12 in site across the nation. Dr. Lockavitch’s research has been published in nine national and international educational journals and his after-school tutoring programs have clocked well over 500,000 hours of instruction with thousands of America’s lowest literacy students across the nation. Now Teachers Can Learn the Specific Techniques Dr. Lockavitch Developed to Turn this Population Around! Non-Readers are Different. Non-Readers need Different. Non-Readers’ Teachers need to know the Difference. Dr. Lockavitch’s Unique Training Program will Train Professionals to “Unlock the Instructional Key” in How to Reach their Hardest to Reach Students There are really three distinct groups that fall under America’s “low literacy umbrella”: poor, struggling and non-readers. Each group requires a different instructional approach. Trying to modify a single approach with techniques such as smaller group size or one on one implementation for those students who are not responding will not cure the problem. You simply cannot mix and match these three groups. This is especially true for the non-readers, who, regardless of age, are different. Non-readers need a different approach, and Failure Free Reading was designed to meet their unique instructional needs. A Unique Staff Development Opportunity You will learn... Now Dr. Lockavitch has taken his invaluable experience, gained over the past 30 years, and put it into a very easy to understand staff development multi-media format for teachers, parents and administrators trying to cope with those students who simply have defied conventional interventions. • To implement evidence-based instructional strategies that will help build sustainable capacity for improving teaching and learning in Title I schools and Special Education classrooms Dr. Lockavitch’s staff development package utilizes a combination of video, audio and an easy to read book and workbook, chocked-filled with invaluable information on how to significantly increase the reading comprehension, vocabulary and fluency level of the hardest to reach students in the classroom. Finally, K-12 Teachers and Administrators of At-Risk, Minority, Low Income, ESOL and Special Education Students of all ages across the nation will have access to some of most effective instructional approaches available. Even better, they will learn these highly effective instructional techniques specifically designed for non-readers/treatment resisters of all ages and classifications in the privacy of their own personal learning environment – on their computer, in their car, at–home or in small groups at school with their colleagues. • To develop positive behavioral supports to improve outcomes for students with disabilities in the regular classroom • To allow K-12 Teachers (Regular, Content Area, Title I, ESOL and Special Needs) to significantly increase the academic language and literacy skills of the lowest literacy students. • To significantly increase the independent “time on task” of lowest literacy students within the regular classroom. • To be able to identify and evaluate commercial curriculum materials best suited for lowest literacy students. • To learn how to modify instructional materials and practices to accommodate lowest-literacy students of all classifications within the regular classroom.
