Rapportio di Presidente
Greetings from Club President
Tristain Roberts
Buon giorno!
As a member and committee member of CMI for more than 10 years, I am delighted to be back
in an active role following a year’s break. We’ve got some exciting times coming up for the
club. In early April next year there will be a contingent of Victorian AROCA members touring
the state to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 105 series Alfa Giulia. At this stage there are 26
cars confirmed and paid to come over on the ferry, out of 50 total spaces booked. Kim Briggs,
who has also recently rejoined the Commissione, is a member of both CMI and AROCA and
will continue to keep us up to date with details of the event.
Our club is also overdue for a birthday! Many of you would remember our 10th anniversary
celebrations in March 2005 which included a dinner, a special display in Hobart, and the
production of a commemorative CD of the club’s activities. I would like to see us belatedly
celebrate our 15th anniversary in March 2012, and conclude the celebrations with the AROCA
visit in April. Please feel free to provide the committee with suggestions for anniversary events
– or contact me directly.
Speaking of birthdays, anniversaries and milestones, next September will see the 10th running
of our Domain Hillclimb. I feel one of the highlights of the event just run was the increased
number of Italian cars participating. Douglas Blain and I shared his Fiat 2300S and Lamborghini Urraco P300, Geoff Storr was in Jake Hill’s old Alfetta GTV, Jake Hill was in Geoff’s old
Alfetta GTV, Alex Ransley took out 2 class wins in his GTV6, Graham Mitchell took out a
class win in his Fiat 128SL, Norman Henry brought along his Alfa Giulia Super, Phil Blake had
a ball in his Lancia Beta and David Mitchell’s Alfa 156 JTS served as zero car. That means Italians made up a quarter of the field – but I still don’t think that’s enough.
A challenge then for the 10th anniversary event – let’s make a target of at least 50% Italian cars
running in our own event. If you have an Italian car, enter it. If you don’t have one, buy one!
There are any number of club members who could help you out with a sub-$1000 Alfa or Fiat,
or you might even be able to borrow a car to run (if you’re on good terms with the owner of
course).
On that note, I bid you farewell – for now!
Ciao
Tristan

Club Captains Report
A lot of effort goes into our club events
and as Monty Reading explains; it is all
worth it!
persistent with most of the
morning runs being done in the
wet. Times were appropriate
given the conditions with the
AWD cars having a clear
advantage. Most cars stayed on
the black stuff and there was no
major car damage. The lunch
was supplied by Ken and
Barbie and was brilliant, even
the rain stayed away for most of
lunchtime.
Hi everybody this is my first
time as Club Captain and I am
looking forward to the challenge
of future events. I would like to
thank the outgoing Club Captain
Gary and Club Secretary,
Katherine for all their hard work
in organising the events that we
have all enjoyed this year.
The latest motorsport event run
by CMI was the Domain
Hillclimb for which a great time
was had by all who competed.
The day started at 7am for all
who helped with the mammoth
task required to set up for the
day; over 60 hay bales and over
a kilometre of bunting had to be
strung along the course, plus the
timing start tower and finish
beams needed to be put up and
tested. At the same time two
portable toilets were being
placed onsite and the catering
(Ken and Barbie) was set in
place all before the drivers
briefing at 8.30am !!
With the rain coming down the
first car was sent on its way just
after 9.00am. The rain was
6
As the afternoon runs set off the
rain returned with the first car, a
red RX7 running off the track
just after leaving the start line.
This caused a delay while the
car and a very embarrassed
driver were towed back onto the
road. The car suffered some
panel damage but it was still
able to continue in the event.
The timing tree then decided
that it did not want to work
which meant yet another delay
while yours truly drove down
from the top to repair and reset
it (a plug had come loose!!).
With all issues sorted out the
competition resumed and with
the rain now gone and the road
drying out nicely times began to
tumble with every run (even the
Red RX7 was quick, so it was
good to see that not to much
damage had occurred from its
little trip off the road).
guys!!) it was time for the
Awards presentation and
medals to be given to the
winners. With the night
drawing in it was off with the
trailer full of hay bales to drop
them back at Pelverata and
return the trailer to Fern Tree
on the way home, all making
for very long, but satisfying
day.
Like all our events, this one
could not have run without the
help of our volunteers who
lend their time, equipment and
vehicles to the event and help
to make for a successful day;
many thanks to all the hard
working individuals involved
in organising and running the
day.
We are always looking for
extra help so if anyone
reading this thinks that they
could be of assistance please
contact myself or any of the
other Committee members, we
will be glad to hear from you.
Ciao Monty

Italian News:
THE SCOOP
Ferrari 458 Spider:
This stunner is expected to arrive in Australia toward the end of 2012. Ferrari’s
latest rendition of the 458 an all new aluminium folding hardtop slips away in
just 14 seconds by sliding the singular roof panel neatly into the rear – WOW!
Power remains as standard and amazingly the new roof only adds 50kg to the
1380kg weight of the Italia coupe.
458 SPIDER Specs:
Engine: 4499cc 90° V8
Check out the cleverly engineered roof in action on YouTube:
Power: 425kW@9000rpm

Thirst: 11.8Ll/100 km (cycle)

Length: 4527mm
Width: 1937mm
Height: 1211mm
Wheelbase: 2650mm
Dry weight: 1430kg (with
forged alloys and race seats)
Weight distribution: 42/58
Fiat Panda:
The new Panda was recently shown at the
Frankfurt International Motor Show and
although we probably will not see it arrive in
Australia, the Panda has been an important
part of the Fiat line up in recent years. Bigger
and more comfortable than the current model,
the new Panda will offer both four-wheel
drive and Multi-Jet engine variants with
rumours suggesting it may underpin a new
smaller jeep.
Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradle:
The Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradle may be a bit
of a mouthful, but it is even more car. Featured on
the Maserati stand at the International Melbourne
Motor Show, this latest addition to the Maserati
range is basically a street legal Maserati race car.
Not only does it look fantastic, but it has the
performance to match sprinting to 100km/h in just
4.6 seconds and generates 331kw of power at
7000rpm and 510nm of torque at 4750rpm. The MC
Stradle is loaded with new technologies and like the
Kerbang (on next page) expresses Maserati’s desire
to expand and tap into new existing markets.

THE SCOOP
Alfa Romeo 4C:
BIG NEWS!! After the excitement caused by the 8C, at
long last its baby brother is set to come to Australia. The
4C was previewed at Frankfurt in a ‘fluid metallic’ paint
scheme and is set for production in 2013. Prices are yet to
be confirmed but expected around $60,000-$70,000
according to the importer Ateco. The 4C will feature Alfa
Romeo’s new Twin Clutch transmission coupled to a 1.8
turbo that produces 105kw. This should make for a very
quick and agile roadster given that it weighs a mere
850kg. As such the 4C will compete with the roadsters of
Lotus and Audi for performance but undercut them massively on price.
Maserati Kubang:
In a break with tradition,
Maserati is set to enter
new markets with its first
ever SUV revealed at
Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4
Super Trofeo Stradale:
Another Frankfurt reveal, the
new Gallardo is expected to be
the ‘most extreme’ Gallardo to
date. The hero colour for the new Gallardo is the traditional colour of
Frankfurt this month.
As we see more and more results from the Fiat-Chrysler take
over, this new Maserati will be built on a reworked version of
the platform underpinning the new Jeep Grand Cherokee and
Mercedes ML. Despite this, Maserati has explained that the
Kerbang will be unmistakably Maserati in style, performance,
handling, engine, suspension and brakes with these aspects
being developed in Maranallo and Modena. Maserati believes
no current SUV manufacturer delivers on the "uplifting
driving pleasure and luxury atmosphere” and intend to rectify
this with their V8 powered Cayenne/ML rival.
Italian race cars ‘Rosso Mars’ and in this
instance red really does go faster. The
Trofeo Stradale weights 70kg less than
the regular LP570-4 and produces 419kw
at 8000rpm and a maximum 540mn at
6500rpm. A giant carbon-fibre rear
spoiler, removable composite engine
cover and the front air intakes are painted
matt black, visually distinguishing the
car and complimenting the special gloss
black 19” wheels.

NEW COMMISSIONE:
The new committee has been elected so lets get to know a bit about them:
"ame: Tristan Roberts
CMI Position: Presidente (President)
The Cars:
Alfa Romeo Alfetta V6, Fiat 850 Sport Coupe (x2), Fiat 2300S (Doug
Blain’s), Lamborghini Urraco P300 (Doug Blain’s), Humber Super

Profession: IT Consultant
Interests Outside of Cars:
3rd Officer at Taroona Fire Brigade. Also enjoy mountain biking and mucking around at the farm. A bit of
Xbox from time to time doesn’t go astray either.
In a "ut Shell:
I am passionate about Italian cars and oddly enough I love to work on them almost as much as driving
them. Probably my favourite Italian car driving experience to date is a 1959 Maserati 3500GT (grunt, song
and style), and the Fiat 2300S is remarkably similar. I managed to be in Milan for the 100th anniversary of
Alfa Romeo last year with my wife Emily, and our baby son Jasper (who was wearing a CMI jumpsuit for
the occasion). I am pleased to be able to serve on the Commisione, and indeed as your Presidente, once
again following a year’s break from club duties.

Skiing, Real Tennis (the original game of tennis), cycling, surfing (really
crap at it!), bushwalking, cooking/food, wine, music, writing/reading,
and of course my cats (have five!!) who mean the world to us.
In a "ut Shell:
Am a confirmed Alfaholic and Italian car enthusiast. I was indoctrinated at a young age by my brother, but
never took up collecting to his level! I have only ever owned Alfas and Fiats - plenty of them. I enjoy
working on my cars, but need a proper garage, time and money. All of the necessary cash and time these
days is spent working on the country property, but that is fun too.

running, cycling, gym, adventure sports etc
In a "ut Shell:
A car nut through and through, I like to tinker, play, talk and write about cars. I basically grew up in Tas
and love being active outdoors. I have a goldfish called Frankie, will graduate this year, and I am excited to
be further involved with the club on the committee and as your Editor.

Interests Outside of Cars: Netball, Orienteering, Rallying (oops that’s cars)
In a "ut Shell:
When I’m not working, I keep myself busy playing netball on 2 teams, rallying at every opportunity (both
on tarmac and gravel), recently also took up orienteering for some extra fun and fitness. I have a cat called
Frisbee, who I recently adopted from the cat’s home. One day I hope to have my own rally car to race.

have plans),’84 Alfasud Sprint 1.5 (was daily driver but now unregistered –

Interests Outside of Cars: Playing music (mostly drums), keeping my 5 year old and 3 year old boys occupied and amused.
In a "ut Shell: Love the Italian cars. All Alfa’s at the moment, had a few fiats in the past and enjoyed
them too. Enjoying having a reliable daily driver and a project to work on when the mood takes me (not
often at the moment, but that will change), Dream Italian car: Maserati Shamal (don't know why - it just

(home renovations), electronics - basically I just like to know how things work! I also enjoy movies,
theatre shows, good food and wine, baristing, and spending time with family and friends.
In a "ut Shell:
This section is appropriate as some people think I must be nuts to take on the role of Club Capitano… and I
will have to come out of my shell (comfort zone) but look forward to the challenge. I hope that we all enjoy
the events (both motorsport and social) that are in the planning for next year.

Past Events: Social
“Mugga’s Folly to Brockley Estate”
David Mitchell details
the recent ‘Economy
Run’ social event held
by CMI:
There is a thing about holding
cryptic rally’s in CMI, for they
usually involve instructions, two
people in a car, and the risk of
the occupants not fully
understanding or appreciating
the level of effort that has gone
into planning a devious route
and/or the likelihood of some
heated exchanges when lost.
Such was the situation, I suspect
for some of us at this most
recent example of a club social
event.
However, let me backtrack a
little. Club stalwart Tristan
Roberts has an uncle, who just
happens to be Douglas Blain, a
long time motoring rotter. Now
for those of you not old enough
to know of the esteemed Doug
Blain or the magazine’s he has
been involved in, (such as CAR)
his name might not mean much
to you; but for those who might
be in the knowledge please bear
with me.
A potted history: Car Magazine
was launched in the UK as
Small Car and Mini Owner
magazine and was later renamed as CAR in 1966. During
20
the 1970’s and ‘80s CAR had
become one of the most
respected car magazines in the
world. CAR had a huge range of
well known people writing for
it including; Rowan Atkinson,
James May, Alexei Sayle, LJK
Setwright etc. Doug was Editor
for the years between’63-68 and
a range of other Australian’s
also edited the publication over
time. Some names included Ian
Fraser, Mel Nichols, and Steve
Cropley (all of whom
previously had held roles with
Aus motoring magazines such
as Sportscar World (now long
gone), Wheels, etc.
So, in view of Doug’s extensive
experience as a motoring writer/
editor, it should come as no
surprise that he has a life long
passion for classic cars (and of
these mostly Italian). If I have
any of this wrong Tristan can
advise otherwise. However, I
am sure most of you will have
seen his cars that he has out here
in Tassie; the 3.0 Lamborghini
Urruco and the ultra rare red Fiat
2300 coupe. Just so you know,
he also has a collection of other
highly desirable Italian’s in his
garage in the UK, including a
60’s Lamborghini and a Maserati
etc.
Now to the second bit of trivia as
it all brings the picture nicely
together. Doug also happens to
have a passion for rescuing old
buildings both in Tassie (our
economy run destination) and in
the UK and Europe. For those of
you who have talked with Doug
or came on the run, you would
realise he is a man of
considerable taste with a
commitment to restoring things
properly.
Now that our social run is
contextualised, let me shed some
light on our superb day. It was a
glorious late Winter’s morning
with sunshine, blue skies and

just a very slight chill in the air.
Perfect for what Mugga had in
mind for us. We met at Retro
Cafe around 9.30ish, various
club members and others
arriving, in time for a quick chat,
coffee, and discussion regarding
the trip route, as well as the
much needed swapping of
emergency mobile numbers…
just in case some of us got lost!
The variety of cars for this event
was a perfect blend of classic
and new, but best of all mostly
Italian. Chris Edwards and his
wife in their blue Ferrari 365
GTC, Tristan in the Urruco, Matt
Harding in the Fiat 2300 coupe,
myself and Patricia in the 156
sportwagon, Mugga in the 128,
Kim and Mary in the Alfa 75,
the Madigans in the black Alfa
147, Nicole in her Alfa sprint,
Norm in the Swedish Armoured
vehicle (Volvo wagon) and a
Navy 90 (whose pilots names
escape me!) were all in
attendance.
The first stop of the day was the
BP on the Brooker highway for
a fill of the tank, and a zeroing
of the speedo (for those who
read instructions that could
have been useful!) From there
it was off and up the Brooker
looking out for the various
clues, over the Bowen Bridge
and up and over Grass Tree hill
into Richmond. Funnily
enough, (at least for us… but I
suspect a few other crews), this
is where Mugga’s instructions/
clues went slightly off.
After a quick phone call to said
Rescue Car (Mugga) and a
circular conversation we soon
realised we needed to head out
towards Campania, and
thereafter Colebrook. From
there it was via small country
backroads (on routes I had
never previously travelled), to
places such as Tunnack, Baden,
Whitford, and Woodsdale.
Now it was either at this
location or the next one
(Levendale) where it was
possible to turn left to go to
Buckland. However, somehow
we ended up following Mugga’s
instructions and went right,
taking us all the way to
Runnymede on the East Coast
Highway before we could
eventually turn left to head
towards Buckland.
For some strange reason, which
I can’t fathom, Mugga either has
trouble in knowing his right
from his left, or perhaps the
roads changed between his
planning of the route and the
running of the event (read,
improbable). Perhaps we just
got it wrong? (hmm I’m not so
sure!). Anyway, eventually all
of us arrived at Brockley
Estate… well that is apart from
Chris Edwards and wife in the
Ferrari who somehow managed
to get even more lost than
Patricia and I did. But even
they too found their way finally
to the end point. Needless to
say some comments were heard
to the effect that Mugga should
be a worthy recipient of the
Duck Award for the year for his
cartographic inadequacies, but
of course he refuted such
claims.
Thereafter, we all settled into a
fine BBQ lunch, drinks,
relaxation and tours of the house
with Tristan’s brother Julian and
his partner Chaxi, who are
managing the property.
For CMI member’s information,
Brockley Estate is being run as a

this run, I would certainly

Now just for the record
needless to say Mugga came in
first with a calculated fuel
usage of 5.5 L/100km for the
trip. I can’t recall who came
second but do know we came in
third at 8.8L/100km, and I do
recall that Tristan in the
Lamborghini came 2nd last with
Chris and his wife in the Ferrari

consumption isn’t high on the

January 20th-22nd
The Fiat Nationals are open to
all Fiat Club members, CMI,
ICE, AROCA, Lancia, clubs
etc. While the Motorkhanna is
for Fiats only, the Sprints and
show and shine is open to any
Italian car. The main trophy between Fiat Clubs which will be
presented is the Fiat of Italy
Cup.
The basic plan is for drivers to
travel up in a loose convoy from
Melbourne on the Friday afternoon, to enable entries to be
checked, and a meet/greet at
Winton Raceway with free nibbles. People have the option of
going up earlier for practice as
the track will be available all day
on Friday. It is a 20 min drive
from Winton to Benella where
people will be staying.
On Saturday morning, scrutineering will occur first, drivers
briefing, with the motorkhana
thereafter. It is on grass and it is
expected that drivers will attempt 6 out 10 possible courses.
At the end of the day, people
return to Benella, for the show

lake, with a BBQ thereafter. The
organisers are expecting a lot of

weather is poor.
Sunday morning, scrutineering
if needed, drivers briefing and
thereafter sprints. The organisers will attempt to keep fast cars
separated from slower cars.
Timing will be for individual
cars (bit like a hillclimb), however, expect possibly 20 cars on
the track at once. Passing will
be allowed but drivers need to
be mindful of others on the
track when doing so. Expect
cars to be around 2-3 secs
apart. A reasonable time for

Amazing Alfa!
Hi CMI Members,
I'm currently working in
Trollhattan, Sweden, for Saab
Automobile and one of the local
summer traditions is to gather at
the locks on the Gota Alv river
and stare at the amazing cars
owned by some of the locals.
Feature Letter:
Stephen Wade is currently
working overseas in
Sweden and has written
to us to share a rather
special Alfa Romeo:
Every Wednesday night, the
enthusiasts open their garages
and drive down to the locks and
the locals gather to enjoy an ice
cream, mingle and of course,
appreciate the cars.
I was down there last
Wednesday with my wife and
we were about the leave the
gathering when a glimpse of red
caught my eye up on a hill that
we hadn't walked past earlier.
Needless to say, I couldn't
believe my eyes when I finally
got close to one of these babies!
The best part about it is that the
owner is an engineer at Saab!
I'm going to have to spend a
little more time around his
section, I think, and see if I can
get a ride one day :-)
