NHS Fundraiser for Animal Shelter
The week of March 9 - 13th was busy with activity at Ionia High
School as the National Honor Society hosted several different fundraiser events to help our furry friends at the Ionia County animal
shelter.
We had hoped to gather 500 pounds of food along with treats, toys
and grooming aids, but instead collected over 3,000 pounds of dry
and canned pet foods. NHS also donated over $400 to the shelter for
miscellaneous needs. This was an event that drew everyone together for the common good
of our pet community. Teachers shared photos of their pets (poster
and banners in the hall) along with their own shelter pet stories on
our daily announcements. NHS members had their own pet board
of pictures .... it is amazing how animals touch our lives, our hearts,
and through this project we saw a common bond.
A special thank you to the parents of our students who lugged 50
pound bags of pet food upstairs and down the halls to our storage
room. Our wonderful and gracious parents have supported NHS
here at Ionia High School throughout this entire year in so many
ways and in so many different events. I appreciate all that they do
and say!
Izzie Tackmann, the daughter of one of our math teachers, used her
birthday money to buy a huge supply of dog treats, toys, toys, and
more toys, along with shampoo. It is amazing how this project has
influenced so many different generations to come together. Izzie
goes to Lowell Public Schools but felt compelled to join in our crusade ... school districts didn’t matter to this young lady.
NHS coordinated the food drive with PI day. This year it was unique
.... 3.1415 ... And Pi goes naturally with pie! We held a change war
for the teacher or administrator with the most change in their jar receiving a cream pie in the face and a pie for their dinner table. Along
with this we sold raffle tickets to select the pie thrower. I personally
found it fascinating that the students were more interested in who
would receive the pie than throwing the pie! Coach Holes was barely the winner of a delicious coconut cream pie in the face thrown
by William Sorrell. Of course, the proceeds all went to the Animal
Shelter while the fun memories of the event remain here at IHS.

Michigan Department of Education Reviews Ionia Public Schools
Ionia Public Schools hosted members of the Office of Field Services (OFS) from the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) on
March 4th and 5th, 2015. The district, Jefferson Elementary, and
Ionia Middle School were the subject of an On-Site Review. This
is a cyclical review (5 years) where they focus on curriculum, assessment, professional development, data desegregation, school
improvement, parental involvement, Title I programs, Title II programs, and written procedures in the aforementioned areas. I owe
many thanks to everyone who participated which included administrators, teachers, and parents.
discussion at the district level was led by Associate Superintendent,
Ben Kirby. Each review meeting focused on 25-40 indicators related
to quality schools and best practice. The staff from MDE gave feedback regarding all of the areas in which
they felt that we needed to change for improvement. Excitedly, of the
many indicators that were reviewed, our schools had very few areas,
mostly with a focus on parental involvement. Both schools are doing
a wonderful job and that was confirmed in the review. On day one, the OFS teams reviewed Jefferson and IMS programs
while meeting in their respective buildings with designated participants. The programs were discussed at length during the three hour
meetings which began with a data presentation from principals
Cheri Meier and Matt Vogel. Both school teams did a wonderful job
representing every day practice from all accounts.
All of the schools were represented at the table during the district
review and we were able to address the student achievement data,
collaboration, professional development, and curriculum across the
district. They were very complimentary of the work that we have undergone and encouraged by the practices that we use in the district.
MDE gave us no changes required at the district level. The assessment given is a credit to all of us in Ionia Public Schools as we work
together to do great things for our students. During day two, the meeting was focused on the district level. The
district leadership team, including principals, central office staff,
and the State and Federal Programs Coordinator did equally well
as they discussed the district processes and procedures. The data
Our community and school personnel can be proud of our schools
and the work we are doing with students. Congratulations go out to
the entire staff as we work together to make a difference with our
students every day.
Middle School Leadership Class –
Where. Everyone. Belongs. (WEB)
This school year, the Ionia Middle School (IMS) has had almost 200
students in the WEB – Where. Everyone. Belongs. leadership class
and another 50 who are identified as WEB Leaders in the building. The WEB class does activities like promoting school appreciation,
school connectedness, and the welcoming of new students – and
not just 6th graders - but ALL new students to IMS. WEB promotes the participation in community service projects, acknowledges and celebrates student and teacher success, and creates and
promotes anti-bullying programs. They have created a student section complete with a banner & t-shirt for all IMS athletic events. The class develops leader expectations and ways to
hold leaders
accountable to these expectations. WEB creates
and runs
the morning audio announcements, as
well
as the announcement
bulletin boards in and
outside of school. This
includes the addition of
two TV’s for a video announcement program.

This was a successful fundraising drive which meant
much planning and many efforts by many people to make
it successful. I am privileged
to be working with a top
notch board of NHS officers. Sadie Shattuck is our NHS
president, Emily Nemeth
as our vice-president, Ben
Lewis as secretary, and Alex
Fountain as treasurer. Our
members have all been generous in supplying pet food,
time making fantastic posters and banners, and their
energy in getting the student
body motivated.

Ionia Science Olympiad hosted its third
home invitational on February 21st. At the
event, 40 teams competed from around the
state at the invitational. Several of the teams
frequently compete at the state and national
levels. During the tournament, Ionia had a
good showing with four of our high school
students receiving metals. Team Captain
Matt Felice and Bobby Eppler received special recognition in the Chemistry lab event,
and Kelsi Merrifield, and Kaitlyn Hickok
metaled in the Write it-Do it event. The
team scored very well placing 13th overall
but second when compared to the teams in
our region. The event would not have been
possible but for the constant efforts of a
small army of volunteers who gave up their
time and energy to make it possible. Thank
you!
Twin Rivers Elementary Poster Contest Michigan Wellhead Protection Program
Pictured: Back Row/Left to Right: Landon Duell (1st place – 4th grade), Olivia
Herbstreith, Madeline McGee, Trenton Greenfield, Jordan Dooley (1st place
– 5th grade), Jordyn Diebel. Middle Row: Tori Hixson, Brittney Bush (1st
place – 2nd grade), Mason Struble, Isabell Helman (1st place – 3rd grade/
cover winner), Payton Gregersen, Bailee Rux. Front Row: Elise Simon (1st
place – 1st grade), Joanna Platte, Kaydents Wieland, Brooklynn Burhans (1st
place – Kindergarten), Virginia Palmer. Not Pictured: Eddie Johnson.
All Twin Rivers students created a poster based on a different theme
at each grade level related to water conservation and protection.
(See article on the right of the Michigan Wellhead Protection Program.) Themes included – Turn off the water when you brush your
teeth; take a shower - not a bath; water your lawn in the morning or
after the sun goes down; reduce, reuse and recycle your trash; don’t
pour dangerous chemicals down the drain or on the ground; and,
keep grass clippings out of the lakes and rivers.
All of the posters were created in art class with art teacher, Jennifer
Henry. She narrowed the pictures down to ten posters at each grade
level. The Wellhead Protection Committee selected the top three
posters at each grade level without knowing the names of the artists.
Since the early 2000’s, the Village of Lyons and the Village of Muir have
been working through the Michigan Wellhead Protection Program,
a federal program aimed at protecting drinking water within local
communities. Although this program is voluntary, communities that
participate, take the necessary steps to safeguard their drinking water
sources from contaminants. Among the many facets of the program,
both Villages had to implement public education activities. Both Villages worked with the Michigan Rural Water Association (MRWA) to
apply for grant funding through the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). A portion of the grant was dedicated to
educating students in Lyons and Muir.
With a previous grant, the Village of Muir purchased a groundwater
model. Through the groundwater model, students have the opportunity to see what life looks like underground and witness what happens when a drinking water well becomes contaminated. The model
shows students how contamination moves through the groundwater
cycle and shows what could potentially be impacted. In the winter of
2015, both Villages worked with the local elementary school to organize a drinking water protection poster contest. Kindergarten through
fifth grade students were given the challenge of designing a poster that
demonstrated the importance and protection of water. Each class was
given a specific topic to focus on and three winners from each class
were chosen to be featured in the 18-month calendar.
The Village of Lyons and Village of Muir Wellhead Protection Committee reviewed the submittals of posters from Twin Rivers Elementary school. According to Kelly Hon, MRWA Source Water Protection
Specialist, “The artwork submitted was fantastic and creative. Consequently, it was difficult to decide on the final winners!” The Committee chose Isabell Helman, third grade student as the 2015 cover
winner. Isabell will receive a $75 cash prize for her winning design. In
addition, seventeen more drawings were chosen, and the top winner
from each grade will receive a $50 cash prize.
The Village would like to thank Twin Rivers Elementary teachers for
making this project a success! For more information about the Village of Muir or Village of Lyons Wellhead Protection Programs or to
get involved, please contact Lyndon Randall, Village of Muir at (989)
855-2144 or Susan Craft, Village of Lyons at (989) 855-2125.
Boyce Elementary School March is Reading Month Activities
Boyce Elementary celebrated March is Reading Month with some fun activities. Family
Reading Night was a success raising over $450 for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
Also during the evening, students and parents were entertained by Ionia Community Librarian Mike Golczynski as he read some great stories to the audience. Local author Kristi
Washbourn talked about writing and self-publishing. She read excerpts from her book
series, The Jack O’Rourke Series. Kristi sold and autographed 20 copies of her books and
donated all proceeds back to the DPIL. Boyce had a storyteller assembly welcoming back
ex-Ionia teacher Jenifer Strauss to share her wonderful stories. Students had fun on Tuesdays where they were able to “read a t-shirt day”, “dress as their favorite book character”
and “pajama day”. Students donated .25 cents on days they participated with all proceeds
going to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Boyce students also participated in a door
decorating contest. Each teacher picked a Dr. Seuss book and decorated their classroom
door to look like the cover. Students also drew favorite book covers with the winners getting to paint their book cover on a ceiling tile in the Boyce hallway. Students also had a
school wide reading goal of 135,000 minutes. They were able to reach their goal!

IPS Scholarship Endowment Fund Reaches $1,000,000.00++ mark!!!
With staff and community support, the Ionia Public Schools Scholarship Endowment Fund has had a solid balance this year of $1 million plus!!!!! Thanks to the generosity of many Ionia Public School
Alumni, Local Community Members, and IPS Staff members, we
continue to see this scholarship fund grow annually, allowing more
financial grants to be dispersed to IPS graduates.
In February 2005, the Ionia Board of Education elected to deposit
the district scholarship funds with the Grand Rapids Community
Foundation. This foundation is a non-profit entity recognized by
the State of Michigan and offers significant tax benefits to qualifying
contributors. Additionally, the GR Foundation offers the security of
a larger foundation and has a history of paying approximately a five
percent dividend. Currently IPS has $1,023,706.83 on deposit with
the GR Foundation. One hundred percent of the dividends based
on current balance will be given in the form of scholarships to nearly
52 seniors in the class of 2015; not only from Ionia High School, but
also a top graduate attending Douglas R. Welch High School.
Ten years ago, per the investment decision of the IPS Board of Education, a Scholarship Endowment Board was formed. The vision of
this Board and the IPS Board of Education was to grow this fund so
that a perpetual increase of return (dividends) would allow for an
increase in the number of scholarships awarded each year until every graduate from Ionia Public Schools who wished to pursue posthigh school education or graduate training would receive financial
assistance to do so.
