M A Y LIKE PHOENIX FROM THE ASHES 2004 by Kenneth Schopen So there I was, fresh out of college with a good job and finally able to save a few dollars. My trusty old 1970 Cutlass Supreme, my first car, was succumbing to the effects of life on the Gulf Coast and having been severely abused by a high school hot-rod driver (who, me?), so I decided to look for another Cutlass to use as my daily driver. I saw an ad in the local paper for a 1971 Cutlass Supreme convertible. The asking price was $700, which was about how much money I had saved, so I decided to go take a look. The car was in a small salvage yard For Sale lot, but it really looked like it should be out in the main yard. It was all intact, but in terrible condition. The paint looked like Autumn Gold (the same color as my '70 Cutlass)), but it was heavily oxidized, and the lower sections of the fenders and doors were green from algae growth. The windshield was cracked and had two large arcs where the wipers had been run for an extended period of time with no rubber on the blades. They think I must be weird to enjoy myself so much in a car club. Obviously they have only been members of “other” clubs, and never a member of our club. We have such a great group of people and it keeps on growing. I had a great time on the overnight trip to Payson. No, I take that back it wasn’t great at all, it was FANTASTIC! I never would have imagined having so much fun in Payson Arizona. We had a good group of people go on the trip. I had an incredible time with my fellow members. A big thanks to Patty Sarraillon for putting this event together. We have more good times ahead of us. May 8 th we will get in our cars and drive them to the drive-in theatre. You are guaranteed to have a good time. All you need to do is let me know that you want to go. June 5th we will once again jump in our cars and caravan out to Canyon Lake to ride on an old fashioned steamboat. While on board we will feast on steak & grilled chicken. The food is cooked right on board. The lake is beautiful, and on the 2nd half of the ride the moon will be shining down on us. I hope you are able to join in the fun. Oldsmobile Club of Arizona – May 2004 2 PAYSON PAYS DIVIDENDS! by Patty Sarraillon Well, another successful Oldsmobile Club of Arizona event and we owe a great deal of thanks to all that attended. Right from the beginning to the end, the fun and surprises never stopped. The Tonto Natural Bridge was even more awesome than expected and the hike was worth the visit. For those of you that didn't have the opportunity to go, please take the time to visit this beautiful natural wonder when you are driving through the area in the future. What a delight it was to see the beautiful classic from the club. Of the eleven cars six were Oldsmobile's. Sorry folks the 1950 is not road worthy yet, but it will be soon and we will be driving it. We had the most awesome hospitality "home" at Kohl's Ranch to socialize in Saturday night. The Horton house was a beautiful two bedroom, three fireplace home with all the amenities you can imagine, and we all had the opportunity to enjoy it. Fred Mandrick opened his unique building in Payson with all the antique signs, soda fountain, gas pumps and much more. Some of the locals brought their beauties out and parked them out front for us to see. Everywhere you looked there was something new to see. I'm sure the pictures of the cars that Scott Stockdill and others took will be something special to see: http://public.fotki.com/scotts/pavillions_2003-04/olds_club_trip_to_payson/ LIKE PHOENIX FROM THE ASHES by Kenneth Schopen CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 The seats were severely cracked and peeling, the carpet was filled with pollen pods from the abundant local Chinese Tallow trees, and the entire interior had a layer of mildew growing on it. The engine bay looked just as bad, with rust, grease, and general filth on everything. On the plus side, it had bucket seats and console, air conditioning, a 350 with a 4 barrel carburetor, dual exhaust, and SSII wheels (that didn't match or have center caps) - but it was otherwise complete, and it cranked up and ran (on at least six or seven cylinders). Several other people were there to look at the car, but some left after a quick walk-around, and the others left after they heard the engine fire up. I was undaunted, though, and the deal was made and I drove the car home. After a couple of washings, vacuumings, and some scrubbing - no, a lot of scrubbing - the car looked OK. From a distance, that is. My brother-in-law borrowed a heavy duty buffer from his friend's body shop, and after a day of slinging rubbing compound all over myself, the car took on a bit of a shine. Now that the car looked good (well, presentable anyway), it was time to get it running properly. A total engine rebuild accomplished this goal, with .030" over high compression 7cc dish pistons, a valve job with hardened exhaust seats and new springs, a new Crower cam with .461"/.484" lift and 274º/281º duration, an Edelbrock Performer 350 aluminum intake manifold (hey, I can lower this one onto the engine all by myself!), Heddman headers, and a carb kit for the good ol' QuadraJet. Oldsmobile Club of Arizona – May 2004 3 I was finally able to drive the car, and it fast became apparent that just about every rubber item on the car had deteriorated to the point of failure. The brakes didn't work too well, fuel leaked from above the gas tank, the front suspension made unfriendly noises, and the convertible top seals leaked like sieves when it rained (which was a daily occurrence on the Texas/Louisiana Gulf Coast). So, I installed a new brake booster and master cylinder, new front calipers, new rear wheel cylinders, new brake hoses, new fuel lines, and all new front suspension bushings. As long as I had it apart, I figured I'd replace the ball joints, tie rod ends, center link, and idler arm, too. Shortly after this, the transmission started making noises similar to a washing machine full of sand, so a new transmission and a 2400 RPM stall converter were installed. Whew, finally I could not only drive the car, but stop it, too! I began driving it on weekends the 185 miles from where I worked in Lake Jackson, TX to Lake Charles, LA, where Chris was still attending college and both our families lived. One of the trips involved a night time rainstorm so heavy that I couldn't see to drive and had to pull off I-10 and wait it out, huddling on the console with Sandy the Aussie dog (my faithful road trip companion) as the wind whipped the rain past the window seals on both sides of the car, soaking us to the skin. It was now apparent that the top seals MUST be replaced, and of course one thing led to another. Shortly thereafter Chris and I learned first hand how to replace a convertible top, and the car was now weather tight (as much as a convertible can be, that is). Now came the hard part - body work. I started by totally gutting the interior of the car. The door panels took up residence in the spare bedroom, the dash pad found a new home behind the sofa in the living room, and the rear bench seat hung on the wall in the garage. I bought two NOS front fenders, then located a rust-free trunk lid at a Houston area salvage yard (I know what you're thinking - it was off a car with Nebraska plates). Next came the difficult task of smoothing out the hundreds of dings and dents on the sides of the car, filling in a few rust holes, and DA sanding through five previous paint jobs. That took about six years to accomplish. As I said, the body work was the hard part. During that time I recovered the bucket seats and the rear bench seat, got a new pre-molded carpet set, and repaired the door panels. The windshield channel, steering column, and metal dash were painted, and the various hard plastic interior parts were painted with SEM vinyl paint. About this time, a friend offered the use of his garage and paint spraying equipment. The only catch was that he was moving in a week and I had to be out by then. We finished up the body work and got the primer on, and I ended up sanding the entire car by hand six times in a 48 hour period. The color finally went on without runs or sags, and I started reassembling the car. I was on a bit of a deadline, too, as Chris and I were moving to Phoenix in a month or so, and I had to get the car put back together so that it could be transported as a complete vehicle instead of a bunch of parts in boxes. I located a glass shop that would come to the house to install the windshield, and as I was putting the interior back together the new windshield was being installed. Finally, the last pieces of chrome trim were installed, and the car was complete! Too bad we couldn't go cruising in it as the registration and insurance were long expired, and since we were moving to Arizona in a few weeks it didn't make sense to renew them. So, it sat in the driveway until the tow truck arrived to bring it to the enclosed car transport for its journey to our new home here in Phoenix, where we have more than made up for that lost cruising time. General Motors built cars like this to be driven and enjoyed, and I am definitely upholding that tradition. This old 1971 Cutlass Supreme convertible has replaced our newer cars as my choice for a daily driver - it's just a whole lot more fun to drive. Oldsmobile Club of Arizona – May 2004 4 STATED VALUE INSURANCE – A CLEARER UNDERSTANDING by Art Soucek Insurance for our prized collector cars has been a source of much conversation and in most cases great misunderstanding for as long I can remember. The following is a reprint of an article I wrote for JWO in 1994 as a response to someone who wrote about his unpleasant experience with getting his collector car repaired after it sustained damage. At the time I was an Insurance agent with 13 years experience, now retired after 20 years in that field. Everything in the article still applies today and will continue that way far into the future. Almost all Stated Value policies are based on an appraisal system. You submit an appraisal from a 'qualified' appraiser and the insurance company issues a policy with the Stated Value amount on the policy declaration page. The key word here is 'qualified' appraiser. Most insurance companies have a list of people they feel are qualified to do appraisals. You definitely want to use one they recommend to help avoid a problem down the road. If the company does their own appraisals, and some do, by all means let them do it. It will be pretty tough for them to go back on it at a later date. You must make sure the stated amount is on the declaration page oif the policy or you are headed for a problem right from the start. Some companies use an appraisal merely to determine if the vehicle is eligible for physical damage coverage. This misleads you into thinking you have a Stated Value policy. Again, if you don't see the Stated Value amount on the policy declaration page, you DON'T have it. This system is based on the appraisal at the time it is done. If 2 or 3 years down the road the vehicle hade seteriorated, and the insurance company can prove it, that Stated Value amount will certainly be in question. There is another type of policy available. It is called an 'Exceptional Condition Vehicle' policy. This is a policy that allows older vehicles to have physical damage coverage that otherwise would not qualify, since most insurance companies will not offer that coverage on vehicles over 10 years old. There is no mention of a value amount on these policies and the value of the vehicle is left to the adjuster to determine at the time of the loss. This might be OK for a nice driver, but not for that original or fully restored collector vehicle. You must also be aware of the true condition of your vehicle. A #4 condition vehicle, or daily driver, is not eligible for a Stated Value policy with most companies. These policies usually have some type of usage restrictions on them such as low annual mileage and no work or business use. It should also be understood appraisals can be 'bought'. There are unqualified appraisers that will give you an appraisal for what ever amount you may want for a price. You are only hurting yourself by doing that. You need to understand the true and realistic value of your car from the start. Body shops are NOT a good source for appraisals. In the unfortunate event of a damage claim it is MOST important to find a reputable body shop that knows how to and is willing to work with the insurance company to get those NOS or acceptable reproduction or used parts a collector car shouls have to properly repair the damage. Don't just take the guy's word for his expertise. Ask for names of past customers and check with them. Go out and look at some of his work before trusting him with your pride and joy. Your agent can also be a big help here. That's why it is a good idea to have an agent who understands these cars. If you can find an agent who is involved in the hobby himself, he can work with the adjuster and body shop to help them understand what these cars mean and how they should be repaired. It is not unheard of to have to kick in money out of your your pocket to get the proper repair. It shouldn't have to be that way, but reality is not always pleasant. The bottom line is there are no guarantees on these policies. There are too many variables that could be used against you. Deterioration since the appraisal is the single biggest factor that can hurt you. You have to investigate the policy and company. Listen to the agent. Make a decision based on what you believe to be true and honest. Document your car's condition and value. Finally continue to enjoy it. I hope this has been some help in understanding 'Stated Value' insurance. In conjunction with our meeting, there is a car show at the Rock 'n' Roll McDonald's. We have a row reserved in the McDonald's parking lot exclusively for our club members. This is great time to have a meal and talk with Olds friends. Come out and join the fun! All of our board members are volunteers and have jobs, families, etc. One small thing you could do to help them out is to take your newsletter by email if you are able to. AMERICAN GRAFFITI NIGHT AT THE DRIVE-IN – MAY 8 th Did watching the movie American Graffiti bring back memories, or make you wish you were a kid back in the '50s? Did you enjoy the TV show Happy Days? Would you like to relieve some of those moments? If so, join us at the Scottsdale Six Drive-In Theatre on Saturday, May 8th. We strongly encourage you to bring your old car out and let's relive some of that old fashioned fun! The club will be providing dinner & drinks, AND will pay your admission fee! The movie we will be seeing is yet to be determined. Make sure you bring your folding chairs if you plan on sitting outside your car, and a FM radio to receive the theatre sound broadcast. PACIFIC SOUTHWEST ZONE SHOW - MAY 14th & 15th The Pacific Southwest Zone Show is taking place on May 14th & 15th at the Cliff's Resort in Pismo Beach, California. There will be a welcome party Friday evening with the car show taking place on Saturday. This will be a national points style car show. If you've never been to a national meet this show will be a great starting point for you. There are typically over 200 cars in attendance. There is an awards banquet on Saturday evening. NATIONAL HURST/OLDS DAY SLATED FOR MAY 22nd For National Hurst/Olds Day, all Hurst/Olds and classic Oldsmobiles are invited to join the Hurst/Olds Club of America on a beautiful cruise to Cave Creek on Saturday, May 22nd at 11:30am. They will be meeting in the Home Depot parking lot near Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd & 101 (on Northsight). After some fantastic photo opportunities in Cave Creek, the cruise will end at the Rock N' Roll McDonalds in the Scottsdale Pavilions to join us for Oldsmobile night. TWILIGHT DINNER CRUISE - MARK TWAIN STYLE – JUNE 5 th Lets head out to Canyon Lake for a little desert yachting. We have reserved a place on The Dolly Steamboat for a "Twilight Dinner Cruise" on one of the most picturesque lakes in Arizona. The drive out is marvelous, passing by dramatic views of the pristine Sonoran Desert and the Superstition Mountains. Bring your camera and binoculars for the drive and cruise. As we approach the lake we will take a moment to pull over at the Canyon Lake Vista Lookout for a spectacular 180 degree view. Constructed at the lake to mimic a Mark Twain era steamboat, the Dolly is a double Oldsmobile Club of Arizona – May 2004 6 decked sternwheeler that carries up to 130 passengers and departs daily, offering close views of the multihued canyon walls and lakefront wild life. You're sure to see ducks and shore birds and if you're lucky, Bighorn sheep that reside in the back canyons. The Dolly winds its way through a series of connected canyons revealing extraordinary scenery. As the boat slices through the smooth water the Captain plays relaxing music and points out items of interest. Dinner will be a satisfying buffet style serving of rib-eye steaks & chicken breasts with all the trimmings. By the time you've had dessert the sun will be setting, and the boat has turned around and heads back for the starlight/moonlight cruise home. The event takes place on Saturday, June 5th. The 2-1/2 hour cruise and dinner will cost each member $45.00 (the club is picking up the tab for the tax & tip). Due to the popularity of this cruise and the need for the caterers to buy & prepare the food, members will need to pay in advance. Reserve June 5th on your calendars now. ANNUAL CLASSICS CAR SHOW AT PRESCOTT VALLEY On Saturday, June 19th, the Yavapai Classic Cruisers of Arizona present The Annual Classics At Prescott Valley Car Show And Swap Meet. The car show hours are from 10-3. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. There will be trophies, 50/50 drawing, and raffle prizes. DINNER AND A SHOW AT THE CASINO On Saturday, July 10th we will meet at Casino Arizona at the Eagle's Nest restaurant at 7:00 p.m. The casino is located at 101 & McKellips in Scottsdale. They have a very extensive buffet which includes salads, main courses, desserts, and drinks. After dinner we will be attending Showstoppers Live which is also in the casino. The show starts at 9:00 p.m. It is a musical tribute to some of America's greatest super stars. Cost per person is a mere $10. Please see the flyer for more information. NATIONAL MEET IN AUGUST The Oldsmobile Nationals are taking place in Minneapolis, Minnesota on August 25-28, 2004. It sounds like this will be a great event in a great location. If we get a group of people from our club going we will organize a caravan to drive up together. For more information look in your Journey With Olds or online at http://www.mnoldsclub.org/2004Nationals 2007 NATIONALS WILL NOT BE IN ARIZONA The hotel that we had made arrangements with to host the 2007 Nationals is closing. It took quite a bit of time and leg work to find a suitable hotel that could accommodate our needs. With this in mind we will not be placing a bid this summer at the OCA Board Meeting that is scheduled to take place at the 2004 Nationals. We will however consider bidding for the 2008 Nationals if we can find another suitable location. Present were: Gloria Varley, Patty Sarraillon, Karl Sup, Charli Terry, appointed Secretary Pro Tem, Stuart Schindler, Joe Varley joined the meeting at 3:55 pm. The March 27, 2004 Board Meeting Minutes were approved as read. Gloria presented the Feb., 2004 car show income/expenses showing a net profit of $1297.00. Gloria reported that the spring picnic expenses totaled $228.04. Club expenses for the April 17 cruise to the Tonto National Bridge and Kohl’s Ranch in Payson totaled $218.68. Scott will be contacted to verify he is sending out applications to new OCA members listed in JWO each month. Karl showed a draft of the new web page. He and Mark are working to get it running. Samples of business cards designed by Carynn Alberts were reviewed. Stu will email Gloria other club designs for further consideration. The visors with the Club design were received and several have already been sold for $10.00 each. Plans for the May 8 drive-in event are finalizing. Varley’s will bring subs/chips & pretzels, cracker jacks, milk duds, and various other candy and snacks. The Sup’s will bring soft drinks & bottled water. Group will meet at 6:15 pm and go into theater together at 6:30 pm. The June 19 Prescott show starting at 10:00 am was discussed. It was decided to meet at 7:30 am at I-17/Bell to caravan to Prescott. The Casino Arizona Club event on July 10 was discussed. Each member will be charged $15.00 inclusive of dinner/tax (if any)/tip. The Club’s September 25 meeting will be held at Julio G’s Restaurant presenting Rockets on the Green. Julio’s will be presenting trophies for specific classes. Each member is on their own for food/drink. Gloria will be checking out the rumor that the Radisson is closing. If this is true we need to reconsider bidding for the 2007 Nationals. They donated at total of $3,000 to the Ronald McDonald House Patty gave a report about the Cruise on Central event. The overnight trip to Payson was super. Patty did a great job planning this event. The tech session was held today. Several members were in attendance. Sat., May 1st is the Beeline Cruise-in in Payson on Main Street. It is too late to pre-register, but if you want to attend you can register the day of the show for $20. May 8th is the Drive-in night. Club is paying admission and for all the food & drinks. You will need an FM radio to hear the audio. RSVP is mandatory. Pacific SW Zone Show is May 14th & 15th. Please attend if you are able. This will be a great show. It is held at a beautiful location. See the flyer in the newsletter for more information. June 5th is the Riverboat dinner cruise on Canyon Lake. $45 per person. RSVP to Patty. June 19th is the Prescott Valley car show. We had 3 cars to use as learning tools: Stu Schindler’s ‘70 442 Convert, Jim Albert’s ’56 Olds 88 4dr and Roy Lack’s ’70 Cutlass Supreme. I basically went through procedures of a tune-up and what parts needed to be checked for function. In checking out items we discovered we had a plague of non-functioning distributor vacuum advances. Initially I checked out Jim Albert’s ’56 at last month’s meeting at Pavilions. His was not working and you can’t really tune up a ’56 without the vacuum advance working. He installed a new one so we just checked timing and reset the carb mixture and it ran like a top. Stu’s 442’s wasn’t working as well as Roy’s ’70 and for good measure we checked Joe’s ’67 Cutlass convertible, and we were 3 for 3. We checked the local parts houses. No one stocked this part so we will have fine tune after new ones are installed. Distributor vacuum advances are the most overlooked item on tune-ups but are critical to a properly running engine, especially the ‘50’s Rockets. They advance the engine timing under variable power loads with the increasing and decreasing engine vacuum. With one ruptured on ’64-69 330ci, 350ci, 425ci & 455’s the vacuum leak created can cause a lean condition on #7 cylinder resulting in a burned exhaust valve. For those of you not familiar with a vacuum advance, it’s that silver round thingy on the side of your distributor. The way you check it for function is either with a hand vacuum pump or with a piece of vacuum hose and your mouth try to pull a vacuum on the advance and you should see the breaker plate move in the bottom of the distributor where your points are screwed to. If you can’t pull a vacuum or even if you can, and the breaker plate doesn’t move, it’s bad. With gas prices the way they are I would check this part out as if it’s not working it’s costing you money at the pump. We had refreshments and looked at Joe and Gloria’s cars including the ’72 Toronado ‘shelf’. As we all went to leave, I went to start my ’63 Super 88 Wagon and the starter solenoid stuck. So Scott Stockdill and I had our own starter tech session after the meeting back at Joe’s lift. A good Oldsmobile knows where to break down… 30 feet from Joe’s lift. We got the new solenoid installed and went over to Pavilions in time for the show. Oldsmobile Club of Arizona – May 2004 14 PAYSON PERSPECTIVE by John and Pam Eilers One could not ask for a more beautiful weekend than the one we experienced on our overnight trip to Tonto Natural Bridge State Park and Kohl’s Ranch in Payson. Twelve couples met at Target in Fountain Hills Saturday morning where we received information packets (along with some great treats!) and then proceeded on with our scenic drive to Payson. Once we arrived at our destination, we stopped at KFC to purchase lunch and then drove to Tonto Natural Bridge State Park to enjoy our meal. Eating our picnic lunch with high winds was quite the challenge! After lunch majority of the group hiked to see the Tonto Natural Bridge. Some of us had a hard time with the hike down the steep slopes (at least I did) so we opted to walk the easier path back. It is believed to be the largest travertine bridge in the world. The bridge is 183 ft. high over a 400 ft. long tunnel that measures 150 ft. at its widest point. It was quite a spectacular sight! If you have never had an opportunity to see it, we would highly recommend the attraction. We then arrived at Kohl’s Ranch later that afternoon, checked in, and relaxed before dinner. Patty and Bob’s “party room” was supposed to be a small cabin, but due to an error in reservations, they were upgraded to a beautiful 3bedroom lodge. We met for dinner at the Zane Grey Steakhouse and our meals were great. We all went back to the lodge and had a wonderful evening of socializing, cocktails, and a dice game of Scream and Holler. Sunday morning we had breakfast and cruised into Payson to see Fred Mandrick’s Soda Fountain where he has a wonderful collection of automobile memorabilia. Some had an opportunity to take pictures of their car in his garage. We would like to thank Patty and all others who have participated in putting this “cruise” together. It was a wonderful opportunity to be involved with AZ Olds Club. We enjoyed socializing with all the wonderful people we have met on this trip.
