Everyone is working hard. They are making costumes and studying their lines. There is so much to do. It’s better not to waste any time. The play takes place in Kansas where people were dressed as farmers. Yesterday I told you about the show. Today we are making costumes. How exciting! Clothes were different years ago. Did princesses wear skirts? What did they wear? Wait, wait! Let’s look at each costume. Lucy give this picture to your classmate! Did knights use trainers? Paul, give this picture to Fred, please. Ok. Dorothy’s aunt wore a long skirt and a big apron. Ok. Cloth is better than paper. 12 Our stage costumes We can use pieces of red paper to make the skirt and white paper for the apron. Our stage costumes Many years ago knights didn’t wear trousers like ours. Now for the colours. Green is better than red. Their clothes were heavier because they were made of iron. Hmm... green is my favourite. Knights wore armours too. The Tinman’s costume is heavier than the Lion’s costume. We can make it out of heavy cloth. Ok, what about cotton? No, wool is better. It is heavier than cotton. And for the Lion we need some crêpe paper and some wool. Ok! We need some straw for the Scarecrow, an old hat, and some patches. For the Tinman we need a funnel for the hat and an axe. For Toto we need some black tights and a black T-shirt. And black ears too. Don’t forget the tail. Now for Dorothy. A white blouse and a check apron. She wants plaits and blue ribbons. 13 Our stage costumes Let’s sing! Look at us! The Lion is the loudest of all. The Tinman is the tallest of all. The Scarecrow is the cleverest of all. And Toto is so short. How often do you find special friends? How often do you make some new friends? It’s easy, just put out your two hands. Together life is fun. Don’t make anything in a hurry. Take time to prepare every costume. Come here, take a peek in the mirror. And see how you all come to life. 14 Our stage costumes Our stage costumes Look at the pictures. Read, then write. This is the diary which belongs to Dorothy. It’s her diary. It belongs to her.
