Engage God...Engage One Another...Engage Life!
From Pastor Scott
The other night I caught the tail end of a preview of an upcoming show on PBS. It was one of a series
of four shows on Nova called “Making Stuff.” The episode being advertised was “Making Stuff
Faster.” I saw enough to be intrigued and I went online to the PBS website to read a description of
the show. Here’s what I found:
Are there physical limits to how fast humans can go? David Pogue wants to find out how much we
can tweak physiology and engineering to move humans and machines even faster. He investigates
everything from lightning-fast electric muscle cars to ultra-sleek sailboats to ultra-fast cameras and
quantum teleportation. But faster is also about efficiency and the science of optimization: getting
things done in less time. From the floor of the New York Stock Exchange to UPS headquarters and
inside a packed 737, Pogue’s quest for ultimate speed limits takes him to unexpected places where he
comes face-to-face with the final frontiers of speed. NOVA also explores important questions: Is it
possible to go too fast? Have we hit a point where innovation outpaces our ability to keep up?
I don’t know if I’ll actually ever see the show, but I do appreciate the questions it tackles – Is it
possible to go too fast? Have we hit the point where innovation outpaces our ability to keep up?
I don’t consider myself an old person, but I suppose I’m like many in recent generations that have
come before me, observing how much their world has changed in their lifetime and wondering
where it is rushing off to. Everything moves faster. We are addicted to speed. It is as if waiting is
patently unfair, patience is a lost art, and delayed gratification is some sort of punishment.
I think that’s why I appreciate the seasons of Advent and Lent so much. They are seasons that wrap
themselves around waiting. Yes, a sense of anticipation teases our waiting, but the really good gifts
of these seasons are given to those who take their time, slow down, go deep, and “stop to smell the
roses.”
The four-week churchy season of Advent is now upon us. While the eager world around us rushes off
to stores (now opening their doors on Thanksgiving Day), many disciples of Jesus take advantage of a
more ancient rhythm to prepare for something worth the wait… the coming of the Christ in the past,
the present, and the future. (“Advent” comes from the Latin ad venire that means “to come”). I have
become convinced that the most amazing Christmas gifts come to those who know how to wait.
Our church’s 4-week observance of Advent seeks to find the right balance between celebration and
reflection. The goal is to enjoy the delight of these days that hurry us toward Christmas, but not so
fast that we forget who we are or what is at the core of our lives. Because spiritually speaking, it is
possible to go too fast! I invite you to review the insert in this Courier that outlines the gifts of Advent
– Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. Each week we’ll light an Advent Candle and ponder what these ancient
gifts can mean to our modern fast lives. Scattered along the way are Advent gatherings for you to
enjoy – like hanging greens, and merry meals, and heart-warming carols sung to others on our way to
Engage God...Engage One Another...Engage Life!
the manger.
But there can be no true celebration of the coming of Christ without an active concern for those who hunger,
hurt, and/or struggle to cling to hope. If Christ’s coming means anything, it means God’s redeeming love
born in our hearts and expressed in our compassion. So this Advent we will have a special emphasis on the
Philippines and the recovery efforts of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) following the
typhoon that created such havoc there. Many of you have given a donation already, but the needs are great
and this is one situation in which waiting is not helpful. One anonymous donor is concerned enough to raise
this challenge to us – he will match up to $1,000 every dollar we raise during Advent for the work of UMCOR
in the Philippines. See for yourself the updates available on the Internet at http://www.umcor.org/UMCOR/
Resources/Hotline-News-Archives and if you are moved to make your own Advent gift, simply write a check
to First UMC and mark on the memo line: International Disaster Response, Advance #982450.
And may the gladness of Christmas which is Hope; the spirit of Christmas which is Peace; the reverence of
Christmas which is Joy; and the heart of Christmas which is Love; be yours now, tomorrow, and forever.

ENGAGING FAITH: WINTER 2014 OPPORTUNITIES COMING SOON
The church’s Engaging Faith Team has been hard at work creating the Engaging Faith commitments and
leadership challenges for Winter 2014. Engaging Faith is our way of growing as disciples of Jesus Christ. It is
comprised of three main components – Engaging God (personal spiritual practices), Engaging One Another (a
nurturing community of faith) and Engaging Life (applying our faith in the real world) – and runs for six weeks
or so. The Winter 2014 season of faith launches on Sunday, January 4. Soon every one connected with
RFUMC will be presented a packet of Engaging Faith materials, including a response card that will be
dedicated in worship on December 15. Last fall, we received 88 response forms. This time around we hope
for even more.
Get engaged! You’ll be glad you did!
From Doreen Barlow
Give yourself the gift of forgiveness for Christmas:
I will greet this day with a forgiving spirit. I forgive even those who do not ask for forgiveness.
Many times we can seethe in anger at a word or deed thrown into our lives by an unthinking or uncaring
person. We may have wasted valuable time imagining revenge or confrontation… Perhaps one gift to
ourselves is to agree that now and forevermore we will silently offer our forgiveness even to those who do
not see that they need it. By the act of forgiving, I am no longer consumed by unproductive thoughts. We can
give up our bitterness. We can be content in our soul and effective again in our life.
I will greet this day with a forgiving spirit. I will forgive those who criticize me.
Knowing that slavery in any form is wrong, we can know that the person who lives a life according to the
opinion of others is a slave. We do not need to be a slave. We can know that criticism is part of the price we
pay for leaping past mediocrity.
(continued on page 3)
Engage God...Engage One Another...Engage Life!
I will greet this day with a forgiving spirit. I will forgive myself.
Sometimes our greatest enemy is ourselves. Every mistake, every miscalculation, every stumble we make is
played again and again in our minds. Every broken promise, every day wasted, every goal not reached can
compound the disgust we feel for the lack of achievement in our lives.
Today we can realize that it is impossible to fight an enemy living in our head. By forgiving ourselves, we
erase the doubts, fears and frustration that have kept our past in the present. From this day forward, our
history will cease to control our destiny. I will forgive myself. My life has just begun.
Forgiveness is a gift beyond reason, beyond tradition, beyond any experience we can possibly imagine. Wrap
up a gift for yourself this Christmas. Put on the glistening gold wrapping paper, tie on a big red bow and
attach a gift card. To me. From Jesus.

CHILDREN
Children are welcome at all of our Advent festivities. The Hanging of the Greens Party
presents an opportunity for children to help create an Advent wreath for the home. Caroling
is a way for them to share their joy in the Christmas season with others. As always, children
are welcome at worship too. Special quiet worship activities are available.

Meet Your Fellow Parishioner…Mary Easely
By Thelma Guffy
December’s Gift to the Church
Mary is one of the people in our congregation that
you can count on to help! She has spent more time at the sink
in our kitchen than almost anyone, washing jars for the jam
and jelly makers: washing dishes for any UMW dinner, making
burritos for Casa de Belen.... It is appropriate that she is
pictured by our church kitchen sink!
Mary was born in Tilden, Nebraska, a community
in Northeastern Nebraska. She had two brothers and a sister,
and worked on the family farm while growing up. She
attended a one room school house and graduated from Tilden
High School. While in high school she worked in a grocery
store and continued working there after graduation. Over the
years she worked in a hardware store, meat market, and
hospital. Her dad died in 1963 and the following year she and her mother moved to Roseburg where her
mother had friends. Mary became a member of Roseburg’s First United Methodist Church, and worked at
the Court House in the county clerk’s office.
Mary’s mother died in 1983, so she was alone until one week when she went to Camp Magruder to an
adult camp. There she met Charles Easley, a Methodist pastor who was on staff there leading one of the
camps. They were married in 1987 and, as Mary says, “I acquired not only a husband, but three daughters, 2
son-in-laws, six grandchildren, a dog and a cat!” The family now includes 8 great grandchildren. Mary and
Charles lived in Rockaway Beach, OR and enjoyed traveling to distant places. In 1990 they took a trip to
Europe, Budapest, Venice, and Germany. A highlight was seeing the Passion Play at Oberammergau in
Bavaria. This play is performed once every ten years, and they planned the trip to include it. They went to
Russia in 1995 on a mission trip entitled “To Russia with Love”, when they lived with a Russian family for a
week. Later, in 2002, they went to China. Along with these exotic trips, Mary said she had been to Hawaii,
on a cruise in the Caribbean, and several trips around the United States. Charles died in 2006 and in 2009
Mary moved back to Roseburg. She is active in the church, working where needed. She knits for the Shawl
Ministry, makes burritos, makes the plastic bag mats for the homeless, and is always working in the kitchen
when a meal is needed, or jam and jelly is being made. She is a gift to this church, and we thank her for her
willing help.

Thank you for the beautiful dresses. I have

challenging here, as parents are very reluctant
to accept “charity”. I was, however, finally
able to donate 8 dresses today to a girl that lost all her
clothes in a fire. The parents were very, very grateful
and bless you from Botswana. Thanks so much for
your part in helping this girl….Say hello to everyone!

Fellowship Time
We all enjoy our coffee fellowship. Your help is needed. Sign-up sheets will be on the wall by the kitchen
door for you to share in the work for this fellowship in the following ways:
1) Flipside service needs someone to come a few minutes early to make coffee When no one signs up,
there will be no coffee. 2) We like to use mugs, we need mug washers; otherwise we’ll use recyclable
plastic cups. 3)10:30 fellowship volunteers need to check leftover coffee and supplement if necessary,
and do a little cleanup afterwards. 4) People are not asked to bring food, but any food contributed will be
served. Donations for Fair Trade coffee, tea, cocoa, flavored creamers, 1/2 & 1/2 help our small budget.

Warming Center Training
Warming centers are emergency shelters that open on the coldest nights of the year to
provide a safe, warm place for those without adequate shelter. This year the site in Roseburg
will be at Faith Lutheran Church on Kenwood St. The successful operation of the Warming
Center is dependent on volunteers. Last year volunteers dedicated over 1000 hours to make sure the
center could be open. If you are interested in helping, there is one more training opportunity available on
Saturday, December 14th at 2 p.m. There are volunteer opportunities on site as well as background
support. For more information please contact Ian Smith at 541-817-9428.
Two Updates From Terri Lundy on Little Dresses
“Donated some dresses at a primary school today. We really could use more dresses...The medium seems
to be the best size for these girls.” Terri sent us these pictures:
And another e-mail from Terri:
“This is one of the photos from the day that I donated many of the dresses to a local primary school. I will
be donating the rest to another primary school tomorrow. Finally!! I could really see the joy in the faces of
the girls when they got the dresses. Please send more. Remember that my postal address is PO Box 11773,
Kanye, Botswana . No zip code. Thanks from all the girls here!!”
Another box is on its way to Terri . We’d like to send more medium size (24-29” long) dresses. If you’d
like to make some dresses, you can pick up a pattern in the church office or go to
www.nancysnotions.com. We can also use donations of adult 100% cotton T shirts in S,M. or L without
pockets or designs to make shorts for boys. Help with postage to send the boxes is also appreciated.
