Bringing the magic
back to Mays Field/
Newcomb Stadium
Lopes end
season with
CIF Quarter
Finals Game
The Original Mays Field was built in
1946, ushering in the start of a long
history of lope memories. In 2007 the
decision was made to tear down the
old stadium and build a new allmetal venue. The new stadium was
bigger and stronger but because AV
was sharing it with the new Eastside
High School, no graphics could be
added to it.
Flash forward to 2015. Eastside HS
now has its own stadium. While the
AV field has been laid with artificial
turf and an artificial track, the back of
the stadium remains empty. The
school is seeking professional painter
volunteers to help support this project. Contact Jennifer Nieves at AVHS.

Pioneer Event Center in Lancaster SATURDAY OCT 10, 2015
This past October, the class of
1970 came together for an inspiring
45th reunion. The class had a nice
turnout and the event ran for a full
weekend. Historically, 1970 included
the Apollo 13 Mission and the Vietnam War. Richard Nixon was president and Ronald Reagan was the
Governor of California. In pop culture the most popular movie was
“Love Story” with Ryan O’Neal and
Ali McGraw and the number one
song of the year was Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Waters.” Crosby, Stills, Nash and
Young’s “Déjà Vu” was playing on
almost everyone’s 8-track player.
At AVHS the principal was Monroe
Peterson who was principal from
1962 to 1973. Largely through the
[“HOF”, From page 1]
class of 1970’s efforts, the AV dress
code was basically dropped after
members from the class of 1970
(from all AV high schools) helped
sway the district to a more relaxed
dress code policy which among other
things allowed girls to wear pants to
school. Another highlight of that
year was the rock band, Eric Burdon
and War, which performed in the
boy’s gym.
On Friday night, October 9th, a
special get together was held at the
M0AH, (Lancaster Museum of Art
and History), and was organized by
Theresa (Chappell) Honeycutt. A
local street taco caterer prepared a
great Mexican meal for the almost
90 people in attendance. The
alumni were able to enjoy a beautiful sunset and perfect
weather on the rooftop
event area. Early Saturday Georgia
(Coye) Lowder helped arrange a Ladies Tea and boutique which was
held at the Methodist Church in Lancaster. Various teas from around the
world and tea sandwiches and treats
were prepared by Camille’s Café.
There were a number of beautiful
basket silent auction items, prepared
by class member Susie Yslas. It was
attended by over 35 people. Later,
the class met for a private casual
social gathering at Kinetic Brewery
on Lancaster Blvd. During that
event, brewery tours were given by
Kinetic staff members.
The main reunion dinner and gala
was organized by Sharon Hunsaker
and Georgia (Coye) Lowder and held
in the Pioneer Event Center and was
attended by over 100 people who
