On behalf of the PSWC Board, I would like to congratulate each of the wonderful artists selected for this year’s exhibit at the Art Museum of Los Gatos in Los Gatos California. Our three Jurors of Selection: Kim Lordier, PSWC-DP, PSA, Dan Petersen, and Duane Wakeham, PSWC-PL, PSA had to make difficult choices from 477 images submitted by 182 artists. Thanks to these jurors for their time and care in selecting this beautiful show. My appreciation extends as well to our Juror of Awards, Richard McKinley PSWC-DP, PSA, NPS from Oregon, for his excellent selection of paintings which received special recognition. I would also like to thank Catherine Politopoulos, Meg Nelson and the staff of the Museum of Los Gatos for providing their excellent museum for our exhibit as well as their support, cooperation and help. We are truly fortunate to be able to display these wonderful pastel paintings here. Making all this possible as well, are our very generous sponsors and donors, who through their support, help promote the pastel medium and art appreciation in general. As the President of PSWC, I would like to also thank the PSWC Board Members, all volunteers, who helped all along the way to make this exhibit such a success. Special thanks to Jerry Boyd, who put in many hours and extra care both as show chair and shipping agent; Maria Sylvester, who designed this beautiful catalog, the prospectus and call for entries cards; and Linda Roemisch, who was responsible for contacting and procuring all of our contributions for awards. Sincerely Tina Moore, President & Awards Chair From the President of The Pastel Society of the West Coast about Pastel Venice at Sunset James Abbott McNeill Whistler Pastel Sara with Her Dog Mary Cassatt Pastel New England Landscape John Appleton Brown Pastel Self Portrait Maurice Quentin de laTour Pastel Woman in Grean Pablo Picasso Pastel Pastel is not colored chalk. Pastel is pure pigment– the same pigment used in making all fine art paints. It is the most permanent of all media when applied to a permanent ground and properly framed. There is no oil to cause darkening or cracking, nor other substance or medium to cause fading or blistering. Pastels from the 16th Century exist today, as fresh and alive as the day they were painted! The following is a statement from the Pastel Society of America in New York: Pastel does not refer to pale colors, as the word is commonly used in cosmetic and fashion terminology. The name Pastel comes from the French word “pastische” because the pure, powdered pigment is ground into a paste, with a small amount of gum binder, and then rolled into sticks. The infinite variety of colors in the Pastel palette range from soft and subtle to bold and brilliant. An artwork is created by stroking the sticks of dry pigment across an abrasive ground, embedding the color in the “tooth” of the paper, sandboard or canvas. If the ground is completely covered with Pastel, the work is considered a Pastel painting; leaving much of the ground exposed produces a Pastel sketch. Techniques vary with individual artists. Pastel can be blended or used with visible strokes. The medium is favored by many artists because it allows a spontaneous approach. There is no drying time, and no allowances to be made for a change in color due to drying. Historically, Pastel can be traced back to the 16th century. Its invention is attributed to the German painter Johann Thiele. A Venetian woman artist, Rosalba Carriera was the first to make consistent use of Pastel. Chardin did portraits with an open stroke, while LaTour preferred the blended finish. Thereafter a galaxy of famous artists...Watteau, Copley, Delacroix, Millet, Manet, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Vuillard, Bonnard, Glackens, Whistler, Thomas Wilmer Dewing,William Merritt Chase... just to list the more familiar names, used Pastel as finished work rather than preliminary sketches. Edgar Degas was the most prolific user of Pastel, and its champion. His protege, Mary Cassatt, introduced the Impressionists and Pastel to her friends in Philadelphia and Washington, and thus to the United States. In 1983, Sotheby Parke Bernet sold at auction two Degas Pastels for more than $3,000,000 each. Both Pastels were painted about 1880. Today, Pastel paintings have the stature of oil and watercolor as a major fine art medium Many of our most renowned living artists have distinguished themselves in Pastel, and enriched the art world with this beautiful medium. As with any fine work of art or fine furniture, it is advised not to place a Pastel painting in direct sunlight. When under glass, the sun’s heat can create humidity which could cause moisture damage to develop. Whenever transported or not in a hanging position a Pastel painting should always be placed face up. Richard McKinley, PSA, PSWC-DP, NPS has been a professional artist for 38 years and has over 35 years of teaching experience. He is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and Northwest Pastel Society; Signature Distinguished Pastelist with the Pastel Society of the West Coast and a member of the Oil Painters of America. On September 26, 2010, he will be the Hall of Fame Honoree for the Pastel Society of America, held at the National Arts Club in Manhattan, NY. He is a frequent contributing editor for the Pastel Journal Magazine. His work has been included in several books, including: “A Painters Guide to Design and Composition”, by Margot Schulzke; “Painting with Pastels”, by Maggie Price; and “Pure Color, The Best of Pastel”, edited by Maureen Bloomfield and James A. Markle. Richard is currently working on a book that compiles years of his published Pastel-Pointers columns and blogs. All are North Light publications. An avid plein air painter, Richard divides his time between painting the locations he is passionate about, reinterpreting those paintings back in the studio, and instructing workshops. For more information about Richard, visit the Pastel-Pointers blog for the Pastel Journal. Juror of Awards Jury of Selection Kim Lordier, PSA, PSWC-DP is an Artist Member of the California Art Club, a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and a Distinguished Pastelist of the Pastel Society of the West Coast. Her work has been awarded the Grand Prize Award in 2007 for the Pastel Journal’s Pastels 100, and the Best of Show award for the 2007 PSWC’s Pastels USA. Kim’s pastel paintings have gained national attention, and has been featured in American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur, The Pastel Journal, American Artist and Southwest Art. She is represented by Knowlton Gallery in Lodi CA, Rieser Fine Art in Carmel CA, Sekula’s Fine Art and Antiques in Sacramento CA, and Debra Huse Gallery on Balboa Island CA. He attended Meinzinger Art School in Detroit before serving a four-year enlistment in the Navy, which took him to Japan and Hawaii. He earned degrees in painting from Michigan State University and Stanford University. Following two years of travel and painting in Europe in the early 60s, Duane taught drawing and painting at Stanford University, and art history and oil painting at College of San Mateo for 21 years before taking early retirement in 1986. The first Pastels USA National Open competition was held in 1986. Based in the Sacramento region of California, PSWC has become the second largest pastel society in the United States, with members coast to coast. Each year Pastels USA, our International Open Show attracts almost 500 entries. They come from all over North America and as far away as Africa, Turkey and Europe. Awards given amount to over $11,000 each year. Jurors for this prestigious show include artists of the stature of Daniel Greene, Albert Handell, Doug Dawson, Sally Strand, Duane Wakeham and Margot Schulzke. The exhibition draws over a thousand art patrons each year. PSWC is honored to be at the prestigious Art Museum of Los Gatos this year. Past venues for Pastels USA include the Triton Museum in Santa Clara, CA, the Haggin Museum in Stockton, CA and the San Luis Obispo Art Center. Because of PSWC’s reputation, some of the best pastelists in the country are signature members. Signature Status is awarded for acceptance into three Pastels USA Exhibitions or two Pastels USA Exhibits and one award in the PSWC Membership Show. The Distinguished Pastelist rank is awarded to members who receive awards in three Open Shows in a five year period. The Pastel LaureateTM Hall of Fame designation for lifetime achievement in the medium has been awarded thus far to Albert Handell, Daniel Greene, Bob Gerbracht, Margot Schulzke, Marbo Barnard and Duane Wakeham. The current PSWC Board of Directors is dedicated to continuing the momentum started 23 years ago. Besides sponsoring two exhibitions a year, The Pastel Society of the West Coast holds two membership meetings a year featuring demonstrations by accomplished pastelists. We publish a newsletter three times a year providing the latest information on pastel technique, exhibition opportunities and member accomplishments. PSWC also sponsors a scholarship competition each year for high school graduates who will be majoring in art. Given the strong leadership PSWC has enjoyed in its first two decades, we are confident that this society will be around for many years to come. Membership in The Pastel Society of the West Coast is open to all artists working in the historic pastel medium. Information about PSWC including how to become a member can be found on our web site www.pswc.ws
