FROM THE PRESIDENT
On behalf of the Board and Club staff I wish all members a healthy,
happy and successful 2016!
The Club has started the year on a very positive note. Our new
caterer, Bern the Chef, has commenced operation, with the first meal
served to Lane Cove Rotary Club on the 12th of January, followed by
the weekly Jazz/Dinner on Friday 15 January. Feedback from
members has been excellent.
Well done Bern and your team for transforming the kitchen and
bringing us fresh, creative and delicious food. Like any new business
“Hayworth” is in a soft opening period with menu and services being
fine-tuned each week. Please see article below from Bern.
This transformation would not have
been possible without the fantastic effort of our members who pitched in to
assist Bern and her team to transform the kitchen, remove old and broken
equipment, arrange purchase of a new commercial fridge and other
equipment, and fix things, paint, clean and many other tasks.
Special thanks are due to: Hamish Anderson, Steve Barnes, Carolyn Biggs,
Richard Biggs, Ian Butters, Monica Cowper, Edie Downs, Maureen Dunn,
Rosemary Hurford, Buddy Hyde (and son), Sue Kallas, Jan Sadler, Ralph
Sadler, Robyn Seale, Graham Webster and Joan Weine.
Ian Butters and his refurbishment committee have been hard at work through 2015 improving our
Clubhouse with the funds from the NSW Government grant we received last year. The final stage of that
programme is now underway with improvements to our interior and exterior lighting. This work should
be completed within two months.
The first of our special events for the year was held on Tuesday 26 January, Australia Day. The 9 hole
mixed event had an almost full field, the weather whilst promising to be wet was great, the Clubhouse
looked terrific and a delicious lamb lunch was enjoyed by all the players and guests.
At the presentation we remembered our much-loved friend and member Harold (Keg) Kallas who passed
away on Australia Day eleven years ago. Joan Weine and Bob Virgili won the Keg Cup trophy. Please
see a roundup of the day from Sue Kallas in this edition of Links.
Many people helped make this day a great success, in particular Sue Kallas, Richard and Carolyn Biggs,
Joan Weine, Helen Prentice, Bill Edmondson, Robyn Seale, Lorraine Carnemolla and Mark in the Pro
Shop. Special thanks to Dave Martin for doing the cooking. Thank you all and for all the members and
guests for helping to make this a very special day.
With our new caterer on board the Club, is planning to hold more special day events. The first of these is,
as you can see from page one, is on Sunday 14 February, Valentine’s Day. Bern has put together a special
3-course dinner menu, from 6pm to 10pm at $80 per couple or $40 single. Entertainment will be provided
by the very talented Larissa McKay from 6 to 9 pm. Bookings are essential. Please see full details below.
Happy golfing, dining and socialising!

Hello Members
Thanks so much for all the positive thoughts and comments. Your lovely remarks about how much we
have changed your club is very positive, so we are
feeling confident, even though it’s still early days,
and there’s a little more to do.
Still again we are awaiting our phone line, but we
do have an email address;
[email protected]
Thank you to Robyn Glover, the Ladies Golf
Captain, for being our first email. We can take your
bookings here as well as answer any questions you
may have.
If you are a Friday Nighter at Jazz, you’ll know we
are still refining the menu. So, to make sure the kitchen is not overloaded, there are now share platters
available on the night; three specials – a Mediterranean style, an Asian style, and cheese & fruit. Perfect
for grazing during the fabulous music from Billy & the Quartet. A smaller offering of our usual menu will
still be available, bear with us. We don’t want to make you wait for meals, so here’s hoping this week
makes a breakthrough here.
Valentine’s Day Dinner is booking steady, there’s a fantastic musician booked for the night, Larrisa
McKay www.larissamckay.com.au if you want to check her out.
Last week, Caleb, our magnificent Kitchen Hand won employee of the week for arriving in that torrential
rain dripping wet, and worked the whole night no complaints – incredible! Let’s hope his bike dries out
well.
Cheers, Bernadette & the Team at Hayworth”

FROM THE BOARD
Lane Cove Council:
The Club has received our new 5-year lease, which has been
reviewed by the Board and our Council sub-committee. There is
one matter outstanding, and we have requested a meeting with
Council to resolve this issue before the lease can be signed.
Other issues still outstanding with Council:
- Tree trimming on the course
- River Road Signage
- Approval for limited number of Member-owned motorized golf carts
- Management Agreement Lane Cove Golf Course
- Weekday membership
Other matters:
*
Consent has been received to the amendment of the Club‘s Constitution at the 2015 AGM.
*
The two damaged panels on our solar-electric collectors on the Clubhouse roof have been replaced
under our insurance.
*
Work will commence this month on a new Lane Cove Golf Club logo, progressive introduction of
the new name and finalisation of our new website and social media strategy.
*
40 new chairs (similar to the auditorium chairs) have been received for the restaurant, purchased
from our NSW Government Community Grant.
*
The annual Charity Pro Am date of Wednesday 21 September 2016 has now been approved by
PGA Australia.
BLUNTS PLAYER OF THE MONTH
You will notice the new name and logo, as they
are no longer called Century 21 Blunts.
The principals, Michelle Bartlett and Mark
Dainton, have decided to return to the company's
roots and rebrand the business, as it was known
for many years, that is, Blunts of Lane Cove.
Blunts have a long and proud history of real estate
within the Lane Cove area and Michelle and Mark are happy to continue to assist our Club with their
much valued sponsorship.
Good news for us is that they have agreed to extend their sponsorship until June 2016. That means this
sponsorship has now moved into its 9th year and is the longest running sponsorship in our Club.
While we have been enjoying the Christmas New Year period, we had two Blunts Player of the Month
awards run and won.
For the men, Ben Pearson put two good rounds together to win the December award with a total of nett
124 for 2 medal rounds.
For the ladies, Angela Charters also put two good rounds together to win the January award with a
total of 37 points after rounds of 21 and 16. Congratulations to Angela and Ben.

CAPTAIN’S CORNER
Hi to all members, both ladies and gentlemen,
This month I wish to discuss ‘Point of Entry’ for a ball entering a ‘lateral water hazard’.
I find the 1st/10th hole the most abused example of not playing from ‘point of entry’, as per the following
example:
A player hits from the 1st/10th tee and the ball
immediately/eventually goes left into the hazard
(which is a lateral hazard defined by red pegs).
The ball then ricochets amongst the trees and
comes to rest 100 yards off the tee but 2 feet
within the hazard. The ball is unplayable within
the hazard, so the player drops a ball within 2
club lengths of this point and continues on.
In this instance, the point of entry to the hazard
was 20 yards from the tee and the player should
have gone back to that point (or the tee) to play
his/her next shot. Remember also that when you
drop a ball it is to be WITHIN 2 club lengths.
Please remember also that playing partners should pay attention to each other’s shots so that it can be
agreed as to where the ball last crossed the hazard line.
Happy golfing, and may the course be with you.
CAPTAIN JOHN

MEN’S GOLF
Welcome to another year of Links. I'm hoping
you all had a great Christmas and New Year.
The New Year has begun with the first of the
major titles being played with the Gold Medal
being won by Ben Pearson. Benny, being a
member of the Club for over three years now,
has embraced the culture of our great Club.
Starting off as a 19 handicapper, he has come
down to a solid single figure marker of 8.
Benny won two medals last year and has
started 2016 with back to back medals. Scoring
a nett 61, he beat Wayne Belgre and Pete
Doherty by a shot to claim his Gold Medal
victory.
Fraser Taylor was lamenting not winning a medal last year as he would have won the Gold Medal in a
canter with a nett 57, easily winning everything in B grade. Mike Meade took out the C grade medal with
ease, to put him in the running for next year’s Gold medal.
The Australia Day 'Keg Cup', in memory of the late Harold Kallas, was played with a capacity field and a
great day was had by all. If you haven't played on Oz day, make sure you get in early next year!
A notable score has to be mentioned goes to Hamish Anderson who had 44 points last week. Wouldn't
like to come across that form in the Singles Knockout in the early rounds!
The rest of us have a great year ahead to look forward to. The Singles Knockout has just begun, followed
by the 4 Ball, Foursomes, Warren and Gibson Trophy (we are going all the way this year- no excuses!!),
and the ultimate, the Club Championships. Make sure you are a part of it!
Can't wait to enjoy it all with you. See you out there,
EVAN JONES

WOMEN’S GOLF
Summer Cup
We're nearing the end of our summer season of golf, with the last rounds to be played on Thursday 18th
and Sunday 14th February. There have been some frighteningly good scores, so it will be interesting to
see who has the best aggregate of three rounds.
Blunts Player of the Month
Congratulations to first time winner, Angela Charters, who won this award for her scores in December
and January. Angela's been working on her game, so watch this space for future wins!
Australia Day
Someone "up there" cleared the rainy skies so that 40 golfers could enjoy 9 holes of golf for the Keg Cup.
Mark, and the folk in the Pro Shop did a great job of arranging the markers for the game.
The winners were Rob Virgili who won a slab of VB, with an impressive 24 points, and Joan Weine,
with 17 points who was thrilled to win a bottle of Moët. Runners-up were (Bad) John Stevenson and
Jacqui Brooks, who both took away wine and golf balls.
Some complicated maths gave us the " Mystery 4 Ball" winners of Rob ("Had-a-great-day") Virgili,
John Stevenson, Ben Pearson and Dave McFarlane. NTPs were won by Helen Prentice, Hamish
Anderson (twice) and Joan (“Had-a-great-day")
Weine.
Anthony Powter and Sue Kallas won long drives.
Robyn Glover and Margot Anderson's brother
Michael, won slabs of chocolates for " Best
Dressed". Then balls were awarded randomly.
Part of the monies raised for the club on this day
was collected in raffle ticket sales. Carolyn and
Richard Biggs arranged the prizes of lamb dinners
for the raffle as well as making the clubhouse a sea
of red white and blue by decking the place with
many Oz flags. Derek Moore and Dave Leckie were the lucky winners of the dinners. (Almost poetic!);
Mary Smith won a huge bottle of wine (donated by Robyn Seale). Joan (“Had-a-REALLY-good-day")
Weine and Carolyn Biggs won chocolates.
Then...yum...lunch! This was enjoyed by many members and visitors. Dave Martin cooked the sausages
and lamb, which was accompanied by salads produced by Lorraine Carnemolla, Helen Prentice,
Carolyn Biggs, Robyn Seale and Sue Kallas. A popular feature of the day was Joan Weine's scones,
which, along with cakes and pavs, meant no one went home hungry.
So, once again this day, rounded off with a rousing rendition of the National Anthem, was a great success,
which would have made its namesake, Harold (Keg) Kallas vey proud.
Upcoming Events
* The Opening Dinner will be held on Wednesday, 24 th February, with catering from our new
restaurant, "Hayworth”.
* Our Opening Days will be on Sunday 21st and Thursday 25 th February.
* Good luck to the Sunday Pennants Team, who will have their first match on 6th March at Avalon.

GOLF FACTS?
Mary Queen of Scots could be considered the ultimate golf widow. Soon after her husband, Lord
Darnley, died under suspicious circumstances, Mary outraged her subjects by showing up for a round at
the local links. When she was put on trail for treason, the round was cited as evidence of her callousness.
She was beheaded in 1587. It could be considered a one-stroke penalty!
Sexism has no place in golf, say those who believe all clubs should be open to men and women.
However, there is one place where sexism survives – the Ladies Golf Club of Toronto in Ontario, Canada.
The club has had an all-woman membership since 1924 and won’t change its custom based on public
pressure. Men may play as guests but it is strictly female membership at this one-of-its-kind course.
Scientists using a hi-tech submersible device in 2010 to search for the Loch Ness monster, found more
than 100,000 golf balls in the famous lake. Local officials say golf tourists use the 21-square-mile body of
water as a landmark driving range.
