We are committed to responding to each other through communities and ministries of faith and love, addressing our spiritual, social and educational needs. We believe that each of us is called to be a supportive, compassionate, and caring Christian witness in Mission Viejo, the Diocese of Orange and in the world. Volume 11, Week 9 March 2, 2014 Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor’s Page Dear Friends in Christ, WHAT COMES NEXT? Now that major construction has been completed, people want to know if there are any other items that are being worked on for the new church. I’ll try to give you a brief synopsis of where we stand right now and what we’re hoping to do in the near future: The Doors – A set of glass doors just inside the vestibule are planned for the future, which will cut the noise of the main doors opening and closing by quite a bit. We’re also looking at adding hardware to some of the side doors, especially near the handicapped parking, to allow easier access from the parking lot. There remain some issues with the electronics on certain doors which have prevented us from activating the alarm system, but once that’s cleared up we can begin securing the church at night and allowing 24 hour access to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel through a keypad system. We’ll let everyone know when that’s ready to go. The Sound System – We have made some adjustments to the sound controls which should improve the sound along the sides of the building, but the best sound is always going to be directly in front of the main speakers. The Original Statuary – the original St. Kilian, Sacred Heart, Crucifix and Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal remain in our possession while we evaluate where we can place them. There are some diocesan requirements in this regard by which we must abide, so please be patient. The Stations of the Cross – As you know, the current Stations were borrowed from another parish because we ran out of time, essentially, and needed something ready for the Dedication. I’m getting estimates for our own set of Stations, to be designed along the same style as the wood reliefs and the new Mary and Joseph statues. These would be in our existing budget. The Sanctuary Lamp and the Tabernacle – The lamp is not as visible as we had hoped it would be from the main body of the church, so we plan to make it more prominent. There may also be a possibility of placing a tabernacle near the altar in addition to the one in the chapel, but that might take some time. The Outdoor Fountain and Shrine to the Blessed Mother – You’ll notice a semicircle of pavers just to the left of the arched entryway into the plaza, a space which has been set aside for the future outdoor fountain and Shrine. We are contemplating a curved wall of water cascading over the same granite we used for the baptismal font, serving as a backdrop for a reproduction of Michelangelo’s Pieta. Fr. Jim proposed that we make it a memorial for parishioners that have lost children over the years, which I think is a magnificent and moving idea. Candles, Anyone? It’s always consoling to see rows of lit candles in a church, but it’s also a challenge when dealing with local fire codes. In fact, county fire regulations are very stringent in this regard, and rightly so, since we have had instances both in this diocese and across Southern California of severe fire damage to some wonderful parish churches. Even so, candles are so conducive to a prayerful environment that I think it’s worth examining all possible options. Some of the above can be addressed almost immediately, while others will naturally take more time, so we’re still a work in progress. Fr. Bruce Thank you for your generous donation to the Collection for the Church in Latin America and Eastern and Central Europe. Your gift will ensure that present and future generations will have the opportunity to deepen and share their faith. Your support helps ensure adequate catechesis and lay leadership programs, along with strong formation for seminarians and religious. Thank you for taking this opportunity to share your faith. K i l ia n C a t h o l i c C h u r ch Page 3 Today’s Gospel “You cannot serve God and mammon.” This is part of the "Sermon on the Mount:' a collection of the sayings of Jesus, given in different places and at different times but collected here by St. Matthew in chapters 5-7. They concern the kingdom of God and how it may be attained. The section we read today deals with the things of this world and how we should be detached from them if we wish to be members of God's kingdom on earth and in heaven. Matthew 6:24-34. Jesus said to his disciples, "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well. "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The lesson is evident : God must have first place in our lives, if we really believe in a future, eternal life, as all Christians and most other sane men do. But we still must earn our living and work our passage through life. What Christ is warning us against is that we must not get so attached to, and so enslaved by, the things of this world, that we neglect God and our own eternal happiness. - Father Kevin O’Sullivan *Father Kevin was professor of Sacred Scripture at Christ the King Seminary and St. Bonaventura University in N.Y. and later in the National Seminary, Pretoria, South Africa and as a pastoral priest in Ireland. You will be glad you did! What makes one’s life successful? Money…power…popularity…happiness? Most philosophies of the well-lived life are based on having something. But the Christian perspective is that it is better to be something. The goal of the Christian life is to grow in loving relationship to Christ, becoming more like Him through the immersion of our entire selves in His Church, the Body of Christ. But our transformation in Christ will not occur until we recognize Him as our ultimate concern. In CONVERSION, explore the stories of six ordinary biblical figures with Father Barron and fellow parishioners, using their examples to grow ever closer to Christ. Father Robert Barron is an acclaimed author, theologian and podcasting priest from Chicago, and one of the world’s great and most innovative teachers of the Catholic faith. Rev. Robert E. Barron Give yourself a gift this Lenten Season and attend this program. Ash Wednesday, March 5th is almost here and we start preparing food for our 2014 Lenten Fish Fry the very next day. Each Friday night Fish Fry involves over 150 adults and students. On Friday night there are two volunteer shifts: one starts at 4:15pm generally, and the other at 5:45pm so you can both volunteer to help and also have dinner with friends or family. Then there is the clean up after the party. We can always use your help cleaning up the Hall afterwards. Please volunteer to help! There are six Friday night Fish Frys during Lent. We start food preparation on Thursday and Friday mornings, so join us starting March 6th. We start a little after 9:00 AM, but come whenever you can. There will always be coffee and donuts. The first Fish Fry will be March 7th. Right now, we are asking you to go to the St. Kilian website: www.stkilianmissionviejo.org, click on the Fish Fry link and then enter your info and work shift preferences. Confirmation emails will go out by the Sunday evening before each Fish Fry, but you may log into your account at any time to check if you've been confirmed. Although many of the youth and adult positions have been filled we are still looking for volunteers to fill open positions. Sign ups are on a first come first serve basis. Serving will count as confirmation service or service hours as needed. All volunteers will need to register on the St. Kilian Fish Fry website. Youths, don't forget to enter your grade level when registering. Youths 6th grade and above are able to volunteer. All youths are required to have a permission slip on file before volunteering. Youth permission slips can be found on the main Fish Fry webpage for Youth log ins only. Please turn in a signed permission slip on the first day of volunteering or drop off at the Parish office. Any questions, please email [email protected]. We really appreciate all of our volunteers. Thank you! DONATIONS Now accepting donations of lemons, soda, beer, wine and water.
