Summer Newsletter 2011 (PDF 4.4mb)
Welcome Our Summer Interns
Through the generosity of the Lilly Endowment's
Community Foundation Intern Initiative, the Wabash
Valley Community Foundation has been fortunate
to be able to employ three
interns for the summer.
Mark Schmitz is our
administrative support intern,
assisting with day-to-day activities
of the Foundation. He is a
biochemistry major at DePauw
University and is a member of
DePauw’s Phi Delta Theta chapter.
Mark is a native of Terre Haute. He
is an avid soccer fan, having played
on Terre Haute South Vigo High
School’s varsity team and the Terre
Haute Flyers traveling team. He will
be returning to DePauw University in
the fall to begin his sophomore year.
Kayleigh Olah is our database development intern creating
a user-friendly scholarship database that students and parents
can use to find information about area scholarships. She is an
Informatics major at Indiana University.
Kayleigh also is a Terre Haute native. She is a member of the
Undergraduate Women in Computers Club at IU and works with
the club to create a sense of belonging for women majoring in
the field of computers. Kayleigh is
an avid photographer and edits her
own photos. She will be returning to
Indiana University in the fall to begin
her senior year.
James Ross is our marketing and
social media intern, assisting with
our 20th Anniversary Celebration
materials and other marketing
materials. He is a marketing major
at the Kelley School of Business at
Indiana University.
James is a native of Terre Haute and
has been involved in community
endeavors. He is a member of the
Rotaract Club of Indiana University
and has worked with the Bloomington
chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters through his membership in
the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. He will be returning to
Indiana University in the fall to begin his senior year.
Thanks to Our Spring Interns - We Wish You Well!
The Wabash Valley Community Foundation had the
privilege of working with three interns during the
spring semester who were with us through the
generous support of the Lilly Endowment Community
Foundation Intern Initiative. We thank them for their
hard work and wish them all the best.
Carolyne Holcomb was our special events intern. She helped
plan our 2011 Designated and Agency Grant Awards and our
Community Expo. Carolyne finished her internship with the
Foundation just in time to compete in the Miss Indiana Pageant at
the end of June. Her career plans are contingent on the results of
the competition.
Holly Sears served as our public relations/journalism intern,
handling media relations for many of our events, developing the
material, putting together packets, and contacting the media about
upcoming events. Holly has now moved to San Francisco and
works for Edelman, an independent public relations firm.
Mark Ellis served since June 2010 as our audit and financial
forecasting intern. He helped compile and organize all the material
needed to have the Foundation meet recertification standards
on ethics. Mark also helped with finances and forecasting, giving
detailed presentations on financial forecasting to our Board of
Directors. Mark now works in Fishers, Indiana, as a systems
engineer for ORS, Inc., a medical software design company.
Interns can apply for 2011-2012
The Lilly Endowment Community Foundation Intern Initiative is a pilot program that makes it possible for Indiana
community foundations to engage paid interns from Indiana colleges and universities. Students interested in interning
with the Foundation during the 2011-2012 academic year should submit their application, cover letter and reference list.
They can find the application at www.wvcf.com.
A Vote of Confidence
The Wabash Valley Community Foundation voted
the 2011 Best Not for Profit Organization.
Every year, the Terre Haute Tribunes Star offers its readers
the chance to choose which businesses and organizations
they feel are the ”best of the best” in Terre Haute.
This year, the Community Foundation was
selected as the Best Not for Profit
Organization. Thank you, Tribune
Star readers for voting for us.
The Community Foundation’s
mission is to engage people,
build resources and
strengthen community.
If you would like to assist us in our mission, you should call
Beth Tevlin, Executive Director, at 812.232.2234. She will
be glad to assist you in finding ways to become involved.

"Better Together" Indeed
The Better Together initiative brings to life the
Foundation's mission to engage people, build
resources and strengthen community.
The Better Together Grant initiative
was announced in 2009 to encourage
collaboration between two or more
local nonprofits that focus on similar
community issues. The first two "Better
Together" grants of $25,000 each
were awarded in March to Partners
Advancing Literacy Skills (PALS) and
the Court Ordered Placement for
Education (C.O.P.E.)
The C.O.P.E. program is a court administered alternative to outof-school suspension. It was developed through a partnership
between the Clay Community Schools, the Clay County Circuit
Court, the Clay County Prosecutor, the Clay County Community
Corrections and the Clay County Sheriff’s
Department. The program is comprised of
supervised educational activities, behavior
modification/skill building activities and
community service work crew projects.
The goal is to ensure that children in Clay
County attend school, remain safe and
receive a good education.
The Wabash Valley Community Foundation
was delighted to support these two
partnerships focused on improving
education.

in students. The PALS program currently targets Vigo County fifth
“The Foundation is pleased to provide funding
grade students and has effectively helped improve their Language
to continue the work of these partnerships.”

Mark your Calendar, Cast Your
Vote and Help Give Away $20,000
The Wabash Valley Community Foundation
has granted more than $15 million to
worthy nonprofit organizations serving
the residents of Clay, Sullivan and Vigo
counties since 1991.
To celebrate its 20th anniversary and to focus
the spotlight on several nonprofit agencies, the
Foundation has planned a Community Expo for
Thursday, September 15, 2011 from 5 to 7:30
p.m. at Hulman Center.
The Expo will highlight the philanthropic efforts of 63 nonprofit
agencies that serve Clay, Sullivan or Vigo counties and have
agency endowment funds in the Community Foundation. In
addition to their displays, these agencies can vie for a portion
of $20,000 as selected by a vote of the attendees that evening.
Tickets will be available at the Community Foundation office
or online for $15.00 each. Call now to reserve your ticket!
