Dear Parents and Community Members
Illness Within Our School and
Neighbouring Schools
Over the past week, some of our students and their families have been
struck down with gastro like symptoms and the numbers affected are
increasing.
You may have heard that this tummy bug has hit Pinnaroo and Lameroo hard and may
now be within our community. If there are any signs of an upset tummy within your
family, please keep your children home.
Our guidelines inform us that the “infectious period is during illness and for 24 hours after
the symptoms have disappeared”. We ask that people honour this for the safety and wellbeing of all. One of the greatest defences we have against this bug is rigorous hand
washing. Please have this conversation with your children.
Royal Adelaide Show
Once again it is show time and our Year 9 to 12 Ag students are only a day
or 2 away from stepping into the ring with their steers, sheep and goats. All
of the students and Mrs Johnson have been working extremely hard for the
past 4 months to ensure the animals are healthy, at weight and ready
to lead. Although there are the usual stubborn goats and sheep that
make life difficult for their handlers, the students have been very
patient and calm when dealing with the animals. Although to a certain
extent the perceived success of the school’s Agriculture Show Program
comes with the results at the show this week it must be highlighted that
the learning that takes place in the lead up and during the show is what
really makes the program a success. Students gain an incredible amount of
knowledge and skills in animal husbandry, leadership, team work and
communication. I wish all of the students the best on Wednesday and
Thursday and I hope all of your
hard work and learning is rewarded.

Reception/Year One Update

The highlights of last week were making Peek Boxes during Science
which also became a Visual Arts lesson. The children had to either
choose a theme or decorate the inside of a shoebox using a variety of
materials available to them. They had to experiment with how to
position their items etc. inside the box to be most effectively seen using
the light from a hole cut into the top of the box and by looking through
a peeking hole at the end of their box. They also used cellophane to
produce another light effect for their end product. This week we will
finish and share their peek boxes. We are almost at the conclusion of
our Look and Listen unit of work.
On Thursday we celebrated the induction of our SRC leaders and class SRC leaders as well as Book
week with a whole school assembly. It was great to see so many students and adults dress up and a
lot of relatives and community members present at the assembly. Congratulations to Jessica
Rampling for winning the Reception Book Week Competition and to Lucas Porker for winning the Year
One section.
This week we will have Mr Vanson teaching in place of Miss Boughen as she
undertakes some work for Merino SA during the 2016 World Merino Insight Week
hosted by Merino SA, assists the school show team and also takes leave to be
involved with our family’s sheep showing commitments at the Adelaide Show later
in the week.
School Fees
Payment for Materials and Services Charge for school fees are overdue. Monthly
statements have been sent as a reminder. Please contact the school by the end of
the week for a payment by instalment form. The school will proceed in accordance
with our Debt Recovery Procedures in an endeavour to collect all Materials and
Services Charges. The school will proceed with Debt Collection if necessary.

are having difficulties in making payment.

Children’s Book Week
Last week we celebrated Children’s Book Week which ended with a dress-up day and
assembly on Thursday. It was wonderful to see so many children (and a few staff) dressed up –
there were many interesting costumes including a 26-storey treehouse, a purple sheep and Mr
Magee. It was also fantastic to have so many parents and friends at the assembly. Following
the SRC induction, each class from Preschool to Year 7/8 presented an item.
The winners of the Book Week competitions were announced and each winner received a
book prize.

Book Fair
Over the past two weeks I have held an Ashton
Scholastic book fair in the Library, in conjunction with
BOOK WEEK. I would like to thank everyone for their
support of the Fair and would like to announce that we
sold a record $1200 worth of books, posters and novelty
items. This allowed me to pick books for the Library to
the value of $350.

This Thursday is R U OK Day. R U OK? Day is a timely reminder
to check in on your friends and family, but it is also a reminder
to regularly and meaningfully ask your friends and family “are
you ok?”
It can sometimes bring comfort in knowing that someone is
there to listen and give support when times are tough. That
may be enough to turn their day around. It is also important to realise that it is OK to
say you’re not OK. We all can’t be great all the time. Some tips or steps to help the
conversation are:

Children who are overweight or obese are at risk of serious health conditions, such as asthma,
cardiovascular conditions and type 2 diabetes (Australian Government, 2016).
Consuming too much sugar can result in bad health and diseases and that is why it is not that
good for you. Two of the most common diseases from too much sugar in a diet are diabetes
and obesity.
Diabetes – Diabetes is a major health risk that you can get when you consume too much
sugar. When someone has diabetes it means that they can’t maintain healthy levels of
glucose (sugar) in the blood and can only consume a certain amount of sugar. There are
two different type of diabetes: diabetes 1 and diabetes 2. Depends on what diabetes
you have, you have to inject yourself with insulin. (Diabetesaustralia, 2016).
Obesity – Obesity is another major health risk. It is a condition where you have eaten
too much food and not maintained your health which resulted in being extremely overweight. Obesity can make you very sick and lead to many health problems such as: high
blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart diseases, cancer and stroke
(obesityaction, 2016). Being obese can make it harder to breathe and sleep. It can make
a person feel tired and cause aches or pains (kidshealth, 2016).
The sugar free recipe I will be making is Healthy Chocolate Chip Cookies. The cost will be
around $20 and the ingredients are available locally for any families or people that would like
to make these cookies. I think these cookies are a good idea because everyone loves cookies
and they’re popular yet healthy. They are also appetizing which is a big bonus, plus they’re a
good snack to have for school lunch boxes.

Healthy Chocolate
Chip Cookies










2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 large egg
4 tablespoons dark brown sugar, lightly packed
1/2 cup coconut oil
1 and 1/2 cups oat flour (regular oats blended)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Pinch of salt
1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
Optional: coarse sea salt
Method:

Take regular old fashioned oats or quick oats and blend them until they resemble a
flour or powder in a blender or food processor.
Combine the vanilla extract, large egg, and brown sugar in a bowl. Melt the
coconut oil and let it cool slightly before adding to the bowl. Beat everything
together until just combined.
Stir in the oat flour (measured after blending NOT before), baking soda, cinnamon
(scale this amount to taste preferences), and salt.
Stir until just combined and then fold in the dark chocolate chips.
Chill the dough for at least one hour.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Using a cookie scoop (and pack these in the scoop very tightly or they may
crumble), scoop out balls of the dough onto a parchment lined cookie sheet. Press a
few more chocolate chips in the tops if desired.
Bake for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned around the edges.
