ATTRACTIONS
ATTRACTIONS
The Ohio Frontier
Memories are made of these ...
It's 1778 .. . it's cold
and snow is blowing all
around you. You have
little food to eat. Now
imagine walking from
Fort Pitt to what was
the western most outpost of the United
States. It was
November and the Continental army was ordered to march .. .
and march they did. From Pittsburgh to Bolivar (100 miles)
where Fort Laurens was constructed using trees cut by hand .
Our country 's first veterans built the Fort to protect themselves from the enemy. But forced to search for food as supplies dwindled, an unsuspecting group of soldiers left the fort
and were ambushed by the British and Native American
forces leaving seventeen dead . Further starvation forced
many of the American Soldiers to eat roots and grass growing
beneath the Fort walls. They also resorted to broiling their
own moccasin and animal hides to create a broth for nutrition.
Aristotle once said, "Educating the mind without educating
the heart is no education at all." We would agree . And so
while we know that when you travel you want to relax and be
entertained, we would also like you to take a little of
Tuscarawas County home with you ... even if it is just a
memory.
The story of Fort Laurens is told nightly during the summer
by the cast of "Trumpet in the Land" ... an outdoor theater
production which brings to life the tragic story of David
Zeisberger and his Christian Indian followers as they struggled to bring peace despite the growing violence of the
Revolutionary War. Zeisberger had arrived in the Tuscarawas
Valley a few short years prior to the building of Fort Laurens
and struggled to build the first Christian settlement in the
wilderness calling it Schoenbrunn for "beautiful spring" . Just
months before Fort Laurens was built, the 300 inhabitants of
the village were forced to relocate to avoid the growing violence; but they could not escape it.
Whether you attend one of our performances at the Kent
State University Performing Arts Center or sit in small reparatory fashion at the 250 seat Little Theater, your memories of
Tuscarawas County will be fond. See the Led Zeppelin tribute band or learn science with "Sid the Science Kid" we
promise not to disappoint you or your family. Or listen to The
Tuscarawas County Phi lharmonic when they play to a sell-out
crowd at the PAC ... get your tickets early.
More of a hands-on person? Our Center for the Arts is just
the place to get your hands dirty. Whether it be metal, charcoal or acrylic paint, getting messy is part of the job. Or
bring the kids to the Uhrichsville Clay Museum and let them
get their hands dirty making their own Clay trivet.
You will share a sense of purpose during "Trumpet in the
Land's" historical rendition of Ohio History and the fight for
our freedom during the Revolutionary War. Or learn what it
was like to live as a renegade amongst the Indians during
"The White Savage". Maybe you will have a better understanding of the Amish and their faith during Amish themed
musicals at the Theater at the Carlisle Inn.
Educate your
mind, your heart
and your soul in
Tuscarawas
County.
Sadly, the war ravaged on and another Christian village,
Gnadenhutten, was also caught in the middle. It was 1781
and 90 captives were massacred by Pennsylvania Militiamen.

Who are the Amish?
The Industrial Age
In Amish Country, traffic habits
are different from the ordinary.
Travelers and visitors need to be
alert and cautious and watch for
the slow moving horse and buggy.
Many Amish ride bicycles and
walk along the side of roads .
Reduced speed and assured clear
distance is important for safety.
It is the early 1900s.
Steel is king and the
population of the US
travels by train. The
city of Dover is home
to Jeremiah E. Reeves
who, at the turn of the
century, was one of the
wealthiest men in the
area. His company,
OAndy Donaldson Photogrnphy
Reeves Steel, revolutionized the process for galvanizing steel,
making it almost rust proof. His story, and the story of the
beginning of the Industrial Age, begins at the Reeves
Museum. The opulent Victorian mansion's table is set, the
Regina music box is ready to play, and the servants are finishing last minute cleaning to ready the home for your arrival.
The Amish people, though
friendly and congenial, prefer not
to be photographed.
The Amish and the Mennonites History
The Amish and Mennonites are an outgrowth of the 16th century Anabaptist movement in Europe. During the Swiss
Protestant Reformation, this group of people were considered
radical for rejecting infant baptism and mandatory military
service. They immigrated to America in hope of religious freedom. From Somerset County, Pennsylvania, the first people of
Amish faith came to Ohio and settled in Sugarcreek inl808.
The Mennonite faith began first, with the Amish sect splitting
150 years later, led by Jacob Amman, to enforce stricter discipline with regard to communion and excommunication.
Although the Mennonite movement came first, most Holmes
and Tuscarawas County Mennonite churches were formed by
former Amish community members. For more detailed information see our website: www.traveltusc.com
Catch the Cache!
Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity where participants (cachers) hide and seek containers (geocaches, caches)
using a GPS or other mobile device. Our tour, "History
Makes a Left Turn" is a collection of eight geocaches spread
throughout the county. These caches were chosen for their
historic significance to our area's rich transportation history.

Travel now to
Dennison, where the
National Historic
Landmark Dennison
Railroad Depot served
1.3 million soldiers
during WWII. Feel the
wax paper sandwich
bags that volunteers so

in; touch the Morse code keys that train employees used to
relay important war messages to the east. Today you can take
a train ride during special events, sit in the dining car, feel the
wool blankets in the sleeper cars or see surgical equipment in
the hospital car.
It was also at this time that "Mooney" Warther sat on hi s
porch hearing those train whistles. He began to carve those
trains in his spare time. Warther
began by "whittling", but finished with 64 amazing, one of
kind, 100% accurate, to-scale
models, of some of the most
influential moments in train history. See the Lincoln Funeral
train or the driving of the gold
spike, two examples of the country's remarkable train history.

ATTRACTIONS
ATTRACTIONS ,
The Great Outdoors
Read the Movie
Don't Ii ke the confines of an
indoor museum? Try one of our
outdoor museums ...
Some people like books. Some people like movies. Which
one are you?
Construction began on the Ohio
and Erie Canal in the 1820s as a
means to facilitate the transportation of goods in and through
Ohio. Abandoned in 1913 it is
now designated as a National
Heritage area with over 110 miles
of trail stretching from Cleveland
to New Philadelphia. Along the
Bolivar to Zoar portion, remains
of the canal locks can be seen
and have informational plaques erected.
The Norma Johnson Center, with over 303 acres promotes
natural resources with educational opportunities about nonpoint source pollution or their annual Monarch Butterfly
Exhibit. Enjoy walking trails, five ponds, a wetland, suspension bridge, boardwalk, footbridge, bluebird trails, duck
boxes ... this outdoor museum will take you all day to explore.
Tuscora Park was opened in 1907 by the Reeves family of
Dover, because they wanted a Coney Island type theme park;
today the park is home to a wooden Herschel Spillman
carousel, with 36 hand carved horses and two chariots, and
enclosed gondola Ferris wheel, kiddie rides, miniature golf
batting cages swimming pool and fishing pond. Come for a
ride, or come for the day, you'll feel like a kid again.
Bring your mountain bike and ride the newly completed
mountain bike trails in Camp Tuscazoar. These "flow style"
trails are perfect for the entire family or competition team.
Located within an historic Camp, trail runners, hikers and
campers will enjoy the amenities, the scenic surroundings and
nature in abundance throughout the area.
Other trails in the area include old reclaimed rail beds in
Newcomerstown on the Buckhorn Creek Trail; a four mile
multipurpose trail connecting Dennison and Uhrichsville, the
Panhandle passage; and also a six mile trail connecting the
village of Tuscarawas with Gnadenhutten, the Zeisberger trail.
Our trails connect our history with our future.
Share the outdoors with the Lynn Drive-in, one of the
nations' few remaining outdoor theaters and enjoy first run
movies under the stars. Or come indoors for the Quaker
Theater, built in the 1940s and still showing movies today.
Recently renovated theater features new seating and exterior
neon lights.
More of a movie trivia person? Follow the trail of "Old
Fashioned'', "Love Finds You in Sugarcreek" or "Love Finds
You in Charm" full length movies filmed in the rolling hill s of
Tuscarawas County. Both Old Fashioned and Love Finds You
in Charm are due to be released in spring (books available
now), so look for them.
"Old Fashioned". Chivalry makes a comeback: former frat
boy Clay Walsh has given up his reckless lifestyle and settled
down to run an antique shop in a small Midwestern college
town . When Amber Hewson , a free spirited woman with a
gypsy soul, rents the apartment above his shop, Clay cannot
resist being attracted to her and her spontaneous and passionate embrace of life. Written by Rik Swartzwelder, who was
born and raised in New Philadelphia Ohio, the movie is due to
be released on Valentine's Day.
"Love Finds You in Sugarcreek, Ohio". Policewoman Rachel
Troyer loves peaceful Sugarcreek, where her elderly Amish
aunts run the famous farmhouse inn. But when stranger Joe
Matthews lands on her aunts' doorstep begging for shelter for
himself and his son, it's clear to Rachel that he's no tourist.
Come to Sugarcreek Ohio and see where this book was turned
into a movie.
" Love Finds You in Charm, Ohio". Emma Miller appears to
be the most blessed girl in Indiana. She teaches school, enjoys
the attention of a wonderful man and has a loving family. But
this Amish girl has more on her mind than buggies and bonnets. This movie will be released in June of2015.
City parks, 13 camping areas, hunting preserves, canoe livery's and water parks with raft slides and 18,000 sq. ft. of
swim area and nine golf course are awaiting your discovery.
Pack up the kids, throw your towel in the car, and pack up
your cooler. .. dive into Tuscarawas County.

Big Stories: Tuscarawas County, Ohio
Weather or not ....
Tuscarawas County experiences a moderate climate consisting of warm humid summers and occasional frigid winters.
Our warm season usually begin s around May 26 and continues through the latter part of September. During the warm
season, daytime temperatures tend to be 73 degrees or better
and we experience days with less cloudiness. On average, we
can expect precipitation during the warm season 40% of the
time on any given day. A quick thunderstorm is the primary
source for the vast majority of daily rain in the summer.
During the cold weather season which runs from December
through the first part of March, precipitation is more likely to
fall as snow. On average, Tuscarawas County sees about 25 inches of snowfall through the winter with January being the most
likely month for heavier snow. January is also when we see
frigid cold temperatures that sometimes dip below zero degrees.
Our winter season is the cloudiest time of the year. Our sky in
the winter is overcast or mostly cloudy 68% of the time.
Strong to severe thunderstorms are more likely in Tuscarawas
County during the spri ng months of April through June.
Damaging winds and hail are the main severe stom1 threats with
these storms and we are threatened by an occasional tornado.
No tornadoes have ever been stronger than EF-2 in the county.
